Cattleman, Friends and Neighbors,
We would like to invite you to our 58th Annual Production Sale on Saturday, January 10th, 2026. On behalf of the Dethlefs’, we want to thank all of our friends, neighbors, and customers that have made it possible for us all of these years. We have been fortunate to have met so many good people and good customers over the years throughout raising Angus cattle. We will be selling over 100 big, stout, 2-year-old virgin bulls. As always, these bulls are our top end. They are not picked over, and are selected from over 250 head of bull calves. They have never been fed hard and have been developed on pasture so they get plenty of exercise.
Wow, what a wild year it has been. We hope you have been able to take advantage of this incredible cattle market. With record low cow herd numbers, the leverage is back in the hands of the cattle producers and looks to stay that way for some time. Like always, high quality cattle are in high demand.
We are breeding bulls to work for the commercial customer. Every year we spend countless hours and drive thousands of miles seeking out the best bulls we can find to fit our program. We have our greatest success using sires we either purchase ourselves or sires we home raise. We ensure that every cow is being serviced by the best bulls possible. Due to this, you will see the consistency of quality non-AI bulls all throughout the sale.
Our true pride and joy is our cow herd. A good bull starts with the good cow behind him. Our herd is run very similarly to a commercial cow herd. We believe in culling our cow herd hard. We demand that our cows wean heavy calves, breed back on time, and hold their body condition throughout the year. We are always culling and striving to improve our herd.
For the last few years we have been having our steer mates custom finished. These steers have been gaining over 4 pounds per day and returning close to 100% choice and prime. They have been earning premiums and positive returns being sold on the grid. These are the type of cattle we have been breeding to ensure our customers’ success.
Just like last year, lots 1-30 are genomic tested. Most of the bulls’ growth EPDs increased substantially. Because of that, it would be safe to say that the bulls we did not genomic test would also have more growth than their current EPDs indicate. This is due to generations of breeding for growth and not just breeding for EPDs.
We hope the good Lord blessed you with enough rain and green grass. Cattle prices are the bright spot of all the things going on right now and the future looks bright for cattleman. As always, we would love for you to stop by to look at the cattle and visit. Be sure to join us for lunch on sale day.
Thank you again,
Annual

- Tired of buying over-conditioned yearling bulls that fall apart during the breeding season?
- Questioning if your yearling bull will be able to cover your mature cows?
- Afraid that your yearling bull won’t be able to service very many cows?
There is nothing wrong with using a yearling bull; however, you are often asking that bull to do a lot. More often than not, the bull has been fed a high concentrate diet and pushed until the time of the sale.
These young bulls, sometimes not much over a year of age, are turned out and expected to go to work going from a high concentrate diet to a forage diet.
On top of that, that yearling bull is still growing and maturing. His nutrient requirements are going to be a lot higher than a mature animal.
Therefore, he will often lose weight during the breeding season, and will need more supplement over the winter to be ready for the next breeding season.
When you receive one of our bulls, he is mature, in the right condition, and ready to go to work. His hardest year is already past him. He will be able to …
- Be trusted to service mature cows his first breeding season
- Be able to service many more cows his first breeding season
- Hold his body condition a lot easier throughout the season
- Last the whole breeding season, not wear out halfway through
- We don’t “push” our bulls, so they are not over-conditioned come sale time.
- They aren’t in a lot. They are out on pasture getting plenty of exercise until sale time.
- Our cow herd is expected to survive the same way a commercial herd does – have good dispositions, calve unassisted, raise a heavy calf and re-breed in a timely manner year after year.
- We don’t breed solely for EPDs. Instead we focus on breeding sound, functional cattle that look the part.
- We equally value growth, carcass and maternal traits in our cattle.

McConnell Regard 4260 was our pick of the 2022 McConnell Angus bull sale. His calves are exceptionally heavy-muscled and thick, growing and weighing really well. This is an impressive sire group and you’ll notice these bulls throughout the sale. We calved out his first daughters this last spring and they raised really nice calves. They have picture perfect udders and milked really well. They are deep-bodied and easyfleshing, much like their bull mates, and are well on their way to being great cows.

Coalition is a Canadian import we traveled up to Spickler Ranch South in North Dakota to get a look at. He walks on good feet and throws a lot of middle and fleshing ability. Calves show plenty of thickness and daughters are feminine and docile with great udder quality. We have used Coalition on heifers with great success.

Architect is a very popular Genex sire used heavily across the country. He is a proven heifer bull that sires growth in his calves. We had the opportunity to see him at Genex in Billings and were impressed by his feet and structural correctness. The herd he came from is known for some of the best uddered cows you’ll ever find.

S Niagara 005 was our pick of the yearling bulls at Spickler Ranch South in North Dakota. He is the son of SS Niagara and the Spickler donor cow S Elba 1004. The calves from this bull impress us more and more as time goes by. They show tremendous depth of body and a good hip. His calves are easy keeping, good footed, and have good growth. This bull will produce a lot of crowd favorites the next few years.

RCL Stunner 0408 is a high-performance son of Musgrave Stunner we bought from Geppert’s Rock Creek Livestock in South Dakota. This stunner son weaned at over 900 lbs. and looked flawless. We lost him his first season due to breeding injury but had semen collected on him. His sons show more frame and have excellent feet. His calves performed really well.

Duke is a true calving ease sire that still has growth and performance. We were able to make a trip to see Duke in person and were very impressed. The reports of daughters in production are very good. They have great udders and mothering ability. One thing we noticed at an early age is how tame and quiet his calves are. The Duke cattle have great dispositions, incredible length of body, structural correctness, and attractiveness.

We purchased Bloodline K481 from the Kuck Ranch. One of the reasons we were drawn to him was because of his mother – she’s as good of a cow as you can find. She’s a massively deep bodied, picture perfect cow that is one of their top producers. The Bloodline bulls are slightly more moderate in size and are super deep chested. This bull had perfect feet and his calves carry that on. We lost this bull last summer to a breeding injury but will continue to use him via AI. We can’t wait to get his daughters in production!

We bought Woodrow from the D Lazy T ranch in South Dakota. This bull’s donor dam has produced sale toppers for both the SAV herd in North Dakota and the D Lazy T ranch. These Woodrow bulls have a huge hind quarter and show more muscle expression than any sire we use. We are

CASH R400

This is an exceptional bull that we thought would be great to start the sale with. It’s hard to build a bull more structurally correct than this one. He has an abundance of muscle and power, yet he still moves well and has great feet. As you study him from all angles you will notice how powerful he is in his rear quarter. His sire is a home raised Net Worth son we think very highly of, he has produced some of our best calves.

Very good Niagara bull that is hard to fault. These Niagara bulls are very consistent in their type and were very well received on last year’s sale. He is well balanced, deep bodied, and stoutly constructed. His dam is a good producing cow with a 102-weaning ratio on 5 calves.

Great bull. This Bloodline son is large framed, deep ribbed, and big hipped. He’s a very attractively built bull that’s structurally sound. He’s also very good on paper and has a high RE EPD. Another good thing about this bull is his Identity dam, she’s a superb looking cow that consistently produces our top bulls. She has a weaning ratio of
on 6 calves.

Very impressively built bull. He’s an incredibly deep bodied, powerful bull that already has that herd bull look. He is built much like his dam – she’s a great one. She remained in the herd until 10 years of age and had a weaning ratio of 107 on 7 calves.

Very good bull. This Ten Times son puts a lot of good pieces together. He’s long spined, deep bodied, and heavy muscled. He is a
of a bull, you will notice when you study him from behind. His dam is young Sitz Logo daughter with a weaning ratio of 102 on 2 calves.

This is the biggest framed Regard son on the sale and he is massive in every shape and form. He’s a big, heavy boned bull that is loaded with muscle from front to back. His Identity dam is as good as

Another long bodied, powerful Regard son. He performed really well throughout his life and had above average weaning and yearling weights. His Wisdom dam is an outstanding cow that has raised a great bull calf in all 4 of her production years, we currently use one of her sons in our own herd.

Another Regard son you will notice on sale day. Despite his genomics indicating he’s a heifer bull, I would still be cautious about using him on heifers. His dam is an
producing cow with a weaning ratio of 106 on 5 calves.

Suitable for use on heifers. This Duke son is very docile. He’s extra-long

This President bull is larger framed, masculine, and big boned. He is impressively long and loaded with red meat. This bull already has a herd bull look and will add pounds to a calf crop. His dam is a pathfinder and has a weaning ratio of 108 on 4 calves. This isn’t the first bull calf she has raised that is at the top of our sale.

Big time bull that is suitable for use on heifers. Huge BW EPD to YW EPD spread on this bull – the best in the sale. This bull is just as good physically as on paper too. He is large framed

Attractively constructed Bloodline son with good length and frame size. His dam has a weaning ratio of 105 on 4 calves. She produced our 3rd

This is a well-built bull that’s attractive looking. He had above average weaning and yearling weights. His dam is a stout, deep bodied Upward granddaughter with a weaning ratio of 102 on 7 calves.

Really solid bull out of our America son. He’s structurally correct, long bodied, and powerful in his rear quarter. His dam is an attractive Capitalist 316 daughter that produces very well and his granddam is a really good Net Worth cow.

There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs).
GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association®, home to the largest and ever-growing single-breed beef cattle database.
EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide:
Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs
Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency)
The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to:
· more accurate selection
· easier identification of genetic outliers
· the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives
In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they have recorded an average of 15 progeny, depending on the trait. That’s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed’s weekly national cattle evaluation.
How do you know if EPDs are genomic-enhanced?
Ask your breeder, refer to the registration paper, or look for the AGI GE-EPD logo, Angus GS TM powered by partner Neogen or the HD50k by partner Zoetis. These images indicate animals for which genomic testing has been conducted and incorporated by AGI into GE-EPDs
