Welcome to the 24th Annual Musgrave Angus “Pick ’em In Pike” Sale. We would like to thank all of our past customers and welcome anyone who is considering us as a seedstock supplier.

Raising Angus cattle isn’t a lifestyle, but rather a business allowing someone to live a life they are passionate about. We thrive to raise quality, sound, no-nonsense breeding stock with a common-sense approach. Our family has been blessed to have sold seedstock, semen, and embryos worldwide, but hard-working bulls and females for commercial beef production is the mainstay for our operation.

H Breeding Guarantee

We guarantee that all bulls selling are fertile to the best our knowledge. They have been semen evaluated and are deemed as being sound breeders. All bulls selling for more than $3,000 qualify. If your bull is found to be infertile during the first breeding season, which is approximately 90 days following the sale, then we will provide a replacement of equal quality if available. If a replacement is not available then we issue a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus a salvage value of $1,800. We make every effort that you are pleased. Unless agreed upon previously, all females selling have calves or have been preg checked prior to the sale and sell with no further guarantee. All claims need to be made before September 1, 2019.

We’re a 400 head cow/calf seedstock operation. We are predominantly Simmental based, with approximately 1/3 of the herd being Angus. We started using Musgrave bulls to cross on our Simmis and breed for PB Angus replacements. We like them because we were able to cross them on our Simmental cattle, giving them a shot of calving ease without sacrificing any power and performance the Simmental breed is known for. The bulls we purchased and used in our AI program have produced thick, sound, good footed, heavy milking, functional cattle that we feel would fit in anyone’s program. As we started to feed these cattle, we also realized they will thrive in all facets of the commercial beef industry.

There is no greater testament to a breeding program than incorporating their own genetics back in the herd. Our cow herd was built from the ground up, using the best sires produced in our herd. This has allowed for greater consistency, better quality, and more predictability in each calf crop. Raising cattle in the Midwest has proven to be challenging. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Our take on genomics testing....

Most of our sale offering has been genomically tested through the American Angus Association using either AngusGS or the Pfizer HD50K. This DNA test analyzes the genetic markers and compares them to over 500,000 animals in the Angus database. In the beginning, we had our doubts about this technology but, after testing the majority of our herd we noticed genetics patterns in certain lines of cattle that couldn’t be ignored. DNA testing has real world value and used correctly offers information that can move you in the right direction.

All of the bulls in this offering have been DNA tested. Each bull will display a symbol for DNA testing on their pedigree.

Those animals’ EPDs are GE-EPDs, meaning they have a genomic test performed on a DNA sample from that animal, which provided additional information used in the calculation of their EPDs. Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are important because they make use of the results from the DNA test in addition to all other sources of information to provide added ACCURACY and RELIABILITY to that animal’ s EPDs. Depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8-33 calves.

The Top Dollar Angus symbol labels bulls that qualify for the Top Dollar program. They qualify based on genomic testing results that rank them in the top end of the database for carcass merit. More information on Top Dollar Angus can be found on their website.
