1 ▪ Kansas Angus News

The President's Pen Sale season is underway and our Angus bulls seem to be in great demand, as usual. This past fall, I saw record numbers of cows selling at our local sale barn, mainly due to drought and lack of winter feed supplies. While we remain extremely dry in our area, everything looks like we could see potential record prices for our product in the near future. In a few months, KAA will help celebrate 150 years of Angus on May 20 in Victoria, KS. We hope many can attend the celebration and field day. Finally, we all extend our prayers to the McCurry family. It’s very hard to lose an esteemed member of the KAA like Andy McCurry, and we only love and respect him more as his family expressed his desire for us to all spend some time helping someone else in his memory. That’s definitely a life well-lived! If there is anything I or any board member can help with, please let us know! Best wishes,

Notes & News from Anne Legacy What does the word legacy mean to you? Recently, the American Angus Association has been posting on their Facebook page photos and quotes from members sharing what Angus legacy means to them. The words- family, tradition, history, generations, foundation and future are used by many.

The dictionary defines legacy as- noun: something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past. Kansas Angus breeders have a unique legacy whether you are a first-generation Angus producer, or you are backed by generations. We can all share the legacy of having the same “home” as the first Angus in the United States as you progressively work toward your future. George Grant dreamed about and set out to make a legacy for the family and settlers he brought with him and for Angus cattle, the beef industry and Angus breeders 150 years ago. Grant’s dream became our legacy when he chose to bring those bulls from Scotland, crossed them with Longhorns which produced hornless black- hided calves that quickly made their mark on the beef industry from the plains of Kansas to the stockyards in Kansas City to the steakhouses of New York City and Chicago. Students of history know that all of Grant’s vision did not work out the way he planned as many of the colonists returned to their native Scotland or east within a few years due to the harsh conditions- illness, drought and prairie fires. Grant died just five years after he and those bulls arrived to make their home in Kansas. Those same students of history also know that the Angus industry has experienced prosperity and loss , failures and triumphs on its way to becoming the most prominent beef breed in the world. As we continue our quest to remain the seedstock and beef industry leader, I invite all of you to come to Victoria, Kansas on May 20 as we commemorate 150 years of Angus in the US and Kansas with a celebration and field day designed to continue the legacy. The event will have something for everyone. Please see pages 1 and 3 for more information and visit www.kansasangus.org to register for the event, sign up to display cattle or become a sponsor.
