Connection

Some exciting news to start this year is our new employee, Kashanna Monroe. She has been a wonderful addition to our staff, and we look forward to the year to come in serving the association’s membership. She brings office experience that will be an asset to the association.

In this issue, we are featuring our All-American and Bell Ringer winners. It was a great year for quality cattle and showing to bring forward these distinguished animals. I know I look forward to seeing what this year will bring in the showring. A correction from the January/February issue on the number of All-American nominations awarded to Fairdale Farms. Fairdale Farms had 4 ½ nominations.

Another feature of this issue is our National Convention, hosted by the Iowa Brown Swiss Association. From what I have discussed and seen from this host state, we should have an eventful convention, and I encourage you all to attend. Iowa features several farm tours, as well as the National Sale and National Heifer Show. In the coming months, you will receive packets from the national office with information and registration for the convention. There will be several exciting activities for the youth as well.

A coming change to look for is the addition of another genetic condition that the association will be publishing on pedigrees. BH6 is a recessive lethal haplotype in Brown Swiss cattle, mapped to chromosome 2, that causes embryonic mortality, resulting in homozygous deficiency.

BSCBA Mission Statement

To promote and expand the Brown Swiss breed with programs that assist the membership and industry to compete favorably in the market place now and in the future.

This defect reduces fertility and requires management through genomic testing. This mutation leads to high rates of embryonic death, acting as a “lethal haplotype” when inherited from both parents. More information on this genetic condition will be provided as we get closer to publishing.

Additionally, I would encourage everyone to make sure they are checking DHIA records and the identification of animals they are testing. Some of the most common issues are the identification number, breed, birthdate, sire, and dam listed with DHIA. If these issues are not corrected, it will lead to issues when genomic testing animals and the data flow that impacts our genetic evaluations. Please be sure to check all of your records to ensure you do not experience issues. The office is always available to help with issues and questions. Collaborating on data flow is a vital aspect of ensuring the success of our genetic evaluations, and I encourage everyone to work towards this goal. We all use the data; why not ensure it is accurate?

Until next time,

“The extra value of Registered cattle can only be realized when they are, in fact, Registered.” We will help you with that process.

P RESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a difference a few weeks can make. We have gone from one of the harshest winters in a decade to one of the warmest springs on record. Of course, severity is relative depending on where you live.

As farmers, we tend to fixate on the weather. It is something everyone can relate to, and it is often the easiest conversation to start. But for those of us in agriculture, the weather is more than small talk. It has a direct impact on our livelihood, and it is entirely out of our control. We work in the elements every day, regardless of the conditions, because that is what it takes to care for our crops and tend to our herds.

As conditions change, we must adapt. As an organization, the Brown Swiss Association USA must do the same.

One of those adjustments is the consolidation of our Bulletin publications. This change is intended to improve the long-term financial sustainability of our magazine. As a result, I will summarize two recent Board meetings instead of just one.

Financially, we closed the year with most budget categories in line with expectations. However, a few one-time, non-budgeted expenses occurred in the final month, which may result in a slight deficit. We will have a clearer picture once our auditor completes the year-end review. Even with this possibility, the Board remains confident that recent structural changes within the office will support a stable budget moving forward. That said, much like on our farms, if costs continue to rise, additional adjustments may be necessary

In other business, the Board clarified and strengthened show rule language related to ultrasound and milk sampling at our national shows for the 2026 season. We also discussed a DHIR-related matter and provided direction moving forward. In addition, we received updates on the upcoming elections, the All-American Contest, and potential options for the World Premier Sale.

On a separate note, I was encouraged by the size and content of our first consolidated issue of the Bulletin. I hope that momentum continues. I know I may sound repetitive, but the Bulletin truly depends on member support, particularly through advertising, to ensure its continued success. The Board has invested significant time and resources into maintaining this publication, but ultimately, its future depends on the membership.

That is all for now. Until our next edition, please continue promoting the Brown Swiss breed.

Sincerely,

STEVEN & SHERRY OUELLETTE

Spring 2026 is going to be an exciting show season! Several qualifying shows are coming up across the country where youth can compete, learn, and meet new people who share their interests.

The first show is the New York Spring Dairy Carousel, happening March 25–30, 2026, in Hamburg, New York. Right after that, from March 31 to April 3, 2026, the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo will be held at the State Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ohio. Later in April, the Northeast All-Breeds Spring Show will take place April 22–25, 2026, in West Springfield, Massachusetts. At the same time, April 24–26, 2026, the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Spring Show will be held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin. These events give Brown Swiss youth a chance to show their cattle, compete for awards, and gain valuable experience in the show ring.

One special opportunity for young people involved in the Brown Swiss breed is the National Brown Swiss Association Youth Lease Program. The program encourages responsibility, character, and knowledge about working with dairy cattle. It also increases participation in junior contests and shows across the country. The program is especially helpful because it allows both farm youth and non-farm youth to work with registered Brown Swiss cattle, giving more students the chance to

kaylenrmiller@gmail.com

get involved even if they don’t own a farm. There are specific rules for the Youth Lease Program. Some revisions have been made to the program. The lessee must be between 8 and 21 years old as of January 1 of the project year, which follows the calendar year. Leased animals qualify for the National Bell Ringer Program, junior contests, and junior show awards. However, they are not eligible for open show awards. Open show recognitions are awarded to the recorded owner of the leased animal.

A youth may lease only one animal per class per year. If someone needs an alternate leadsperson, the form must be turned in to the National office representative by 5:00 p.m. the day before the show. The alternate leadsperson must be a National Brown Swiss Junior Member between the ages of 8 and 21 (not having turned 22 by January 1 of the current year). To be a Junior Member, you must own a Brown Swiss. Leased animals cannot use an alternate leadsperson form, and a separate form must be completed for each animal.

Juniors are also encouraged to get their show heifers ready for the convention. There will be a heifer show to highlight the hard work and dedication of national junior members. Overall, these events and programs hosted by the National Brown Swiss Youth Association give young people the opportunity to grow as leaders, learn more about the dairy industry, and showcase the beautiful Brown Swiss cattle.

2025 All-American Contest

The 2025 All-American Contest brought out the best of the best. There were 147 head and 22 groups entered. From that, the nominations were the next step: 97 individuals and 19 groups were selected to move on to vie for All-American honors. Congratulations to those whose animals will have All-American, Reserve All-American, Honorable Mention, or Nominated All-American added to their pedigrees. As impressive as these accomplishments are, you have to be equally impressed with the records made by these high-type cows. The 9 cows from the 5-Year-Old, Aged Cow, and Component Merit Cow classes are all Ex92 or higher. They average 29,531m 4.4% 1,312f 3.5% 1,026p, which equates to 34,495 lbs. of Energy Corrected Milk!

A family building families Kruses drawn to dependability of Brown Swiss

HOLY CROSS, Iowa — Everything is about family at the home of Kruses LJ Swiss and Kruse Genetics, whether it is the two-legged or the four-legged kind.

The dreams of two generations of the Kruse family call the farm home. Loras and Julie have been breeding their Kruses LJ Swiss herd since 1990, while their son Adam and his wife Alison, along with their children Stella and Stetson, have more recently begun breeding their herd under the banner of Kruse Genetics. Loras and Julie’s other adult children — Debbie, Kristi and Nathan, along with their spouses and families — all continue to be involved, helping out with cropping or other projects and jobs needed on the farm.

The Kruses will welcome visitors to their farm as part of the 2026 National Brown Swiss Convention tours in July.

“Hosting this tour is truly a privilege,” Adam said “We’re proud to open our farm to others and share what we do every day. It’s a chance for Brown Swiss breeders to connect and learn from each other, and celebrate the hard work and dedication that goes into dairy farming.”

The Kruses milk 60XX cows. The herd is primarily Brown Swiss, with a smattering of Jerseys and Holsteins included. The cows are fed a non-TMR diet, based on baleage, corn silage, dry, and grain.

Loras and Julie purchased the farm in 1990. At the time, it was functioning as a beef and hog farm. The young couple renovated the existing barn to tie-stalls and made the first addition to the barn. Another addition was done in 2003, adding 16 additional stalls to make the facility what it is today, with 58 tie-stalls and two box-stalls. Heifers are housed on bedded packs and spend time on pasture once they are confirmed pregnant.

The Brown Swiss cow has won the hearts of the Kruses for being exactly the cow she is: easy to work with, long-lived, and dependable.

“Their calm, easygoing nature makes day-to-day management enjoyable,” Loras said. “They have strong feet and legs, which

adds to their durability and their longevity in the herd. Overall, they are just a dependable, functional cow that fits well with our goals as dairy producers.”

The Kruses strive to breed the kind of cows that fit those goals and ideals, emphasizing on selecting for the type traits that will create cows that mature gracefully with sound feet and legs and great udders With those building blocks of a strong cow in place, the Kruses aim to complete the picture of balance by developing cows that breed back consistently while carrying high component tests.

“We select sires based on milk and positive components,” Adam said. “Our other priorities are udder composites, daughter pregnancy rate, and fertility traits.”

The Kruses’ approach to breeding has been ontarget, with cattle they have bred garnering awards and recognition at the Iowa State Fair, World Dairy Expo, and in the All-American contest.

While the sires selected to mate their herd are an important piece of the puzzle, the Kruses value the importance of the cow and the family behind her.

Their flagship cow family is that of Kruses Ensign Sylvia 3E-92. Sylvia made her mark on the herd as a prolific brood cow, producing 243 embryos in her lifetime. More than half of the Kruses’ Swiss herd traces back to her, on the maternal side.

“Sylvia has stood the test of time for us; her progeny are still excelling today,” Loras said. “She produced eye-appealing heifers that grew into cows who knew how to milk and look good doing it.”

Sylvia’s granddaughter, Kruses LJ Fab Skylar EX91 was a two-time Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at World

Dairy Expo, while garnering Reserve All-American Junior Two-Year-Old honors in 2021 and was named the Honorable Mention All-American Junior Three-Year-Old in 2022.

A grandson of Sylvia also had a great impact on the Kruses’ herd as a sire. Kruses LJ Wonderment Stuart sired 11 Excellent daughters in the herd.

To propel the family farm forward into the future, the Kruses have been working to transition the operation to the next generation.

“We want to continue to breed eye-appealing cows that excel both in the showring and in the bulk tank,” Loras said. “But more importantly, we want to continue transitioning the operation to Adam and Alison and their kids; watching them continue to grow Kruse Genetics, while staying involved as long as we can.”

The desire to continue the farm is mutual, and a responsibility Adam and Alison take seriously.

“Adam and I are committed to staying relevant by embracing the latest technologies and genetics in the industry, growing alongside those advancements,” Alison said.

“Those tools will allow us to continue as the third

generation, strengthening the Kruse legacy that Adam’s grandpa Larry began in 1969.”

While the Kruses are proud of the four-legged families they are building, their pride is even greater in the two-legged family being raised on the farm.

“Raising our family on the farm has been one of the greatest highlights of our dairy farming career,” Loras said. “Being able to work together, day in and day out, while teaching the next generation the value of hard work and dedication has meant everything to us.”

The Kruse family — Loras (left), Julie, Alison, Stella (front) & Adam holding Stetson — stand on their family’s farm March 19 near Holy Cross, Iowa. The Kruses will be welcoming Brown Swiss National Convention attendees to their farm when the convention comes to Iowa in July.

BREEDING COWS THAT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

Fairbanks Family to Welcome National Convention-Goers

ANAMOSA, Iowa - Doug Fairbanks likes to let his cows speak for themselves. He is looking forward to the opportunity for them to do just that when he welcomes National Brown Swiss Convention attendees to his farm in July.

“I’m looking forward to being able to share what we’ve got with other breeders,” Fairbanks said. “I want people to come, see the cows and make their own opinions about what we’re doing. Sure, I’m proud of the cows, but I’d rather just have the cows speak for themselves.”

Fairbanks and his daughter, Abby Rickels, operate Wapsi-Ana Farm near Anamosa, where they milk 400 cows, about 100 of which are Brown Swiss. Doug’s nephew, Josh Fairbanks, works on the farm with the cows, fieldwork, and repairs. Doug’s wife, Jody, teaches school and helps with calf chores and bookwork, while Abby’s husband, Dylan, works off the farm as an engineer. The farm employs several full-time and part-time employees.

The herd is milked in a double-12 parlor and housed in a sandbedded freestall barn built in 2013. The bulk-tank average on the entire herd typically ranges from 85-90 pounds of milk per day, with a 4.4% butterfat and 3.4% protein, on three-time daily milking. The Brown Swiss hold a lactation average of over 25,000 pounds milk.

The farm now consists of 600 acres, which is used to grow forages and feed for the herd, including 400 acres of corn and 150 acres of high-oleic beans that are roasted for protein. The Fairbanks are proud to have raised their four children on

the farm. In 1999, they purchased the farm Doug grew up on, which had previously always been rented, first by his father and then by Doug. Since making the initial purchase of the farm, the Fairbanks have slowly purchased land connecting or adjacent to their farm as it has become available.

“When I finished college, I bought my dad’s cattle, feed, and machinery and started farming,” Fairbanks said. “We’ve worked hard and come a long ways. We’ve been diligent and kept grinding — that’s our strong suit.”

Looking towards the future, Fairbanks has no interest in expanding the herd, but instead looks to find growth in improving on the things they are currently doing, while considering potential paths for transitioning the farm to the next generation.

“That’s my passion — improving the herd, breeding the best animals we can,” Fairbanks said. “I admire and respect the showring, but I don’t have a passion for it. I prefer to invest in cow families that have been successful, where the advertising has been done. I like to stay home, farm and breed cows I like.”

Fairbanks’ affinity for the Brown Swiss breed was born when he was awarded a Brown Swiss calf as part of the ShareA-Heifer program, which he purchased back as a springing heifer.

“My dad just had Holsteins, and I really liked when someone came to the farm and saw the one brown heifer, that she was mine,” Fairbanks said. “She had a few heifer calves for me, and the older I got, the more I grew to really like working with

the breed. The Swiss just have a special place in my heart.”

The herd that Fairbanks has built today is a unique blend of all facets of the breed.

“We’ve got some cows that high-indexing, among the top of the breed and we’ve got some cows that go back to some class winners at Madison,” Fairbanks said. “We’ve got a lot of diversity for both type and production. Almost every cow has a pedigree behind her.”

Families that Fairbanks counts among his favorites descend from cows like Timberline Jetway Toni 3E-94 and Cutting Edge T Delilah EX-95; along with a full sister to Jenlar Carter Waltz EX-91 and several animals from both the Red-Brae and Voegeli Brothers herds. The Fairbanks also have members of the family that produced Hilltop Acres B Daredevil. Hilltop Acres H Damara was purchased by the Fairbanks family as a heifer. Damara was sold to Peter Vail prior to her winning the senior three-year-old class at World Dairy Expo in 2025.

Daughters of Damara and her maternal sister, Hilltop Acres Salsa Destiny, remain at the farm.

“I’m really excited, as a breeder, by the Swiss breed right now,” Fairbanks said. “They have all the pieces to make a complete package.”

Fairbanks has developed a breeding philosophy that creates the complete cow.

“We use bulls that put milk in the tank, but I keep a close eye on type,” Fairbanks said. “I still milk all my cows at least once a day, either me or Abby is milking the morning shift every day, and we’re seeing the whole herd every day. I think that’s really important because we obviously want to milk a certain kind of cow.”

Fairbanks utilizes genomic traits to help determine bulls he is interested in using, but maintains that regardless of what the genomics say, the bull’s family has to pass muster, too.

“We’re pretty balanced in our decisions,” Fairbanks said. “We mix and match type along with production. They’ve got to milk, but I refuse to sacrifice type, either.”

Fairbanks and Rickels have an active flush program within their herd and market around a dozen head each year, and they have put bulls into AI.

There is no denying that first Share-A-Heifer ignited Fairbanks’ passion for Brown Swiss 45 years ago, but it has been the people that surround the breed that have kept him captivated.

“I like the breed, but in the registered business, especially, it’s more the connections that you make,” Fairbanks said. “I’ve made some life-long friends across the entire country because of the Brown Swiss cow. The people become like family, and essentially we’re all working towards the same goal — to breed a better Brown Swiss cow.”

The Fairbanks family — Luke Fairbanks (left), Pierce Fairbanks, Abby Rickels, Dylan Rickels, Jody Fairbanks, Doug Fairbanks and Kaylee Fairbanks
Hilltop Acres H Damara-ETV stands atop the senior three-year-old class in the International Brown Swiss Show, Oct. 1, 2025 at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The Fairbanks family had purchased Damara as a heifer, developing her before selling her to Peter Vail.

CANDIDATE RESPONSES

1. How do we break the stereotype about Brown Swiss calves being difficult to raise and that Brown Swiss cows are difficult to breed? What are your suggestions for addressing this issue?

VOELKER: First, I want to congratulate all the breeders across the country who have started to diligently fight back on this stereotype. Being a breeder for the last 15 years and being involved in multiple breeds, this generalization of difficulty in raising calves and poor reproductive traits has significantly reduced over the last few years. The biggest thing is awareness, and with more multiple breed operations, the former stereotype is significantly improving. For the reproductive traits, this has been a focus of the AI stud companies as well as the Brown Swiss Association. With the updated PPR formula and focusing on other reproductive traits outside of DPR, this will further push this initiative of better reproductive traits in Brown Swiss. Being on the front line and discussing these improvements with other dairy breeds is important.

Educational Background: I graduated from Ohio State and then obtained a Master’s Degree in Dairy Genetics from the University of Minnesota

Farm Operation Background & Current Operation Details: We maintain a herd of 15 Brown Swiss cows in a large Holstein herd. Cows have records up to 38,000 milk and are classified on every tour. The current average score is 87 points. We raise all the heifers at our farm (currently 22 on the farm). Some IVF is done for a few special ones.

Outstanding Herd/Show Recognition Received: We have had All-American nominations, and our children have

POPE: This is a loaded question! First, the calf issue. When people tell me that Swiss calves aren’t very smart, I usually chuckle! I will say that the issue of Brown Swiss calves being difficult to start has gotten a lot better than when we first started in the breed in the early 90’s. The first thing I tell people is they have to get to them soon after birth, and if at all possible, do not let them suckle off from Mama. I feel the earlier you get a nipple in the baby’s mouth, the better! Patience is key!!

The breeding issue is one of the biggest issues we face in the Brown Swiss breed. In today’s dairy economy, we have to fill stalls with profitable cows and profitable cows breed. We have struggled with this on our own dairy. Since fertility is highly hereditary, we looked at cow families first, and we made decisions on which cows to keep and which to part with. I know it sounds drastic, but we needed cows that could make money in the stalls we had. Now we do things maybe a bit

unconventionally. We breed Brown Swiss on their first clean heat after 50 days in milk. We also breed cows 2x once on the day they are in heat and then the next day.

But we need to be aware of the bulls we are choosing. Look for positive DPR and CCR. And don’t always wait to have show age calves! Breed them when they are in heat!!

KAPPELMAN: We need to share success stories and benchmarking data from modern Brown Swiss herds. Comparative trials that look at average daily gain, survival rates, etc., can help to debunk the “slow to start” myth. We can also develop “best practice” protocols specifically for Brown Swiss calves. Often, they have different nutritional needs or temperaments that require specific management practices.

I believe that we need to continue to focus on genetic selection when it pertains to cow fertility. Prioritizing traits like DPR, HCR, and CCR in our selection programs will help us buck that stereotype. By showing consistent genetic progress in these areas, we can prove that the breed is evolving to higher standards.

THOMPSON: Brown Swiss Cattle do carry some strong stereotypes. The calves fed colostrum shortly after birth have no differences in my mixed herd. Keeping Brown Swiss on bottles and offering fresh water, I’ve found the best success with. As for cows breeding, I feel genomics can help rectify this issue. Along with semen quality standards. More emphasis needs to be put on the positives, such as stress/heat resistance, robot-friendly, and a great source for cross-breeding.

ERF: These are areas that our breed has worked on through the Genetics Committee to try to improve. Reproduction has been a long-term focus of this group and needs to continue, as there is no quick fix here. The same thing could be said for calf rearing – we know some do extremely well here – getting their stories out will help others and shed that label as being difficult. Overall, we need to show that the past does not mean the future will be that way –we can and have made progress.

2. The world population of Brown Swiss is over 4 million. What can we do to look more outside our borders to promote US genetics? What can the association do to promote US Brown Swiss genetics outside our borders, beyond traveling to these countries?

VOELKER: I think further collaborations with other national Brown Swiss Associations can promote US genetics. I think sharing multi-national genetic information can also help promote US genetics because we would actually be able to compare more apples to apples then. I think the US brown Swiss Association could host forums at well-attended US multi-national events such as World Dairy Expo. These forums could be 20-30 minutes and titled, “The significance of US genetics outside our borders.” Also, our Association can do more social media posts specifically talking about US genetics and post on international pages.

POPE: We have so many great cows here in the United States, and I feel that we need to share our genetics with the world. The easy answer is social media. It is free and can be a great and powerful tool. I don’t know how far the Brown Swiss Bulletin reaches, but publications such as Cowsmopolitan are sent all over the world. Find an international publication to partner with once

a year, or something of that nature. Partner with breeders across the world to consign embryos to sales. The sky’s the limit, we just need to be creative!

KAPPELMAN: There are three things that I think we can do: digital showcasing, strategic partnerships, and embryo accessibility. First, invest in a high-quality, multilingual digital “Genetic Catalog” featuring video content of US cows in commercial settings. Virtual farm tours can bridge the gap without the need for international travel. Second, collaborate with international breed associations to co-host webinars to focus on US genetics. Third, streamline the logistics for embryo exports. Making US genetics available in “ready-to-implant” packages for international farmers can increase our global footprint more effectively than live animal exports.

THOMPSON: I think the bulletin is a great way to promote US genetics. Finding an affordable way to keep this publication can be a huge positive. The reality is that maybe a more active or updated website would be more effective in today’s world.

ERF: To me, this is such an opportunity area for our Association. The market for our genetics will remain strong as long as we continue to focus some improvement in our weaker areas and maintain our strengths. I often consult with herds of various breeds on breeding a better cow, and often caution them that we need a good all-around cow that lasts and gives high volumes. If we can help drive the breed in the direction that gives us a more profitable, high-type, good reproducing cow, those markets will come find those genetics. Our association is the rudder of the breed; we need it to help direct us in the best path forward.

3. What other new ways can the association drive revenue to grow the viability of the Brown Swiss Association?

VOELKER: Discussion with breeders and key leaders in the dairy industry could help our association find avenues to drive further revenue and viability of our Association. Increasing our communication and collaboration with key stakeholders can further achieve these goals.

POPE: This is a tough question to answer since I am not familiar with all of the revenue streams that the association has. The first thing I would say would be, instead of 6-month registrations being free for the programs, I would decrease it to 3 months. However, if elected, I would look for ideas with the rest of the board to try to generate more revenue.

KAPPELMAN: Partner with nutrition and health companies for breed-specific research projects that benefit both the association’s treasury and the breeders’ knowledge base. Explore niche marketing for high-solids milk products (cheese/yogurt), potentially through a certification program that processors can use for a fee.

THOMPSON: I’m unfamiliar with the financials of the BSA. I’m not sure of the correct answer. I think, like any business, expanding on areas that are profitable and addressing areas that are not cost-effective. Outsourcing or combining resources could be an answer. As an association, we must communicate with other breed associations and network with different business practices that work. Reaching out to other species with breed associations could lead to some new ideas.

ERF: Partnering with other companies that offer products or services that the association can endorse or refer to breeders that get the association a commission or fee for that opportunity. I have seen this approach work in our industry, and it is a win-win for the organizations that have done this well. The key here is finding the right partner. Also, we have many new dairies and breeders getting into Brown Swiss. Having a way to maintain contact and communication on what the association can do to add value to their operation is a way to at least maintain or potentially grow our revenues.

4. What role do you see Registered cattle, in particular Brown Swiss, playing in the future of the dairy industry?

VOELKER: I see registered Brown Swiss Cattle playing an important role in both the commercial setting by providing high resale value and increased components, and the show industry with Brown Swiss show animals being in new herds and in herds that previously didn’t have Brown Swiss secondary to high marketing potential.

POPE: In today’s dairy economy, it may be hard to see the value of registered animals with the price of beef calves and the prices of commercial cows. But good individuals with good pedigrees always sell well. But in the downturn of the commercial cow prices, pedigreed animals, I feel, still hold a premium. It isn’t just being registered in my mind; it’s the pedigree and the generations behind said registered animal. I always say it costs no more to have a good cow than a bad cow.

In our own dairy, we purchased some deep cows with pedigrees and have been doing IVF. We implant embryos throughout the year for pedigreed animals for the future. Whether it be a sale out of the hutch or just milking a deep-pedigreed animal, we feel it adds value to our herd. We can’t get much bigger where we are, so we are reinventing our dairy a bit to have more registered animals.

On our dairy and for most family farms, the next generation is the future. On our dairy, the registered animals are what bring excitement to the kids. Ashlynn started showing and going to sales with her papa, and now she is the start of the 4th generation at Iroquois Acres. And to see the boys’ excitement when a special calf is born or when they do well at a show is priceless. If you ever come here, Rowdy will be your tour guide, and he will rattle off every pedigree of every animal here. That is our why, and for us, that is enough.

KAPPELMAN: As the industry moves toward sustainability, the Brown Swiss breed’s natural longevity is a massive asset. Fewer replacements needed means a smaller carbon footprint per pound of milk. Brown Swiss are uniquely positioned for the growing A2/A2 and high-component markets, ensuring their relevance in a diversifying dairy landscape. Registered cattle provide a verified “Paper Trail of Quality.” In an era of precision farming, knowing the exact genetic makeup and lineage of an animal is crucial for maximizing ROI.

THOMPSON: The role of registered cattle has lessened with software and services available through milk testing. The value of high-type and high genetic cattle has increased. Leading for

something that purebred breeders can still aspire to.

ERF: The role of the breed associations is constantly changing. The future of the industry is collecting and utilizing data. Our association is the collector and keeper of the phenotypic type information – that is very much needed for our breed’s future. In addition, the registered population has and will continue to drive the progress of each breed, including Brown Swiss. It is the duty of the association to make sure that the breed moves in a direction that keeps our cow relevant to the dairy industry.

5. What impact do you see genomic testing playing in the development of the Brown Swiss breed? What can be done to promote more genomic testing?

VOELKER: Increased genomic testing can increase the reliability and interpretability of genomic results. Partnering with AI companies and establishing multinational genomic testing consortia to share and improve genomic testing data can also promote more genomic testing.

POPE: Genomics is a tool, and just like any tool, it works how it is used. I will say that genomic testing provides data, and the more data we can gather, the more informed decisions we can make. I do think that more animals should be tested to gather more information to make the data we have more reliable.

We have partnered with New Generation Genetics to get our Swiss tested. It has worked great! It is exciting to get the results! We are getting back results for multiple generations, and it is so exciting and fulfilling to see the progress we are making within our own little herd.

So, my advice would be to find a partner, or maybe the association can facilitate a partnership between breeders and a lab to get more people to genomic test their herd. Sometimes that is all it takes for people to start.

KAPPELMAN: Genomics is the ultimate “time machine,” allowing us to identify elite females and sires years earlier. For a breed with a smaller population like ours, this can accelerate genetic gain exponentially. A few ideas to promote more genomic testing include tiered pricing and incentive programs. Work with labs to provide volume discounts for whole-herd testing. Offer “Genomic Credits” for registrations or association fees when a breeder tests a certain percentage of their annual calf crop.

THOMPSON: Genomics is key in keeping pace with other breeds. I feel all ET cattle should be genotyped. This would ensure parent verification and give more information to potential buyers, while adding to our genomic base and increasing reliability.

ERF: As many who know me will attest, this is a passion area for me. Genomic testing is learning from the past to predict the future – If we can identify potential outstanding animals at a young age, we can increase progress towards a better cow for the future. The more animals we test, the more accurate the predictions become. To increase testing, the association could look at a closer partnership with a testing company that could actually help initiate some unique research into new areas.

Best wishes this grazing season!

Learning for a Sustainable Future

HI, MY NAME IS KASHANNA MONROE.

I am the new Office Assistant here at the Brown Swiss Association, and I am thrilled to be working for this company. I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, but I have spent most of my career as a data entry operator. While I do not come from a farming background, I am excited to learn all about this industry.

A little bit about myself: I grew up in a small town called Loda in Illinois, surrounded by cornfields and a few farms. I recently moved to Loves Park, Illinois, to be with my fiancé. In my free time, I enjoy going on long walks through forest preserves, cooking, playing board games, going to comedy shows, and going to the movies. Also, my fiancé and I recently bought a rabbit, so I am learning all about a new type of animal—just a very different one than a cow!

I look forward to learning all about the Brown Swiss breed as I grow with the company. I am excited to become a part of this community, and I look forward to connecting with everyone at the Brown Swiss Association.

National Brown Swiss Convention Tour The Field of Dreams

The Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa, is a cherished landmark that offers visitors a unique blend of nostalgia, baseball history, and the magic of the classic 1989 film. It gained fame as the filming location for the beloved movie “Field of Dreams,” which was released in 1989. The film tells the story of Ray Kinsella, a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield, attracting the ghosts of baseball legends. This narrative resonates deeply with themes of redemption, nostalgia, and the enduring love of baseball, making the site a pilgrimage for fans and movie enthusiasts alike. Visitors to the Field of Dreams site can walk onto the iconic baseball diamond, which is beautifully maintained and open for play. The serene setting, surrounded by lush farmland and rolling hills, creates a contemplative atmosphere where guests can reflect on personal dreams and memories associated with baseball. Where cinematic history and the spirit of baseball meet in the heart of Iowa. Visitors can walk the iconic diamond nestled in the cornfields and play catch with legendary Ghost Players. From youth tournaments to seasonal events, every experience is steeped in nostalgia.

National Brown Swiss Convention attendees will be enjoying a meal at the Field of Dreams and will have time to explore the movie site, as well as visit the museum and shopping center.

Introduction

CONSIGNMENT SALES: Your December Bulletin reported on two of the longest Consignment Sales in Brown Swiss history. The 89th Eastern Breeders Sale was held at Muncy, PA on October 18 and managed by Modern Associates while the 47'h Heart of America Sale was held in Stillwater, OK on Octobr 23 managed by the HOA Committee. And also on October 1, the World Premier Brown Swiss Sale was held in Madison, WI at WDE and managed by Brown Swiss Enterprises.

You might ask, when was the very first Consignment sale held and where.

FIRST BROWN SWISS CONSIGNMENT SALE

The first Brown Swiss Consignment Sale was held over a hundred years ago on June 26, 1917, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Shown here is the cover of the catalog with the picture being "A Scene in Switzerland". The sale was managed by William S. Dunn, of New York.

The catalog introductory states that since Henry Clarke imported the first Swiss in 1869, and followed by other importations, these herds shipped surplus stock by private sale all over the country and exports to Canada, South America and South Africa. The public has been demanding a consignment sale such as this. A total of 38 animals were consigned to this first sale.

The number 1 animal in the catalog was the heifer, Phylis Blenkin 7712, consigned by Theodore N. Vail, Lyndonville, VT. Sire of the heifer was Tom Phylis 1769, Grand Champion at the New York State Fair in 1911. The yoke worn by Tom Phylis is on display at the Brown Swiss Historical Society in Beloit. (See Sept. 2025 VTP story, Page 21). Tom appeared in several of the pedigrees as grandsire or great grandsire. There were 13 cows, 23 heifers and 2 bulls in the sale.

Other consigners included: C. D. Marshall, PA (6 animals); Walhalla Farms, NY (6); T. Coleman du Pont, DE

(4); Hull Brothers, OH (8); Norman E. Borden, MA (4); J. M. Millard, PA (6); and Blair Hileman, PA (3).

The high selling animal was No. 3, Iola 3923, consigned by Walhalla Farms, who sold for $665. She was also sired by Tom Phylis. Her official fiveyear-old record was 16,844 lbs. milk.

Virgil Ackerman 1940-2026

Virgil Ackerman, 85, of Atwater, died Tuesday, January 13, at CentraCare-Rice Hospital in Willmar. His funeral service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, January 17, at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. Visitation will be two hours before the service. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson & Johnson Funeral Home.

Virgil Ackerman was born on July 31, 1940, to Harold and Violet (Lindblad) Ackerman in Kandiyohi County. He was baptized and confirmed at Tripolis Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Raised on a dairy farm, Virgil learned the importance of hard work at a young age. He attended country school through the eighth grade and later graduated from Atwater High School in 1959. Following high school, Virgil enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country for four years. On December 28, 1963, Virgil was united in marriage to Karen Christiensen in Sleepy Eye. Together, they were blessed with five children: Jody, Jill, Jennifer, Jessica, and Jonathon. The couple made their home on a farm near Atwater, where they raised their family.

Virgil milked cows his entire life and took great pride in es-

Jason Todd Nierman 1973-2026

It is with great sadness we share that Jason Todd Nierman tragically lost his life on January 4, 2026. His heroic actions on that day were a testament to who he was and how he lived his life.

He graduated from Brownstown Central High School in 1992 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Purdue University. While at Purdue he was a member of Beta Sigma Psi where he formed lifelong friendships and found his partner in life, Lindsey Jason and Lindsey were married on September 29, 2001. Jason began his career as an economist in Dairy Programs for the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C., and then continued his career in Louisville, KY, becoming Market Administrator. He was a dedicated and respected leader for 28 years.

Jason was an intelligent and hardworking man. He lived his faith through quiet service, always willing to lend a hand and thinking of others before himself. Jason was a family man in every sense

tablishing Vir Kar J Swiss Farm. With the exception of family members, no one else ever milked his cows, a point of great pride for him. His children were often by his side, helping on the farm, where Virgil ensured they learned the value of dedication and hard work.

A lifelong farmer, Virgil enjoyed showing cattle at county fairs and supporting youth through 4-H and FFA programs. Vir Kar J Swiss Farm was the Meeker County Farm Family in 2013 and the PDCA Distinguished Breeder award in 2004. He served on the Meeker County DHIA Board, was a member of the Minnesota Brown Swiss Association, where he also served as president, and the National Brown Swiss Association. Virgil also had a fondness for Minneapolis-Moline tractors and, above all, cherished supporting his grandchildren in all they did. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos.

Virgil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Karen; his children: Jody (Allen) Krueger, Jill (Darrin Herd) Ackerman, Jennifer (Matthew) Welling, Jessica (Dale) Vatthauer, and Jonathon (Rachael) Ackerman; and his grandchildren: Caitlyn (Jake) Chronister, Carlie Krueger, Chayce (Hannah) Krueger, Gracie (Nic) Jackson, Gentrie, Gradie, and Grissum Vatthauer, Paige and Preston Welling, and Violet, Leo, and Ollie Ackerman.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Debbie Christiensen; brother-in-law, Larry Johnson; and many other relatives.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Violet Ackerman; his brother, John Ackerman; and his sister, Harriet Johnson.

of the word and took great pride in the life he created. His family was his greatest priority, and he would do anything for them – being a constant, present father who delighted in spoiling his children in every possible way. His love language was giftgiving, a reflection of his generous heart and desire to bring joy to those he loved. He enjoyed tending to his garden, took pride in helping when needed on the family farm, and was a loyal friend. Often bordering on obsession, Jason was a lifelong Purdue fan. He also loved a good song, finding meaning in music that often mirrored the kindness he brought into the world.

Jason leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and were not ready to say goodbye: the love of his life, Lindsey (Westerfeld), daughters Lillian and Ella, and son Landon. His father, Roger Nierman, brother Brian (Amy) Nierman, and sister Jill (Don) Calhoun. Nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Jason include Shelby (Austin) Stamm, Ryland (Sidney), Brayton, and Camdyn Nierman, Chase Calhoun, Zachary and Caroline Oswald, Isaac, Claire, and Elaine Prickel, Jericho and Anneliese Jones, Hazel and Nash Medley. Jason was united in heaven with his mother JoElla, grandparents William and Lillian Rochner and Henry and Laura Nierman, and mother-in-law Jane Hinsky.
