Welcome to our 2018 Bull Sale.

Last year was a long, cold winter. We ended up feeding the cows more than we normally need for them to produce their calf. That being said, we did not assist any mature cows with birth last year!

This year we have put more emphasis on the cow information in the book. The information is the same as years past. However, this is one of the tools we have found to be the most dependable for all aspects of our operation. On older cows the ratios are even more accurate.

We are always pushing the cattle to preform better in a feedlot setting since that is the end goal for everyone in this business. I would like to share with you our numbers from 2016 born calves. As a group of 140 ranch raised calves, they went 75% choice. In years past we have said that if the bulls are bred to Angus cows that will improve their choice percentage. We can say that these calves are out of purebred Simmentals and they are reaching those choice premiums.

The Simmental breed has always done well in the ribeye size. However, this year even I was surprised to find we had three steers with 21 inch ribeyes, yield grade 1s and they graded choice. Can you imagine a 21 inch ribeye on your plate? Most of our customers know that carcass and feedlot data is a large part of our program. We feel this is one of the best ways to tell the quality of bulls you are purchasing but this is not the only trait we concentrate on.

Calving ease and weaning are the traits that most directly impact you and they are the starting point for our own selection. We would also like to thank the producers that sell their feeder calves to us. This is where we can really tell if the bulls are doing their job and add a lot of good information to our database.

This years bull feed is the same as last, with a ration of chopped hay, alfalfa haylage and Amino Max. We wish you the best of luck in the coming calving season and hope to see you February 27th at the sale!

NOTES: We color coded the bulls for where their EPDs rank against breed averages. We hope this helps anyone unfamiliar with EPDs to find bulls with the traits they want. The 1/2 blood bulls are ranked on the hybrid % table. Top 1% Please note that the Red Angus bulls should not Top 5% be compared to the other percentage bulls since Top 20% they are a different breed composition.

BLACK & POLLED TESTS - We have tested a select number of bulls for polled and black. These are noted in the comments if the bulls are homozygous or heterozygous.

SALE PROCEDURE: The cattle will sell by video on sale day.

Indoor bull viewing is available from 10:00 am until the end of the sale. We will not be running the bulls through the sale ring, instead the sale will be on video in the shop. The sale will be a full auction and sale order will be available sale day and on the website. (If you do not find the sale order on the website please call and we will send you a copy.) $100 off each bull you buy and take home that day. We offer free delivery in Montana and any one out of MT will only pay up to $300 transportation. Free boarding until the bulls are delivered.

Hill’s Buy-back Program

We would like the opportunity to bid on progeny of the bulls we market by offering a buy-back program! For the past 13 years, Hill’s Ranch has been buying calves and feeding these cattle. Last year we fed over 1200 head of feeder cattle sired

by Hill’s Ranch bulls. We have enjoyed great success with this system and would like to include more cattle.

This is a remarkable opportunity not only for seed stock breeders but for commercial owners as well. We are offering this program to producers that use Hill’s Ranch bulls.

PB SIM - Homozygous Black & Polled This bull was bought as a half brother to War Cloud and he has done a nice job on these cows. He has a lower birth weight but still capable of good wean weights. As you look at his actual data for carcass, pay attention to the yield grade. While these ten feedlot calves didn’t grade choice as high as the other calves, they did yield at the top of the herd.

How to read our bull catalog.

ACTUAL CARCASS DATA

This is actual carcass data from calves the herd bulls have in the feedlot. This year’s data is from Number of Yield Grad Ribeye % Choice HCW calves born in 2016.

Calves: A B C D A: Yield grades at 1s or 2s make money and 3s are OK. 4s and 5s will cost you.

B: A ribeye at 12-14 inch is what you want.

C: Choice is considered high when the number of calves gets over 70%.

D: Hot Carcass weight. Too low is 550 and too high is 1050.

EPDs

The EPDs we choose to put in the book are largely based on the accuracy of the EPD. If you are looking for a EPD not listed in the lot bull’s table, check the herd sire’s.

The number below is the accuracy for a much older bull and it is not real high. We feel for these yearling bulls there is not much point tracking an EPD that is not very accurate.

We also don’t track CW and BF. Carcass weight is mainly environment and neither trait has been a problem in our actual carcass data and back fat is really not a worry in Simmental cattle.

The Dam Info is most accurate for BW & WW ratios. Remember a high BWR means a lower birth weight. Also a dam with a N/A for her calf interval she has been accidentally dropped from the Simmental Association then put back in. Does anyone else have cows that disappear then reappear the next year?

EPD TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS Calving Ease (CE): The average difference of unassisted births when used on heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pounds of birth weight. Used primarily as an indicator of calving ease.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pound at weaning. Does not account for variance in WW that are due to milk.

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s progeny. Expressed in pounds at one year of age.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): The average ease of a bull’s first-calving daughters compared to daughters of a different sire.

Milk (MILK): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned and reflect the avg. difference due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned. Account for avg. differences from both WW direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.

CARCASS EPDs Carcass Weight (CW): Estimate average differences in carcass weight at a given age endpoint.

Yield Grade (YG): In an effort to apply the same scale the industry uses in quantifying meat yield Percent Retail Cuts EPD is now expressed as an YG EPD. As with all EPDs, YG EPD is expressed as a deviation. Unlike its predecessor, however, negative values are desirable. To use it, keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are a 1/3 of a yield grade better (lower) than a 0.0 YG EPD bull. If bulls with a zero EPD for Yield Grade sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower).

Marbling (MARB): The average difference in USDA Quality Grade in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. A numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score.

Ribeye Area (RIB): The average difference in ribeye area in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint.

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth in compared to another.

Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values for purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed compositions or purebreds with hybrids - our system (ASA system) was not developed to make valid comparisons among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate to your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.
