Feed for the Stage: Practical Nutrition for your Sheep Flock By Dr. Kelsey Bentley, Small Ruminant Extension Specialist, Kansas State University Nutrition accounts for approximately 60% of total production costs in a sheep operation, making the feeding program a major factor in both flock productivity and profitability. Underfeeding can compromise fertility and performance, while feeding every animal alike overlooks differences in maintenance, growth, pregnancy, and milk production. An effective program matches nutrient supply to production stage and uses body condition to evaluate whether your program is working well. Use Body Condition to Guide Feeding Decisions Body condition scoring provides a practical assessment of the fat and muscle reserves available to support production. Wool can conceal substantial differences between animals, so hands-on evaluation over the loin, just behind the last rib, is more useful than visual appraisal alone. Assess the prominence of the spine and transverse processes, along with the muscle and fat covering them. Evaluate condition as animals move through the production cycle and use those observations to guide grouping and supplementation. Young females should be fed separately from mature ewes because they must support their own growth in addition to reproduction. Replacement ewe lambs should reach approximately 60% to 70% of mature weight by breeding and 80% to 90% by lambing. Target Prebreeding Nutrition Nutritional flushing increases energy intake before breeding to improve reproductive performance. The response depends on the ewe’s starting condition: ewes scoring 2 to 3 are candidates, while those scoring 3.5 or higher are unlikely to benefit from additional supplementation. Increasing dietary energy by approximately 10% beginning six weeks before breeding can be accomplished by adding roughly ¼ to ½ pound of corn per ewe daily to the existing diet. Flushing has been associated with a 10% to 30% increase in lambs born, making it a useful management tool when directed toward responsive ewes. Ram preparation is equally important. Rams can lose up to 12% of their body weight during breeding, and nutrition influences both libido and fertility. A body condition score of approximately 3 before turnout provides a useful target. Allocate Feed According to Pregnancy Demands Pregnancy diagnosis offers an opportunity to improve feeding precision. Ultrasound examination of ewes approximately 45 to 60 days after breeding allows producers to separate groups by fetal number and better match feed allocation to expected demand. Late gestation presents a particular challenge: nutrient requirements increase as fetal growth accelerates, while the expanding uterus limits the ewe’s capacity to consume large amounts of forage. Meeting those needs requires attention to dietary energy supply, especially during the final six weeks of
pregnancy. Increasing grain supplementation during this period helps support fetal growth and reduce the risk of pregnancy toxemia. Feed allocation should reflect ewe size, condition, and the number of fetuses carried. Pregnant ewe lambs also need enough nutrients to continue growing, reinforcing the value of managing them separately. Energy requirements increase approximately 30% to 50% during lactation. Ewes nursing twins or triplets require greater nutritional support than those nursing singles, and feeding groups according to lamb number helps direct resources where they are needed. Lactation peaks around four weeks after lambing. As lambs become established on supplemental feed and weaning approaches, gradually reduce feed allocation to the ewes to support declining milk production and drying off. The recommendation is to maintain the reduced feeding level for approximately one week after weaning. Adjust Lamb Diets as They Grow Lamb nutrition begins with timely colostrum intake. For lambs requiring continued milk supplementation, use a lamb-specific milk replacer and follow the manufacturer’s feeding directions. Introduce creep feed at approximately one week of age and maintain access through the weaning transition. A lamb-only feeding area encourages early intake and helps reduce the likelihood that lambs will go off feed at weaning. Creep diets should contain approximately 18% to 20% crude protein and maintain a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 2:1. As weaned lambs grow, dietary crude protein can decrease from approximately 18% to 16%, then to 14% during finishing. Replacement females require a different approach from market lambs. Avoid unrestricted grain access after weaning, as excessive fat deposition in the udder may reduce future milk production potential. Keep Water and Minerals in the Program Water availability directly affects feed intake, efficiency, reproduction, and performance. Sheep generally consume approximately 1 to 2 gallons of water per 4 pounds of dry matter intake, with gestating and lactating ewes potentially requiring more. Provide a sheep-specific mineral and protect it from the weather. Products formulated for other livestock may contain copper concentrations unsuitable for sheep. The overall diet should also support an appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus balance, particularly in growing lambs. A productive feeding program depends on regular adjustment. Combining body condition assessment with management groups based on age, fetal number, and lambs nursing allows producers to direct feed toward the animals with the greatest demands.
