Nebraska Angus Ass’n Sec/Mgr Announces Resignation Dear Nebraska Angus Family, After leading our Association of Angus members and breeders here in Nebraska for eleven years, the time has come for me to resign my position as Sec/Mgr with the Nebraska Angus Association. This decision has come with lots of thought, soul searching and prayer over the past year. I want and need to slow down, have more time to spend with my family. My last day on the job will be Jan 15, 2019, upon completion of training of the new Sec/Mgr. This Association & our membership, & everything we do will always be at the top of my list of groups to belong to, care about and participate in. I count many, many of you as close personal friends. I have learned something from each of you along the way.

My time as Sec/Mgr has enriched my life & I hope I have been able to do the same for each of you, in some small way. It has been an honor to serve this Association and our members.

Nebraska Angus Ass’n Begins Search for New Sec/Mgr The Nebraska Angus Ass’n Board of Directors has begun their search for a new Secretary/Manager to lead the Angus Association. The job is officially open on October 17th, with application deadline, November 15, 2018. Interviews will be conducted the weekend of the Annual Meeting/Banquet (December 1st) in Kearney, NE. Please see the attached Job description and application procedures at the bottom of the job description.

JOB SUMMARY The Secretary/Manager is the administrator of the non-profit organization, whose purpose is to promote the breeders of Angus cattle (both registered and commercial) and the Angus breed of cattle within the state of Nebraska. The part time position includes organizing Association events (including event planning and management), communication skills, publication editing, public relations, marketing, business account management, tax preparation, social media management and website maintenance.

Successful candidate will be highly skilled in time management and an ability to work independently and also with a board of directors whose members are located throughout the state of Nebraska.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Ability to organize and plan multiple Association events and activities, capability for multitasking is highly desirable.

• Manage multiple financial accounts that include a checking account, manage accounts receivable and monitor investment accounts.

• Prepare and file quarterly and year-end tax returns, compile information for Association accountant in order to file non profit tax returns.

• Manage biennial reports and filings with the Nebraska Secretary of State office.

• Work with Nebraska Department of Agriculture in breed promotion • Coordinate and promote membership in the Association, maintaining current member benefits and developing, designing new benefits for the membership.

• Knowledge of and experience with ad sales and editing for the Nebraska Angus News and Annual Directory.

• Work closely with a ten member elected board of directors in setting Association goals, direction, researching and compiling information necessary for the board to make decisions and then implementing those decisions and direction.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Experience working with marketing activities and events • Ability to develop positive and effective working relationships with cattle industry partners, agricultural press • Ability to work independently and also in a team environment • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Working knowledge of and familiarity with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or other word processing software.

ere we are in October, with our upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons rapidly approaching. We’ve already experienced two snow falls here in the Sandhills since Fall actually began in September.

I hope that is not a sign of the snow we should expect during this coming winter.

During late August and into September we had three of our annual events in a three and half week timeframe, State Fair Open Angus Show, Husker Harvest Days and our Annual tour. All three events were successful although for our state fair show the exhibitor turnout was considerably lower than the number of entries. The show will remain ROV for 2019 but it will be on probation status meaning it will have to meet a certain number animals exhibited to remain an ROV show with the American Angus Association.

Our Husker Harvest Days coverage is on page 11. With all of the show site “improvements”, we were forced to adapt our exhibit because of the changes to our lot. My thanks to Kevin Glause who was able to meet with me and show Mgr Matt Jungemann in March, regarding the show site changes and how they would affect our exhibitors and exhibit setup. As a result of the March meeting we were able to negotiate a “shared” lot between cattle associations that would allow for overnight tie out pens, tack storage and trailer storage during the show. We had 6 exhibitors under our big top, three of which were new to the show. I believe the changes allowed the breed associations to work together to improve our Northwest corner of the show grounds.

Our annual tour was held on September 24-25th in the beautiful Loup River Valley in Central Nebraska. Ten members were able to host a stop or display cattle at one of those stops for tour goers. Special interest stops included a visit the Chalk Mines South of Scotia and the “treasured” Herb Mignery outdoor sculpture garden in Bartlett. Please check out the photos, story coverage and sponsor list on pages 18-19, 22. Huge thanks to all of our members for their hard work in preparing for the tour with their fundraising efforts. It wouldn’t be

possible without the sponsors or members efforts in getting ready for their big day!!

The photo on the cover is one of the two barns in Nebraska that were selected as part of the Paint the Brand 40th Anniversary Celebration of Certified Angus Beef. Learn more about the celebration, the barns and the two Nebraska members who were selected, on page 13. This branded beef program has played a huge part in the growth and popularity of the Angus breed over the last 40 years, congratulations to you, the breeders on a job well done.

The annual meeting/education seminar/banquet is set for Saturday, December 1st, in Kearney, NE at the Holiday Inn. We have a great lineup of speakers for the educational seminar portion of the afternoon. Please see the schedule, banquet reservation and hotel room information on page 29.

The bio’s of our two speakers is also on that page. The hotel room block closes on November 16, 2018 and banquet reservations are due November 25th. We have added a youth menu to our banquet reservations for this year.

Lastly, I am letting our members know that I have submitted my resignation as Sec/Mgr to our board of directors earlier this month. I am wanting to slow down, wanting and needing to have more time to spend with my family. This is my next to last column, On The Job…Watch for some interesting “numbers to be covered” in my last message to you as Sec/Mgr…in the January/February 2019 issue.

The NAA Board has approved the Sec/Mgr Job Description that is on page one of this issue…if you’re interested, check out the application procedures listed at the bottom of the page.

Application deadline is Nov 15th, 2018, with interviews of selected candidates being conducted the weekend of the Annual Meeting (Dec 1st, actual interview to be finalized in late Nov), in Kearney, NE. Until Next Time...

I

can see a hint of sunrise, got to get going and check salt and water tank down south, need to come back and treat that foot rot, hay rake needs to get started and the baler needs greased, radio says rain is coming, call the tire shop to get that flat fixed on the mowing tractor, replace that bearing before it’s completely dark, missed the 10:00 weather AGAIN, I’m sure the forecast is rain, fence needs attention in creek pasture again……..

This past summer was a trying one to say the least and I found myself not even keeping up with the news most days, but I did manage to catch some headlines on the radio, “Politician caught in lie”, “Multi National Company invests in fake meat”, “Coach Frost optimistic” (I still am), “Kim Kardashhhh……….wait a minute, FAKE MEAT? The term fake meat is used to cover both plant-based products that mimic meat and lab grown sludge.

There are so many things to think about with petri protein. I will leave the details of the subject for you to research on your own. I don’t want to waste my space here talking about the process of removing heme iron and replacing juicy saturated fats with omega-3 fatty acids, leaving a yellow colored cell mass growing in the dish that would have a fishy taste. Likewise, the use of fetal bovine serum (FBS) as the culture media for growing these cells is not what I want to focus on here.

What I would like you to consider is the term “fake meat” itself. Fake meat, faux meat, clean meat, cultured meat, and the list of names goes on.

All kinds of adjectives trying to mislead consumers into believing they are getting real meat. These groups want to be considered meat and yet legitimate beef products are demonized as unhealthy and inedible. I’m sure most of us have not forgotten the finely textured lean beef fiasco that resulted in a colorful moniker killing ground beef demand a few years ago. In my opinion the term fake meat legitimizes a counterfeit product.

There are other questions that need to be answered as well. While there are claims of lower costs, environmental friendliness, ect. with these

products, they remain unproven.

Other unanswered questions about how these cell masses are grown are kept secret due to fear of stolen technology and processes. Another unanswered question is eating experience.

The reason beef is a preferred choice of protein is because we enjoy eating a tasty burger or juicy steak. Some things are hard to duplicate and eating experience is a huge one. So the next time someone mentions fake meat to me, I will just ask them if they are referring to FBS cultured protein.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Suzy Hebbert for her service to the Nebraska Angus Association for the past 11 years. During her tenure as Sec/Mgr. our membership has grown, our financial standing has improved and she has orchestrated many positive changes. She cares deeply about our association and should be proud of her work. As she turns the page to a new chapter we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors.

I would also like to thank my fellow board members, my family and especially the membership of the Nebraska Angus Association for allowing me to serve as President this past year. It truly is an honor to serve this organization in such a capacity.

As we enter into the Holiday season, I want to wish all of you the very best. Even with all of it’s flaws, we still live in the greatest country in the world. Raising, promoting and working with the greatest cattle. We are truly blessed. Happy Thanksgiving, may your 2019 be safe and prosperous and as we celebrate the birth of the Christ child, Merry Christmas.

t the recent Certified Angus Beef Conference, information they label as part of their “Beef Conversation Series” was presented. It’s a good review of positive, pertinent facts to share with our friends and consumers who aren’t as familiar with the beef industry as we are.

Therefore, the following information is courtesy of the CAB folks, and was updated on 2/14/2018.

Environmental Information: • Ranchers today use fewer natural resources than ever before to produce safe, affordable beef.

• Compared to 1960, half as many farms and ranches are feeding a U.S. population that has more than doubled.

• Roughly 52% of the land in the US is suitable for agriculture – 17% is used for raising grains, vegetables and fruit, and 35% is used to graze animals – which is a great utilization of arid and mountainous regions that are not suitable for other uses. Grazing cattle in these areas plays an important role in limiting soil erosion, preserving wildlife habitats and reducing wildfire risk.

• Between 1977 and 2007, the U.S. produced 13% more beef from 30% fewer animals. More beef from fewer animals optimizes resources, like land and water, while providing essential nutrients for the human diet.

• Cattle are responsible for 1.9% of methane emissions in the U.S. – compared to 25.3% for transportation, and 29.7% for electricity.

high. Last year alone, CAB annual sales reached the 1 billion pound mark. It’s quite an achievement from the brand’s very humble beginnings in 1978. The take-away message is that quality sells.

Even with all of the press about the vegetarian/vegan leanings, beef consumption and expenditures continue to rise each year. The focus on quality beef has never been stronger for the consumer, as evidenced by the growing market share for CAB Prime.

The marketing folks at Certified Angus Beef announced that they are taking a different twist to promote the brand, and maybe separate a bit from all of the copycat Angus beef marketing out there. Their new tag line is: NOT TO BRAG, BUT #BESTANGUSBEEF.EVER. They are also releasing a very effective television commercial titled Rare Moments, Done Well. It highlights family and friends gathered around the table for meals – in a variety of settings.

With the excellent staff in Ohio and throughout the country, Certified Angus Beef continues to positively influence market demand for our highquality Angus cattle. It is aptly referred to as The Brand that Changed Beef, and I wholeheartedly concur.

So as we all gather around our tables for holiday meals and enjoy our delicious beef, let us all be grateful for the long-range vision of the founders of this brand, as well as those who continue to work diligently for its continued growth!

his year has been an astounding one for Angus breeders and juniors from Nebraska! Reflecting back on all that was done and accomplished in 2018, makes me proud to be a part of the greatest breed and state association there is. Moving into the fall season, calving is just right around the corner along with a new show season soon to be in full swing!

In August, many Junior members had the opportunity to travel to Billings, Montana to participate and attend the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development conference. Juniors were able to tour many different Angus facilities, experience other agriculturalrelated operations, and spend time meeting other juniors across the country. I highly encourage juniors to attend at least one LEAD or Raising the Bar conference throughout their junior career as it is a great networking tool and some of the most cherished memories from the NJAA trace back to these conferences. By the time this is released, locations for both conferences will be published.

The Nebraska State Fair was very successful for Nebraska Junior Angus Association members and I would like to congratulate them on all their hard work and dedication showing through in the show ring. Also, the open show was very well represented, and I would also like to congratulate all participants in that as well. During our state meeting, we appointed committees for the winter show and semen auction. If you are interested in helping with the winter show, please contact Kyra Meyer. If you are interested in helping with the semen auction or would like to donate, please contact either Caitlin Nelson or Chase Cotton.

The annual Winter Preview show will take place on Sunday, December 2nd in Kearney Nebraska. Our junior meeting will be held on Saturday, December 1st. The semen auction will be

held in conjunction with the Nebraska Angus Association’s annual banquet on December 1st. This is one of my favorite shows of the year as it’s always my first of the new show season; which allows heifers to get out into the ring for the first time with some of my closest friends.

State Show this year will be changing location as it is heading to North Platte. We are very excited to be able to show in a new venue and I’m excited to see everyone there! Also, the 2019 National Junior Angus Show is heading back to Louisville, Kentucky which is one of my favorite locations.

Jaclyn Upperman, Director of Events and Education, has reached out to Tiffany and Brian Stoller about hosting the National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island in 2021. At the state fair meeting, the juniors voted on placing a bid to host again in 2021.

Wrapping up on a successful year and show season, I am looking forward to all the great things to come in 2019!

yAtt SMith Osceola, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 10-year-old son of Allen and Heather Smith is a member of the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association.

He has participated in local and national shows. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Wyatt participated in the photography, poster, skillathon, quiz bowl, and graphic design contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. He also participated in the mentoring program in 2017 and 2018.

He has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) and consigned cattle at the Hay Country Bull Sale.

The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

018 wRAp up This year’s Husker Harvest Days exhibit was a bit more challenging for exhibitors due to the massive amount of infrastructure changes on the show grounds. Our exhibitors were greeted with a newly paved street in front of our lot, a new street number (First Street instead of Tenth Street, and thus a new Lot Number, 162 instead of Lot 1058); a new 90 foot tall light pole just Northwest of our exhibit (yes it provided more than ample light in the predawn hours); and a six foot tall fence on the back side of our lot (yes this hampered setup and our show logistics). The new drainage system was not tested as not a measurable drop of rain fell during this year’s show.

Due to the new permanent chain link fence on the back of our exhibit, which essentially excluded access from North road, our cattle needed to be unloaded on the front of the lot and we lost some storage space at the back of our lot. Because of the changes that were published earlier this year, we

were able to negotiate with show management, a shared lot between cattle association exhibits which allowed for extra tie pen space and trailer and tack storage. While not the “easy access” that we used to have, we are thankful for the willingness of show management to adapt lot space for the livestock exhibitors.

Six members chose to display cattle under the big top tent: Lazy Black Diamond Ranch of Palmer, McConnell Angus of Dix; SC Cattle of Osceola, Dethlefs Angus Ranch of Ravenna, Sandstone Prairie Ranch of Grand Island and Schulte Angus Ranch of Kearney. We appreciate all of these members and their time commitment to the success of this year’s show. We look forward to filling the tent with quality cattle in years to come.

Hello Angus Enthusiasts,

he Nebraska Angus Auxiliary was reestablished with the purpose of assisting the Nebraska Angus Association as well as the Nebraska Junior Angus Association when requested.

The current membership is small and providing assistance is difficult at times. Your membership, input, and involvement are truly necessary to ensure the Auxiliary’s success.

The purpose of this Auxiliary shall be to have women residents of Nebraska, who are interested in the welfare of the Angus breed, meet for educational, promotional, social, and other functions of this organization.

Members of the Auxiliary shall uphold the purpose of the organization and pay dues in advance to the Secretary-Treasurer. Dues are as follows: ten dollars per year per member or one hundred dollars for lifetime per member.

The board is as follows: Cassie Hansen- President, Stephanie SchaferVice President, Teresa Keyes- Secretary, Lynnette Nelson- Treasurer, and Laurie Dethlefs- Advisor.

The Nebraska Angus Auxiliary will meet December 1, 2018, with location and time to be determined. The meeting agenda will include the election of 2018-2019 officers. Please plan on attending the meeting if you want to be more involved and have your ideas be heard.

2018 Painting the Brand

AiNtiNg the BRANd Certified Angus Beef Brand 40th Anniversary Celebration Since 1978, the Certified Angus Beef ® brand has signified a mark of distinction on restaurant menus and in grocery store meat cases. It all began 40 years ago with a group of family farmers and ranchers determined to create and, still today, bring the best Angus beef to the table. To celebrate their vision and dedication to quality, we’re painting 40 barns in rural communities across the country with the brand’s logo – celebrating both the milestone and people at the center of the brand’s success. Painting takes two to three days at each barn site. The first barn was painted the week of Jan. 15 in Ocala, Fla., at Baldwin Angus Ranch, located along the well-traveled Interstate 75.

The two barns in Nebraska were the one at Windmill Angus Ranch near Haigler along Hwy 6 and the Lienemann barn on US 77 near Princeton.

The journey ultimately concluding in October near the brand’s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio.

Few symbols represent vintage Americana like a barn, where farm life is centered from generation to generation and, oftentimes, celebrations held.

Each barn has a unique story, much like the Certified Angus Beef ® brand and family farmers and ranchers who raise Angus cattle. The Petersons and Lienemanns are representative of this heritage.

“This effort is a tangible symbol of the valuable, and interconnected, roles our partners play in guiding the Certified Angus Beef ® brand from farm to table,” says Tracey Erickson, vice president of marketing. “It’s an honor for us to join their efforts in honoring our roots: family farmers and ranchers who have always been at the heart of this brand.”

The gathering was one of 40 planned in 2018, as the Certified Angus Beef ® brand celebrates 40 years of bringing the best Angus beef to consumers. Painting the brand’s familiar logo on 40 barns across America is not just an old-school marketing approach, but a tip of the hat to the farmers and ranchers who created the brand in 1978 and lead it today, and a way to celebrate connections and community.

On July 2, guests, family and friends gathered at Windmill Angus Ranch, Haigler, Neb., to celebrate the painting of its barn with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand logo – the 21st stop of a cross-country journey. Farmers, family members, neighbors and other special guests shared a meal with the Peterson family as they watched paint dry.

Windmill Ranch, which former owner Elmer E. Hester (a prominent Hereford rancher in the 1940s) called Cotton Wood Ranch, turned into an Angus business the day George and Richard Peterson purchased it. With only 15 cows, the father and son duo started a successful farmstead that, three generations later, serves as the home of 600 Angus cattle in southwest Nebraska. Alex Peterson, Richard’s son, leads the charge today, as he, his wife, Michelle, and other family members enjoy showing cattle across the country, hosting an annual sale, which is coming up on its 45th year, and breeding heifers. Cattle from their ranch can be found in almost every state.

On Aug. 27, guests, family and friends gathered at Lienetics Ranch, Princeton, Neb., to celebrate the painting of its barn with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand logo – the 32nd stop of a cross-country journey. Trevor and Torri Lienemann, alongside son Taylon and daughters Maci, Sydni and Skylar, are first- generation Angus ranchers. In 1992, they purchased six cows from a local rancher and set out to begin a new family legacy. Since then, they have been working together

to expand and improve their cattle herd. Taylon has started his own herd and their oldest daughter is setting her sights on working in livestock genetics. “Honestly, we don’t know how we would have raised our children without cattle. The lessons learned, they span the spectrum of life,” Torri says.

The Lienemanns are passionate about the beef community, and frequently host guests and tours at their ranch.

“We weren’t born into ranching, we chose it,” says Torri. “After more than 20 years, I can’t imagine my life without it.”

The Lienemanns’ and Petersons’ barn was painted by Troy Freeman, of Free Sky Studios of Springfield, Ill. Freeman is an experienced mural and large-scale painter for businesses, cities and townships, amusement parks, schools, residences and more, as well as the illustrator of 15 books and the founder of a graphics and web design business. While painting barns for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand, he enjoys meeting farming families and learning more about their unique stories, while celebrating their shared goals and values.

ANNOuNCeS the teN NeBRASKA BReedeRS whO RegiSteRed the MOSt ANguS The 10 producers who registered the most Angus beef cattle in the state of Nebraska recorded a total of 5467 Angus with the American Angus Association® during fiscal year 2018, which ended Sept. 30, according to Allen Moczygemba, Association chief executive officer.

The 10 top recorders in Nebraska are: Connealy Angus Ranch, Whitman; T K Angus, Wood Lake; Danny Poss, Scotia; Spring Valley Ranch & Cattle LLC, Rose; Travis Krein, Harrison; Arlen J & Becky Sawyer, Bassett; Wagonhammer Angus Ranch, Albion; Krebs Ranch, Gordon; Carl Dethlefs & Sons, Rockville; Kory P Ostrand, Mason City.

Angus breeders across the nation in 2018 registered 327,067 head of Angus cattle. “Our growth this fiscal year continues to demonstrate strong demand for Angus genetics and solidifies our long-held position as a leader in the beef cattle industry,” Moczygemba says. “These results underscore our members’ commitment to providing genetic solutions to the beef cattle industry.”

Livestock Direct

The co-founder of LivestockDirect and a fourth-generation producer, Abram Mertz, and his brother, Lincoln grew up on their family’s diversified farm located in the heart of the Kansas flint hills. The operation, River Creek Farms, raises row crops and registered Simmental cattle. Through their own experiences marketing cattle, the brothers realized the seedstock cattle industry had a big problem. Printers around the country charged too much for black and white printing, while offering little to no customer service. In 2007, they set about fixing those problems - building a printing business for cattleman, by cattleman. Today, LivestockDirect serves over 500 seedstock producers around the United States annually, helping them print and mail over one million catalogs and counting.

Dr. Patsy Houghton, DVM

Patsy Houghton was reared on a large cow-calf operation near Tipton, KS. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State University, taught two years at California State University-Fresno, served two years as Youth and Education Manager for the American Simmental Association, and then obtained her Ph.D. from Purdue University. She held the KSU Northwest Extension Beef Specialist position four years, and then started Heartland Cattle Company near McCook, NE where she pioneered the concept of ‘Professional Heifer Development.’ Patsy served as co-chair of NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College for 11 years; received Kansas State University’s 2011 Distinguished Animal Sciences & Industry Alumnus Award; was named Purdue University’s College of Ag Distinguished Alumni in 2010 and was selected for Purdue’s prestigious Old Masters Mentoring Program in 2009. Patsy currently serves on the Board of Directors for the KSU Livestock and Meat Industry Council.
