From the President

I would like to open this column by thanking some individuals for the time and service they have given to the Red Poll breed recently. Initially I would like to thank Linda Rager Hampton and Bob Carson for their recent service on the Red Poll Board, and additionally I would like to thank James Campbell for his service as well. James resigned from the national board to dedicate more time to the Western States Association. I wish Mr. Campbell much success, and I hope if he and others involved in regional associations would contact me if I may be of assistance.

Dan Womelsdorf was elected by the Board of Directors to serve out the balance of Mr. Campbell’s term. Another individual I would like to thank is Dan Schmiesing.

Dan has given many hours of service to the breed in numerous capacities over the years, most recently as president. Dan still has another year on his term, but hopefully the time demands will not be as great. All of these individuals have sacrificed time and at times their own money to support this breed over the years.

The Red Poll breed of cattle is capable of adapting and excelling in numerous environments across our nation. Whether asked to perform in forage only situations in the Southeast and west of the Mississippi, or grain based finishing in the Midwest our cattle have performed. Our job is to quantify these successes and present them to prospective breeders so that they will see these cattle are not only a pleasure to raise, but most importantly they will turn a profit. All cattlemen are small business owners and in the end must turn a profit. I personally am going to be entering animals in programs to generate data to prove the profit potential of this breed, and I would like to encourage you to find ways to do so with your cattle as well. We currently have individuals who have a multitude of data on their cattle. It is my hope that if we can combine the existing data with contemporary numbers we will be able to show that our cattle can compete with any other breed in the only place that counts, the bottom line.

I would like to let each and every one of you know that you are needed. Whether you are a breeder of registered cattle, a commercial cattleman who likes some Red Poll in your herd, or a parent who has a few head for the family to show, you matter.

We are a small breed with big potential and if we can work together the possibilities are limitless. We all have our own ideas of how to breed and which production system is best, but we are all on the Red Poll team. I was at a state political rally once and heard a U.S. Senator say that during the primary season his party sounded like a “cat in heat” with all the scratching and clawing, but during the general election they just had more kittens (wins). If we all work together our kittens will be registrations and new breeders, and inevitably dollars. Hope you have a profitable new year.

A Message from the Secretary This will be my last issue of the Red Poll Beef Journal as your Executive Secretary.

I have submitted my resignation to the Board effective March 31 or when they hire my replacement, whichever comes first. I will be working with the board to make the transition to the new secretary as smooth as possible.

This was a very difficult decision to make. My family business has increased this past year and our own cattle herd has doubled through a partnership we have entered into. With those two things, it has become increasingly difficult for me to put my attention to ARPA the way it should be done.

I have enjoyed my time with ARPA and getting to know each of the members. I will still see several of your at the North American and Kentucky Beef Expo and I look forward to seeing the progress the Red Polls have in the next few years. Best wishes to each of you!

The 2018 Kentucky Farm Bureau Beef Expo will be held on March 2 and 3 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

What in the World is Red Poll Plus???

In short, a Red Poll Plus has Red Poll in it plus some other breed or breeds. It is a Red Poll crossbred animal.

At the most recent Annual meeting of the American Red Poll Association (ARPA), a change was proposed and voted in by the membership to change the name of the Appendix Registry Program to the Red Poll Plus Registry Program (RPP). This name change was proposed to help increase the marketability of the animals through the use of positive wording. As those in advertising can tell you, phrasing something in the correct way can mean all the difference in getting the consumer to consider your product over the competition.

As many Red Poll breeders are aware, we have had an Appendix Registry program within ARPA since the 1990’s. This program has allowed cattle to be registered that are less than 100% Red Poll. One of the reasons for this Appendix program was to help promote the use of Red Polls in commercial herds. We have simply changed the name of the existing program for increased marketability. The registration papers will clearly identify these animals as not being 100% Red Poll and will list their actual blood percentage on the paper.

In response to some queries by concerned parties, we would like to make it

clear that this program is in no way designed to replace full blood Red Polls nor is it for the abandonment of the genetic purity of our breed.

Our genetic purity is something that we hold in the highest regard.

In reality, if demand for RPP increases, it would in turn increase the demand for full blood cattle as they are needed to continue to create the RPP cattle.

For the economists among us, what happens to the price when the demand increases? The RPP program is not intended to replace anything. It is a means to an end of providing what the commercial breeder is asking for and it provides another way to get our Red Poll genetics into commercial herds.

Why register crossbred cattle?

Some breeders of RPP want the ability to track the pedigree of their animals using a Red Poll base but want to take advantage of the heterosis afforded in crossing with another breed. Some commercial

buyers like to have the registration papers as it is proof that the cattle are what the seller says they are.

ARPA is simply aiding them in tracking their pedigree thru the use of the Red Poll Plus program.

Note that the more cattle that get registered, the more revenue that is generated by ARPA and these funds can in turn be used for the promotion of our great Red Poll breed.

This is a WIN, WIN, WIN. It is a WIN for the full blood breeder as it promotes the use of Red Poll cattle and the use of full bloods to obtain them.

It is a WIN for the commercial breeder as it provides what the customer is asking for.

It is a WIN for ARPA as it generates more income.

NVESTING IN A HERD SIRE

“Looking at the old rules of thumb from over the years that state “2 times the value of a fat steer” or “4 to 5 times the value of a feeder calf”. These are both common measures used by old timers to determine the value of a bull. Testing these figures with historical prices from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale and prices paid for feeders and fats from National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). As it turns out, using values from 1996 to 2014, the average bull price was 4 times the value of a feeder calf and 2.1 times the value of a fat steer. Looks like those old rules of thumb work pretty well.

Using these multipliers, we can speculate to the average price of bulls this coming sale season.

Looking at recent market reports, 500 lb. feeder calves are bringing $1.50 or more. Thus, value of a 5-weight feeder calf is conservatively $750.

History tells us 4 times that value will get us close to the average. Thus 4 x $750 = $3000 for an average bull price.

A conservative price for fat steers weighing 1300 lb. is $1.10. Therefore, the math tells us a fat steer values out at nearly $1430. The previously stated multiplier of 2.1 times the value of a fat steer would also yield an average bull price of $3000. Worth noting again, that these are average prices.

When selecting your next herd sire, identify the traits that can add dollars to your operation. Do not sacrifice functionality, structural soundness, docility, and other traits that can affect longevity. View purchasing a bull as an investment and treat it as such. Investing in a good bull that can improve profitable traits in your herd can allow your farm to be more competitive no matter the market dynamic.

Bottom-line, bulls are a significant contributor to profit or loss in your cattle herd. They have an impact now and for years to come if you

are retaining replacement females.

Look for traits that hold value in your market. Find a bull that can inject those traits. The “expense” of a bull can be a great investment in the future of your cattle herd.

The initial investment of a bull in today’s market may seem staggering, but it is an investment that adds immediate value to the herd working forward.

PUREBRED FACTOR While the above calculations are mostly directed toward the commercial producer, it should be noted that when considering a cattle operation of registered stock, more consideration should be put onto conformation and specific breed traits. With this in mind, the above $ amounts should be considered at the bottom of the range for a top quality herd sire.

CUTTING COSTS? For many cow-calf producers, cutting costs has become a matter of survival. However, when it comes to the bottom line, lower costs will get you only halfway. You must also increase the performance of and add value to your calf crop to stay competitive. Because 80 percent of herd improvement is directly attributable to bull selection, determining what you can pay for a bull depends on finding more than the lowest price.

The bottom line is that if someone tried to give you an average bull, you still would be better off paying over $3,500 for that top quality bull.

In reality, when you try to put economic parameters to EPDs with today’s prices and feed costs, the better argument is that there should be more price spread on bulls than there actually is. As is the case with the commercial marketplace, it appears the higher-priced bulls are actually under-valued, while the lower-priced animals are overvalued.

What does this mean? It means that the best bulls, selling at the higher prices are still selling too cheap based on their value to your herd and the lesser bulls selling for the lower prices are being sold too high, again based on their lack of adding value to your herd. You are directly lessening the progress and value of your herd by letting the good ones go and settling for a cheaper model.

With the recent recession in cattle prices, it is natural to start looking for ways to reduce input costs for the enterprise. However, poorly justified or haphazard budget cuts often begin with the bull battery. I cannot stress enough the value in optimizing your marketing goals through improved male genetics, regardless of cost.

With bulls representing 50 percent of the genetics of the program, you cannot afford to give up genetic progress in your herd at the expense of “cheap” bulls that do not match or advance your production goals.

Four Farms Rolled Into One purchased stock before turning out.

Both pastures can be seen from the house and shop. In addition to good pastures, this farm features a barn with ties and stalls. Big Sandy can be considered the home farm.

Forty minutes south of Big Sandy is the farm at Holladay where Jan grew up. This 150 acre farm is mostly timber but includes 12 acres of good pasture. The bull DZ Cherokee Jack stays at Holiday.

Seven to twelve cows can graze here in summer.

Land is often the biggest obstacle to beginning or expanding a livestock operation. Land is expensive. In addition, much of what is for sale or lease are small acreages with fences down. The question becomes how can you put together what’s available and raise cattle? At Belyew Red Poll Cattle, Jan and Edsel Belyew have come up with a novel system of managing the four farms which make up their operation.

Both Edsel and Jan had some land come to them from their respective families. Currently, they live on a farm in Big Sandy Tennessee which was part of a larger farm owned

by Edsel’s father. This farm has a 22 acre pasture which is home to their newest bull HF902-2-4. A four acre pasture behind the house is a convenient place to quarantine

The total number of cattle varies quite a bit from month to month because groups of calves six to seven months old are weaned before sale. Also, heifer calves are retained or sold either as replacements or stockers. The four farms support about 50 cows, 3 bulls and young stock. A forage based operation in Tennessee which cuts its own hay usually needs 2 acres per cow calf pair if grasslands are well managed.

Creek. The forty acre pasture overlooks Kentucky Lake and is considered by Edsel to be their best pasture. No bull is kept on this farm so pasture is available to weanlings as well as bred cows.

In addition to owned acreage, 40 acres of grassland is leased on Bain Road west of Big Sandy. A third bull Glenn’s Powerhouse Lancelot lives on this farm. All together, the farms total 118 acres of grass.

Managing calving season among four disparate farms is a challenge. Jan

by Regan Logan and Edsel have found that a breeding plan which results in calves being born in small groups, a few at a time, works best. Heifers and cows are brought to the farm at Big Sandy prior to calving so they can be monitored.

The barn is available in case of bad weather. About 30 days after calving, pairs are taken in groups of 3 to 7 to the bulls on their respective farms.

Frame and genetics determine which cows go to which bulls. Once cows become pregnant, they can be moved as necessary to manage forage. Most of the year there are groups of cattle out with the bulls and rotating through the calving pens at Big Sandy Farm.

Each farm also has stored hay and a tractor. This may seem like a lot of infrastructure but appropriate facilities mean that cattle have their health and nutritional needs met no matter the weather. Its also easier to move cattle to take advantage of growing grass because pens are available for sorting and loading.

The first key to success at Belyew Red Poll Cattle is plain old organization and record keeping.

Excel spread sheets are used to track breeding and calving. Each bull has a spread sheet. Information related to the breeding plan is listed in columns for each bull. The tag numbers of cattle turned in, date they were turned in, and due date are tabulated. Due dates are calculated by adding 285 days to the date the cows or heifers were turned in with the bull. Most of the cows calve within 30 days of their calculated due dates. Due dates are also color coded. For example, all the due dates highlighted in purple will be calving around the same time. Jan also keeps a running journal on her computer. Each days events are listed. Information in the journal includes items such as calvings, cattle moved, purchases, sales, treatments given and vet visits.

Looking at the spread sheets and journal makes it much easier to keep an eye on calvings coming up, to vaccinate calves at the right age and do all those chores necessary for herd health.

News from the Board During the National Sale and Meeting in Murray Kentucky, the 2016-2017 Board of Directors worked on improving the Rules and Regulations for the ARPA breeders as well as addressing questions by the membership.

After the National Meeting, the new ARPA Board of Directors hit the ground running. The Board elected new officers, naming Mike Reed as the President. The new President also started working with the board to form committees to start the new year.

The National Sale Committee has also started working on the 74th American Red Poll National Meeting and Sale.

Banquet Honors Breeders The National Banquet was held on Friday, September 29 at the Spring Hill Suites.

After enjoying a meal and fellowship, several breeders were honored with prestigious awards.

Mike Reed of Kentucky was presented the Promoter of the Year award for his work with the Southern States Association as well as his personal contact with the members.

Cattle were sold into 7 states with the states being Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Arkansas, and Kansas.

Gail Spegal was presented the Service Award in honor of his many years of service not only to the breed but also to the Association.

National Meeting Report

John Rager was presented the Lifetime Achievement award in honor of his work in the association as well as with his cattle, the breed, and the beef industry.

The American Red Poll Association held their 73rd National Red Poll Meeting September 29, 2017 at the William Cherry Expo Center at Murray State University in Murray Kentucky.

Members voted on changes to the ARAP Bylaws. In addition, the members elected new members of the board. Chet Miller, Mike Reed, and Jim Jackson were all elected to the American Red Polls Board of Directors.

The Junior American Red Poll News Stop Juniors Took Home the Purple at NAILE During the 108th National American Red Poll Show, the Red Poll Juniors made a fabulous showing, taking home the purple banners in the female show.

McCall Receives Stonebrook Farms Scholarship Jeffrey McCall of Crestwood, Kentucky has been awarded the 2017 Stonebrook Farms Scholarship for $500.00 provided by the Raines Family in memory of Glenn and Chris Raines.

Jeff is a student at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies with an emphasis in soil science.

Jeff has been working with Red Poll cattle with his brother, David, since 2005. He has exhibited in county, state and national shows for the past 10 years. He expressed “Showing Red Polls helped me learn to be more responsible at a young age that continues to benefit me in college.”

Throughout his life, Jeff has received numerous awards and recognition. He is an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow Boy Scout Honor Society, Valedictorian, AP Scholar with Honor, Dean’s List at UK, Elaine Gould Memorial Percussion Award, conservation scholarship and UK School of Music grant. He is a member of the Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society.

As a UK Study Abroad in Costa Rica participant, he studied sustainable agriculture, ecotourim, climate change and energy policy. He uses his research skills in assisting his agricultural professors. His goal is to enter into the field of environmental research following graduation.

Plans are in full swing for the 2018 Junior Preview Show hosted by the Spegal Family. The weekend will included the cattle show, fun activities, banquet and special events. We invite all our American Red Poll Association members and guests to attend. All Junior members will receive a packet with entry forms, schedule and contest applications by the first of May.
