WELCOME Welcome to the 19th annual Croissant Red Angus production sale. This year we will be offering 84 yearling Red Angus bulls ready to go to work for you. The bulls represented this year deliver profit traits well above breed averages, while keeping cost traits below breed average. Our goal is to provide you genetics that will work in a multitude of environments and management systems to create a return on investment for the genetics. Each year the Superior Livestock Auction value data keeps supporting the value of Red Angus, right at $2.00/cwt more than black Angus calves, within these commercial herds. This summer we saw the same trend with Croissant Red Angus sired calves, going beyond their contemporaries as well. In an effort to help our customers, we work with our network of contacts to help assist in the sale of your cattle when they go to market and work with Top Dollar Angus to help pay the enrollment fee for those who qualify. Genetic investment is paying back. Each year we finish out cattle here at the ranch. This year those calves have been performing beyond expectations. We will have 2 loads of fed cattle that leave not long after sale that will weigh 1400 pounds. These calves are predominately Croissant Red Angus sired calves. In fact, we had calves at reimplant time in January, that were already over 1300 pounds. Not too bad for February calves. This is an excellent sign that we can keep cows a moderate size and still produce pounds that impact profitability through the beef production system. This year the Red Angus Association has transitioned to the single step evaluation system, BOLT. With this transition we want to make sure that everyone is aware of some of the changes. First, CED and CEM have had a base change. For example, a CED of 10 in the past, now will be a 16 (each would have a 10% ranking). So, pay close attention to the percentile rankings of the traits for bulls. The Sorensen family has brought another good set of bulls again this year. It is great to have the opportunity to work with Kelly and Kitty every year. Their bulls come with the same Croissant Red Angus guarantee as always. We look forward to continuing our relationship with them into the future. We would like to thank all of the friends and neighbors that help at sale and throughout the year, without them it would be a far greater challenge. Thank you. We look forward to seeing you in person on March 23rd at the sale. If you are unable to join us in person, there are other ways to be a part of the sale, DVAuction, sale day phones, or absentee bidding. Visitors are always welcome and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us, we are always here to help. Sincerely, Larry, Jean, Sallie, Kevin, and Alisa The Croissant Red Angus family

Competitor leads off an impressive sire group by Iceman, the top selling bull from our 2017 sale going to the partnership of 5L Red Angus and Westphal Red Angus. This bull is very similar to his “old man” in both his powerful phenotype, and the way he adds explosive early growth but stays between the ditches for both calving ease and maternal calving ease. If pay weight matters in your program, here is a great candidate with top 10% or better ranks whether you sell calves at weaning, as yearlings, or feed them yourself and sell pounds on the rail.

Those who like to stack important cows in the pedigrees of the bulls they buy will appreciate Triple Threat, who leads off an impressive sire group of Tesla sons. His dam is a 110 MPPA daughter of Merlin T179 who is known for siring excellent feet and structure. Tesla’s 104 MPPA dam produced 16 natural and ET calves by her 13th birthday, and has two other sons selling as lots 54 & 55. With 11 traits in the top 25% of the breed 351F is capable of adding profit at each segment of the beef supply chain. RETAINING HALF INTEREST.

We purchased this bull’s dam from our friends the Mehlhoff family at 5L as a heifer calf, and she fit right in weaning her 4th calf as a 5-year-old and earning a 106 MPPA in the process. Zero Hour justifies his elite HerdBuilder & GridMaster ranks by spreading a best 3% CED to a top 10% ADG EPD. He also covers economically relevant traits of improving cow productive lifespan, daughters unassisted calving and carcass value with top 1/3 ranks for CEM, STAY, MARB and REA.

Most of our customers run multi-sire pastures, and turning out half brothers with similar EPD profiles is one way to ensure not just a uniform calf crop to market, but perhaps more importantly a uniform set of replacements that develop into a uniform cow herd. Just like his brothers before, and several still to come, LJC Faraday 538F offers excellent calving ease with triple-digit growth and places positive selection pressure on the traits that determine both reproductive success and post-weaning profitability. Fortitude is a good example of our program’s direction. He gives us extra post-weaning performance and carcass merit but stays in bounds for calving ease and mature cow size. This bull should also move us towards the goal of lowering replacement rates as he combines improved Stayability with elite heifer pregnancy rates. His Tradn Designs dam is as structurally sound as they come and maintains her body condition on our native eastern Colorado range. RETAINING HALF INTEREST.

Eros 573F is the 2019 edition of Alisa’s college fund but owning him will help your cow herd out just as much as Alisa’s future. He is the lead bull in a strong sire group of Redeem sons that will impress with their consistent depth of body, soft flank and natural thickness. This will be a tremendous bull to put on a set of cows. He predicts to add weaning weight, post-weaning gain and improve Yield Grade all while making daughters with higher heifer breed-up and that stay in the herd longer. RETAINING HALF INTEREST.

APEX is definitely in the running for “best-all-around” with a 14 CED to 101 YW spread and exceptional EPDs for cow herd building and carcass value traits. He is the first of several excellent Triumph half-brothers throughout this sale. His 109 MPPA dam weaned her second calf as a three-year old and is 2 for 2 in producing outstanding bulls for our customers. Last year’s Top Gun son sold to Carmin Ranch in Snyder, CO. We had high expectations for Tesla when he sold to long-time customers, Shaw Ranch in Joes, Colorado, who’ve been great partners on more than one “Front-End” herd bull. I think it’s safe to say that as a sire, Tesla has exceeded all of our wildest hopes. Bull after bull after bull stepping up and hitting it out of the park, just like 639F who bridges the gap between the easiest calving 4% of Red Angus with the fastest gaining 3%. With 11 traits in the top 15%, it’s no surprise he shares elite status for both HerdBuilder & GridMaster.

More live calves and more unassisted births from your 2-year-olds usually translates to quicker breed back and a higher percentage of calves weaned. Count on all that from Loverboy and more. Sure, he’s a best 2% calving ease specialist but he still packs triple digit growth and top 10% post-weaning gain. Better yet, he comes with elite cow herd building traits thanks in no small part to his moderate, sound easy-keeping 937Z dam.

We switch gears a little as lots 14 & 15 are Triumph sons. Remember, Tesla and Triumph are half-brothers and when you look at the amazing EPD tabulation of 437F, you’ll see strong family resemblance especially when studying those traits that dictate cow/calf profitability such as calving ease, maternal calving ease and Stayability. Two highly productive grandams support that very maternal prediction with the 105 MPPA “801” and the 103 MPPA “462.”

Sound as a dollar and moves like a cat. 915F is long, deep thick and good. Everyone finds this bull! The older he gets, the better he gets. Unnoticed at birth due to his 92 birth wt. ratio, he pushed towards the front with a 108 WW ratio. Then any bulls that were on the fence got pushed to the wrong side when 915 earned post-weaning ratios of 123 ADG, 120 IMF and 102 REA.

If you sell them by the pound and want to add a little more performance into your next calf crop, don’t overlook Derringer. As a twin his EPDs don’t reflect power of his individual performance since twins don’t get ratioed against the rest of the calf crop. His EPDs do reflect his tremendous CED to YW spread and elite cow herd traits that his 107 MPPA dam no doubt contributed to.

If you sell calves at weaning and summer at high altitude, here’s a bull for you. 051F combines width and length to pack top 5% growth into a moderate, square, agile frame. His daughters should be like him and his 9-year-old dam wide, deep through the heart girth and soft flanked, and you won’t have to haul hay to feed excess mature size.

Sherman makes a strong case that there are front-end Tesla sons way deep in this sale order. His dam is a 105 MPPA Destination granddaughter, one of Red Angus’s great sources of heifer pregnancy and maternal calving ease. Sherman started out good and just kept getting better, posting ratios of: 97 BW, 109 WW, 115 YW, 123 ADG, 116 IMF and 108 REA.

If the old bull by the front gate is getting long in the tooth, here’s his replacement. 539F delivers as much eye appeal as any bull in the sale and delivers a 15 CED to 113 YW spread. If you want a herd of cows that you can be proud to show off and a steer crop that steps heavy on the scales, 539F is another strong Tesla son that fills that order.

RED ANGUS BULLS If you need to breed a set of heifers and summer at higher elevation, these bulls would like to apply for that job. These 8 bulls average over 18 CED which ranks them (as a group) in the best 2% of Red Angus for calving ease. For ranchers who think a generation ahead, their daughters should fill the same bill. The average maternal calving ease of these 8 bulls ranks in the best 11% of the breed.

RED ANGUS BULLS If PAP scores are a concern due to the elevation at which you summer, the bulls on these two pages can fill your order. Croissant Red Angus PAP tests every bull with the help of Dr. Tim Holt. Due to the market we serve, we utilize those results in our own selection. Bulls that score very high are culled from the sale so none of our customers (regardless of elevation) have the opportunity to own them. Lots 64-71 all had low PAP scores to be considered for use at high elevation.

RED ANGUS BULLS Croissant genetics have been responsible for dozens of GridMaster awards and many of the feeders in this region have positive experiences with cattle that have utilized our genetic inputs. Croissant Red Angus routinely shares various electronic promotional platforms beginning with the cattle for sale page of our website with our bull customers. We want our customers to receive the best possible return for their investment in superior Croissant Red Angus genetics so we’ve developed some tools to help increase awareness when those cattle sell. We invite you to let us know a couple weeks prior to marketing your calf crop by providing descriptions of what you are selling, health protocols and delivery terms. If this is of interest, please contact Kevin anytime.

We believe this year’s sale offering is the deepest we’ve ever offered, and that’s thanks in large part to the large number of Tesla and Iceman calves. Here we are at the final page of the catalog and find this excellent Iceman son that combines best 8% calving ease with triple-digit yearling weight and top 12% quality grade.

PAP SCORES: For the last three years we have been working with Dr. Holt to provide PAP scores on all the bulls. Below is a risk assessment chart that Dr. Holt has put together to help relay the risk level of the bulls offered depending on what elevation they are going to be used. In this effort we have taken the extreme risk bulls, according to Dr. Holt, and culled them from the sale group. These bulls do not go on to sire calves anywhere. This is one of the efforts that we make to improve the genetics
that we offer not only for our high-country producers, but to make a positive impact on the beef industry to lower incidence of brisket disease in the feedyards that your calves will continue on to. We feel that it is our responsibility, as genetic providers, that we look beyond just the traditional traits that impact the overall profitability of the beef production system. If you have any questions about this please contact us or Dr. Holt, he is always happy to help in this effort.
Dr. Timothy N. Holt, DVM 2019 Location of PAP Test: Briggsdale, Colorado Croissant Red Angus: Elevation 4,986 feet PAP Risk* Factor –Moderate Elevation Test Chart PAP test conducted at elevation 4000-5500 ft. (70% Repeatable, Predictive Value)

SALE INFORMATION Our Goal: Produce functional cattle for our short grass semi-arid environment and provide honest value and service to our customers.
Our Program: Our program is founded on balanced trait selection using proven sires. We put the emphasis on Carcass, Maintenance, and Reproductive traits including low birth weight and do not chase extreme growth. These traits add value through carcass quality, lower maintenance costs, increased longevity of the females, and reduced labor inputs with the added benefit of the accompanying “convenience traits”. We focus on fertile, easy handling females with mothering ability. The cattle presented here are out of cows that are bred to work within our limited resources, producing calves that excel at weaning, perform in the feedyard and add value on the rail. We hold our females to a “no excuses” production criteria. If they can’t raise a calf every year in our environment they are culled from the herd.
Development Program: The bulls are developed on the ranch. After weaning the bulls are grazed out on pasture for a month and then fed a high-quality roughage ration with a vitaminmineral supplement to gain 3.25 lb./day on average. The bulls are kept in a large dry pen, which gives plenty of exercise. We do not target 1,300 or 1,400 lb. yearling weights. The development program is designed for the bulls to make their own way on the range and hold up to the rigors of their first breeding season. They are guaranteed breeders & ready to work!
234 All bulls PAP tested.
Health: Bulls have had their branding, preconditioning, and weaning shots of 5-way BRD, Pasteurella, 7-way Somnus, parasite control, and StayBred VL5. Dr. Shoemaker will fertility test all bulls and the results will be provided for each bull sold.
Ranch Directions: We are located halfway between Sterling & Fort Collins on Highway 14, then 5 miles North on County Road 83. We have a sign pointing North at the intersection of Highway 14 and County Road 83.

SALE INFORMATION CATALOG INFORMATION: All EPDs, including carcass, have been updated to reflect the latest performance data including ultrasound and DNA Genomic Panels. Percentile rankings are listed below the EPD table. The measurement data with their in-herd performance ratios are listed in a table just to the right of the pedigree. Scrotal measurements will be on a supplement sheet available sale day and posted on our website as soon as they are completed.
of each EPD is adjusted by a constant which does not change the sensitivity, but moves its average away from zero. Red Angus EPDs are multi-breed and calculated by the BOLT system. The breeds involved are all on the same base and can be directly compared. The percentile ranking we publish represents the rank of the individual in the Red Angus Breed. A 50% percentile rank is the average for the breed.
We present all the data on all the bulls to make your selection easier and more complete! We are available to help you interpret any information in this catalog, give us a call or stop by. Sale day announcements will take precedence over the catalog information.
To compare two bulls, take the difference of their Weaning Weight EPDs to see the expected differences in their progeny. An example would be: bull 1 with a WW of 75 and bull 2 with a WW of 55, bull 1 would produce, on average, a calf crop with a 20 pound higher weaning weight. This simple example shows how the comparison could be applied for each of the traits.
EPDs: Before reading the following definitions, one must come to terms with what is called base. The range
