Welcome!

My wife, Deandra, and I would like to welcome you to our 7th annual Rousey SimAngus Bull Sale! This business is not just a business, it’s an obsession for me. Depending on the time of year that obsession probably approaches unhealthy levels but fortunately, my family is supportive of my cattle habit and share in my dedication to breed better cattle that can go out and benefit other hard-working families in this industry. Breeding higher quality cattle that are problem free is a 365-day project for us and we continue to sort, cull, and select relentlessly to present you with a high-quality product. Perfection is likely unattainable but we will darn sure try!

As we assembled the data for this year’s offering it was very gratifying to see these pedigrees come together and see bulls that sold thru past sales influence the current generation. On the same note, cows that have proven themselves here are beginning to show up on both the top and bottom sides of the pedigree of some of the most impressive individuals in the offering. Our replacement heifer pen is the most impressive that it’s ever been. Unique matings and pedigrees are coming down the pipeline as well as plans to continue to incorporate our own bulls back into the program so the future has never been so exciting here.

The beef industry has enjoyed a stellar year with the drought mostly nonexistent, cheaper feed prices, and calf sales that reached record levels at most auction barns across the country. Fundamentally, the next few years should look pretty good if you have cattle in inventory. Whether you are rebuilding a cowherd or advancing your current one, there is one thing that I cannot emphasize enough and that’s the value of Heterosis to the commercial cattleman!

My personal philosophy has been to breed cattle with “Practicality, Functionality, and Heterosis” in mind. We invite you to read what this means to us as outlined on page 4 in this catalog, but basically can be summed up as taking a no nonsense, balanced trait approach to breeding cattle that fit your own personal environmental parameters. This sets us up to be profitable in the good years and weather the storms of the downturns.

We are thankful for your interest in our program and look forward to working with you. Please feel free to stop by the ranch and take a look at the sale offering prior to the sale. We will again be utilizing DVAuction if for any reason you are not able to attend and of course the videos will be available for viewing as well. We look forward to seeing you on sale day!

Sincerely,

Tyrell Rousey

PRACTICALITY FUNCTIONALITY Heterosis

PRACTICALITY

When thinking about practicality in terms of raising beef cattle we consider a balanced trait, no-nonsense approach that takes into consideration cow sense, cowboy logic, sound science, individual resources, and an understanding of cause and effect. It’s natural human behavior to continually want to raise the bar but more times than not it comes at the expense of something else. Genomics, EPD’s, Indexes, and Phenotypes, are all very valid and useful tools we have at our disposal and certainly tools we use here on the ranch. Unfortunately, problems arise when these tools are taken and pushed to extremes or used singularly rather than in a balanced approach that takes into consideration a ranch’s given resources and what is functional and profitable. Practicality and common sense will never get you into trouble.

FUNCTIONALITY

PRACTICALITY. FUNCTIONALITY.

HETEROSIS. These three words represent the objectives and core values of the Rousey SimAngus breeding program. While each has a different meaning they all three are very cohesive in nature and blend themselves to produce real world, problem free, no-nonsense cattle that are productive and profitable through all sectors of the beef industry.

Functionality as we define it and will outline below is an absolute must in our program and is honestly something I really feel the Seedstock industry has lost sight of while chasing EPD’s and Genomics. While some may label them as convenience traits I fully see the following as necessary traits: structural soundness including feet and legs, fleshing ability, appropriate mature cow size, sound teat and udder quality, and mothering ability. None of us have the extra time, money, and labor resources to deal with problem cattle. Cattle that require added feed to stay in adequate condition cost money. Cattle that require antibiotic treatments as a result of poor immunity caused by insufficient colostrum consumption due to big teats and poor udders cost money. Cattle with poor structure or bad feet don’t have longevity and cost money. During the spring calving blizzard, the cow that doesn’t get her calf up and moving costs money and the silly cow that won’t mother up and follow the calf sled to the barn costs time and money. I assure you Functionality will remain a top priority in our herd and we will continue to select and cull hard for these traits.

HETEROSIS

Heterosis is one of the easiest, lowest cost tools that a commercial cattle producer can utilize to improve the profitability of their operation. Countless bodies of research have documented the advantages of the composite female and include greater calf survivability, increased fertility and longevity, and more total pounds of calf weaned over the course of a cow’s lifetime. Simmental and Angus/Red Angus complement each other so perfectly and it’s no surprise that the SimAngus steer has become one of the most sought after animals in the feeding sector as well. Using SimAngus bulls on SimAngus cows is an easy way to manage and maintain an advantageous level of heterosis in a cowherd.

The VALUE of HETEROSIS

The adage “Our breed can do it all” has — and may continue to be — pressed by some breed association representatives and certainly some seedstock producers. This concept alone is false and in some small way can be attributed to holding back the beef industry and more importantly the commercial cattle producers. Not a single breed by itself can capture heterosis.

The economic stability of commercial producers is of great importance, and continuing to push singular breed usage is a detriment to farm and ranch longevity at all levels. The value of heterosis is a reduction of production costs, an increase in animal performance and efficiency, an increase in

crossbred animal relative to the average performance of its straightbred parents. Research has shown time and time again that crossbreeding results in calves that are far superior to their straightbred counterparts.

There are two reasons for the resulting boost in performance from crossbreeding:

1 Increasing the level of heterozygosity across the genome lessens the effect of gene dominance for diminished performance i.e., hybrid vigor, and

2 an increased use of breed complementarity of parent breeds i.e., maternal line and terminal line. In the beef industry, the effect of direct heterosis on calf performance has been documented. An example of this is if you mate a straightbred parent where

the average weaning weight is 550 to another straightbred parent where the average weaning weight is 500. The average weaning performance of those calves is 546. That is 21 pounds heavier than the average of the parent performance.

It’s clear the benefit of heterosis results in improved performance across an array of economically relevant traits, but perhaps even more important is the compounded production advantage through crossbred females. The largest economic impact crossbreeding yields is through maternal heterosis and crossbred females.

Would you find it valuable to have females produce 600 pounds more weaning weight and last over a year longer on average than straightbred females? Crossbred females make more money. Period.

“Crossbred females make more money. PERIOD. ”

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences EPDs: EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units. Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed.

Calving Ease CE: Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers

Birth Weight BW: Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Weaning Weight WW: Pounds of Weaning Weight

Yearling Weight YW: Pounds of Yearling Weight

Milk Milk: Pounds of Weaning Weight due to milk

Stayability STAY: Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Marbling Marb.: Predicts the average difference Marbling score

Rib-Eye Area REA Predicts the average difference in square inches of Ribeye

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line.

All-Purpose Index API: Evaluates sires for use

on the entire cow herd bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index TI: Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years $50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

ASA

HYBRID BREED AVERAGES

We were enrolled in the Calf Crop Genomics program, meaning all bulls sell with Genomically Enhanced EPD’s and Parental Verification.

Genomic testing is a cost-effective and quick way to add information to what is known about an animal’s genetic potential. One way to think of the information gained is by asking how many progeny would this animal need to see a similar increase in the accuracy of the EPD for that trait? These are referred to as progeny equivalents. Typically, EPD’s on yearling bulls are of very low accuracy and are essentially pedigree estimates. Below are the progeny equivalents as of spring 2020. The way to interpret progeny equivalents is like adding over 25 calving ease records, 22 birth weights on progeny, etc. In other words, while a bull calf is still nursing, breeders can know an equivalent of 15 stayability records

on his daughters - something that would take years to generate through progeny testing.

ADDING A GENOMIC TEST IS LIKE ADDING

• 25+ Calving Ease Scores

• 22 Birth Weights

• 25+ Weaning Weights

• 25+ Yearling Weights

• 8 Marbling Scores

• 6 Ribeye Measurements

• 15 Stayability Records

Bottom line is that the EPD’s provided on our bulls are more valuable than in years past because they come with greater accuracy to allow you to make more informed decisions!

Diligence is a tremendous purebred option that combines phenotype and genotype to a very high degree! He possesses a great foot structure and skeletal integrity with a quiet disposition and modern EPD profile. We are very pleased with his progeny in our program as he did a great job of adding pounds and power without adding excessive frame. Daughters are stout made, moderate framed, and broody. His sons are stout made, muscular, and masculine featured. Diligence ranks among the elite for adding pounds ranking in the Top 1% for WW and YW EPD’s. He ranks in the Top 30% for Stayability EPD and Top 3% for Docility EPD, and Top 20% for Marbling EPD. His Indexes check the boxes as well, ranking in the Top 20% for API and Top 3% for TI.

The Simmental Advantage

“A study from the US Meat Animal Research Center USMARC in Clay Center, Nebraska, shows that Simmental-sired calves have a slight advantage in weaning weight over Angus-sired calves, yet mature cow counterparts weigh in at 74 pounds lighter than those sired by Angus bulls. This indicates that growth and efficiency don’t have to be mutually exclusiveSimmental genetics prove they can deliver both.”

“The key is having an effective breeding strategy. For commercial cow-calf producers, crossbreeding is virtually non-negotiable. Heterosis doesn’t just boost weaning weights by 10%- it increases cow lifetime production by an impressive 23%.

That’s a massive advantage for long-term profitability, giving ranchers more pounds of calf over a cow’s career without ballooning input costs.”

She is a modest sized, very feminine cow with impeccable foot quality and structure with superb teat size and great udder. She has never missed a beat and has conceived first service AI her entire career and was never taken out of production to flush. She has made it onto my camara roll multiple times throughout her career, not as an over fat donor cow but as a hard-working ranch cow out in the Sandhills of Nebraska working her ass off with a huge calf standing at side. Her pedigree traces back to the first Simmental cow that I ever owned and consists of multiple generations of cows since by sires that made the fertile long-lived kind that just flat out worked in our program. We collected her son Rousey Invision who has progeny within this sale and plan to utilize Lot 15 in the program as well. He does not sacrifice muscle and foot quality and sires easily born progeny that have a square top and are consistently high quality. He reads with a superior EPD tabulation and does not fall below the 35th percentile for 16 of the EPD’s published within the Simmental database. C-Bar Collateral is a member of the Genex lineup and hails from the famous Stony cow family that has produced so many great ones in herds all over the country. He is a calving ease sire with shape, strength of top, and eye appeal. His first progeny have been tremendously consistent with great type and design. His daughters are very feminine headed and look to be replicas of Collateral’s beautiful dam. As bred heifers they look tremendous and his first daughters will have calved by sale day. He ranks in the Top 15% for both CE and low BW and well as Maternal Calving Ease. Also ranks in the top 20% for Stayability and Top 40% for Marbling EPD.
