Welcome to Wedel Red Angus’ 19th Annual Bull & Replacement Female Sale Welcome to our 2019 Wedel Beef Genetics sale offering. Our customers’ sustained profitability drives our decision-making process, and we believe that is reflected in the 170 bulls that will sell on March 12th. They are, after all, the culmination of every genetic input selected and every female retention decision we have made. We understand that ultimately, the best service that we can provide our customers is to offer a better product - bulls that give them the best outcome for their bottom lines. That philosophy was our main reason to invest in a system to identify differences in individual animal dry matter intake as well as EPDs that predict differences in Feed Efficiency and Indices that account for Feed Efficiencies impact on producer profit in a meaningful way. These tools provide our industry with genetic tools to lower inputs costs, improve efficiency and become even more competitive versus other proteins. Of perhaps even greater importance is that research continually points to the positive relationship between improving feed efficiency of your steers on feed and their sisters that make a living in the cowherd. Speaking of $Profit, you’ll notice each bull sells with a $Profit/percentile rank as well as component indicies, $Ranch and $Feeder. $Ranch predicts differences in profitability for cow calf producers that retain their own replacements, but also sell their steers and cull heifers at weaning. $Feeder looks at those post weaning traits that impact the profitability for those feeders who purchase our customers’ calves. These Profit indices and feed efficiency EPDs represent another investment we’ve made at Wedel Beef Genetics to give our ranching customers important information so that they may make the best informed genetic selection decisions possible. Anderson Land & Cattle, Inc. Anderson Land and Cattle, Inc. is a family-owned and operated cow-calf and no-till farming operation located near Oberlin, KS. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer have been a large part of our breeding program. We believe in using the very best cows in our herd to produce a larger percentage of the calves born. A purebred Simmental herd was developed, beginning in 1978 with bulls and replacement heifers being sold through state association sales, bull test stations, and private treaty. Red Angus breeding was introduced in the mid-1990’s, adding hybrid vigor and improving carcass traits. Carcass data collection is a top priority for us and using those results over the years, we’ve been able to make breeding decisions that have allowed progressive improvements. Since 2010, our fat cattle have average 96% choice earning 13 GridMaster awards. We feel that feeding these cattle at home throughout the entire process has given us great insight into how our breeding can affect the end product value of our calves. All around herd performance is very important to us, from the maternal side to terminal feedlot steers. Through total herd analysis, we select bloodlines thoughtfully to move us forward towards these goals. We enjoy raising quality cattle and get excited every year when a new calf crop hits the ground. We look forward to the future, as we continue to take advantage of the technology that allows us to keep improving and building our herd. At Wedel Beef Genetics, Rancher Profitability is Job #1. In the fall of 2015 we introduced our goals of improving beef industry profitability through improved feed efficiency. Now, four years later, we’re making our feed intake and conversion data even more meaningful. By leveraging the complete contemporary group data we collect on all of our bulls against hundreds of thousands of animals that have been similarly evaluated by the $Profit team, we bring the power of pedigree relationships to the prediction of feed efficiency and in this year’s catalog will present this information in a true multi-breed Feed Efficiency EPD: F:G. In addition, the relevance of Feed Efficiency data and the resultant EPD are enhanced through it’s inclusion in a multi-breed economic selection index; $Profit
How $Profit Works:
$Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will sire 100 progeny over his lifetime, that 30% of the replacements will be retained and that the rest of the heifers and all of the steers will be finished and sold on a value-based grid. Even though many ranchers sell their calves at weaning - and don’t own them all the way to harvest, we have seen feedlots’ willingness to to pay for calves from genetics recognized for superior post-weaning value. Example:
• Bull A has a $Profit of $8,000 • Bull B has a $Profit of $4,000 • We would expect Bull A to produce $4,000 ($40/head x 100 calves) than Bull B.
$Profit = One number that predicts your bottom-line! How F:G (Feed/Gain) Works:
Predicts differences in the amount of feed a bull’s progeny will consume to produce one pound of gain. Example: Progeny from a bull with a -0.50 F:G EPD would be expected to consume 1/2 pound less feed per pound of gain than progeny from a bull with a 0.00 F:G EPD.
What traits are included in $Profit? Nearly every trait that impacts profitability. The relationship between most traits and profit is usually straight forward. Here is the list relevant traits and their impact on $Profit: Revenue Traits: • Calving Ease = More Calves • Weaning & Yearling EPD = More payweight • Fertility (Days to Conception) = more pounds and more calves • Carcass Weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. • Marbling = valued based on grid premiums • Ribeye area = value as impacts Yield Grade • % Retail Product = more yield is more meat Cost Traits: • Cow Mature Size = in general, bigger eats more • Cow intake = increased feed intake means increased costs • Feed Efficiency = cost of Gain • Carcass Weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs. • Marbling = valued based on grid premiums Some traits are less easily characterized. Milk for example, is a good thing until you get too much. When milk EPD moves over +25 it begins to have more of a negative effect on fertility than the positive effect it has on weaning weight.

Pawnee Canyon continues to play an important role in our program despite very limited semen. In our 2017 sale, a pair of Pawnee Canyon sons lead off the sale going to GridMaster Award winners Don & Cindy Sitz from Drewsey, OR. 8226 is out of a daughter of Merlin T179, whose daughters are appreciated for excellent foot structure. The oldest Merlin T179 daughters are now 10 – but we’ve never culled one on feet. We’d still be using T179 really hard – except he out-bred himself with a good footed son – WFL Merlin 018A.

• IMPORTANT INFORMATION • Mail or Phone Bids: If you cannot attend the sale, bids may be directed to Wedel Red Angus or one of the listed buyer representatives. All bids will be handled confidentially. Lunch is on us, and begins at 11:00 am CST. Pledge: Wedel Red Angus guarantees the fertility and disposition of every animal purchased through the sale.
Sale Terms and Conditions: Bidding: The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Terms of the sale are cash.
Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the
risk of purchaser as soon as it is sold. Wedel Red Angus will care for sold animals free of charge until loaded for shipment, or until one week after the sale - but at the purchaser’s risk.

Identification: Seller offers each bull with a readable tattoo corresponding to its registration. Guarantees: All animals sell under the guaran-
tees as suggested by the Red Angus Association of America, a copy of which will be made available at the sale.
Rights and Obligations:
A) The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute an agreement between buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding upon both. Each sale or resale of an animal constitute a separate transaction. B) All persons attend the sale at their own risk. Neither Wedel Red Angus, nor any other person connected with the management of the sale assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.
Delivery:
• Bulls will be delivered FREE of charge for the first 500 miles and at cost after that. • Deliveries begin immediately after the sale. If you prefer not to take delivery as scheduled, we will care for your bull purchases at our risk for $3.00/hd/day to cover feed costs. The cost begins on April one and continues through the date your bulls are picked up. • Please advise the sale clerks of an appropriate date for your bulls to be picked up and the appropriate feed costs will be included in your invoice. • We always appreciate your assistance in getting the bulls delivered in a timely manner.
Retained interest & Semen Rights:
Wedel Red Angus will retain 1/2 semen interest on all bulls. Purchaser receives 100% possession and 100% salvage value. Wedel Red Angus reserves the right to collect, use and market semen; purchaser has equal right to do the same. Unless mutually agreed, semen collection will be at Wedel’s expense and the purchaser’s convenience. Wedel Red Angus will assume full liability at the purchase price of the bull during collection, including transportation to and from the collection facility - unless the collection is mutually agreed upon between Wedel and the purchaser, in which case the liability and expenses will be shared equally.
Scrotal Circumference & Fertility:
All bulls have been fertility examined to insure against seminal vasculitis. All bulls have been semen tested and the purchaser will receive a breeding soundness evaluation which follows the guidelines established by the Society of Theriogenology. Scrotal measurements were adjusted to 365 days.

Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth. Research Confirmation Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.
Rancher Trusted While market research validates the price advantage of Red Angus heifers, ranchers have tested and trusted her worth on the range for years. Red Angus females are desirable as replacement heifers because they mature into productive mother cows that reward producers with extra dollars in their pockets on sale day.
The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.
Red Angus cows have gained ranchers’ trust as a complete package through fertility, eshing ability, good disposition, longevity and excellent overall production. They produce feeder calves that earn premiums in the yard and on the rail through docility, feed efciency, conversion and carcass merit.
They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.
Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring protability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. ■

Red Angus Guide to EPDs HB ...... HerdBuilder Index – Need bulls for developing a profitable cowherd and maximizing the value of marketed progeny? Select a bull with a high HB value.
CEM .... Calving Ease Maternal – Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted.
GM ...... GridMaster Index – If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profit.
STAY.... Stayability – The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age.
CED ..... Calving Ease Direct – Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted.
MARB .. Marbling Score – Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime.
BW...... Birth Weight – Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW.
YG ...... Yield Grade – Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on gridmarketed progeny.
WW ..... Weaning Weight and YW ....Y earling Weight – Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are.
CW...... Carcasss Weight – Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue.
Milk .... Milk – Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production.
REA ..... Rib Eye Area – Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade.
ME ...... Maintenance Energy – Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight.
FAT ..... Backfat – Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.
HPG..... Heifer Pregnancy – Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.
