Welcome to the Halfmann-Beckton Red Angus Sale!

Dear Friends,

What an incredible time to be in the beef cattle business, especially for the cow/calf sector. While we're still praying for rain, both our moisture and feed situation are much better than last year. While that's not true for everyone, it is the case over a large part of the southern plains. Better yet, we are heading into fall with historically good prices for both feeder calves and fed cattle. Just last month at Superior's Video Royale, yearlings were routinely fetching over $2,100 per head and we saw some weaned heifer calves bringing $1700-1800 on a per head basis.

As we approach our 60th year in the Red Angus business, we - like our cowherd - have become increasingly adaptable to change. But 2023 marks one of our biggest changes to date when we made the decision to move our bull development back to our headquarters. This puts our eyes on the bulls every day and now we are designing our own high roughage ration to ensure ideal rumen health and sound foot structure. Next, we invested in equipment to collect individual animal dry matter intake (DMI), which allows us to identify animals that more efficiently convert feed into pay weight. Our bulls will sell with feed efficiency EPDs, which are expressed as F:G (Feed:Gain). In addition to impacting conversion in the feedlot, intake impacts cow herd profitability through it's impact on stocking rate and cow herd maintenance costs.

Another change Halfmann sale veterans will notice is the extent to which we've stepped up our game in quality grade. The average Halfmann Red Angus bull we'll offer in our October 4th sale ranks in the top 15% of all Red Angus for marbling and there are many in the top 1-5%. With prime carcass premiums easily topping $200 per head, we're making sure our genetics come with bred-in earning power. Even if you sell your calves at weaning, they'll be worth more sired by bulls with documented carcass merit.

Finally, to simplify the selection process for our customers, we've joined the $Profit-share team, which gives our customers access to the most meaningful economic selection indexes in the beef industry. $Profit values the positive impact of revenue traits such as: fertiity, marbling, weaning weight, gain, and others against the expense generated by traits like: post-weaning feed intake, mature cow size and cow herd feed intake.

Feeding

Please arrange to pick up or receive your purchases. Halfmann Ranch will begin shipping on the Monday following the sale. We will hold cattle if needed for 10 days following the sale. Afterwards, purchased cattle will be assessed for feed at $5/head/day.

Absentee Bids

If you are unable to attend the sale, we can help you select the bulls or females to fit your needs. We guarantee Sight Unseen Purchase Satisfaction. Contact us or one of the livestock representatives before the sale. Your bid will be handled confidentially.

Herd Health

We have a comprehensive herd-wide health program which includes vaccinations for 7-Way, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Lepto, and Ivermectin. All heifers are also vaccinated for bangs and vibrio. The sale bulls have been Trich tested. All Halfmann animals have been tested negative for BVD PI. All the bulls will have a general health and fertility examination prior to sale day. Breeding information will be available on a supplement sheet. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal in accordance with Federal Regulations. International Buyers: it will be the responsibility of the buyer to cover the costs of any testing required for export outside of the United States.

- All other states (Continental U.S.) = $495/bull

• Buyers whose bull purchases total $18,000 or greater will receive FREE DELIVERY to central points within the continental US.

• Buyers who haul their own animals on sale day can deduct $100 per bull from their purchases.

Developed for operations that raise their own replacements and retains ownership on steers and cull heifers, which are marketed on a Quality Based Grid.

$Profit assumes a bull will sire 100 progeny over his useful lifespan.

$Profit Combines all the traits that comprise both $Ranch and $Feeder to yield one number that predicts Ranchers' Bottom Lines.

$Profit Example:

• Bull A has a $Profit of $15,000

• Bull B has a $Profit of $10,000

= We would expect Bull "A" to produce an additonal $5000 of profit to the ranch over his service life ($50 per calf x 100 calves) when compared to Bull "B".

Multi-generational use of $Profit will move both $Ranch and $Feeder in a positive direction, just not as fast as the singular use of $Ranch of $Feeder.

FERT(CowFertility)

Predicts differences in the number of calves produced by bulls' daughters by the time they reach the age of 8 years. Daughters from a bull with a 2.0 FERT EPD would be expected to produce on average - one more calf by the time they reach 8 years of age than daughters from a bull with a 1.0 FERT EPD.

GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase. Expressed as dollars per head, GM assumes all progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based grid. Traits included in GM include ADG, CW, Dry Matter Intake (DMI), MARB, Back Fat and REA.

Profit...Select

$Ranch

Developed for cow/calf producers who retain their own replacements and market 100% of the steer calves and cull heifers after weaning.

Traits included in $Ranch: Fertility, Milk, Weaning Growth, Cow Herd Feed Intake and Mature Cow Size

$Ranch Example:

• Bull A has a $Ranch of $80

• Bull B has a $Ranch of $40

= We would expect Bull "A" to produce $40 per head increased profit when compared to bull "B" in a cow/calf operation that raised their own replacements and sold all other calves at weaning.

Multi-generational use of $Ranch will ultimately result in: moderation in mature cow size, improved fertility, modest gains in weaning weight, improved stocking rates and ultimately - increased pounds of calf harvested per unit of feed/land resource.

$Feeder

Developed to compare how bulls will impact profitability in the post-weaning phase (weaning to harvest).

Traits included in $Feeder: Feed Intake, Post-Weaning Gain, Carcass Weight, Quality Grade (Marbling), Yield Grade

$Feeder Example:

• Bull A has a $Feeder of $100

• Bull B has a $Feeder of $150

= We would expect calves sired by Bull "B" to earn $50 per head increaded profit between weaning and harvest when compared to calves sired by bull "A".

Use of $Feeder in sire selection will maximize Feedlot Closeouts, but with no regard for the cow herd. Thus $Feeder should be used by herds that purchase their replacement females.

New in 2023 FERTILITY EPD

The Fertility EPD (FERT) predicts differences in the calf crop percentage expected from a bull’s daughters! High Fertility EPD bulls will build cow herds with consistently better breed back and deliver a higher percentage of calves to the weaning pen.

Higher Fertility also lowers cow herd culling requirements which reduces replacement rates; which in turn reduces cow herd depreciation costs and provides a larger percentage of the heifer calves that can be sold. As you would imagine, these more desirable outcomes drive HUGE differences in profitability, so the Fertility EPD has tremendous impact on $Profit and $Ranch.

The Sale Catalog Data Explanation on the top of page 6 shows where the FERT EPD is presented in the sale catalog. The example below is useful for better understanding the trait units of the FERT EPD.

1. The producer contacts the Red Angus Association of America at (940) 226-4762 and answers a short supplier enrollment questionnaire over the phone. RAAA staff will ask general management, animal identification and breeding questions. If needed, the producer may be asked to supply additional documentation on breeding such as semen receipt, lease agreements or information on purchased females.

2. After all documentation is recorded, staff will ship the tags directly to the producer who must tag the calves before they leave the ranch of origin – birth, branding, preconditioning, weaning or before loading on the semi.

3. The producer will receive a customer enrollment agreement to fill out and return to RAAA with a copy of their calving records.

4. Staff will issue the USDAapproved Certificate of Compliance upon receiving the customer enrollment agreement and calving record.

BIDDING DISPUTES

The Auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final.

TERMS

Terms of sale are cash. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released.

PURCHASER’S RISK

Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold. Insurance will be available sale day.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY

A certificate of registry will be furnished to the Buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Changes or errors in the information contained in this catalog relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence over printed matter in the catalog.

BREEDING GUARANTEE

All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the Seller. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the purchaser may return the animal to the ranch of the seller if in good condition, free of disease, and complying with the health requirements of the Seller’s state. The Seller will be entitled to six months trial following the return of the animal in which to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months, the Seller shall be obligated, at his option, to refund the purchase price, replace the animal with another of equal value, or grant the buyer credit for use on cattle marketed by the seller. The return of the full purchase price shall, in any case, be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. If the Seller proved the animal to be a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the purchaser to take delivery of the animal at the purchaser’s expense. All animals are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of a) calves under twelve months of age; or b) animals shown by Purchaser after sale; or c) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the Purchaser.

SELLER’S SEMEN RIGHTS

Seller keeps a 50% revenue-sharing breeding interest without possession, in every bull in this catalog unless otherwise noted in this catalog or in the sale day supplement. In the event Seller elects to collect semen from a designated bull, it will be done at Seller’s expense and during such time when purchaser is not using the bull for breeding.

Future semen collections of the bull must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. These collections and costs will be divided according to each owner’s interest unless otherwise agreed upon mutually by all owners.

LIABILITY

Neither owners, sale managers, clerks nor anyone connected with the sale assumes responsibility, legal or otherwise, for damage of any kind.

CONTRACT

The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.

IMPLIED WARRANTY

Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there are no warranties or implies, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction. The warranties set forth in the terms and conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies provided therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any party claiming through the buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided and all other obligations or liabilities.
