ow! It is hard to believe how much activity has occurred since I last wrote a column…Tour planning group has met 3 times, plans are well underway, check out our ad promoting the tour on page 19 & the tour registration form on pg 29.. The State Jr. show and National Jr. show have come and gone, with outstanding participation on both levels. See the placings and awards our young members have earned with their hard work and participation, on pages 11-17.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I appreciate the hard work and effort Jake and Kami Scott and their South Dakota co-chairs Chris and Erica Styles put into organizing this year’s National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island. This was the first National Jr. Angus show I’ve had the privilege to attend. The coordination on all levels from sponsors, to volunteers, committee chairs, American Angus staff, interns, National Jr. Board members, Nebraska State Fair staff and employees and everyone involved was amazing. There were probably some glitches but none that many people noticed…it was a truly amazing experience.

Thank you to all that were involved in such a successful show.

Expectations are that this show will be back in Grand Island in just a few years. We are truly blessed to have the show facilities at our State Fairgrounds and I am in awe of the work and brainstorming by State Fairboard members (both past and present) that accomplished the move of the Fairgrounds and State Fair from Lincoln to Grand Island in one year between 2009 and 2010. Nebraskans are truly amazing on many levels!!

Our schedule just weeks ahead shows a wide range of activities, shows, events and meetings that should meet the needs of many of our membership, readers, fellow cattlemen, customers and producers.

• The ROV show in Grand Is-

land at the Nebraska State Fair is just one of 18 ROV shows across the nation this year on August 31st in Grand Island.

• Husker Harvest Days Sept 13-15th exhibit will be full, with eight breeders bringing a variety of cattle of all ages for display in our tent on Lot 1058. Stop by and see us and breed leading genetics from several operations.

• Sept 21-22nd finds a Cattlemen’s Bootcamp in Lincoln, NE covering a variety of topics for cattle producers. See the press release and schedule on page 37-38.

• Our Annual Angus Tour will be Sept 23-24th in the North Central Nebraska area. It will be a fun and exciting tour in our scenic Sandhills and Niobrara River Valley. Zoetis will host a social on the evening of Sept 22nd to kick off this year’s event.

• The National Angus Convention in Indianapolis Nov 4-7 shows a great program and the trade show will be a who’s who in the Livestock Industry, with many great products that you should check out for your operation.

• Our Annual Meeting/Banquet will be December 3rd in Kearney, we’ll begin to work on the speakers and program in the next few weeks.

On a sad note, we’re saying good bye to our Regional Manager with the American Angus Association, Jay Nordhausen. Jay and his wife Abbie had the opportunity to become partners in the Imperial, NE livestock sale barn...”a lifelong goal” as Jay tells me, and they felt they couldn’t let this business opportunity pass them by. We’ll certainly miss Jay and the impact his presence left on our members and the AAA members and the ANGUS business, here in Nebraska in just two short years.

With great confidence I say this isn’t the last you’ll hear or see from Jay. He and Abbie already have great goals for their business. We wish them our very best...see you and your family down the road, Jay!!

W

ell those of us tired of the hot weather are sure getting our fill of it this summer. This summer has been super busy as usual and flying by way too quickly.

On the home front we have been busy following Ryan and Bryson's baseball games and getting cattle ready for shows.

This was my last year of coaching my youngest son Bryson's team and the "Bulls" won the league championship so it is a great way to go out! As I write this we could sure use some moisture, our corn is tasseling and the dry land hay and pastures sure could use a drink.

We have preconditioned all of our calves and the heifers have been ultra sounded for pregnancy, and fall cows moved home ready to calve. Seems there is never a dull moment!

We had the privilege of exhibiting cattle at the Angus Jr. National in Grand Island in early July. What a great event, so good to see so many of you and I think the whole country knows how nice the facilities are in our great state! Special thanks go out to Jake and Kami Scott for heading up this year’s outstanding event. They along with the committee chairs and numerous volunteers put in an unbelievable amount of effort and time to make it the best Jr. show ever!! I can see the show back to Grand Island in the very near future! We as Nebraskans should be really proud of our facilities and most important the young people who represented our state in the highest level.

Upcoming events: Husker Harvest Days will be held Sept.

13-15 in Grand Island, we

would encourage everyone to come visit our tent as it is a great place to display and promote the great Angus cattle and people of our state. If you haven't signed up, please do for the annual Nebraska Angus Tour. It will be Sept. 23-24 and the group organizing the tour has done an outstanding job of making this one not to miss!

The National Angus Convention will be in Indianapolis Nov 4-7, and should be a great event as always.

In closing, I hope everyone has a great fall season. Please be careful out there in all of your fall activities! I really enjoy fall, weaning the new calf crop, preg-checking and dreaming which individual mating will give us that "great one."

Hopefully we will receive some good fall rains and higher cattle prices. It is going to be a tough year on our commercial customers as far as cash flows and dealing with lower prices and there is no better time to sell them on investing in quality Angus genetics to increase value for their calves.

And I almost forgot: Its only 45 days until Husker football!!

ope everyone has had a good summer!

The American Angus Association Board of Directors and Staff have recently met with key industry leaders in order to formulate a long range strategic plan for our Association. The objective is to gain insights and understanding of the various industry segments’ needs and how best the American Angus Association can meet those needs.

Five panel groups were assembled, and the panel designations were: Seedstock, Cow/Calf, Fed Cattle, Allied Industry/Academia, and Marketing/Product.

During our June Board meeting, the first findings were summarized. A commercial cow/calf survey had been conducted by a third party firm in order to assess the needs of that segment. Randy Blach, of Cattle Fax, addressed the board with topics retaining to market insight, and discussed where he believes Angus fits into the future. There will be subsequent long range planning sessions again in August, with further

review again at the September meeting. All of this information will help to guide us as we make decisions to move our breed forward in the industry.

As this is written in June, I realize that there are many extremely busy folks getting ready to host the National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island.

In advance, I tip my hat to the organizers and the countless volunteers who have devoted untold hours to making it a wonderful event for the youth.

ur Nebraska Angus family ROCKS! The 2016 National Junior Angus Show was a HUGE success! Our three years of planning, worrying, budgeting, and organizing resulted in an AWESOME event! Grand Island was host to 696 exhibitors and families while the state fairground barns housed 1,231 Angus cattle. Our guests were extremely excited to be in Nebraska for the NJAS and truly enjoyed the week from the beautiful patriotic opening ceremony on Monday evening to dining Valentino’s style Friday night! Everyone appreciated the “drive-through” unloading that only Nebraska offers, the close tie-outs, and the spacious wash racks. Our state fairgrounds received a “IMPRESSIVE” stamp of approval” from all! Thank you to all who made this event so remarkable!

Not only was this the first National Junior Angus Show held in Nebraska since 1990, the NJAS delegates elected a Nebraska member to join the board. Michaela Clowser is now a member on the National Junior Angus Board! She achieved her goal and will enjoy living her dream the next two years.

Many Nebraska members participated in the variety of contests. A beautiful black and white photograph of her grandpa earned Aliesha Dethlefs the title of Senior Division Overall Champion and the Overall Photo Champion in the Photography Contest. Jace Stagemeyer was first in the Intermediate B Prepared Public Speaking. The Junior Cook-Off team won the Overall Junior Roast Division with their tasty recipe and showmanship displayed through the group’s version of the popular Chopped TV show. The Junior Cook-Off team members were Tavin Uden, Rachel Smith, Kasey Dethlefs, Kasey Meyer, Kyra Meyer, and Nicole Nichols. This team can cook for me any time!

The Nebraska members did an excellent job of competing on the national level in the show ring.

Forty-nine members showed ninetythree head at the National Junior Angus Show. Reagan Skow and Sage Krebs exhibited class winners.

Now, I need to backtrack to the Nebraska Junior Angus State Show held May 27th - 29th in Broken Bow. Newly-elected officers whose terms begin at the Nebraska State Fair meeting in September are as follows: President-Savannah Schafer, 1st Vice

President-Dakota Lovett, 2nd Vice President-Miles Stagemeyer, Secretary/Treasurer-Miranda Raithel, Historian-Montana Lovett, and Directors-Reagan Skow, Kyra Meyer, and Jace Stagemeyer. The delegates for the National Junior Angus Show were Dakota Lovett and Reagan Skow.

Shaila Bennett and myself were chosen to represent Nebraska in the National Showmanship Contest. Sydni Lienemann is the 2016-2017 Nebraska Angus Queen. Brian and Tiffany Stoller are the new advisors. Congratulations to all state show champions!

The members thank Kent and Michelle Nelson as well as the entire Nelson clan for holding another successful state show. The Nebraska Junior Angus Association truly appreciates their hard work and dedication.

The next meeting will be held in September at the state fairgrounds.

More information will be sent out later as to the date, time, and location. The location for next year’s state show is still undetermined so let an advisor know if your family is interested in hosting the show. Feel free to contact an advisor, a junior officer, or myself if you have any items for the September agenda.

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association genuinely thanks Jake and Kami Scott, the breeders who donated Lot #16, the chairpersons, the volunteers, the members, the show sponsors and all Angus enthusiasts who contributed their time, generosity, energy and passion to make the 2016 National Junior Angus Show an extremely memorable event for all involved!

This year’s show definitely set the standard high for future national shows. The show would not have been a success without each and every one of you!

One of the three tenets for the Angus Foundation is education. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Grand Island, Neb., 51 scholarships were given to undergraduate and graduate students totaling nearly $212,000 invested in future agriculture industry leaders.

“Supporting youth and education is what the Angus Foundation is all about,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “None of this would be possible without incredibly generous donors from the Angus industry.”

A five-member committee evaluates the scholarship applications and considers National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) involvement, state association participation, leadership and other criteria. Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships.

The 2016 scholarship recipients from Nebraska that were recognized on July 7 and 8 during the NJAS follows:

Angus Foundation Scholarships - $3,000

Competing in the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) showmanship contest at junior nationals is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to represent one’s state and join a prestigious group of national showmen. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the showmanship contest, andCourtney Younge of Iowa claimed top showman.

“Showmanship means so much to me,” Younge says. “I’ve been doing it ever since I was a little girl, and at my first nationals in Iowa, I sat and watched the showmanship contests and I was like, ‘I want to be in there one day.’ I didn’t care if I was in the top 15 or top five, but I knew I wanted to be wearing those black jeans and the white shirt.”

During the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Grand Island, Neb., 51 junior members competed for the title of champion showman. The preliminary round consisted of four heats on Thursday, July 7, where the top 15 showmen were selected. The finalists competed Saturday, July 9, to be considered among the top five.

The journey to earning one of the coveted silver bowls, which are awarded to the top five showmen, begins in each contestant’s home state, where two juniors are selected as representatives. The top showman at the NJAS is honored with the Dean Hurlbut Award, named after the man who organized the first showmanship competition in July 1967 in Lexington, Ky. “It’s been quite an honor to see it last this long,” Hurlbut says. “To see the smiles on the faces of not only the participants, but their parents; this is important to them.

Not much has changed throughout the years.”

Three judges evaluated the juniors on their skills while handling an animal, their ability to follow instructions, and evidence of courtesy and sportsmanship in the showring. This year’s showmanship judges were Doug Satree, Montague, Texas; Jennifer Carrico, Redfield, Iowa; and Colt Keffer, Fort Collins, Colo.

Following Younge in the top five were second place, Macy Perry, Prather, Calif.; third place, John Knight, Montpelier Station, Va.; fourth place, Braden Henricks, Anadarko, Okla.; and fifth place, Chase Anderson, Chrisman, Ill. As younger juniors watch these top showmen, Younge offers this advice: “Find a mentor, find a really good showman you think shows really well, watch them and learn from them. Keep working hard, ask lots of questions and keep working at your showmanship every day.”

The National Junior Angus Showmanship Contest brings together the breed’s top young showmen and it is considered an honor to be among those competing.

INTERNS JOIN AMERICAN ANGUS A S S O C I AT I O N T E A M C o l l eg e st u d en t s b u ck l e i n f o r a b u sy su m m er w i t h t h e n a t i o n ’ s l a r g est b eef b r eed organization.

Looking to gain experience and advance the beef cattle industry, three summer interns recently joined the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo. Throughout their internship experiences, the college students will work alongside professionals and assist with planning and coverage of major events such as the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS).

A native of Wallace, Neb., Emily Hasenauer grew up on her family’s farm and Angus operation. She recently graduated from the University of Arkansas and will return to pursue a master’s in agricultural economics. In the future, she hopes to stay active in the family Angus herd.

Hasenauer started her internship May 23, and her time at Angus will be spent coordinating and attending Association events and activities, such as the NJAS, LEAD conference and several regional Angus shows.

“To work at Angus means to share the passion for the Angus breed and ignite that fire for our future producers,” Hasenauer said. “By teaching and influencing our future producers, we can continue to be a leader in genetics and marketing, and maintain the reputation of the ‘business

breed.’

A fellow Angus breeder and exhibitor, Hasenauer looks forward to working for the Association she grew up in and that has given her many opportunities: “I want to give back to the industry that has given me so much. The skills I will obtain during my internship with the American Angus Association will allow me to enter into the livestock industry not as an employee, but as a leader.”

Dakota Lovett, Bladen, Neb., is a thirdgeneration Angus producer. He is active in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and considers it a privilege to have grown up raising Angus cattle.

“As producers we take a lot of pride in our cattle,” Lovett says. “It’s important to reach out to fellow producers, establish relationships with them and connect with consumers.”

Lovett, a sophomore at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., recently competed in the 2016 Angus Ambassador competition July 21 in Saint Joseph, Mo. Hosted by the NJAA, Lovett visited the American Angus Association headquarters along with three other finalists.

“The Angus breed and its membership are seen as leaders within the beef industry,” says Angus Ambassador Judge Kelli Retallick, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) director of genetic service. “It is important juniors understand the magnitude of the roles they have in the future, as many of them will be decision-makers for the beef industry.”

Judging the competition, along with Retallick, were Shelby Mettlen, Angus Media assistant editor; Ryan Ruppert, Association director of regional mangers; Dave Nichols, Association board member; and Callie Mullins, associate professor of ani-

mal science at Northwest Missouri State University.

To be considered for the position each junior member submitted a cover letter, résumé and two essay responses. The top candidates were invited to the American Angus Association, where they gave a 5-8 minute presentation followed by five minutes of questions.

Topics of presentations ranged from Angus advocacy to genetic selection decisions. Lovett’s presentation addressed animal advocacy and how agriculturalists should react to animal rights activists.

Lovett discussed the challenges associated with consumer perspectives of agriculture production, and ways for cattlemen and women to be involved in consumer conversations.

After the presentations, the judges selected Cassandra Garcia, Renton, Wash., as the 2016-2017 Angus Ambassador. Garcia is a student at the University of Washington majoring in business administration and marketing. Joining Lovett as finalists were Haley Throne, Lexington, Ga., and Sierra Day, Cerro Gordo, Ill. Funded by the Angus Foundation, the Angus Ambassador will represent the breed at industry events throughout the United States and Canada, including the 2016 Angus Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.; a Certified Angus Beef LLC Building Blocks seminar in Wooster, Ohio; the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Cattle Industry Annual Convention in Nashville, Tenn.; the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Research Symposium and Convention; and the Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference in Canada.

biotechnology. Butler is a fifth-generation Angus breeder, and she attended her first NJAS in 2012 in Louisville, Ky. Clowser attended her first junior nationals in 2005 in Denver, Colo., as a firstgeneration Angus breeder. Entering her junior year at the University of Nebraska– Lincoln, Clowser is studying agricultural economics. As a member of the NJAB, Clowser looks forward to working as a

team and growing the Angus family.

Cowles joins the board as a fifth-generation Angus breeder, coming from his family’s ranch, Pleasant Hill Farms, in Rockfield, Ky. He attended his first junior nationals in 2011 at Harrisburg, Pa. A sophomore at Oklahoma State University, Cowles is majoring in animal science with a business option.

Hope has dreamed of being an NJAB member since her first junior nationals in 2007 in Tulsa, Okla. Growing up in Berryville, Va., she spent summers with her cousins on the farm, and now owns and operates a small Angus cow-calf operation. Hope is pursuing a degree in animal science with a minor in photography at Ferrum College.

Pohlman is pursuing a degree in biochemistry and animal science at the University of Arkansas. He and his family raise show cattle in Prairie Grove, Ark., and have done so for the last four generations. Pohlman is eager to give back to the NJAA and serve as a role model for fellow juniors. He has also served at the NJAA’s Angus Ambassador, representing the breed’s youth at events across the country.

Wagner attended her first junior nationals in 2007 in Tulsa, Okla. She grew up in Billings, Mont., where her family operates a herd of Angus show cattle. This fall, she will begin her second year at Rocky Mountain College, where she is pursuing a degree in elementary education with a minor

in reading. Wagner says the dream of being a green coat has finally come true.

As six join the board, six also said goodbye to the NJAA and will retire in August at the LEAD conference. Marinade: 1/3 cup tamari sauce 1/2 cup olive oil 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup Worcestershire 1 Tbs. black pepper A. 1.® Sauce 1 Tbs. dried basil 1 Tbs. dried parsley 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 Tbs. black pepper 1 tsp. chipotle chili powder

To prepare: • Mix all ingredients in a one-gallon Ziploc® bag and marinate roast for 1 hour.

• Add olive oil to coat bottom of a Lifetime® liquid-core 5-quart cooker and heat to 350° F. Sear the roast on all sides.

• Add sliced fresh mushrooms. Reduce heat to simmer and add 1 cup of cooking liquid of your choice (Red cooking wine, chicken broth, stock, water).

• Cook on simmer for 3-4 hours, adding liquid if needed. The cooking liquid will reduce to make a nice sauce.

rEEN VALLEY CAttLE Co. Lifelong Love of Cattle Green Valley Cattle (GVC), is located sixteen miles Southwest of Atkinson, NE in Holt County. Part of the third generation Garwood ranch land is located in Green Valley Township and that’s the origin of the name “Green Valley Cattle”. GVC consists of approximately 5,000 acres of combined owned and leased ranch land.

4-H and FFA had a big impact on Dennis Garwood's early years with lots of fond memories and experiences. His love of cattle and working on the land brought Dennis back to the family ranch after earning a four year degree at Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, NE. Dennis married his wife Sandra between their Sophomore and Junior years in college. They have wonderful recollections of their family growing, working and “showing” together. Their three children Vance, Sarah, and Grant along with their families (includung six grandchildren) have their own businesses but are always great help “back at the ranch” especially at sale time. Currently GVC seedstock is marketed in their spring production sale at the ranch the first Saturday in March and this fall they’ve scheduled a Female Sale for November 12th which will also be an annual event. The first registered Angus females were pur-

chased in 1987 and by 2014 had grown to nearly 300 registered Angus females that were managed alongside their black Maine Anjou cow herd that was started in the early 80’s. The MaineAnjou herd numbered over 300 head as well.

A decision to disperse the Maine cowherd was made in the fall of 2014, which enabled the Garwood’s to devote all of their resources to raising Angus cattle. The last two years they have added several new elite sires and donor females from the Vintage, Pine View, Gardiner, and Deer Valley programs in an attempt to create industry leading genetics at a faster pace and in larger volume.

The GVC cowherd represents generations of good looking, deep bodied, hard working females. Sires represented in some of the older “mature” females include 004, Final Answer, Pioneer, Priority, Grid Iron, Eagle Eye,

Testing, and others yet to be developed) striving to produce elite Angus genetics that excel in all traits from “conception to consumption” in order to make their own and their customers operations more profitable. In 1928, after several dry years in Kansas, Leland’s grandfather, John Nichols moved his family to the beaver valley north of Bartlett, NE. He thought he had found a cattleman’s paradise in north central Nebraska with its sub-irrigated meadows and artesian wells.

Dave and his wife Lynn moved to the Chambers area in 1995, leasing a ranch that Lynn’s grandmother owned, where the majority of the registered cows are kept. Their son Taylor is currently enrolled at Chadron State College and daughter Nicole attends Chambers public school.

The registered angus herd was started in 1994 when Dave and Lynn

purchased a pair yearling heifers.

Over the following years the registered herd grew with additional female and embryo purchases. As Taylor and Nicole have progressed through 4-H and become involved with the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, they have purchased some heifers to start their own herds.

Nichols Ranch

Dave and Lynn currently run 200 commercial angus cows and 100 registered cows. With no row crop farming at the Chambers ranch, grass and prairie hay are the only feed produced. Since any other feedstuffs must be purchased, the cows receive little supplementation. Early on the cow herd was heavily influenced with Hoff Scotch Cap genetics. Many of the cows are now sired by Connealy Rawhide 751, Connealy Right Answer, Connealy Global I600 and Upside 021V and SAV Bismarck.

The Nichols annually sell 35-40 bulls on their video bull auction the second Monday of March. The 2015 calves are mainly sired by Poss Superior 441, SAV Angus Valley, SAV Bismarck, Earnan 343 & Connealy Global 1600.

couldn’t find anything better that seemed to improve our herd like the Rito lineage. Dad would say, “If a bull had bad feet, a bad disposition, or loses his weight in pasture…he goes to town. Same with cows, they also have to breed back and hold their body score at 6 or higher in the winter on 30-35 lbs of feed and wean a fat calf that is ready for market at 14-15 months of age and hang 60% and grade Prime or Choice or she goes to town too!” We still use this guideline today and the domination of the Rito bloodline in our herd’s pedigrees is the proof that it works. Freeman (Fee) made the first two hydraulic rakes from used dump rakes for his own use. The first took about six weeks to build; the second about a week. While the Rowse family was putting up hay the first summer after building the rakes, people from South Dakota came to see the rakes. How they heard about the rakes, no one knew.

Over the next few years, Fee and his wife Betty built rakes for neighbors using their old dump rakes. At the time, Betty painted the rakes with a paint brush. Dale Mitchell of Amelia, NE was the first customer and Sandhill Equipment of Bassett, NE became the first dealer. Rowse Hydraulic Rakes Co., Inc. was incorporated Jan. 2, 1969.

Rowse started manufacturing double sickle-bar mowers around 1967. Fee mounted an IH Number 24 pitman type mower on the drawbar of an H Farmall tractor and another 24 mower on the front axle of a car. Both mowers ran from the PTO of the tractor. A trailing mower was designed and patented in 1976. As Fee and Betty began building a new brick home in 1968, Fee designed a threeyard scraper to fill dirt around the foundation. Rowse scrapers were born. A seven-yard model was added in1974 and a five-yard model shortly after.

In 1984, the windrow fluffer, a line of wheel rakes and the V-rakes were added. Throughout the years, calf cradles and bale movers were added, and most recently the Ultimate V-Rake was added in 2004.

Rowse Rakes markets its products directly through dealers and independent sales representatives. Rowse equipment is sold in 32 states and Canada. Rowse has also sold equipment as far away as Mongolia.

Today, Rowse has two plants: one in O'Neill, NE, and the original plant north of Burwell. They operate with a total of 40+ employees, with Freeman's son Dan Rowse, still in a Secretary/Treasurer position, and grandsons, Randy Worden and Rod Rowse, as President and CEO, respectively, heading up the corporation.

Betty still lives on the home place and is still an active consultant regarding the business. Great-grandsons Ty Rowse and Cameron Worden are involved in production at the Burwell plant with Ty also being Vice President.

avoiding fads and being committed to raising fault-free, balanced cattle. For over 90 years our cowherd, through rigid selection, has stood the test of time, through market ups and downs.

By 1923, Grandfather, William August Sitz and his wife Frieda, were in the Angus business. By 1926 William and Frieda were in serious pursuit of adding to their registered herd. They purchased the bulk of their registered Angus cows from William Williams of Clarks, Nebraska.

By agreement between the Sitz's and Mr. Williams, the bull calves that were born to these first heifers would be traded back to William Williams for more heifer calves, which quickly expanded the Sitz’s Angus cowherd.

The Marshall Queens, Blackbirds, Evidences Eppionias, Erica Ellens, Proud Formeras, Doras (which were recently discovered to be a Proud Formera cow line), and the Emma Es all found in our herd today, trace back to Grandfather Will Sitz’s original cow families.

Mike’s parents, Bill and Dee (Stout) Sitz continued to build the cowherd Will and Frieda started at the present ranch in southeastern Rock County where they raised their children, Bill Jr., Judy, Sheryl and Mike, and where Mike continues to ranch today. An eye-appealing, efficient, functional and problem-free cowherd is the first emphasis of Mike and Debra’s program, and the resulting bulls are how others can tap into these genetics.

The Mike Sitz Angus Ranch bull program markets exclusively top coming two-year-old virgin bulls that are raised under range conditions with the goal of developing long-term soundness. Since our cows forage grass, their real proof of efficiency of their performance is in a grass-based environment, our yearling bulls are not supplemented with other feedstuffs besides native Sandhills pasture.

This guarantees our bulls perform on grass and are more easily evaluated.

While they continue to exercise on a quarter section pasture, the bulls are started on a high roughage ration in November prior to the sale. On the first Monday in February, the coming2-year-old bulls will travel to Burwell for the 44th Annual Sale.

Mike and Debra Cook, a cattle feeder’s daughter, were married in 1975. They continue the Angus tradition on the ranch where Mike was raised in southeastern Rock County, where they raised their four children: Jesse is a tax attorney and chair of the Wealth Management practice group at Baird Holm LLP in Omaha, Nebraska. His practice focuses on business succession and transition issues, estate planning and administration, tax disputes, and charitable planning. He has a wife, Tori, and a ten year old son, John.

Joel, Bethany Johnston, and their young daughter, Jordee, ranch southwest of Thedford. Shortly after Joel and Bethany were married, they traded a horse to Mike for their first three registered Angus cows. Since

then, Joel continues to build his purebred herd with bred heifers and share cows from Mike. All the cows in the Johnston’s purebred herd came from the Mike Sitz cowherd that has been “closed” for four generations. Joel utilizes AI to build genetics in his herd and began selling the bulls on the Mike Sitz Angus Bull Sale five years ago.

“Mike and I share the same vision of what we are looking for in a cow and bull. I strive to raise cattle with eye appeal, thickness, strong maternal traits, moderate frame size, strong pedigrees, that do well in the Sandhills,” Joel stated. “With just myself and no hired man, the cows work for me -- not the other way around. Because the cattle can excel in a commercial cows’ environment, our bull customers want those genetics.” And, yes, that first trade worked out well.

They also have a registered and commercial Angus herd. Johanna also works as a nurse practitioner.

Ransom and Rachael (Fithian) Sitz live in Fort Collins, CO, where Rachael is pursuing a PhD in urban tree pathology/entomology and Ransom works as a Research Associate for Pioneer Seed Company. They stay involved with the ranch by helping with the annual bull sale and leasing a couple cows from Mike and Debby.

Our cowherd consists of 600+ cows split between a spring and fall calving season. Lynn began utilizing artificial insemination in 1978 through the Sire Evaluation program with the Angus Association, and was able to test sires from across the nation. He sampled bulls from the Jorgensen performance herd in South Dakota, and formed a deep appreciation for their cattle and their family. We became a cooperator herd with Jorgensen Land & Cattle in 1995, and have continued using their genetics exclusively with the exception of some outside AI sires.

As the result of this partnership, all bull calves are sold to Jorgensen's at weaning and either marketed through their extensive bull leasing program, or finished out in their feedyard. All performance data collected on the bulls is sent to us for future breeding decisions.

We strive to produce moderate framed, deep-sided females that are designed to function in a range/cubes environment. Stacking generations of line bred performance cattle has allowed us to develop an extremely consistent calf crop and solidify other desirable traits such as a natural fleshing ability and a good disposition.

We market registered and commercial females throughout the year private treaty, and always welcome visitors to stop by the ranch and view the cattle.

priNG VALLEY ANGUS Boerger ranch Homestead provides Firm Foundation Spring Valley Ranch and Cattle, LLC (SVR) is located near Rose, NE and is owned by Frank and Anne Taylor and their children, Joshua and Grace. It is a fairly new operation in Nebraska, but the land is steeped in nearly 150 years of Sandhills Ranch stewardship and decades of family agricultural involvement.

The Taylor family has been involved in agriculture for nearly 175 years, has raised cattle for forty-five years, and also farms in Iowa. Ben and Sherry Andrews are the most important cogs in the cattle operation – they are the ranch managers -- and Robin Wiese plays a vital role in the operation.

Spring Valley currently holds its annual bull sale on the first Friday in February at the Burwell Livestock Market. Bulls are also available by private treaty.

This year’s sale will be held on February 3, 2017, and will feature sons sired by F0203, Ambush 2172, Sinclair Express 6V47, N Bar EXT, Adelard of Wye, Contact of Wye and SVR’s own bulls. The 2018 sale will feature sons of Columbus of Wye. The Taylors purchased the ranch from Ben and Judy Boerger. Ben’s grandparents homesteaded the ranch in 1875, having emigrated from Germany. When Ben’s grandmother was 15, she walked 135 miles from Kearney to stake her claim, walked back to Kearney to file it, then walked home to the ranch to begin her life in the Sandhills. It is a fascinating story that is well told on The American Rancher episode on the Spring Valle’s website: www.svr-angus.com. Ben Boerger’s statement that he is proud of the way his family’s ranch has been maintained ranks as the highest compliment the Taylor and the Andrews families could receive.

Smith Angus Ranch has a strong ranching tradition that dates back 132 years. Kent’s Grandfather, Abraham Smith, acquired land under the Homestead Act in 1884 and that land has remained in the Smith Family for 5 generations. The Smiths take great pride in caring for the land and it’s natural resources. Each generation has been recognized as “Stewards of the Land”.

The ranch consists of 15,000 owned and leased acres in Rock and Loup Counties. Four hundred cows are run in both a spring and fall herd.

ment, Payweight, Tour of Duty, Windy 078, Rainmaker, Upward, O’Connor, Tombstone, and Front & Center. The Smiths are diversified and also run 900 raised and purchased yearlings on the Loup County land that is leased from Kent’s Mother. The calves are bought in the early spring, run on grass in the hills during the summer, and marketed at Bassett Livestock Auction in the fall depending on rainfall and grass supply.

Smith Angus Ranch originated in 1988 when Kent and Faye purchased the entire herd of K+ Registered Angus cows. They hosted their first annual bull sale in the spring of 1989.

Since that time they have hosted twenty-seven annual bull sales, with the last nine sales being held at the ranch. Their sale is the last Friday in March. They concentrate on producing the type of cattle that will perform well and turn a profit for the commercial cattleman. The Smiths utilize a strong AI program, and strive for a strong, maternal cow herd.

GeneSeek GGPHD Genomic testing is being utilized on all sale bulls for enhanced and increased accuracy of EPDs, as well as using DNA testing to verify parentage. The Genomic testing provides the equivalent of twenty progeny to a young sire’s EPDs accuracies. This adds greater value for the commercial cattlemen so they can make their bull buying decisions with confidence.

In 2014 Smith Angus made the decision to utilize the latest in video technology on sale day. The bulls are videoed in late February, and can be viewed several weeks before the sale on their website. On sale day, the

bulls are penned in sire groups for easy viewing and evaluation. They are not run through the ring, but viewed on high quality big screens in the sale facility. They have found that it is less stressful on the cattle and reduces the need for additional help on sale day. It has been a well accepted change for everyone.

The more things change, the more they seem to stay the same. The Smiths are always looking for ways to graze their pastures longer, reduce feed costs, and utilize their natural resources to the fullest. Staying abreast of the ever changing technology that affects our industry is an ongoing challenge. But most of all, they continue to value their heritage and traditions that span well over a century.

& B CAttLE Under the auspices of A&B Cattle, the Arlen and Becky Sawyer family has a rich tradition of Angus cattle threaded through their lives. Their commercial and purebred Angus cow herd was established near Bassett, Nebraska in 1976, and they have been operating their ranch since 1984.

In 1994, A&B Cattle was recognized as a Historic Angus Herd based on more than 50 years of continuously raising registered Angus cattle in the Sawyer family. Arlen’s family established their registered Angus cow herd at Howard, S.D. in 1917, which was operated by his grandfather and father. Arlen’s family celebrated its farm centennial at Howard in 1987. Becky’s

family was also in the Angus cattle business near Cresco, Iowa purchasing their first Angus females in 1961.

In 1975, fresh out of college from South Dakota State University (SDSU) and recently married, Arlen and Becky embarked on their life-long pursuit of raising registered Angus cattle. They started with only a few head of cows, predominantly Dynamo and Emulation 31 bred females, while Arlen was herdsman at Cottonwood Angus Farm near Pipestone, Minn.

From 1976 to 1983, the A&B cow herd grew in size and numbers while Arlen managed the K Plus Angus cow herd near Bassett.

In 1984, Arlen and Becky purchased a small place in Rock County, located seven miles south of Bassett.

At the same time, they became affiliated with Profitmaker Bulls. From 1984 to 1990, Arlen and Becky purchased more ranch land and expanded their cow herd while also maintaining and managing a cow herd for Premier Angus under the direction of Bill Wilson of Cloverdale, Ind. Taking advantage of the Pine Drive genetics made available by Premier Angus, the A&B cow herd began to flourish.

In 1990, Arlen and Becky established “A&B Cattle” and, since that time have hosted an annual bull sale.

Over the years, the Sawyers were able to build a sale barn/office at their headquarters south of Bassett, and establish a calving facility at their ranch eight miles south and five miles east of Bassett. Since 1995, they have hosted all of their sales at the ranch headquarters.

For the past 20 years, the Sawyers' main priority has been to produce thrifty, maintenance free cattle that can thrive under Nebraska Sandhills range conditions. The cow herd consists of registered and commercial spring and fall calving Angus cows that run just like cows on other ranch operations in the area.

The cow herd is summered on native grass pastures and wintered on nearby crop residue stalk fields. The A

& B cow herd has evolved in this Sandhills ranch environment and is bred to thrive on the forages nature provides. Calves are not creep fed and cows are not supplemented while on grass, thus providing the most accurate data of a cow's performance. Any cows that do not wean a big calf consistently or are reproductively inferior are automatically culled. This rigid selection process and rigorous environment has resulted in females that are deep-sided and broody, with enough milk production to wean heavy calves, but still breed back.

An annual bull sale markets the top fall coming two-year old and spring yearling bulls that have survived rigorous culling and performance evaluations. Bulls are always available for private treaty sales as well.

Other marketing includes feeding steers from the commercial herd and about the bottom one-third of the bulls born in the registered herd. The commercial steers are GeneMax DNA tested for sire identification. In 2016, all of the steers graded Choice or better with one third of those steers grading Prime, all while gaining over 4 lbs. per day on feed. All carcass data collected is submitted to the American Angus Association.

A group of purebred females is marketed annually in August as fall calvers and December as spring calvers . Almost every heifer born at A & B Cattle is calved at the ranch. After evaluating their production and performance of their first calf, about one third of the females are sold as bred second calvers.

The goal remains in this decade as in the past, to raise moderate-framed cattle with superior early growth and performance while maintaining moderate birth weights and exceptional maternal and carcass traits.

Arlen and Becky Sawyer own and operate A& B Cattle and actively manage the day to day activities at the ranch. Arlen served two terms on the American Angus Association board of directors 2008 – 2014 and as Chairman of the Certified Angus Beef board in 2012. He also served as president of the Nebraska Angus Association and as president of the Area II Nebraska Cattlemen. Both he and Becky served as advisors to the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. In In 2012 the Sawyer family was recognized as Nebraska’s Producer of the Year.

The Sawyers have two children, Jessica and Adam, who are actively involved in the day-to-day ranch operations as well as many Angus activities.

They both own registered Angus cows that are part of the ranch operation.

Adam and his wife Jenessa are currently living in Valentine, Nebr. where he is employed by Sandhills State Bank. Jenessa is employed by ORIgen and was raised on a Montana Angus ranch. They were married Aug. 15, 2015. Adam is building a cow herd at the ranch and is directly involved with ranch activities.

Jessica is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and is currently living in Kearney, Nebr. where she works at Richard Young. She also has a small herd of registered Angus cows at Bassett and spends her spare time helping out at the ranch as well.

The Sawyer family invites everyone to attend the evening meal stop at their ranch headquarters seven miles south of Bassett on Sept. 23. Cattle will be displayed out of their sires Spotlite, 20X, Final Design and Shooter.

Hall Ranch has been in family hands since its purchase in 1901 by the great grandfather of Ed, Carolyn and Beverly Hall. In the early years the ranch was stocked with Shorthorn cattle and then transitioned to Herefords.

However, by 1960 Ed and Carolyn purchased 20 Bardoliermere, Blackcap and Eileenmere cows, the ranch’s first registered Angus cattle. Hall family loyalty remains with the black Angus cow. The ranch, grown from its original 1,138 acre claim, has now expanded from Keya Paha to Rock County, and is raising an all registered black Angus herd.

Animals are raised on the mixture of Sandhills and hard grass. The tour stop, besides breakfast should allow a viewing of our cow/calf pairs with scenic Niobrara river views. The ranch also runs yearlings, many of our own, along with the purchased steers of our bull customers, typically from January through August. Replacement quality heifers are marketed privately.

Ed and his wife Betty, held private treaty bull sales in the seventies and made the jump to an annual production sale in 1982. The tradition continues with a bull sale on the first Wednesday of March and the ranch will be having their 36th annual production sale on March 1, 2017 at the Bassett Livestock Auction in Bassett, NE. Their children, Les, Kyla, and Cody were active showing and serving in the Nebraska Junior Angus Association as youth. Kyla served on the National Junior Angus Association Board in the early 1990’s. Les and his family returned to the ranch full time in 1995, and the A.I. program began in earnest.

Goals for the ranch have always and still include raising productive, efficient, maternal cows. We strive to provide a genetic package the will produce high quality feeder cattle for ourselves and our customers. All our cattle work for their keep. Cows forage in pasture throughout the winter.

Our bulls, raised in pasture from the beginning to end, are expected to forage and navigate the canyon terrain as they grow and develop into the twoyear old bull that is able to withstand the rigors of breeding season with lasting potential.

We are excited to be a part of the tour this year and we will be happy the share the early settlement history of our ranch, smack dab in Doc Middleton country. With the area “Hangin’ Tree” in our yard, the Robinson dugout (home of two of Doc Middleton’s wives) and the discovery of a murder victim in our corrals, there is plenty of area intrigue. ArStoW ANGUS Barstow Angus began in 1987 when Neri’s parents, Marlan and Shirley, moved the Angus herd from the family farm in south central Kansas to the ranch near Springview.

Neri and Patty bought their first registered Angus heifers from Marlan in 1988 and the AI program was started.

The Barstow’s bought the Nebraska ranch in 1976. Neri moved there in the fall of 1978 and he and Patty were married in 1980. Patty is a native of Keya Paha County growing up on a ranch 25 miles northwest of their current home. In 2001 Marlan and Shirley moved to Nebraska and

bought a home in Springview to be closer to the ranch. Although they still own a few head of cows, Marlan retired from active ranching a number of years ago.

After completing their education, oldest son, Wyatt, brought his family, Amanda and little Wylie, back to the ranch in 2013. Youngest son, Austin, has recently graduated from Montana State University and is in the process of moving back the area.

Together, the family maintains a herd of 225 registered cows utilizing AI practices, an extensive ET program and industry leading herd bulls. The first bull sale auction was held in the ranch quonset on a very cold day in 1992. It is now held each year, the second Monday in March in their new sale facility completed in 2015. The Barstow’s market around 100 bulls annually. Select females are made available through their annual production sale as well as private treaty sales.

They work hard to search out herd improving genetics and maintain a commitment to the needs of their customers and the cattle industry.

Neri served nine years on the board of the Nebraska Angus Association and for the past several years has been selected as a Nebraska Delegate for the National Angus Convention.

Patty is also involved outside of her ranch-wife duties. She owns a tax preparation and accounting business also located in the new sale facility.

K ANGUS originated in 1984 when Tim and Kim Marlatt were married, and today also includes our son, Rick and his wife Jenn, and our daughter Sara. The basis of the TK Angus herd goes back to heifers that Tim showed in the 1970s, including 5 Grand and Reserve Grand Champion females at the Nebraska State Fair. The Tessa and Edella cow families go back to these original foundation females.

In 1989 we held our first annual bull sale at the Ogallala Livestock Auction while living in Imperial, NE. In 1991, we moved to Gordon and made TK Angus a full time operation.

The move to our current location in Wood Lake, NE was made during the spring of 2013 and we were pleased that long time employee Troy Wright made the move with us and continues to be an integral part of our operation.

In 1994 we held our first female sale, and we continue to offer females through a production sale on an every other year basis. We market our bulls through an annual bull sale, with the 29th edition scheduled for December 5, 2016.

Our herd sires over the years have included TK Kruggerand 397 (1997), SAF Strategy (1999), Connealy Deep Canyon (2000), SydGen Bullet (2005), SydGen Mandate (2006), SAV Prosperity (2010), Connealy Contractor (2010), SAV Platinum (2011), SAV Paramount (2011), Sitz Investment (2013), and young prospects SAV Renown (2014), Duff Emancipate (2015), Connealy Iron Man (2016), SAV Succeed (2016), and SAV Remembrance (2016).

We run our registered herd like a commercial herd in an environment that fits that of our commercial customers, using our available feed resources – native range, meadow hay, alfalfa, corn silage, distillers, salt, and mineral. Today we run 600 fall calving cows and bred heifers, 200 spring calving cows and bred heifers, plus 250 commercial females.

Our goal is to produce bulls that make our commercial bull customers profitable in the long term. And as Angus females are fertile, we offer proven females to other breeders in production sales and private treaty in order to match our grass resources.

We live, work, and enjoy the cattle business and look forward to giving you a glimpse of our operation as a part of the Nebraska Angus Association Tour. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 24th, and a herd visit any time!

At TK Angus, our philosophy is to find a good herd sire prospect that fits into a consistent phenotype, hang our hat on him, and put him to use. We feel that this philosophy has led to a uniform, productive cow herd.

iLLEr ANGUS is a family owned and operated ranch located in Cody, Nebraska.

Based in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the Miller Angus cowherd is raised as a typical commercial herd to ensure genetics with longevity, soundness, maternal production, and fleshing ability. Relying on native grasses for summer pasture and stalk fields/high-roughage hay during the winter months, the cowherd is nonpampered year round. Strong selection for length of body, thickness, and depth of rib prove to keep phenotypically correct cattle as the base of operation. Using eye appeal, EPDs,

ultrasound data, and HD50k/i50k information to carefully select every sire used in the natural service, A.I., and embryo transfer programs, the annual bull sale offers lasting bulls that meet the needs of any program.

Originating in North Platte, NE, Phil and Pat Miller first moved Cody in 1983. Phil spent the early part of his

life raising registered Limousin seedstock as part of D&M Limousin. After graduating from Doane College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 2012, Landon Miller returned to the ranch.

In the summer of 2016, he married Danielle. Luke Miller returned to the ranch in 2015 with an Accounting Degree from Chadron State College. In

2007, the Miller family purchased their first registered Angus cattle; and has since committed all efforts to the Angus breed. Combining over 50 years of registered breeding experience, every member of the Miller family is involved in the day-to-day operations around the ranch.

Junior Spotlight MIRANDA RAITHEL EARNS J U N I O R B R O N Z E A N D S I LV E R A WA R D S Miranda Raithel, Falls City, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Clark, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 16-year-old daughter of Ed and Mandy Raithel attends Sacred Heart High School and is a member of the NJAA. She has participated in local, state, regional and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Miranda participated in team fitting, team sales and quiz bowl contests.

She has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) and consigned cattle at the Herbster Angus Farms Bull Sale.

The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972.

Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recently recognized Bob and Becky Tiedeman of North Platte, Neb., as the newest inductees into the prestigious Honorary Angus Foundation at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Grand Island, Neb.

In 1985, the NJAA Board of Directors established the Honorary Angus Foundation to recognize and thank those who have shown incredible support of Angus youth.

Seven Angus breeders were honored as the first inductees, and each year, the NJAA honors up to three individuals.

Any member of the American Angus Association is eligible to nominate individuals or organizations for the Honorary Angus Foundation. A complete list of members can be found online.

The Tiedemans have been dedicated to assisting with the sale of the Angus Foundation Heifer Package for many years, whether by encouraging Angus peers to buy the heifer or even fitting and preparing the heifer for the sale. The Tiedemans have also generously donated cash gifts to the Angus Foundation and been active in the organization’s fundraising activities, donating and buying items in the Angus Foundation’s silent auction at the NJAS. “Bob and Becky are always finding a way to give back to the Angus breed and help our Angus youth,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “They love this industry and promoting what it stands for.”

Becky’s family has a long history of Angus Foundation support. Her father, Jim Baldridge, purchased the first two Angus Heifer Packages in 1980 and 1981.

Champions of the Angus Foundation’s mission to their Angus friends, the Tiedemans were longtime friends of the late Camron Cooper of Twin Bridges, Mont., who bequeathed her Talon Ranch and Angus herd to the Angus Foundation in 2009.

The Tiedemans own a herd of black Angus and Red Angus cattle. Becky serves on the newly created Angus Foundation Resource Development Committee, which works to secure resources for the Angus Foundation. The Tiedemans have also served as advisors for the Nebraska Junior Angus Association.

The Tiedemans have a son, Jake, and a daughter-in-law, Lindsay. Jake is a former NJAA chairman and is still active with the family’s Angus herd.

At the 2016 NJAS awards ceremony, the Tiedemans were honored along with fellow 2016 inductees Kelly and Martie Joe Schaff, Schaff Angus Valley, Saint Anthony, N.D., and Joe and Susanne Bush, J&S Ranch, Gatesville, Texas.

Cattle producers, mark your calendars! This year’s Cattlemen’s Boot Camp will be held Sept. 21-22, 2016, at the Animal Science Complex on the University of Nebraska’s East Campus in Lincoln, Neb. The educational event will be jointly hosted by the American Angus Association and the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL), and will provide purebred and commercial cattle producers with timely information presented by academic and industry professionals. Generously funded by the Angus Foundation, Cattlemen’s Boot Camp is open to all cattle producers and features two days of educational speakers and workshops, and hands-on activities to help cattlemen and cattlewomen improve their herd operations.

Attendees will look forward to hearing from industry professionals on a market outlook, range and crop management tips, updates on carcass trends and information on bull selection, source verification, genetic improvement, and general herd management.

Registration is $75 per person, and includes meals and educational materials. Registration forms are due Aug. 15, 2016, and can be submitted online or mailed to Jaclyn Clark at the American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. Late and walk-in registrations will not be accepted.

A block of hotel rooms are reserved at the Holiday Inn located at 141 N Ninth St. in Lincoln, Neb., for $119 plus tax until Sept. 1, 2016. A tentative schedule follows.
