Herd Health: Herd health is excellent. All cattle have been vacci-

nated and boosted with modified live IBR, BVD-PI3, BRSV and 7-way. Heifers have also been vaccinated for Lepto 5 and Vibrio. They have also been treated with dewormer. All cattle have tested negative for BVD-PI. All bulls have passed a BSE and semen evaluation. Trucking: Bring your trailer to the sale and receive a $100 rebate per bull. Any bull(s) destined for a state that requires a Trich test to enter will be tested, at our expense, on March 21st, but will not be able to leave sale day. You may bring your trailer back within 7 days of the test results to receive your haul rebate. Please see Trich explanation on page 5 for full details. There is no trucking rebate on the heifers. Delivery: We offer free delivery on bull purchases for the first 700 miles and free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S. FOR TOTAL BULL PURCHASES OVER $30,000. Delivery for purchases under $30,000 but over 700 miles will be at cost for only those miles over 700, prorated among bulls still on the load. Please provide a facility where we may unload, sort, and reload. If unable to, please make an arrangement with a neighbor, sale barn, etc. We make every effort to get your bulls as close as possible, usually right to your place. However, because some deliveries are made with a 53’ ground load or pot belly trailer, we may consolidate deliveries to one location in the general area. On some long distance deliveries, we may ask you to meet our truck to lessen the time animals are in transit. Please have other cattle near unloading area so bulls are not alone. All deliveries and injuries are at buyer’s risk unless the optional Bull Warranty (see page 6) has been purchased. Heifers are FOB Strong City, KS, but we can help arrange delivery at a reasonable cost. Free care: In lieu of free trucking, buyers may leave bulls in our care, at buyer’s risk, until May 1, 2022 at no charge. Selection Guide - Pasture Proven, Profit Driven Genetics Frame Score: We no longer assign a numerical number to frame score. Frame score is the least consistent of any objectively measured trait. It is highly variable due to facilities, equipment used, and the way the animal is standing at the time. We have circled animals around to be re-measured and can seldom duplicate a measurement. In addition, measurements can vary widely due to environmental differences. Our fall bulls have posted an adjusted yearling frame score average almost a whole frame score lower some years, than our Spring bulls, and yet mature to the same size. This is due to the slower rate of growth of the fall bulls while on the cow. We now report frame score as Moderate (Mod.), Moderate minus (Mod.-), or Moderate plus (Mod. +). Moderate is our most frequent observation and will correspond to around a frame score 5 mature size. Bull Development: Our bulls are developed in a rock quarry - far from a traditional feedlot setting. Bulls are in much larger area and are required to travel up and down the rocky hills of the quarry. This is how we supply fit, athletic individuals capable of covering miles of rough country while servicing your cows. Scan the QR code at right to learn more about our bull development. Dam information: The bottom line of each catalog lot lists information about the bull’s dam. It includes the

age of the dam, as well as her mature weight and body condition score at weaning. We also provide that dam’s MPPA (most Probable Producing Ability) which compares the repeatability of that cow’s production as measured by her calves’ relative weaning weight in our program. New for 2022, we are introducing Calving Interval Value ($CIV), which identifies difference in value contributed by dams based on the repeatability of their calving intervals and when in the calving season they give birth relative to their contemporaries. Ranchers have long understood that calves born earlier in the calving season have greater earning potential because of the added pay weight that comes with additional days of age. Similarly, we’ve understood the added feed costs associated with cows whose calving intervals annually creep longer and longer; not to mention the increased probability of these cows departing the herd prematurely. This value uses the annual calving interval each cow maintains throughout her productive life and evaluates her performance among cows of the same group birth year to arrive at economic index relative to the annual herd performance. Contemporary group structures are maintained so cattle whose calving interval is impacted by management (such as a donor dam) are not included in the dataset. Finally, the value of calves that are born earlier in the season and the feed expense that is either saved or spent based on the cow’s calving interval is monetized to rank cows based on their contribution to cow herd profitability due to the repeatability of their reproductive outcomes. Former reproductive measures such as Stayability miss cows that calve later and later each year - only finding them when they leave the herd. Nor does it reward the cow who breeds first service A.I. on a repeated basis. In general, the higher the CIV number the better, but anything that approaches 50 or higher has a dam that calves on a regular annual calving interval and generally in the first half of the calving season.

Percentile Rank: Use the line right under the EPD listing to see

where a specific bull’s EPDs ranks vs bulls of his age, in the Red Angus breed. For example, if a bull has 10% under his CED EPD - that means he ranks in the best 10% of the breed for Calving Ease Direct when compared to similar aged animals. This can be an excellent tool when you are unfamiliar with Red Angus EPDs.

Parental Validation: Unless otherwise indicated, all bulls in this sale are DNA verified to both sire and dam to the greatest extent possible.

Trichomoniasis Testing: The chance that you will infect your cow herd with Trich by purchasing a bull from any reputable seedstock provider is almost nonexistent. However, to combat this costly disease many states are ramping up testing requirements for animals entering from other states. If you live in a state that requires a Trich test, we will test the bull(s) you purchased after the sale at our expense, but please understand these bulls won’t be able to leave on sale day. If you are unsure as to what your state requirements are, please call us and we can help determine whether or not your bull(s) will require a Trich Test. Sortable Spreadsheet: Refer to the sortable catalog data on our website www.MushrushRanches.com and this catalog for the most accurate and up to date information on our sale cattle. Supplement Sheets: The Spring bulls were scanned for carcass merit on February 21, 2022 - which was too late for the information to go

into the EPD calculations for this catalog. A bull supplement sheet with updated carcass EPDs will be available online and at the registration table sale day. This sheet will also include any OUT cattle since the printing of the catalog. A heifer supplement sheet will also be available with lot information and calving expectancy after the heifers are preg checked. Please check our website frequently for the most current and up-todate copy of each of these supplement sheets. 5

Selection Tools - Using EPDs After making a visual appraisal we highly recommend you use EPDs to determine which bulls best fit your production goals. It must be remembered that actual weights and measurements cannot be used to compare individuals across contemporary groups, let alone across herds. A contemporary group is simply a group of calves of same sex, similar age and identical management, e.g., calves that have had equal opportunity to perform. All actual weights, including birth weight, can be affected by environment, feed, age of dam, and even at what point they are taken. For that reason do not compare adjusted or actual weights between our Spring and Fall born bulls or cows.

Consider the following:

If we scanned our bulls at 18 months and published actual REA of impressive size. • Does this make these bulls genetically superior for Rib Eye Area? No! It is scientifically proven that cold weather prior to calving will increase birth weight. • Are these cattle genetically predisposed to higher birth weight? No! In the Flint Hills of Kansas, fall calves winter extremely hard. The grass is at its lowest protein (4%) and the weather can be very harsh. On the other hand, spring born calves hit their stride about the time green grass starts growing. They traditionally will have higher weaning weights when compared to the fall born calves using identical genetics. Consequently it is common for our Spring born calves to wean heavier than our fall born calves due to environment. • Does this mean our spring born bulls will sire calves with higher weaning weights than our Fall born bulls? No! For the reasons stated above, it would be misleading for us (or any seedstock provider) to promote individual animals using actual data. Comparisons made across contemporary groups using actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors.

To accurately compare across contemporary groups and across herds, EPDs are your best tools!!!!

A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which is ‘best’. EPDs are merely an estimate of each animal’s genetic merit for the traits represented. It is up to producers to determine which is the best fit for their operation. The EPD profile that works best for my herd and management situation may not necessarily be the best fit for your environment, herd composition, management style or marketing strategy.

By correctly using EPDs we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. The key to using EPDs is knowing what you have, what you need, and making selections accordingly.

Also remember that EPDs predict relative performance not actual performance.

On average, calves from a high accuracy +90 YW EPD bull are expected to weigh 20 pounds more than calves from a high accuracy +70 pound YW EPD bull at one year of age. Whether they express this added weight depends on if the environment or management, including feed availability, allows them to.

We would like to emphasize that this is not insurance (like that purchased through a broker), rather an additional service offered to our customers. • Coverage is good for a period of 5 months following purchase. • Cost is 5% of the purchase price paid at settlement. • Details and limitations available at checkout. • In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards the purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage. Example: You purchase a bull for $4000 at the March 18, 2022 sale and buy the warranty for $200. He gets injured on May 31st. You sell him and get a credit for $4000 minus what he brought when you sold him. If he died it would have been $4000 credit towards your replacement bull purchase. 6

Docility Scoring While we are constantly evaluating and culling our herd for disposition, we evaluate every bull in our sale for Docility and assign each a numerical score. While several breeds currently calculate a docility EPD, there is no standardized method for data collection. We use the following technique: Each bull was removed from his contemporaries, put into a 12’ wide sorting alley and made to stand by himself between two people that were approximately 20-25’ from one another. Because this is a subjective measure, it was important that the same person scored every bull (similar to other subjective measures like udder scores or Body Condition Scores). The bulls were evaluated and scored 1-5 depending on their level of comfort with human interaction under mild pressure and in a somewhat confined space.

Explanation of Docility Scores

1. Very Comfortable (stands quietly, chews cud) 2. Comfortable (Walks around) 3. Uncomfortable (Walks faster, respiration may be elevated, not happy but accepting of mild pressure) 4. Nervous (Bull wants to return to herd-mates, may attempt to run past with little to no pressure) 5. Very Nervous and/or Aggressive (puts people on the fence). NOTE: Animals that score “5” are culled and not offered for sale.

Age-Advantage Red Angus Bulls Lots 1 - 2 18-month-old Fall Bulls

Weaning is a full year away from sale day, so we grow these fall-born bulls a little slower. They spent the summer grazing Flint hills grass and the fall on Growsafe bunks collecting feed efficiency data. Winter was spent in our rough, rocky bull development trap maturing them into hard-muscled fit bulls who know how to handle tough terrain. The scrotal circumference (SC) printed in the catalog is the actual measurement taken February 7 & 8, 2022. There is one SimAngus Fall bull in the sale offering. He is lot 16 and his lot template is in red rather than black to distinguish him in the sale order.

We lead off our 2022 sale with an Icon son that is as sound footed and correct as we can make them. With a long, level hip and a really attractive front end yet still plenty of shape and natural thickness, H546 is what we wish all calving ease bulls would look like. His dam is proof that it doesn’t take a big cow to raise a front-end herd bull.

Here’s an especially deep-ribbed calving ease R017 grandson that checks all the boxes. His best 7% calving ease spreads to triple-digit growth thanks in large part to his strong performance ratios, which includes a 105 ADG ratio. At Mushrush Ranches, we’ve utilized E.T. (Embryo Transfer) to multiply the posi-

tive influence of females who have proven to be especially functional and productive, and that excel in the traits that are important to our customers sustained profitability.

You’ll notice some differences in the data for ET calves and their dams.

First, instead of seeing an ET bull’s actual birth weight, or weaning and yearling ratios, that data is replaced with “ET”. This indicates that bull is an embryo transfer calf and was raised by a recipient cow, rather than his actual genetic dam. Because the recipient cow introduces a maternal environment that has no genetic relationship to the ET calf, we do not include the BW, WW or YW in the contemporary group. They do not receive ratios, and that data is not included in the EPD calculation for those traits. This follows BIF (Beef Improvement Federation) guidelines for the handling of ET data. Similarly, instead of a cow weight, BCS or CVI value, you’ll just see the word, “DONOR”. This is because the donor dam has been pulled away from the cow herd, and managed separately, often going into embryo production for a year rather than carrying and raising her natural calf. Thus, her weight and Body Condition are altered by our management as is her calving interval, which impacts her CVI.

All the Growth & Carcass you will ever need

It seems that everywhere you look cattle are being promoted for growth and marbling. Growth and carcass, Growth and carcass, more……more….more….. to what end? To start, your environment is very likely unable to support extra growth. Your weaning weights will change very little but your mature cow weights will increase as you select for more weaning and yearling weight. The Result: Bigger, harder doing cows that require more feed and are harder to breed back. More open cows = More expense and less income. At Mushrush Ranches our focus is on moderate sized, efficient, fertile genetics carefully picked to do more with less. Our average cow weight at weaning in both Fall and Spring herds for 2021 was 1210 pounds with a Body Condition Score of 5. (First calf heifers were excluded as they are still maturing.)

These closeouts show that we’ve got all the growth we need. In fact, if they were much heavier, we’d start getting discounted for heavy carcass weights (over 1050 lbs). Sure, we’ll keep progeny testing to improve feed efficiency, performance testing to improve gain, and collecting carcass and ultrasound data to capture even more carcass premiums. But these traits are “fine-tuning” the profitability of a cow/calf operation. The heavy lifting for cow herd profitability remains in the reproductive efficiency of the cow herd, the herd’s fit to it’s production environment and having cows sized to optimize stocking rate and feed utilization.

Spring Yearling Red Angus Bulls Spring Bulls - Feeding Spring Born bulls offered as yearlings is a delicate balance. We have to feed them hard enough

to manifest differences in growth and carcass traits but not so much as to make bulls fat and unfit. As with the Fall born bulls, these Spring yearlings are allowed to roam in large traps, getting plenty of exercise to get into condition to handle large groups of females without falling apart. Scrotal measurements on the spring bulls were taken 2/14/2022 and the data in the catalog reflects their actual scrotal circumference. (Note, these bulls adjusted yearling sc will be larger than the actual as scrotal circumference increases about .25 cm per week or 1 cm per month for yearling Red Angus bulls.) Another change you’ll notice for 2022 is that we are running our SimAngus bulls throughout the sale order - right alongside their Red Angus herdmates. The lot templates for the Sim Angus bulls are in Red and under the birthdate it says SimAngus along with the percent of AR and SM in their pedigree. The SimAngus lots are: 114, 115, 127,128, 142, 143, and 144. Spring Bull Ultrasound - The spring bulls were not ultrasounded in time to get that data into the sale catalog. Thus, the EPDs in the catalog do not reflect phenotypic variation for Ribeye Area (REA) or percent intramuscular fat (IMF). We will have updated EPDs as well as ultrasound ratios on our website as soon as they are available, as well as on the sale day supplement sheet.
