Information on BH14 haplotype.

BH14 is an abbreviation for Braunvieh haplotype 14. In the homozygous state, it leads to an early embryonic miscarriage. Carrier status for BH14 was released by Brown Swiss Association Switzerland to animal owners in August 2022. Here in the US, USDA AGIL is doing further testing to confirm the findings in Switzerland.

The reported haplotype BH14 has been detected from Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) genotypes as having > 10 homozygous haplotypes expected but none observed. Those haplotype frequencies are above 2% in USA and above 3% in Switzerland. While the frequency for the BH14 haplotype is very low, every attempt is being made to confirm the reported findings. Further testing will lead to a more complete list with better end results. The US Brown Swiss Association is working in cooperation with CDCB and AGIL to find answers for these issues. There is work being done to develop standalone testing for the BH14 haplotype.

January 2009 Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th President.

2016 - Donald Trump is elected President of the U.S. 2018 - Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court. 2019 - U.S. President Trump is impeached. 2021 - U.S. evacuates Afghanistan. 2022 - U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade.

Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary EJ Paris, owned by Henry Farms and Wayne E. Sliker, Ohio. To date her record was 384,150 lbs. milk, 16,397 lbs. fat and 12,711 lbs. protein. Paris went on to win this award for 5 years in a row through 2016. She finished with 459,901 lbs. milk, 19,751 lbs. fat and 15,508 lbs. protein. These totals make Paris the All-Time leader for Lifetime Milk, Fat, and Protein, as reported in the June 2017 Bulletin.

The Bulletin also reported the following highlights. At the January 2016 Board meeting, they approved that a cow could receive a Final Score of 95 upon the evaluation of two classifiers. The first cow scored 95 was Eloc Wagor Kandid, “2E95/95MS”. She was owned

by Elite Dairy, Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, New York. The Board of Directors announce that effective May 14, 2018, Norman Magnussen, Lake Mills, Wisconsin, will become the new Brown Swiss Association Executive Secretary. Effective with the July 2018 issue, the Bulletin will be published by Dairy Agenda Today, Basehor, Kansas. Beginning with the September 2018 Bulletin issue, the Brown Swiss Historical Society begins publishing a “Visiting the Past” page in each issue of the Bulletin. The goal is to give a glimpse of the Brown Swiss history in the US since the original importations in 1869.

In 2018, the Bulletin started reporting on Cutting Edge T Delilah.

Delilah began making history by being named Grand Champion at the Eastern National Show (PA All-American) in 2018. She proceeded to be named Supreme Champion at that show over all breeds. She followed that by showing at World Dairy Expo (Central National), and again was named Brown Swiss Grand and again Supreme Champion. She is owned by Kyle Barton, Copake, New York. Kyle is Ken Main’s grandson. Delilah was also named Supreme Champion of the Junior show.

The Elite Dairy Dispersal was held on September 4, 2019, a month prior to World Dairy Expo. Cutting Edge T Delilah, 2018’s Supreme Champion at WDE sold for a breed record of $210,000.

The new owners are Dr. Kenny Joe Manion, Scottsville, Kentucky, and his new partner, Ken Main of Copake, New York. The second high seller and second all-time high-selling animal at $175,000 was Cutting Edge Thunder Faye, also purchased by Manion and Main.

A total of 155 head were sold, with the official average of $8,948 also breaking the previous herd sale average. One month later, at World Dairy Expo, Delilah again becomes the Grand Champion Brown Swiss cow. Later that week with Kyle Barton at the halter, Delilah again is named Supreme Champion of WDE, becoming only the second Brown Swiss to claim back-to-back WDE Supreme Championships.

2020 had a bright outlook for the Bulletin, then the COVID pandemic appeared. The May and June issues were combined, reducing the total issues to 10. The World Brown Swiss Conference scheduled to take place in the U.S. during the World Dairy Expo was postponed until 2021. World Dairy Expo was cancelled in 2020, for the first time in over 50 years. 2021 saw the Bulletin back to 11 issues, but the COVID pandemic was still lingering and the World Brown Swiss Conference was again postponed until 2022.

In 2022, the COVID pandemic had subsided and the Bulletin was focused on its own 100th Anniversary with a series of articles throughout the year highlighting the Bulletin’s journey to its 100th Anniversary. The September Bulletin included 30 ads and was distributed at the very successful World Brown Swiss Conference and World Dairy Expo. The November Bulletin presented extensive coverage of the 2022 World Brown Swiss Conference.

The December Brown Swiss Bulletin

This December Bulletin (2022) VTP page takes a look back 100 years to the first December Bulletin published in 1922. What was on the cover; was there a Christmas message; what was the main article; who were the Association officers; and who had the back cover? See all those answers below, plus comments made on the first few issues of the brand new magazine called “The Brown Swiss Bulletin”.

The December 1922 Bulletin Cover

The picture on the cover page of this issue gives breeders an opportunity of viewing the Grand Champion Brown Swiss cow of the Northwest. But it shows more than just the animal.

It contains an excellent likeness of the Champion Brown Swiss booster of the Northwest – yes, larger territory might be included – the most enthusiastic breeder in America.

W. O. Bohart of Bozeman, Montana, has probably done more for the “cow from the little European Republic” in western America than any other dozen men. He has talked, tested, and shown at fairs. He has encouraged club work, he has distributed breeding stock, he has organized local associations, and last but not least, he has contributed much of the force of his dynamic personality to the cause of “The Big Brown Cow”.

Lease animals are not eligible for this recognition. he cow must be newly classified 90 points or above in T the calendar year (scored Excellent for the first time, not just raised in score within the Excellent category).

A cow will only qualify once for this award.

Eligible cows will be looked at on a monthly basis. ertificates will be sent out electronically and youth will be C recognized on the Youth page of the Bulletin and on the National Youth Association social media outlets.

It’s never too early to start filling out the youth applications; they are due March 31st!

Youth Achievement

The Youth Achievement Award recognizes outstanding youth work in the Brown Swiss breed. An anonymous committee will choose four finalists to attend the National Convention for interviews. From the combined scores of the interview and application book, a National winner and runner-up will be chosen.

Junior Youth Achievement

The Junior Youth Achievement Award was added in 2015. This award recognizes outstanding youth ages 8-15 for their work in the Brown Swiss breed. An anonymous committee will choose the top 3 finalists. The Achen Family will be sponsoring cash prizes for the award winners.

National Ambassador

The National Ambassador is the spokesperson for the National Brown Swiss Association and represents the breed at local, state and national events including World Dairy Expo, national convention and other national shows. The ambassador shall have an expense

fund available of $2,000. The Alternate Ambassador shall have an expense fund available of $2,000.

Cheese Yield

The Cheese Yield Award is presented to the junior whose cow has the highest cheese yield for a 30-day period. The cheese yield formula for cheddar cheese is used to determine the winner.

District winners receive a plaque at the national convention awards presentation. The overall National winner receives $100 and a special plaque at the national convention awards presentation. At the Fun Auction, a representative block of cheddar cheese will be sold. These proceeds fund both the Youth Production and Cheese Yield monetary awards with the remaining proceeds donated to the Junior Activity Fund.

Youth Production

A youth production winner from each national director district is chosen based on deviation from herd average. The cow with the highest deviation overall is recognized as the National Youth Production Award winner. Records must meet breed association standards (DHI or DHIR) and be completed during the calendar year.

(305-day record completed between January 1 and December 31) A copy of the DHI testing sheet for the month of the 305-day record completion, and monthly herd average for that same month must accompany the entry. Records are standardized to a 305-day 2x Mature Equivalent (ME) basis. The ME record and herd average are adjusted to an Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) basis. District winners receive a plaque certificate and the national winner receives $100 and a plaque.

Youth Scholarship/Grant

The Brown Swiss Association awards a $1000 scholarship or grant, annually to youth pursuing a degree in agriculture or a dairyrelated field. If the winner is not attending college, the grant will apply toward the purchase of a registered Brown Swiss animal.

Applicants are encouraged to reapply each year. Additional Scholarships are sponsored by Progressive Brown Swiss Sires, Lyn & Peter Vail, Joseph Miller Memorial, and the Howard Voegeli Memorial. The recipient is announced at the National Convention Annual Meeting. A scholarship or grant may be awarded each year, there is no restriction. The award will be selected based on quality of application. A junior may receive a scholarship or grant from the Brown Swiss Association only one time.

~ OBITUARY ~ ( Robert E. “Bob” Kietzman

August 2, 1937 - November 20, 2022 Beloit, WI - Robert Edward Kietzman, age 85, died Sunday, November 20, 2022, in his home. He was born August 2, 1937, to Edward and Gertrude (Dahlke) Kietzman in Chicago, IL. Bob attended St. John’s Military Academy. He married Grace Marie Wolter on December 16, 1961. She preceded him in death on September 17, 2021. He was a member of Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church. Bob liked to socialize and was a member of the Brown Swiss Cattle Aswww. brownswissusa.com

sociation. He was also an active member of the American Daylily Society and Hibernizing and growing the Daylily’s.

He is survived by his two sons, David (Kim) Kietzman and Joel (Missy) Kietzman; his five grandchildren, Samantha, Garrett, Hannah, Rachel and Ava and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister Doris.
