In the last 30 years, we’ve witnessed many changes in the cattle business! From the type and color of cattle to how we sell them! We used to haul everything to a sale barn and for the past 12 years we have had the sale at our own ranch. We now sell them on tv screens and online! We have also seen a huge change in the prices! Since the last couple years, cattle producers are getting paid what these cattle are worth! Change can be hard at times, but that one is easy to accept! We are excited for the 2026 sale! We love reconnecting with our customers. The people in the beef industry are truly the best. As always, you are welcome to come and tour the bulls and females prior to the sale! Just let us know you are coming so we make sure we are here. This year we’ve added some new things! We decided to leave the bulls out one more cycle and anything that was bred at that time is in the sale. There are 15 May/ June calving cows added to the sale this year and a few May/June calving heifers from our replacement pen! We also have 25 head of red commercial replacement heifers consigned by a customer from Dickinson! We look forward to providing more of these opportunities to our buyers in the future!
Our goal is to produce functional cattle that will make our customers money. We focus on performance, but we also breed for balance and we understand that we are still producing a food product. Carcass value is also important. You’ll notice our offering this year is heavy on performance cattle and we only have a select few calving ease options.
We stand behind our cattle 100%. Please let us know if you have problems where we can assist. Disposition, feet, and breeding soundness are all guaranteed.
Please join us on sale day, February 14, at our ranch at Leeds, ND! If you can’t make it on sale day, consider stopping out ahead of time and getting your name in the drawing for the $500 sale credit! You can also always contact us and we will go through the bulls with you over the phone ahead of time. On sale day, online bidding is available or we can arrange for someone to be on the phone. We are always happy to assist you in finding what you need!

Understanding the Data
CUSTOMER SERVICE BENEFITS
Bulls are fed for free and delivered to your doorstep or as close as possible. They will be semen tested and delivered once they have passed.
All animals in the sale are 100% guaranteed for docility, feet quality, breeding soundness and pregnancy in the females. Contact us if you have any issues.
All animals in the sale that were born at Kenner’s are parent verified to both the sire and the dam and have genomic EPDs. Any cows in the sale that we purchased are parent verified to the sire or have DNA on file and are still genomically enhanced.
DNA AND GENETIC TRAITS
DNA TESTING AND GENOMIC EPDS
There are several genomic tests available. The GGP 100K test qualifies the animals for AI sires and donor cows and tests for parentage. The results are incorporated in to the EPDs through the single-step system (BOLT) and increases the accuracy for each trait.
All the bulls and heifers in the offering have been GGP 100K tested and the resulting EPDs are in the catalog. They’ve also been tested for any genetic traits or defects that were needed. All bulls are already qualified as an AI sire and all the bred heifers already qualify as donor females.
DILUTION GENE (DL)
All the red animals in this sale are non-diluted (DLF). DLF means they are free of the dilution gene. Grey calves will not result from any of these animals when bred to black animals.
OH GENETIC TRAIT
OH or Oculocutaneous Hypopigmentation is a cosmetic genetic trait affecting Simmental cattle. It is a recessive trait so it is only possible from the mating of two carriers. It is non-lethal and doesn’t affect performance of the animal, but the animals will have “white-colored” eyes and/or a diluted hair coat. The most popular recent ancestor that is the carrier is PVF-BF BF26 Black Joker. We have tested everything in our herd that could possibly be a carrier and have identified the ones in this sale who are carriers (OHC).
OHC means that animal carries the gene. If mated with other carriers, there is a possibility to see the trait. If not mated to carriers, you will not see the trait, but may pass the carrier gene to some of the progeny.

The bulls were fed a TMR ration formulated by Tim Clark of Hubbard Feeds. Our ration is formulated on a moderate level of energy that’s appropriate for the genetic type and the northern environment in order to develop bulls for breeding. We worked the bulls up to a 48 Mcal ration and kept them at that level during the test period. Our trace mineral program is designed to improve structural integrity, foot quality and immune function. They are on a high-end supplement program. Our average ADG for the 2026 sale bulls was 3.3 lbs on a 95-day test.
BVD AND JOHNE’S STATUS
All animals in the herd tested negative for BVD. We follow the state’s guidelines for Johne’s Testing and have maintained our Johne’s Status.

3/4 SIMANGUS / HOMOZYGOUS BLACK / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED
Jolie is a daughter of our Wandy donor who is a Kayla daughter combining 3 generations of donor cows. She has a beautiful udder, super disposition and great feet. Her first two natural bull calves sold in the sale and she has a Diligence heifer calf from this year besides the flush to Diligence. The flush to Diligence is impressive. All three full brothers in the sale are stout, structurally correct, quiet, and flat out impressive. Flush brothers sell as Lots 1 – 3.
This is our second calf crop by Diligence. He was an outcross pedigree to most of our herd. We have been very impressed with the thickness and muscle shape of his calves. His calves are always the first ones you notice in the pasture or in the pen. He adds performance, while maintaining moderate birth weights. Dispositions have been very good! There are 7 sons selling in our sale – Lots 1 – 7 and 2 daughters in the bred heifer sections – Lots 144 & 145. Lot 1

We purchased Resolution from TNT Simmentals in 2024 with this being his first calf crop. Resolution has an impressive phenotype along with a great foot and a super disposition. He’s a performance bull that did not cause calving issues and the calves grew well! They’ve got frame, thickness, large testicles and are structurally sound with great dispositions. We are excited to see how his females do in the future too! There are 12 sons of Resolution selling in our sale this year - Lots 8 – 19.

We purchased Big Ben from Crosshair Simmental Ranch, Dawson, ND, in 2024. He’s another Assurance son like TNT Resolution! He’s a very largeframed bull with a ton of extra length and is super docile. There are only 2 sons in the sale this year. They are structurally sound, super long and very docile like their sire. Two sons sell as Lots 36 – 37.
Photos Below: The Lot 36 bull found himself in a predicament in July when he fell into a hole under a very old, abandoned windmill. We were unaware there was an open hole there. When Erika was checking the pasture in her gator, his mother kept bellering at her. After realizing her calf was missing, Erika followed the cow across the pasture and found out the calf was 14 feet down in the windmill hole. Erika called for reinforcements and with a loader tractor and straps, he was lifted out of the hole unharmed. Our employee, Andre, was in the hole with the calf who was super cooperative and patient the entire time letting him tie the straps appropriately. The cow stood beside us all watching intently and was extremely happy when we got him out. Great cow behind Lot 36!

Congratulations to Bryan & Gay Leapaldt as Benson County’s Outstanding Agriculturalists at this year’s NDSU Harvest Bowl!
Bryan has been involved in farming and ranching for 45 years. After farming independently, he became the herdsman at Kenner Simmental Ranch in 1995, where he has worked for nearly 30 years. The operation uses rotational grazing and has integrated fresh water systems throughout most pastures. Bryan enjoys working closely with cattle year-round, especially during artificial insemination and embryo seasons. He serves on the Benson County Extension Advisory Board and has chaired the Leeds Community Center for two decades. His wife Gay operates a daycare and is active on several local boards, including the Leeds Ambulance District and the Community Center. Reprinted from NDSU Extension

UNDERSTANDING CALVING EASE, STAYABILITY & DOCILITY EPDS AND API & TI INDEXES
BY ERIKA KENNER
EPDs are important to utilize when selecting bulls for your herd. It is the fairest way to compare animals across herds as it averages sire groups within contemporary groups and removes the environmental component. Actual data will only compare the animals within the herd they are raised and that environment may be entirely different than yours. In order to use EPDs most effectively, we need to understand what they measure and what data is included.
The direct calving ease EPD (CED) measures the % of unassisted births when used on first calf heifers. American Simmental Association (ASA) recommends to use when selecting bulls for your heifers. CED EPD does not need to be as high when using on cows. I would even say it doesn’t need to be double digits when breeding cows. Don’t get me wrong, a live calf is always the goal, but there is a happy medium. We sell by the pound and still need these calves to grow. In northern ND, the small 60 lb calves struggle more to stay warm after birth than a heavier calf. Again, there is a happy medium. I’m not advocating for over 100-pound calves.
The Indexes are included with the EPDs, but instead measure profit and are a combination of many EPDs plus they include inputs and outputs for each trait. The first Index is API. API stands for All Purpose Index meaning all the traits relevant when retaining a portion of the females in your herd. American Simmental Association has a nice chart that shows what is used to calculate API.
Notice, the largest part is Stayability. Stayability EPD is the difference in probability of a sire’s daughters staying in the herd from after they calved as a 2-year-old until 6 years of age. Which means that anything culled from the herd prior to their first calf is not counted towards the EPD. If there are problems with a sire’s docility and most of the calves are wild, they are usually culled before breeding. Same thing with major feet and structure issues. There are bulls in the breed who have extremely high API and Stayability EPDs, yet have the lowest docility EPDs.
Many do not realize that the Docility EPD is not included in the indexes directly since there aren’t inputs associated with it. If cattle are culled for disposition after calving, then it’s included in the stayability portion, but docility is a trait where most will be culled prior to breeding. In my opinion, culling a sire group’s daughters for docility prior to breeding is an economic hit. That year of replacements is lost.
Calving ease EPD is a major part of API in the Calf Survival portion of the pyramid. Since the CED of cow bulls will not be as high, the API of cow bulls often is not as high. But we can’t just breed for calving ease bulls. We still need performance. Cows should be able to have 7% of their body weight in a calf. Which means a 1400 lb cow can have a 98 lb calf and a 1200 lb cow can have an 84 lb calf. Granted, calving issues can cause reproductive problems in the cows later, so I am not an advocate of the extreme high birth weights either. Balance is key.
Ranchers who are not retaining heifers from the herd and marketing the entire calf crop each year, need to pay more attention to the TI – Terminal Index. TI includes the EPDs and traits associated with growing calves to feed, finish and grade. This index also includes calf survival (CED) since we need live calves, but then it includes the growth traits and the carcass traits.
We strive for balanced EPDs. We feel using the top 1% API EPD bulls is not necessary to be profitable. If the EPDs are balanced and the API is above average, that means profit to us. Sometimes extremes can cause problems and there are levels in each EPD where too much is not the answer. Too much milk for example and too much calving ease. There should be a point where it negatively affects the animal when it is too high. Is the highest calving ease bull truly the most profitable. Live calves are important, but so are pounds at weaning, structure, function and docility.
We believe in EPDs and use them in our program. It is the only fair way to evaluate cattle across herds, but we need to understand how they are calculated. It is still important to evaluate the animals in the pen for feet and leg structure, udder quality of females, and dispositions.
Every ranch is different and has different needs and managements. Some need extra calving ease because of their situation and are willing to give up the extra pounds. Understanding what they measure and how they are calculated is important.

NON-DILUTED RED / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED
We purchased Bond at the Bichler Simmental Sale in 2023 and we share him with Bichler’s each year since they calve in May/June. These will be the first Bond calves to sell and Doug will have some in his sale this Fall. We used Bond on heifers and high-performance cows and he worked very well! The calves are dark, cherry red and have a moderate frame with thick tops and muscle shape. There are 9 sons in this sale as Lots 71 – 79.
KS MISS SHAMWOW Z829
NON-DILUTED RED / HOMOZYGOUS POLLED
Z829 has consistently put high-performance bulls in the sale. We culled her at 11 years of age, but we still had embryos in the tank! She usually adds frame and length in all her calves and it works well when combined with more of a calving ease sire, like Bond, as she has tons of performance. Her two sons sell as Lots 71 – 72 and 1 daughter in the bred heifer section –Lot 182.

This is the 3rd year we used him in our ET program and we also have calves by a son of his we raised this year – KS Hypnotic L657. He carries a very wellbalanced EPD profile and has added a lot of length and performance to his calves. The dispositions are excellent. Two sons sell as lots 98 – 99.
Elsie is a daughter of KS Penny X395 and ShamWow! We have a few of those daughters in our herd and they all rise to the top each year with their calves. Elsie has a good udder, a super disposition, and great feet and structure. She seems to click with every mating we throw at her! BRED COWS
We left the bulls out one more cycle this year and put anything bred during that time in the sale. These bred cows are calving in May/June and are excellent cows. You’ll see many young cows here who have a great life ahead of them. They just don’t fit in our calving window. Even though they are calving later, they still need to be picked up soon after the sale.

Corey Polensky, Rocky Butte Simmental, Dickinson, ND has been a customer of ours for many years. He always purchases great bulls. In fact, we’ve been using one he purchased in our AI program and we’re selling sons and daughters in this sale. His dad started buying Simmental bulls in 1981-82 and they’ve been Simmental ever since. Corey came back to the ranch after serving in the Army in 1994. He served in Desert Storm and in Somolia before returning to Dickinson.
He has been diligent when selecting bulls and replacement heifers on feet, udders, fleshing ability and docility. He has utilized artificial insemination since 1997 except for this year because he didn’t have enough help to get it done. The heifers offered in this group are right out of his own replacement pen. If he wouldn’t be selling them here, he would be keeping them. His steer calves have been sold to the same person since 2004. They are GAP (Global Animal Partnership) approved – all natural.
Corey is married to Linette and they have 3 children – Tristen, Seth and Taylor. They all help on the ranch.
The heifers will not be at the Kenner Sale Facility. They will stay at Polensky’s. The buyer will need to line up trucking after the sale. Corey is willing to work with the buyer on transportation costs and arrangements. Please call Corey for more information on the heifers, to see them ahead of time and for trucking arrangements.

Bull Buyer’s Quick Guide to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www. simmental.org. Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purposesire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.
Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at six years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a rib-eye steak.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit: www.simmental.org
Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.
