President Letter

What a year to be a member of the Wisconsin Hereford Association! We have a lot going on in Wisconsin’s Hereford industry. Starting out the year we had a great turn out for our January annual meeting. We have members winning a national award, a national queen, and the Junior Nationals coming to Madison. The WHA is also known to American Hereford Association representatives to be a strong and active association. And based on the cattle I’ve seen at the Wisconsin State Sale, sale catalogs and advertisements of Wisconsin owned cattle, we can and do compete with the best of them!

Before informing you what your board has been up to this first quarter, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support as we move into the busy seasons of spring and summer. First and most importantly I want to inform you that your board has taken on a very important task of transitioning our duties of the treasurer’s position from an individual member to Compeer Financial. This has been a very complex, detailed, and ongoing transition but, a positive one. Compeer has been eager and accommodating to work with us in providing guidance in working with our bank, through our annual budget, tax preparation, as well as working to streamline our annual sale. Compeer is a community oriented company and is bonded and insured to ensure our funds are secure. Our secretary, Lisa Davis, is our liaison between the WHA, and Compeer and has been working nonstop in providing our association with what should be a great relationship now and in the future.

On the advertising front, the WHA has attended the Driftless Conference in Iowa, The GrassWorks Conference in The Wisconsin Dells, and the WPS Farm Show in Oshkosh. Members attending our booths have met a lot of people and handed out a lot of WHA material. I personally worked the WPS and gained a broad perspective of what people think about Hereford cattle and what topics concern today’s beef industry. Based on my conversations, I believe we are on the right track in breeding the right kind of Hereford cattle.

We have a couple more events to attend this year including the Farm Technology Days this summer and World Beef Expo this fall. We should have our 2023 Member Directory printed by then and copies to hand out to those visiting our booth.

Your advertising committee has also purchased a monitor and put together a video feed with photos of our members’ farms to run at the events we attend. I know Janet Weichert has sent out information on getting your farm on the video feed, but if you didn’t get the chance yet, take advantage of showcasing your farm and Hereford cattle and send a few pictures of your farm and cattle to Janet.

If you are interested in helping on any committee, your help is always needed and appreciated. Please look on our website at wisconsinherefords.org for committees of interest or just to see what is happening in your association. Lisa does a great job in keeping info up to date through our website and emails.

As I end this letter I’d like to take the time to congratulate Huth Polled Herefords and Josh Scharf on their recognition of the national Environmental Stewardship Award during the NCBA Conference in New Orleans in February. Nice work!

As always, If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.

Noah’s Notes

Spring is a long-awaited sight for many farmers and ranchers. It is the mark of a new season without cold temperatures, snow, and provides new life with white-faced calves being born across the country. Hereford cattle have been in high demand and the sales have reflected that. I highly encourage you to look at the sales results page on our AHA website. Study the numbers, the pedigrees, and the programs that are being sought after and think to how you can incorporate those genetics or philosophies into your program for your customers next year.

While this time of year wraps up the sale season it does hold plenty of new beginnings as well. Many of you may have seen the new MyHerd Search engine that has been launched. This is a fantastic tool to begin utilizing in your own operations. There is so many capabilities that you and your customers have access to now with your searches for registered cattle that were not previously available. I encourage you to implement this tool. Go to the resources page and watch all of the new videos pertaining to this tool. Study it, implement it, and reap the rewards! This spring also holds the start of The Fall Calf Feedout Program that is going to be held at HRC Feedyards. This is going to be another great tool to utilize for producers across the country. It is very similar to the Spring cald Feedout Program held in the fall. The enrollment deadline is May 1st, so be sure to take a look at this information on the website or contact me for more details!

Finally, the summer show season is going to be upon us before we know it! I personally can’t wait to begin traveling to state preview shows and field days in the months of May and June. I am excited to see what juniors bring to the table this year as well as see what they have bred for and what different genetics they are using in their programs. Being able to watch these juniors work with their animals early in the summer and then getting to watch them compete later on at the Junior National Hereford Expo is one of my favorite parts of the whole summer. Speaking of the JNHE, don’t forget that the Early deadline for entries is May 15th and the final deadline is June 1st. Madison Wisconsin is the place to be from June 8th-14th, you aren’t going to want to miss what Amy, Bailey, Chloe, and the junior board have in store!

I hope that everyone made it through the winter season, and that calving seasons treated you well. Keep powering through and striving to make the best Hereford cattle yet. Please never hesitate to reach out and I would love to hear from you!

Dave and Laurie Steinhoff Inducted into WHA Hall of Fame

Dave and Laurie Steinhoff started their joint cattle adventure with Red Angus-Hereford Cows before establishing Steiny’s Herefords in 2003. They researched breeds and decided Herefords were the best fit with their calm demeanors and known mothering capabilities. Their first purchase was from the Wisconsin Hereford Association State Sale where they purchased a cow/calf pair from Warren and Isabel Brown and an open heifer from Biggs Herefords. They continued to grow their herd by purchasing from many Wisconsin Hereford Breeders including their first bull purchase from Stone Creek Farm.

Dave grew up on a Registered Holstein dairy operation in Tomah, WI and showed dairy cattle throughout the duration of his 4-H and FFA career. His family hosted Farm Progress Days on their farm in 1980. Laurie grew up raising commercial beef and was an active participant in 4-H both as a youth and adult leader. Both Dave and Laurie work off of the farm therefore they rely on the entire family to keep operations running smoothly.

Since establishing Steiny’s Herefords, Dave and Laurie have been active members of the Wisconsin Hereford Association. Dave has served multiple positions on the board including the role of President. He also served as the Indianhead Polled Hereford Association President. With their family, they hosted the WHA as a stop on the State Tour in 2013.

Their daughter, Liz, kicked off their love for showing by exhibiting at the county, state, and national levels. Liz exhibited the champion cow/calf pair multiple years in a row at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior show with a Fancy Judy/Mohican Hunter cow they purchased from Stone Creek Farm. The family has continued to show and has had some successes including the 2011 Wisconsin State Fair Reserve Champion Hereford Heifer and the 2019 Wisconsin State Fair Supreme Champion Bull.

Their customers have seen success in the showring as well, most recently was the champion cow/calf pair at the 2022 Wisconsin State Fair Open Show.

Dave and Laurie have always been big advocates for the WJHA juniors. In 2017 they reached out to BJ Jones about starting a heifer donation program to support the junior association. In 2018 the WJHA raffled off Steiny’s EB Whitey (aka EllieMae). Won by the Rhiner Family – Whitey (EllieMae) had a successful show career and was recently named a dam of distinction. This heifer donation program has continued every year since; thanks to gracious donors.

2023 is the 20 year anniversary of Steiny’s Herefords. If you ask Dave today why he continues to raise and show Herefords, he will tell you that it’s due to the cattle people that have come into his life throughout the years, and it is his favorite thing to do with his family. Dave and Laurie are excited about the future of Steiny’s Herefords, counting down the years until their grandson Morgan can start showing.

Wisconsin Farm Receives Regional Environmental Stewardship Award

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) announced that the joint operation of Huth Polled Herefords and S&H Livestock Enterprises, LLC, in Oakfield, Wisconsin, was selected as one of seven regional winners of the 2022 Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP). The farm was recognized during the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans.

“Farming and ranching families across the country continue to incorporate practices that protect and preserve land and water resources for future generations,” said NCBA President Don Schiefelbein. “These regional winners represent the cattle industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Established in 1991, ESAP celebrates outstanding land stewards in the cattle industry. The regional winners will compete for the national award, which will be presented during NCBA’s Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., April 24-27, 2023. The 2022 Environmental Stewardship Award Program Regional Winners are:

Region I: Lamb Farms, Inc., Oakfield, New York

Region II: Carter Cattle Company, LLC, Pintlala, Alabama

Region III: Huth Polled Herefords and S&H Livestock Enterprises, LLC, Oakfield, Wisconsin

Region IV: Parks Ranch, Goliad County, Texas

Region V: Mannix Brothers Ranch, Helmville, Montana

Region VI: Fulstone Ranches, Smith, Nevada

Region VII: Jorgensen Land & Cattle Partnership, Ideal, South Dakota

“Jerry and Josh are exceptional examples of a beef cattle operation focusing on long-term sustainability,” said Brady Zuck, Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association president. “They have demonstrated an approach for other operations to emulate regarding sustainability of operations, transitioning ownership and securing the viability of the cattle operation, and they have focused on managing the land with grazing cattle to improve the environment.”

Over the past 60 years, Jerry Huth has established a reputation for genetics and cattle which are productive and profitable in their environments. Josh Scharf first joined the operation as an employee then transitioned into ownership through S&H

Livestock Enterprises. Together, their expanded enterprise required more pasture, leading the team to pursue utilizing 130 acres of state-managed public land that borders the farm. The public-private partnership to graze state land has been beneficial to the sustainability and expansion of the operation while also providing environmental and habitat benefits to public land. Jerry and Josh ensure pastures maintain good soil health by effectively managing stocking rates and resting pastures. These practices produce nutritious, dense and high-energy vegetation for cattle and reduce erosion and water runoff.

“Our main goal is to maintain and improve the quality of the environment for future generations while producing a quality, profitable product,” said Jerry Huth of Huth Polled Herefords. “We partner with various organizations to continuously improve our farm and enhance our sustainability efforts.”

ESAP is generously sponsored by companies and federal agencies who share the cattle industry’s commitment to caring for the environment and protecting natural resources. Sponsors including U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, Corteva Agriscience, McDonald’s, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partner with NCBA to promote environmental stewardship throughout the beef supply chain. Marketing Strategies and Building a Herd Plan for The Future

There is a famous quote by Benjamin Franklin stating that, “Failing to plan, is planning to fail” and perhaps there is no better statement that applies in livestock marketing. Do you have a strategic marketing plan for your cattle operation? Do you know when and how to market your calves or are you that farmer that decides one morning that I am hooking up the trailer and the calves are going to market that very same day? In this article I want to address what I see working for many folks and what I see as a “forecast” for what lies ahead in 2023 and beyond.

Having a strategic plan is key to any cattle program. Planning for marketing sometimes gets overlooked but is as important as making breeding decisions and who you work with to incorporate bringing in new seedstock into your breeding programs. Identifying someone to assist in the marketing process who you can trust, who knows your cattle, your health protocols and can present your cattle program in the best light possible gives you optimal chance to be successful and maximize profit. No matter what time of year you calve you can use a similar overall program. As more breeders are splitting between spring and fall calving a few key points should be stressed. As a spring calver it often comes down to when you wean and vaccinate in the fall that influences when you market in the fall. Calves that are weaned 30+ days and are double vaccinated are usually under the strongest demand. One question that I get quite often is what product was used when the calves were vaccinated? There are a lot of products on the market and the more information a producer can provide the better. In many cases buyers are looking for the product used so if they have a boostering protocol they can use the same product or products. For fall calving herds, the same things apply but one thing to keep in mind is that the spring grass brings out buyers. Picking a sale date prior to spring planting but nearing turnout to grass brings a window of opportunity that usually offers a very aggressive market. Perhaps the number one thing I can stress is communication with your marketing partner. Advance consigning allows sale management to make phone calls, advertise and promote your cattle which again gives you the best chance to maximize the price you receive. As a producer also try to gain knowledge on the services and programs that your marketing partner has to offer. In some cases some sales/locations have special vet certified programs or preconditioning protocol programs intended to help producers identify and properly promote their cattle if they have done all of the prerequisite health work. By doing so you are again putting yourself in the best possible position in maximizing your profit. These sales and programs allow feedlots to purchase cattle that have had very similar or in many cases the exact same health protocol making a more uniform set of calves available within a given sale available for purchase. By taking advantage of such programs you as a producer are making the decision to

make sure your calves aren’t being excluded from a potential buyer based on the lack of pre-conditioning work. Within Equity there are locations that offer a “Purple Tag” programs. This is an excellent example of a pre-conditioning program that offers a guide for weaning calves 30-45 days combined with a structured vaccination program. With most beef producers only marketing once or twice a year it is imperative that you hit the right times and do everything you can to get the most for your livestock. Remember we are here to assist and help you!

Over winter I spoke to numerous beef cattle organizations and one topic I have addressed is having a 3-to-5-year plan for your replacements. With the national cow herd being at a record low in numbers and some indications are that the cow herd is still in a slight contraction phase in 2023, I believe come later this fall we are going to see a premium on good quality replacement females. With drought-stricken areas around the country receiving quite a bit of snow and moisture over the winter I firmly believe we are going to see those markets explode. As we all know fertilizer and feed prices are also high, so margins are not as great as they were when we last reached these market prices in 2013-2014. With cull cow markets pushing and exceeding 100.00/CWT this is a good time to have a youth movement within your herd. Maximizing return on those older bottom-end cows now and replacing them with younger females will set your program up for the next 3-5 years as the cow herd expands and we see prices climb on those high-end replacement females. Planning now can ensure that you are set up for success for the next 3-5 years. If prices on replacements continue to climb you will be glad you have your cow herd in the prime of their lives, at just the right time! Marketing is an important aspect in any cattle operation. Having a plan and a partner in the marketplace makes a lot of sense. Markets are always changing and having that person you can trust as your partner goes a long way to making your program as profitable as possible. Remember as a producer, strive be that program who has a plan! Failing to do so is simply planning to fail!

Congratulations to Marie Prodell for being selected as the National Junior Hereford Association's Hereford Highlight for April 2023! Marie is currently serving as the 2023 WJHA President, and the Wisconsin Hereford Queen. Congratulations Marie and Thank You for representing the state of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Herefords!

I have officially stepped down as the Wisconsin Hereford Queen and have handed the crown and sash to Marie Prodell from Algoma, WI. I am proud to call Marie a friend and look forward to serving with her and guiding her through her journey in running for National Hereford Queen. At the State Sale in March, I gave my departing words and I would like to reiterate some things I touched on for you all to think about as you go about exhibiting and raising your cattle…I was 8 years old when I set my sights on the National Hereford Queen crown. I had a very positive interaction with the queen at the time and it has fueled my passion for the breed, its people and the work that we do to improve our cattle. I challenge everyone to light that fire and fuel that passion of a junior in their area to pursue their passions and chase their dreams. I always had the passion for Herefords, but the queen I met showed me that I could be so much more than just a girl that loved Herefords. I could be the girl that leads, educates and helps others in all things they are passionate about, even if it isn’t Hereford or agriculture related. Every junior needs a support system, I ask that you be that support system for someone so they chase their dreams. I am lucky to have had that starting at my young age, that made me confident in my abilities. Thank you all for your amazing support, words of encouragement, and for helping me make so many fun, fond memories. You’ve all been a crucial part of my life for the last 17 years and I couldn’t be more grateful to have served and represented you on the state and now National level.

Queen Corner

Hello everyone! My Name is Marie Prodell, and I am your 2023 Wisconsin Hereford Queen! This year I am a Junior at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls studying Agricultural Business and Animal Science. As a college student, I am heavily involved in the UWRF Beef Management, UWRF Block and Bridle, and the Livestock Judging Team. I try to stay busy planning events, attending classes, judging livestock, and being involved in school organizations. Outside of school, I help run MKP Cattle Company that in which I started in 2015 and am the President of the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association!

Join

An organization that has helped me the most in terms of my college career would be the UWRF Beef Management Team. Being a part of the BMT has given me the opportunity to grow my Hereford roots in my college education! This year I am serving as the team’s President. Being in this role gives me the opportunity to grow the Hereford breed at the UWRF Mann Valley Lab Farm! Currently we run around 15 Registered Hereford Cattle and are looking to grow our Hereford genetics in the years to come! It is in my hopes as the Hereford Queen and State President to help increase the knowledge of the Hereford breed to our members and open them up to different opportunities within the breed and the WHA!

This year as your WI Hereford Queen I am beyond excited for the events that we have planned for this year! We plan on attending many shows throughout the year to advocate and represent the Hereford breed in Wisconsin! Our first event of the year will be the WI Hereford State Preview Show in Jefferson, WI on June 3rd, and 4th! All our royalty members will be in attendance at the show! Keep an eye out for us at other events like Junior Nationals, Wisconsin State Fair, and World Beef Expo as well!

I do have a big announcement! This year we are incorporating our first ever queen’s service project! This year’s service project is called, “Pop Tops for a Cause!” The purpose of this project is to collect pop tops from cans to then donate the recycling proceeds to charitable causes in Wisconsin. These donations will helps support groups that have helped our members and their families in years past! A service project is a great way to grow our program and support a great cause! The royalty members will be making boxes and bins to collect pop pops at all the events we attend! Please start saving your tops! We will be starting to collect at Jefferson!

I look forward to being your state queen this year and I have many goals that I want to reach in the upcoming months so I can represent the breed to the best of my abilities! As always, let’s come home to Hereford! Hope to see you around this year!

July 8-14 for the 2023 Junior National Hereford Expo!

Complete schedule and event details can be found at hereford.org/youth/jnhe

We have a great need for adults who are willing to help expedite our arrival process and keep the trucks and trailers all flowing in the right direction beginning the afternoon of Saturday, July 8 and ending the morning of Sunday, July 9th. We also are looking for a smaller number of people to help keep our show ring and make ready areas cleaned up and free of manure during the show days of July 11-14.

Slow cook @250 for about 5 hours or until meat pulls apart easily with a fork and completely pull the meat apart and drain any fat/grease but leave the juices. Ad 4 oz's of "Johnny's" French Dip Au Jus with recommended amount of water. Cover Shredded Hereford Beef with all the Au Jus and juices, stir all together and simmer for about 1 hour stirring occasionally.

Serve on your favorite bun.

Can serve with barbecue sauce or ketchup if you wish but try it without first as that is how we like it.
