> LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello, long lost friends! It is so wonderful to be back in your mailbox and putting this issue of the magazine together. I never would have guessed what was ahead of us when we sent out our last issue in February. First and foremost I hope this edition of Ringside finds you healthy and thriving.

Secondly, thank you to everyone who has continued to support Ringside and promote through us during our small hiatus from print.

This past 6 months of unforeseen circumstances has allowed me, probably like many of you, to do some reflecting and observing. Some deep soul searching if you want. During that time I have discovered one thing to be true, agriculture is one of the most resilient industries in the world. It takes a certain type of person to make their livelihood in agriculture, especially when it comes to farming and raising livestock. So much of our success lies in the hands of forces we cannot control. We are tough, we have to be, but even the toughest of us can reach a breaking point.

I hope that as you flip the pages of this issue of Ringside you find hope. You step away from any breaking point you might be nearing and you pick yourself back up and dust yourself off. Even when every odd was stacked against the show industry this year, we found a way to allow our youth to show.

Special people in the sheep industry stepped up, took big risk and made amazing opportunities happen for our kids. It was soul filling to be at those events and watch families work together to do what they have poured their hearts into. While Spring wasn’t nearly the same for us, Summer, well she brought us that glimmer we all needed.

It is my wish that Fall treats you well and lambing season is successful. We are crossing our fingers that Ringside sees you at NAILE and other sales and shows this fall and winter. In the meantime, continue doing what we know best - working hard and pushing forward!

This spring and summer has definitely been a new experience for me, no live sales, no open shows, and I went on a vacation. I can not remember a time when I was home this much in the summer than I have been this year and I even judged a few virtual shows as well as put one on, something I never even had thought about.

I was glad to be able to attend and judge a few junior shows and catch up with my sheep friends. I am thankful for the people that organized shows throughout the country to give us some ‘normal’ back. After a few days at the Kentucky state fair wearing a mask, I can only recommend bringing several with you if the same rules apply for NAILE, after one day it smelled horrible.

I hope you are all staying healthy, getting something done at home and have been able to attend at least one show. If you are in the midst of lambing or breeding I hope you are having success.

David Trotter

The Voice Inside the Showring

A vital task to running any show is having a

confident, easy-to-follow announcer. David Trotter is the reign of the announcer stand at many major sheep shows including NAILE and the All-American Junior Sheep Show. Since 1991, Trotter has been announcing at the North American so many may recognize his soothing, yet powerful voice.

“1991 was the first year for two changes: one is that the show was moved from the east wing to the south wing, and the second was myself becoming the announcer and I have loved it every year since! This year will be my 30th year,” Trotter said.

In addition, Trotter has announced at every All-American Junior Sheep Show since its debut in 1994 with the exception of two years. During those two years off, his daughters were starting to show and he wanted to help them. His resume also includes announcing for the Kentucky State Fair since the mid 90’s. He started announcing for the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in 2017, and is planning to announce at the Big E this fall.

What has been your method throughout the years?

“Over the years I have 8 | Ringside

developed a system,” Trotter explains, “I am a big stickler for writing my own results”. He records his own results at most shows except for the Junior Breeding Sheep Show day at NAILE. He chuckled when reminiscing on that hectic day, “4 rings is difficult and I have to have some help”. He’s found that his system helps him announce results in a timely manner without getting off track. In addition, he spends hours before these events going through names and towns sounding them out phonetically. “Over the years I’ve said names and hometowns wrong, I’ve learned not to take the corrections personally!” he says. “If they didn’t care they wouldn’t correct me, and the corrections help the both of us!”

“Background Noise”

Trotter resides in Knox County, Indiana where he and his wife Debbie operate a small flock of ewes. His passion for the livestock industry stems from growing up on a commercial cattle and swine operation. He mentioned that he didn’t have much experience with sheep until his college career at Purdue University where he received his Bachelors degree in animal science. Upon graduation, he began his professional career with the Cooperative Extension Service where he was a 4-H Youth Development Educator for 33 years. Seven years into this role, he decided to go back to his alma mater to complete a Master’s degree in agronomy focusing on forage production. Going back to school provided him with a greater understanding of forage production in livestock operations which allowed him to share that knowledge with Indiana producers. During this time he was also appointed to the American Lamb Board by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 2006 and served as the state representative on the American Sheep Industry Association Board of Directors. In addition, he served as president for the Indiana Sheep

Association and Indiana Forage Council and worked with the Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance which lead him to a trip to Macedonia to work with shepherds and explain the importance of the sheep industry to their government.

Since his retirement in 2011, his family and additional work with the Oxford Sheep Association has kept him busy. His two daughters, Anna and Sarah, live nearby with their families and his 16-month grandson keeps him on his toes. As Secretary of the Oxford Sheep Association since 2012, he finds that each day is different, but mostly involves registration and transfer work. He also updates the social media pages and websites, along with keeping up with the database. Not growing up in the sheep industry, he loves putting a name to a face and providing opportunities for young exhibitors.

“My favorite part of being the Oxford Secretary is getting to know the Oxford breeders and meeting the people that made the breed what it is today”, Trotter said.

When it comes to advice for breeders Trotter says “Remember that these juniors are our future.

Whether you’re breeding wether-type or frame sheep – we have to treat these juniors right!” Trotter treats juniors right by giving them advice, finding reasonable price points, and always taking the time to answer questions.

“We need to treat them like we want them to be the next generation, because they are,” Trotter said.

While there are many voices that float around the barn on showday, we think David Trotters voice is one to be heard.

Advice for Ringside Listeners

Trotters’ advice for juniors is, “Simply, have fun!

Spicy Chicken Salad Wraps These wraps are one of my all time favorite summer time grab and go meals. This is super easy to make and the best part is that they taste better on day 2 when all of the flavors have married together. Now, I have some picky peeps in the show family so I always make some with cilantro and some without. I personally love it with cilantro, however, some seem to think that cilantro tastes like soap. Who knew?

Ingredients 3 whole broasted chickens Real Mayo (Miracle Whip is too sweet for this dish) Taco Seasoning 1 bunch of cilantro 6 avocado’s Lemon Juice Flour tortillas I get white and green so they know which ones have cilantro and which ones do not.

1. Debone and shred the chicken and separate into two bowels.

2. Add mayo a little at a time until it is a creamy consistency 3. Begin to add in taco season until mixture has an orange look 4. 2 squeezes of lemon juice 5. leaves of 1 bunch of cilantro finely chopped. (Optional) On the tortilla I thinly slice avocado and lay in a line on the tortilla then add several spoonful’s of the chicken salad, wrap and chill.

You have a quick lunch that is grab and go. The kids love it and has a great source of protein and healthy fats. Feeds approximately 30 people.

Preston Forsee

With a start in 1925 Forsee Southdown’s of Owenton, Kentucky has become a household name within the sheep industry. Similarly, Preston, the 22year old son of Brian and Margret Forsee has certainly made his mark within the junior show ring. Even with his junior show career coming to a close, Preston and his older sister Morgan (Weintraut) make up an integral part of Forsee Southdown’s; a part that goes far beyond the show ring. Upon his return to the farm in the fall of 2016, Preston’s role has evolved. Today, alongside his father Brian, Preston manages the 350head Southdown operation in its entirety. Even more recently, as a part of Forsee Show Stock- a brand Preston built for himself, they have added roughly thirty Dorper ewes to the flock.

Preston was asked why Dorpers- a far leap from the Southdown’s, and he went on to talk about what initially interested him in the Dorper breed. Preston said that having come from a breeding sheep background that he has always been intrigued by the wether side of the industry, and how different Dorpers were. When the opportunity arose he purchased twenty ewes from Kelly Hair Sheep of Lipan, Texas and another

thirteen ewes from Hobbs Show Lambs in Newton, Kansas. Having had the Dorpers for nearly two-years Preston talked about how impressed he has been with their maternal instincts, and their vigor and hardiness.

With intent to build up Dorper numbers, it seems they have become a staple at Forsee Show Stock.

Preston was born into the business and raising sheep is all he has ever known, but when asked what keeps him interested in the sheep industry, and what keeps his fire and passion burning Preston talked about how he is determined to continually make things better. Whether it is the quality of sheep, the farm itself or their customer relations and marketing avenues, Preston is set on improvement of the families operation. He later went on to talk about how he travels to several places each year to find the best genetics to use within their flock, to connect with various breeders and to see different operations; collecting knowledge to bring back and utilize at Forsee Southdown’s.

With eyes set on consistent growth we asked Preston what specific qualities he selects sheep on, and what areas of their own sheep he is focused on bettering. He later explained that he is really looking to improve muscularity and handling quality within their flock, he went on to make the comment “someday I hope the downs can compete with blackfaced sheep”. But, in terms of general selecting criteria Preston said structural quality is the most important to him, followed closely by breed character and that body type and power also play into his decisions. Whether it is selecting a new ewe or buck to purchase, or picking out his show string from their own flock, Forsee’s must have their priories in line- Forsee Southdown’s have captured numerous titles over the years, both within the ewe and buck ring. Personally

Preston has secured countless showmanship winnings, and yet when asked about his biggest accomplishment Preston recounted, “having the 2015 Supreme Ewe at The North American International Livestock Exposition with a March ewe lamb has been my biggest accomplishment”. With a lot to be proud of in the past ninety-five years, the future of Forsee Southdown’s looks to be just as bright!

2020 Oxford Foundation Flock Winners Announced

The American Oxford Sheep Association is happy to announce that five families received the Association’s Foundation Flock Award in 2020. Those families and many of the ewe donors came to the farmstead of Winning Ways Sheep Farm on Saturday, June 20, to make the exchange. Each of the five families received 4 Registered Oxford ewes that ranged in age from spring lambs to brood ewes up to 4 years old. These new Oxford families will also receive advice and first year breeding assistance from established Oxford producers near their home farms.
