All bulls must be performance tested through their respective breed association performance testing program.
(1) Two-year old bulls (born in 2024) must have completed a post weaning record with a minimum of 140 days and must have been 11-14 months of age when weighed off test. The minimum weight per day of age requirements when weighed in Springfield will be at least 2.30 for the Senior Two-Year-Olds. The Fall Senior TwoYear Old bulls minimum weight per day of age will be 2.6 (JulySept.) and 2.8 (Oct.-Nov.).
(2) Yearling bulls (born from Dec. 1, 2024 through March 31, 2025 must have birth and weaning weights recorded with their association. Minimum weight per day of age requirements when weighed in is 2.9 for Dec 2024 & 3.0 for Jan-Mar 2025.
(3) Genomic-Enhanced EPDs are required on all bulls and these are secured from the Angus, Simmental (SimAngus), and Hereford performance programs.
All bulls are guaranteed breeders when given adequate care after purchase (please reference “Bull Management” fact sheet written by Dave Seibert found on the sale website.) A bull is considered a breeder if he settles half of the females he is exposed to during a controlled (60-75 day) breeding season and considering these maximum exposure limits: Senior twoyear old, 30 cows; Junior two-year old, 25 cows; and yearling, 15 cows. Yearling bulls should not be used until at least 15 months of age. The breeding guarantee is good through December 1, 2026.
Guarantee is void under the following purchase weight gain/ loss situations: Senior two-year-old, weight loss of 15% or more; Junior two-year old, weight loss of 10% or more; and yearling, weight gain of less than 15%.
Each bull will be transferred to buyer at seller’s expense.
All bulls have been tested and cleared for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) Persistently Infected (PI). Also, this year continues the requirement of Johne’s Disease Testing. Bulls in the sale will need to do one of the following two items: (1) The dam of the bull consigned must test negative for Johne’s disease, OR if the dam is not available, 30 second lactation or later cows must be tested. (2) Originate from a herd that is Level 1 or higher of the Voluntary Johne’s Certification Program. Brucellosis testing is not required. Documentation of previous vaccinations will be provided to the new owner.

EPDs offer the producer the best predictor of genetic value of a bull. The EPD combines a bull’s individual performance with that of his ancestors and related progeny into a single estimate of how a bull’s progeny should perform compared to the average of his breed. The accuracy level is dependent upon the amount of performance information available to make the estimate. Research studies have shown an EPD to be up to six times more accurate in predicting progeny performance than adjusted weights. EPDs are within breed comparisons; producers should not compare the EPD values across breeds.
Actual EPD Percentile Rankings for Production Traits
Since 1990, EPD Group Rankings have been provided on all bulls. This concept ranks bulls within a breed for a similar birth year. Since the 2003 IPT Bull Sale the ACTUAL PERCENTILE RANKING from 01 to 99 will be provided on the production traits. The important thing when evaluating EPDs is to emphasize those traits that you would like to improve in your herd. Selecting a bull to be used on first calf heifers will have different EPDs than one to be used as a terminal sire with all offspring going to market. Thus, you must spend as much or more time evaluating your own herd’s strong points and deficiencies prior to considering which bulls to purchase. To make sure you understand where a bull falls within the various traits and their “Percentile Ranking” the following table is provided:
EPD Percentile Ranking:
The sale order within age division will be determined by a Power Score. The scoring system uses percentile rank for designated economic selection indexes. The score is a rank (ranked #1 is most desirable), LOWER SCORES mean a more genetically desirable bull.
The Power Score (PS) will use the following equation: Simmental PS = (% Rank API + % Rank TI)/2 Angus PS = % Rank for $C Hereford PS = (% Rank BMI + % Rank CHB)/2 EPD definitions can be found online, www.iptbullsale.com.
The Sale Management and personnel of University of Illinois Extension assume no guarantee on any animal or settlement made between buyer and seller of an animal.

Production, Maternal, and Carcass EPDs are listed for all breeds. Indices are breed specific. EPDs printed in the catalog, as of January 19th, should only be compared within breed as they are not representative of an acrossbreed EPD.
PRODUCTION EPDS
CE/CED (Calving Ease Direct): Predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease.
BW/Brth (Birth Weight): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
WW (Weaning Weight): Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
YW (Yearling Weight): EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
SC (Scrotal Circumference): EPD expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
MATERNAL EPDS
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Milk (Maternal Milk): A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
CARCASS EPDS
Marb (Marbling): Expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
RE/REA (Ribeye Area): EPD expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$M (Maternal Weaned Calf Value): An index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation.
$B (Beef Value): A terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid.
$C (Combined Value): An index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.
API (All Purpose Index): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
TI (Terminal Index): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. Evaluates sires for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold under grade and yield.
Black Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) – This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows.
Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) – a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows where all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase.
