Welcome to Roots 2.0,
Two years ago, Cedar Hill Farm, R.A. Brown Ranch and many of their cooperator team launched the maiden voyage of the “Roots of our Success” elite Red Angus female offering. That event featured superior Red Angus females at both R.A.Brown headquarters in Throckmorton, Texas and their long-time friends and cooperators, Cedar Hill Farm, Jane Lew, WV. For those unfamiliar, these cooperators follow prescribed genetic and management guidelines to produce bulls - the top half of which are delivered to R.A. Brown Ranch for Feed Efficiency testing, ultrasound carcass measurements and foot and docility scoring, prior to being sold in one of the biannual R.A. Brown Ranch bull sales. Now, in November of 2020, R.A.Brown Ranch cooperators are at it again, and will share the best of their respective herds. These females represent many of the dams, daughters and sisters of the high-selling bulls from the R.A. Brown Ranch sales from the most recent years. The sale was initially dubbed, “The Roots of our Success”, for two reasons. First, Red Angus has been the fastest growing beef breed of the last decade, and that’s largely due to the breed being rooted in reproductive efficiency and trouble-free characteristics of the Red Angus cow. Roots 2.0 will feature a hand-picked offering of superior genetic and phenotypic value to ensure the breeds continued growth over the next decade. Secondly, although R.A. Brown Ranch just celebrated its 125th anniversary of service to Texas’ expansive beef industry and leadership in the genetic improvement of the Red Angus breed - the families’ roots are back east. About 4 hours east of Jane Lew, West Virginia to be exact - on the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Culpeper County, Virginia. After the Civil War, the family moved to Texas - initially to Galveston and then to “Cow Town” (Fort Worth, TX) where they were involved in one of the early livestock commissions. Finally they settled at the current location in Throckmorton County. Cedar Hill Farm and JYJ Red Angus joined the R.A.Brown Ranch cooperator team in 2001 and 2006 respectively, and now combine for over 33 years of cumulative genetic contributions to the R.A Brown Ranch program. In April of 2019, our friend, bull partner, and fellow Red Angus cooperator, Ernest Christian of Willows Farm had reached the point in life where he needed to retire from the cattle business. Donnell & Kelli Brown realizing the genetic opportunity and wanting the WFCC females to continue producing bulls for the R.A. Brown Ranch program purchased Ernest’s entire herd. By June of 2019 they left the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and off-loaded in the mesquite and prickly pear of Throckmorton County Texas. In less than 60 days the entire deal was complete...with one big exception. Ernest retained 2 picks from the 2020 heifer calf crop. Those picks can be yours in Roots 2.0

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth. Research Confirmation Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.
Rancher Trusted While market research validates the price advantage of Red Angus heifers, ranchers have tested and trusted her worth on the range for years. Red Angus females are desirable as replacement heifers because they mature into productive mother cows that reward producers with extra dollars in their pockets on sale day.
The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.
Red Angus cows have gained ranchers’ trust as a complete package through fertility, eshing ability, good disposition, longevity and excellent overall production. They produce feeder calves that earn premiums in the yard and on the rail through docility, feed efciency, conversion and carcass merit.
They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.
Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring protability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. ■
