Welcome to our 45th Annual Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Sale.

We would like to thank all our past customers for your continued support and confidence in our program over the years. Your friendship has meant the world to us. We are looking forward to being your continued source for performance driven, maternally backed, commercially focused Gelbvieh and Balancer Genetics.

We believe that Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics produce the hardest working female in the beef industry. Our focus is on building the optimal female that can thrive in any environment. We place maximum emphasis on maternal traits including udder quality, fertility, fleshing ability, and longevity. Our cattle run in large pasture where they are required to climb steep elevations and travel long distances for water. Structurally sound, easy doing cattle are a must. The sires we utilize within our cow herd are selected to produce high performing, fertile, easy fleshing cattle that are problem free and profitable. Our goal is to take the guess work out of the equation for our customers.

This year’s sale offering has exceeded the goals we have set for our program. They are uniform in the makeup regardless of breed percentage. They are thick, long spined, easy fleshing, and exceptional on their feet and legs. This group of bulls were weaned in early September, took to the bunk quickly, and have been the best gaining set we have had to date despite the extreme changes in weather patterns throughout the fall. Disposition is a high priority for us and is a hard line keep/cull factor within our program. This set of bulls is very quiet and handle with ease. They are being developed on a high fiber, roughage based ration and are given plenty of space to exercise. Our natural calves are developed on rugged pastures without supplementation and came home with excellent weaning weights.

Our embryo transfer program continues to be a significant focus, allowing us to expedite the most productive genetics within our herd and continue to utilize some of our strongest cow families throughout our program’s history.

You will find several groups of impressive flushmate brothers in this sale line up. Their female siblings are equally impressive in our replacement pen. Our embryo calves are handled with the best care from calving to weaning by Brett Stevens and we are thankful to work with a cooperator that places such a high level of care in place with his herd.

At weaning the ET calves are brought to the ranch, integrated with the natural calves, and then all managed together.

Breeding Guarantee: The breeding period is defined as 90 days following the first turn out of a bull. Beastrom Ranch guarantees purchases selling for $3,500 or more at a value of 100% credit less $1,800 (considered the salvage value of the bull) toward the purchase of one bull in the following year’s bull sale. If the new purchase costs less than the credit amount, no further credit is due. One purchase credit cannot be used on multiple bulls (1 for 1 only). In the event of death or injury, please contact us as soon as possible.

If a replacement bull is needed to help you through the breeding season, we will provide one if one is available.

Insurance: To reduce your risk and protect your

investment, it is recommended that you purchase livestock mortality insurance on your purchases.

Information will be available on sale day.

Delivery: We will keep the bulls free of charge until April

15, 2025. Arrangements can be made to feed the bulls until June 1, 2025 at a rate of $3.50 per day. If you choose to have us care for your purchase, you will be doing so at your own risk and pick up/delivery will be the purchasers responsibility. All bulls will be delivered with a proper breeding soundness exam. Delivery in South Dakota will be free of charge and arrangements can be made for delivery anywhere in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

EPD Definitions: Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published.

Maternal traits Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers.

A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

Scrotal circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring.

Growth traits Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Carcass traits Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product.

Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Efficiency traits Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. Indexes Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time.

Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. FPI™ which stands for feeder profit index: An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

He is built to cover large pastures with a stout skeletal structure and big foot. This bull has been one we studied closely throughout the year and he has not disappointed us yet. His dam and grand dam are females we selected from Jim’s Dispersal. The 3147A female offers added cow power with her 10 calves offering an average WW of 730 lbs. 2101J is following in her footsteps raising front pasture kind and maintaining a solid calving interval.

We had the opportunity to see Big Energy as a coming two year old. One of the most impressive things about him, besides the disposition, was the length of spine and his ability to travel with ease. 4538M is a higher percentage Balancer bull with added calving ease and a light birth weight. 421M is a well made Balancer bull out of an AI sire we collected years ago that is an outcross pedigree to most of the genetics we utilize today. BEA 509C is a maternal brother to Lot 8, both out of DLW 321A, a female that has left an impression on many herds across the country. 421A is an attractive made bull that is well balanced and easy fleshing.

431M is the result of an embryo mating that combines some of our favorite genetics from the past.
