The show is complete and congratulations to all! The barns are once again silent!

Exhibitors and their animals have returned to routine. Yet, there is still so much conversation about the show.

One of the highlights for the Brown Swiss breeders was the cheese and wine social at the Winkelman display. Friends gathered to talk about the results and also to enjoy the camaraderie so long awaited.

The judging of a show is official for that given day. Although we may not agree, it is necessary to accept them….and we do!

Brown Swiss Association NATIONAL JUNIOR BELL RINGER National Junior Bell Ringer Program Rules Rules ~ ~ Program The National Junior Bell Ringer Program provides an opportunity for Juniors across the country to participate in a national activity. It recognizes outstanding Juniorowned or leased animals exhibited at the Junior shows. The application for this contest is a photo and label explained below. Included in the contest are 16 standard female classes: Spring Heifer Calf, Winter Heifer Calf, Fall Heifer Calf, Summer Yearling Heifer, Spring Yearling Heifer, Winter Yearling Heifer, Fall Yearling Heifer, Yearling in Milk, Junior Two-Year Old, Senior Two-Year Old, Junior Three-Year Old, Senior ThreeYear Old, Four-Year-Old, Five-Year-Old, Aged Cow, and Component Merit Cow. ELIGIBILITY The National Bell Ringer contest is open to all National Brown Swiss Junior Members that meet the following requirements.

To be eligible for competition: 1.) In Junior Shows, the junior member who owns the animal is to show her. If the owner cannot attend the show, another Brown Swiss Association junior member may show the animal. Also, in a class where a junior member owns more than one animal, the owner must show one animal; another Brown Swiss Association junior member may show the second animal.

2.) An animal must have stood first or second at a Junior show and must have been shown by the junior.

3.) Animals entered in the National Junior Bell Ringer Program must be registered in the Official Herdbook, including CIE animals (white registration certificate with green border) or Second Step of the Identity Enrollment Program (IE green certificate with black border). The animal must be registered before the show with the Certificate of Registry available for inspection at the show.

4.) For an animal to be exhibited as junior-owned, in all classes, the recorded ownership must show the animal to be owned solely by the junior or a partnership comprised of Brown Swiss Association Junior Members or leased

by June 1st through the National Brown Swiss Association Youth Lease program by the Junior. (Adult-Junior partnerships, family partnerships, and farm ownerships are not acceptable.) All transfers and recorded ownerships must be dated by August 1st of the current show year for all classes. If in joint ownership, one of the owners must be declared the exhibitor during check-in. Awards will be presented as one unit, to all owners equally.

Animals that are leased through the National Brown Swiss Association Lease Program are also eligible to be shown as junior-owned. The leased animal’s recorded owner will receive Open show awards.

5.) Juniors must be 8 -21 years of age as of January 1 of the current show year.

Submit by National Deadline: December 1 1 Professional Color 5X7 photo.

ENTRIES A professional, unretouched 5X7 color photo taken of the animal during the calendar year must be provided. Photo (minimum resolution 300 PPI) and entry may be sent electronically to ljohnson@brownswissusa.com. If photo is sent electronically, a completed entry form/sticker for that animal must be sent to the national office Information on the entry form for the back of the picture should include: The animal’s name, registration number, and birthdate, class entered, up to three Junior Show placings at Junior Shows ONLY where animal is shown by the junior as described under Eligibility, and the name and address of the junior. Labels are available from your state secretary, youth chairman, Association web page, or the national office and should be completed and affixed to the back of the picture. No other information other than what is asked for on the label should be included on the back of the picture. If photo is sent by email, the information listed above must accompany the photo in the email.

RESPONSIBILITIES For State Bell Ringer contests, each state association should establish a deadline for entries. State entries should be sent to an officer or committee chairman of the state association.

The state association is responsible for appointing a special committee to select the State Bell Ringer and Reserve State Bell Ringer in each class as soon as possible after the shows are completed and the pictures are available. A state officer or committee member is responsible for seeing that the State and Reserve Bell Ringer selections, properly identified and with the aforementioned label affixed to the back of the pictures, are sent to the National Office by December 1.

It is not necessary to participate in or win a state contest to participate in the national contest; however, for those that do win at the state level and are interested in competing in the national contest, both State and Reserve pictures can be sent; remember the picture along with the entry label is the entry. State Bell Ringer certificates will only be furnished for those animals for which an entry (i.e., picture) was sent to the National Office and which met all qualification requirements. Juniors living in states that do not hold state contests should send their entries directly to the national office.

JUDGING AND AWARDS The State Bell Ringers and the Reserve State Bell Ringers will be recognized in the January issue of the Brown Swiss Bulletin. Each state is responsible for contacting the Bulletin staff if they want their state winners published.

Owners of the State and Reserve Bell Ringers will be awarded certificates by the corresponding State Brown Swiss Association.

The National Bell Ringer and a Reserve winner will be selected in each class. An Honorable Mention can be awarded in a class at the judge’s discretion. Winners will be chosen by a committee of three judges from the National Approved Judges List.

Entries will be judged on pictures and Junior Show placings. The National Bell Ringer selections will receive a plaque and be published in the March issue of the Brown Swiss Bulletin.

You are only going to get out what you put in.

There is an immense opportunity for Brown Swiss to make great progress and take more advantage of the genomic tools available.

With more genomic testing of males and females, the reliability of the genomic predictions will increase. Data collected on production testing, classification, and genomic testing are the tools that will be used going forward. Working together to furnish this data will ensure Brown Swiss a viable and competitive position in today’s dairy industry.

This is part of a discussion we had with João Dürr, Chief Executive Officer, Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding:

National Membership required for All American contest.

Those of you that are interested in the 2021 All American program take note of a few changes for this year.

To participate in the All-American Program, all owners of the animal to be entered must be either Junior or Adult Members of the National Brown Swiss Association. All photos must be sent electronically, not hard copy, and entries must be e-mailed or postmarked on or before November 15.

What can CDCB do to help the breed to retain competitiveness?

“The main contribution is to maintain a reliable evaluation system.

This depends on the quality and quantity of data available as well as the methods applied. Having more herds that do not participate in milk recording or other types of phenotypic data collection, such as health records and type classification programs, jeopardizes the quality of the reference population that is needed to produce reliable genomic predictions. Breeders that benefit from the evaluations without contributing data into the system are only interested in their own business goals and not in the growth of the breed as a whole.

CDCB tries to compensate for the lack of national data by facilitating international exchanges of genotypes and phenotypes through InterBull, which puts Brown Swiss in a position of advantage when compared with other small breeds for instance.”

Normal work will be a minimum of 3 weeks to process and mail back from when we receive it in the office. Part of the 3 weeks includes some time for your paperwork to get to you through the mail. Rush turnaround time is one-week provided USPS deliveries are not delayed. If you need a faster turnaround, you will need to request a Rush within 72 hours. We cannot guarantee when you will receive work once mailed due to USPS delivery.

The year has gotten very busy with all the fall activities. Don’t forget to catch-up on your registrations. Do them young and save money. BSA herds, those heifer calves born in May will be turning 6 months old November 1st.

BROWN SWISS 2021 Brown Swiss ALL-AMERICAN All American Program Program Rules Rules The All American Program recognizes the outstanding animals exhibited at state and national shows during the current calendar year.

Classes for the contest include Spring Heifer Calves, Winter Heifer Calves, Fall Heifer Calves, Summer Yearling Heifers, Spring Yearling Heifers, Winter Yearling Heifers, Fall Yearling Heifers, Yearling in Milk, Junior Two Year Olds, Senior Two Year Olds, Junior Three Year Olds, Senior Three Year Olds, Four Year Olds, Five Year Olds, Aged Cows and Component Merit.

Group classes included in the program are Junior Best Three Females, Best Three Females, and Produce of Dam. ELIGIBILITY To participate in the All American Program, all owners of the animal must be either Junior or Adult Members of the national Brown Swiss Association.

To be eligible for entry in the All American contest, the animals must meet the following qualifications.

Place 1st through 6th place at a National Show or place 1st or 2nd at any other U.S. shows designated as qualifying shows by the National Show Committee and Board of Directors. (Qualifying Shows listed on this page following the rules.)

PICTURES It shall be the responsibility of the exhibitor to secure and supply one electronic professional color photo of each animal being entered in the All American Contest along with the entry blank. NOTE: The photos must be electronic 5 x 7 color files with a minimum resolution of 300 PPI. The current PDCA show ring code of ethics rules pertaining to grooming and preparation must be followed.

Pictures must be made during the current year and show the animals in the same stage of growth and/or lactation as when she qualified in the show ring.

For competition in the group classes, an individual picture of each animal in the group must be submitted. The pictures must be of the animals which are shown when the group qualified for entry. If substitutions are made in a group from one show to the next, different entries must be made for each qualifying combination. Partnership bred animals, outside the family, cannot be used in the Best Three Females classes.

ENTRIES Entries must use an official entry blank with all requested information completed, including listing all placings at qualifying shows during the current year (Include udder placings.), one electionic professional color picture for each class entry, and a $50 fee per entry. (An application is available on the Brown Swiss Association website., and will be published in the September and October issues of the Brown Swiss Bulletin.)

All photos and entries must be e-mailed or post-marked on or before November 15.

NOMINATIONS Information on all entry blanks is checked at the National Office for accuracy. Each entry along with a photo is sent to the Nominating Committee. Each judge will nominate entries in each class and forward his ballot to the national office. Ballots will be tallied and nominated animals determined.

Breeders with nominated animals will be notified and invoiced $150 for each nominated entry which must be paid in order for the animal to continue in the contest.

JUDGING & PUBLICATION The judges include all those who are on the Brown Swiss Association Approved Judges List and who served as judge at any of the qualifying shows. The judges will receive a judging packet containing a ballot, the entries, and the animals’ photos.

Judges with any interest, either monetary or relational to entries and/or nominees should refrain from voting in those classes.

The ballots will be tallied and total points published in the Bulletin. Nominations and winners, when published in the Bulletin, will include pictures accompanied by the names of animals, breeders, owners, as well as placings and production information.

All winning entries have the option of receiving an All American photo plaque for an additional $40 fee.

If entry rules are not followed by entrant, the animal or group entered can be disqualified.

Tea Rose was named the winning Component Merit Cow, as well as earning the designations of Best Udder and Best Bred and Owned, as well as being the top junior-owned entry, exhibited by Matthew Thompson. She also took home the banners for Senior and Grand Champion of the Junior Show, and received the high-five making her the Honorable Mention Senior Champion in the open show.

and other great cows such as Tango, Margo and Paisley,” said Rick “RT” Thompson, who led the fourth place cow in the class, Random Luck L Talula.

Tea Rose and her herdmates call Random Luck Farm home. There the Thompsons milk 52 head of registered Brown Swiss and Jerseys, with a smattering of Holsteins thrown in.

“We are very blessed to have a cow like Tea Rose,” said Rick of one of the undeniable barn-favorites at Random Luck. “She has enabled both of my kids to experience success in the showring. I tried to explain to Matthew that, much like growing up a Cubs and Bears fan, this might be a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment, so he should enjoy it.”

Early in her showring career, Tea Rose was often escorted by Allison Thompson; while lately her brother Matthew has taken over that job, including leading her to her long-awaited rise to the top of a World Dairy Expo class.

“It was a great feeling,” Matthew said, recalling the high-five he received from associate judge Phillip Topp, as Tea Rose was chosen to be the Grand Champion of the Junior Show. “She has always done well at Expo, but has never won her class. She is a great cow and she deserves it.”

Not a new name to Brown Swiss enthusiasts, Tea Rose is ten years old and in her seventh lactation, having calved just before Christmas last year. Before stepping on the purple shavings, she had spent the 2021 show season adding a few more banners to her already impressive collection, being selected as the Grand Champion Brown Swiss and the eventual Reserve Supreme Champion of both the Wisconsin State Fair and the Youth Classic Dairy Show. She was honored as the 2020 Wisconsin Cow of the Year.

A perennial anchor of the Random Luck showstring, Tea Rose has been nominated All-American six times and has been Reserve AllAmerican three times. Prior to winning her class this year, Tea Rose has been second in her class three times. She has been the Supreme Champion of the Wisconsin State Fair twice, and has been Reserve and Honorable Mention a couple other times, including being Reserve Supreme this year. She is a second-generation Wisconsin State Fair Grand Champion.

A daughter of Mort Legacy Bonanza, Tea Rose hails from the heart of one of the Random Luck foundation cow families, being a granddaughter of Sun-Made Jetway Taps 2E-92. Her mother is Random Luck Premium Twinkle EX-92, and Tea Rose completes six generations of Excellent cows.

According to Matthew, one of the things that makes Tea Rose such a special individual is her personality.

As a breeder, Rick says that Tea Rose exemplifies what he is striving to create, with extreme dairy strength matched with great Brown Swiss breed character.

“Tea Rose is just a great cow to work with. She is pretty mellow and never freaks out about anything,” Matthew said. “She is so easy to work with and she always does pretty well, that makes it a lot of fun to show her.”

“Tea Rose is one of those cows that makes you want to get out of bed and head to the barn every day: she is easy to work with and pretty easy to look at as well,” Rick said. “She is pretty special; she is ten years old and she still continues to get better with each calving.”

PREMIER OF THE ALL AMERICAN BROWN SWISS FUTURITY By: Cindy Warner

Harrisburg, PA. — The “New and Improved” 2–year–old Futurity was held at the 2021 All American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA. This new format and “roll-out” for the Brown Swiss Futurity starts a new chapter for Brown Swiss breeders at the All American Dairy Show.

It started out with a bang as the Winning entry was Buschs Famous Jenna, an outstanding Sr. 2-year old, who went on to win the Intermediate Champion of the show. She is owned by Peter Vail, FL. Judge Brian Schnebly commented on her outstanding mammary and such a stylish tall and long young cow with a bright future—a handy winner of the First All American Futurity.

The winning Jr. was Austin Heilinger, PA. with the entry of Heilinger Silver War, also a Sr. 2-year-old., and placed third in the Futurity Class.

The “new” Futurity will be focused on the promotion of the Brown Swiss breed, and all states and exhibitors are welcome to enter and participate in this “Jackpot” payout with Winner takes all in the Open show – and that goes for the Jr. Division of the class too. This 16

new approach is to stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Brown Swiss! It will recognize the accomplishments of the small and the large breeder, as well as the Juniors. It was decided to showcase this event at the prestigious All American Dairy Show which has entries from so many states, and is considered one of the elite National shows of the year. This year’s Judge for the “first” Futurity was Brian Schnebly, Hagerstown, MD. The Futurity is exhibitor friendly with a “one-time” payment of $30.00 which will be due July 1 on the year of the show.

We invite and encourage all eligible entries to enter for the following years. Calves born 9/1/2019—8/31/20 are eligible for the 2022 futurity. The class consists of Jr. and Sr. 2-year-olds, and to clarify— the futurity animas are eligible to enter their respective classes in the show.

Ambassador’s Message: Hello everyone, Madelyn and Awna again. By the time you receive this we should all be recovering from the World Dairy Expo and the All American Show! We would like to remind you all that we have some amazing contests and activities going on right now! We are also extending our deadlines for some of these contests!

We would like to highlight one of our outstanding national youth members! Youth spotlight.

I did not have the opportunity to grow up on a farm; however, through the 4-H lease program, I have had the chance to still be able to experience life on the farm.

Matt and Steve Klug, from the Cozy Valley Farm, have graciously allowed me to lease their cows and let me be a part of their dairy operation for the past twelve years. They have taken me under their wings and have taught me all about dairy farming, the Brown Swiss breed, showing, as well as the dairy industry.

Having such influential mentors has helped me grow my passion for the Brown Swiss breed and the industry.

Through my involvement in the Brown Swiss breed, I have been able to join the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association, as well as, the National Brown Swiss Association. I have had many opportunities through these Associations like being a Junior and Senior Brown Swiss Ambassador, as well as, running for National Brown Swiss Ambassador.

I am very active in the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association. Every summer, I attend our Minnesota State Picnic and Canton meeting. I have also attended the Minnesota and Iowa National Brown Swiss Conventions. In my County, I have attended and planned dairy workshops and attended our annual Dairy Banquet.

I have also taken part in the Minnesota Youth All-Breeds Convention, the National Holstein Convention in Bellevue, Washington, and the National 4-H Dairy Conference in 2017. I believe that it is very important to continuously expand my knowledge of the dairy industry and to meet new friends from all over the United States because those are the people that I am going to be working with in the future.

My favorite hobby is showing cows. Every year I look forward to spring because I love being able to finally pick out new show cows and get them ready to show all summer long. It requires countless hours of work, but it is something that I will never get tired of. I love going to shows to showcase all of the hard work that I have put into getting my cows to look their best. I also get to see many of my dairy friends that I’m not able to see during the school year. Dairy is my passion and I have a hunger for knowledge to learn more about the industry.

When I’m not showing cows, some of my hobbies are baking, cooking, decorating cakes, and doing crafts with my mom. For the past three years, I have been making crafts to sell at my town’s holiday craft fair show in December. It is something I look forward to every year because I get to bond with my mom over crafts and spend time with her. Some of my interests include 4-H and FFA. I have enjoyed countless activities and leadership positions in 4-H and FFA. It is such a great feeling to share and spread my passion for 4-H and FFA with others. I have met so many great

friends through these organizations and learned how to be a strong leader in my school, community, and county.

After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I would like to attend graduate school studying dairy cattle genetics to achieve my dream job as a dairy cattle geneticist. Genetics has always been extremely interesting to me, and I would love to have a career-focused on them. I would like to have my own dairy herd with registered Brown Swiss in the future. I grew up showing Brown Swiss, and I currently own a small herd of Brown Swiss. I have enjoyed all aspects of raising my cattle, and I want to continue to do so. I plan to keep developing my herd’s genetics and exhibiting cattle at shows.

I started leasing and showing Brown Swiss cows from the Klug family at the Cozy Valley Farm when I was nine years old. I fell in love with cows as well as the dairy industry and have continued showing ever since. My love for dairy has led me to own seven Brown Swiss with my brother, where we raise them to show. My mentors Matt and Myriah Klug were the ones that first introduced me to the dairy industry. I worked on their dairy farm for six summers learning about the daily care of cows and so much more. It was my time spent working for the Klug family that first sparked my interest in dairy cattle genetics and mating cows.

Outside of showing, I have had the opportunity to attend many conventions and conferences to learn more about different aspects of the dairy industry, network with dairy industry professionals, and meet some of my best friends that share the same passion for the dairy industry. In 4-H, I helped plan dairy workshops for 4-H youth and mentored new dairy project members. I like to stay involved in my county’s dairy project by encouraging youth to join 4-H dairy quiz bowl, tutoring younger members in dairy judging, and participating in dairy workshops to help kids with their dairy projects. Expanding my knowledge about various areas of the dairy industry has always been a priority to me. The industry is always evolving and staying in the know is important to staying relevant in the dairy industry. Networking in the dairy industry is very important because those are the people you will be working with in the future and could potentially be your employer. Sharing my knowledge and experiences with other youth is another thing that I love to do because we can all learn so much from one another.

In the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association, I have served as a Minnesota Brown Swiss Junior Ambassador for two years and a Senior Ambassador for one year. As an ambassador, I handed out ribbons and spoke at Canton shows, the Minnesota State Fair, and the National Brown Swiss Junior Show when it was held in Minnesota. I also helped plan Brown Swiss youth events, talked with farmers about considering adding Brown Swiss to their herd, invited youth dairy project members to the Minnesota Fall Brown Swiss State sale to purchase a project calf, and attended farm tours hosted by a dairy farm for foreign dairy farmers to advocate for the Brown Swiss breed. I also continue advocating for the Brown Swiss breed, because I am so passionate about the breed and want to encourage others to consider adding them to their herds to gain the positive attributes of the breed.

Michael Brandon Moyers, 38, Bridgeport, Texas, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, in Decatur.

Grace M. Kietzman, age 84, died Friday, September 17, 2021, at Alden Meadow Park in Clinton, WI.

Brandon was born on November 17, 1982, to Michael Moyers and Chryl Wood in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was self-employed and worked in the Oil and Gas Industry for many years as a lease broker in Wise County. Brandon was a loving husband, father, son, grandson, brother, uncle, and good friend to many who will be missed dearly by those that knew and loved him. Brandon loved spending time with his friends and family and especially cherished his children, Cooper and Mackenzie.

She was born May 13, 1937 to the late John and Gertrude (Derwent) Wolter in Clinton, WI.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Ashley Denman Moyers of Bridgeport; his children, Cooper and Mackenzie; his father, Mike Moyers and wife Debbie of Bridgeport; his mother, Chryl Stevens of Ft. Worth; his brothers, Maclain Jobe and wife Heather of Bridgeport and Jarred Jobe and wife Cheryl of Las Colinas; his sisters, Amber Pierce of Louisiana and Amber Copeland of Ft. Worth; his grandfather Steven Gunta of Irving; his grandmother, Delores Wood of North Richland Hills; several nieces and nephews; numerous extended family members and many good friends that were like family.

Grace married Robert E. Kietzman on December 16, 1961. Together they operated Kies Haven Farm, raising Brown Swiss cattle and flowers.

Grace liked to socialize and was a member of Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church, the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association, and the Rock/Walworth Bowling league. She loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren and their many activities.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Kietzman; her two sons, David (Kim) Kietzman and Joel (Missy) Kietzman; her five grandchildren, Samantha, Garrett, Hannah, Rachael and Ava and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant sister, Betty Jean; her sister, Joan; and her brother, John.
