Bull Development
Feeding:
Bulls are gathered at weaning time (6-9 months of age) and brought to the ranch headquarters. A complete health vaccination and parasite control program is followed. Bulls are tattooed in the right ear and freeze branded for individual identification. A hot brand is used for ranch brand. Bulls are sorted into feeding pens by sire group and size, and grown during the summer at the ranch feeding facility. The bulls are kept at the ranch feeding facility until sale time. A high forage diet consisting of free choice crabgrass hay is provided. A 15% protein ration is bunk fed throughout the feeding period and adjusted to keep bulls growing well, with a 3#/day gain target. Extreme care is taken to develop a bull that is in very athletic condition and results in many years with breeding longevity.
Bulls (30 days prior to sale) – StayBred VL5, Clean Up II
Breeding Soundness Exam:
Within 45 days prior to the sale, Dr. Chad Hommertzheim, Heartland Veterinary Clinic, performs a BSE on all bulls. A semen sample is collected and evaluated to determine motility and morphology. Dr. Hommertzheim performs a physical exam and a scrotal measurement is taken.

EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database of the American Angus Association. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Every animal selling in Stucky Ranch sales have EPDs which have been genomically enhanced from individual genomic tests being added to the base pedigree index EPD values. Also, every animal selling in Stucky Ranch sales have the highest accuracy carcass EPDs possible. This is resulting from individual carcass ultrasound data in large contemporary groups processed by the American Angus Association.
CED (Calving Ease Direct) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first calf heifers.
BW (Birth Weight EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
WW (Weaning Weight EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
YW (Yearling Weight EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
SC (Scrotal Circumference EPD), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Milk (Maternal Milk EPD), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. The part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to mother’s milk.
CW (Carcass Weight EPD), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marb (Marbling EPD), expressed as a fraction of the differences in the USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
RE (Ribeye Area EPD), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in the ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat (Fat Thickness EPD), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Doc (Docility EPD) is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility
HP (Heifer Pregnancy EPD) characterizes differences among sires for the daughter’s heifer pregnancy. Reported in units of percentage, a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability of becoming pregnant than a sire with a lower EPD.
$Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning. $M traits include calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.
$Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.
$Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
$Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
$Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all 15 traits involved in $M and $B. $C aims for maximum profitability with cowherds that retain some heifers for replacements, but retain ownership on cull heifers and all steers through the feedlot and sell on a quality based carcass grid.
Production Measurements:
BW – Actual birth weight taken day of calving.
205 – Weaning weight adjusted to 205 day equivalent and dam’s age.
365 – Yearling weight adjusted to 365 day equivalent.
Hip ht. – Actual hip height taken at yearling and adjusted to 365 day equivalent.
SC – Scrotal circumference measured to the nearest 0.5 centimeter and adjusted to 365 day equivalent.
Disposition Score – Each animal has been evaluated numerous times throughout the growing period and has been assigned a numerical score for disposition. We eliminate animals from our system that are too nervous to be manageable in most any operation. However, we caution that when one animal is taken from a large group and put by itself it will usually not have a relaxed attitude.
1 = Docile
2 = Restless
3 = Nervous
4 = Flighty
5 = Aggressive
6 = Very Aggressive
Dam Udder Score – The dam has been evaluated for udder quality the day of calving, and has been assigned a two part score for teat size and udder suspension. Teat size is listed first, then udder suspension.
All bulls will have individual videos available for viewing at www.stuckyranch.com by March 1. Also available on our website will be a sortable Excel spreadsheet with every EPD, $Value, DNA Score, and performance data for each bull selling.

We have developed a scoring system to help you successfully purchase bulls best suited for the needs of your herd. The EPD system is the most reliable format to help identify the genetic merit of beef animals. However, it can be somewhat overwhelming to fully understand. To aid in your bull selections, we designed a simple scoring system on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being undesirable and 10 being most desirable for a particular trait. We have detailed below the considerations for each trait and what impacts the final score a bull achieves for each of the four economically relevant traits. While we recommend the study of all the data we present on each bull, this scoring system is meant as an aid to confirm the best bulls to achieve your goals, with your herd, in the beef industry.
Bulls with a score of 8-9 will be suitable for use on yearling heifers. These bulls have “Recommended for heifers” below the trait box. Considerations for this score include: Calving Ease Direct EPD, DNA profile scores for calving ease and birth weight, CED and BW EPDs from the sire and dam of the bull. This system has been used successfully by many customers achieving nearly 100% unassisted calving rates from large groups of heifers. Bulls with a score of 7 are fine to use on cows, but not initially recommended for use on heifers. In our breeding program, we avoid the use of higher birth weight EPD sires and dams to keep consistent calving ease and avoid the occasional extreme heavy birth weight calf. Herd management of the females in the weeks prior to calving can also play a significant role in the calving ability of a first calf heifer.
PERFORMANCE
Bulls with a score of 9 rank in the top 35% for yearling weight EPD in the National Cattle Evaluation database for non-parent Angus bulls. They will sire more pounds of beef whether selling at weaning or yearling. Bulls with a score of 8 rank in the top 50% for yearling weight EPD. These bulls also score well in genomic testing to help confirm their breeding value. Our goal is to use top performance bulls in the Angus breed, yet stay in the mid-range percentiles for frame size. This is important when retaining females that will peak at yearling and then maintain a moderate mature size with superior body capacity and fleshing ability. It’s not how big they get, it’s how quick they get big enough.
REPLACEMENT FEMALES
Bulls with a score of 9 have a $Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) in the top 35% of the NCE for non-parent Angus bulls. $Maternal combines the EPD traits of Calving Ease Direct, Weaning Weight, Calving Ease Maternal, Milk, Mature Weight, Docility, Heifer Pregnancy, and Foot quality into one selection tool. $Maternal aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent in today’s production. The udder quality of the bull’s dam is also factored into our score. The dam must score an 8 or higher on teat size and udder suspension for the bull to score a 9 in our trait score system. Our goal is superb udder quality in your replacement females.
CARCASS TRAITS
Bulls with a score of 9 have a $Grid Value ranking in the top 35% of the database for non-parent Angus bulls. Bulls with a score of 8 must rank in the top 50% for $Grid Value. $Grid Value is expressed in dollars per carcass. It is the difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Investing in superior carcass genetics pay the producer if you retain ownership and sell them on a quality grid. Bulls identified with the Certified Angus Beef Targeting the Brand logo also helps give cattlemen the genetic ability to strive to produce cattle which qualify and receive the carcass premium meeting CAB specifications.

Dear Friends,
Welcome to our 32nd Annual Production Sale! On behalf of the entire Stucky family I invite you to join us on March 12 for an outstanding offering of 125 age advantage Registered Angus bulls.
We are living in and enjoying unprecedented times in the beef industry and market structure! Beef demand from the American consumer is resilient. As a “lifer” with the American Angus Association and Certified Angus Beef programs, it is rewarding to witness over 1.2 billion pounds of CAB product sold in the U.S. and 55 other countries in 2024. For beef producers who have stepped up their breeding goals and meet the demand for high quality beef it has been a very rewarding year!
At Stucky Ranch we want to take our breeding goals a step further and demand a superior Angus cow to be a product of our breeding goals. The American Angus Association has provided the tools for us to identify and select for the traits of economic importance to bolster maternal genetic selection. $Maternal Value selection includes the important traits of calving ease along with weaning weight and milk, but also includes heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight and foot quality.
As ranchers we can have the 1-2 punch for economic success in breeding Angus. No longer is it carcass vs. maternal genetics. It now has become a focus of combining the genetics that excel in both! Many advances will be made in the coming years with this strategy. We are just excited to be a very small part of this advancement in successful beef production. Of the bulls selling in this sale, 82% meet the Certified Angus Beef Targeting the Brand specification; 72% of the same bulls rank in the top third of the Angus database for $Maternal Value!
As you prepare for our upcoming sale, our website will have a sortable Excel spreadsheet with every EPD, $Value, and performance data for your ability to sort and focus on the sale bulls that meet your specifications. Individual bull videos will be available for viewing after March 1 on our website and DV Auction. Please contact us at any time for assistance to help make your bull buying needs as simple and easy as possible.
We are very fortunate to have an outstanding crew help us meet our work needs. Nic Lampe continues to do an outstanding job every day of the year and we appreciate him! The day help guys: Scott H, Randy, Bruce, Blaine, Scott L, Jerry. We appreciate you all!! Thank you for your service. We are also mindful we are only caretakers of God’s creation and hopefully we leave it better than we started with.
The bulls are penned by sire group Tuesday afternoon for viewing starting at 3 p.m., with our steak supper starting at 6 p.m. The bulls will be ready for viewing sale morning at 10 a.m. with the beef lunch served at 11:30. The sale begins promptly at 1 p.m.
Thanks again to all our past customers for your loyal support, and we look forward to meeting and getting to know future customers!
Best regards,
Gordon

IF YOU’RE TARGETING QUALITY-DRIVEN PREMIUMS, SHE IS HALF THE GENETIC EQUATION.
Targeting the Brand™ identifies registered Angus cattle with the genetic potential to raise calves more likely to meet all 10 Certified Angus Beef ® brand specifications.
Minimum Genetic Requirements
AngusGS genomic DNA test results are ranked on a 1 to 99 score for each individual trait measured. Scores are typically based on a score of 1 being the highest ranking for the trait and 99 being the lowest. As an example for CED (Calving Ease Direct) and CEM (Calving Ease Maternal), a score of 1 would indicate the very easiest calving with a score of 99 being the most difficult calving. In the performance traits of WW (weaning wt.) and YW (yearling wt.) a score of 1 would translate to the heaviest weight and a score of 99 would be the lightest weight. A score of 1 with MILK would indicate heaviest milking and 99 would be lightest milking. In the carcass measurement traits of MARB (Marbling) and RE (Ribeye Area) a score of 1 would be most desirable and 99 least desirable. With TEND (Tenderness), a score of 1 would indicate a most tender meat end product.
