Notes & News from Anne The Best Moments always happen Unexpectedly Since January 30, I have struggled to find the words to express my gratitude to the Kansas Angus Association for the honor I was bestowed of being inducted as the 2020 KAA Honorary Member. As I look back on the 17 years I have been your secretary/manager and my life time of being an Angus enthusiast and producer I can truly say this honor is the most humbling and unexpected experience I have had. I am blessed to have been born into the Angus business in south Louisiana and the journey it led me on to make my home in Kansas, to becoming a member of the KAA in the early 1990’s and its manager in 2004. Since becoming a KAA member and later its sec/mgr, I have sat with all of you during the annual banquet and was in awe of the Honorary Member presentations and the people and ranches that were honored, a group of people that exemplified the KAA’s honorary member criteria “Dedicated to those who, by work and deed, have contributed to the improvement of Angus cattle and the livestock industry in the state of Kansas.” To be a part of the group dating back to 1958 is such a humbling experience. Thank You to the board of directors who in December of 2003 hired me to become part of the team, to the members of KAA, Juniors and Auxiliary which many have become my friends and mentors. A special thank you to the Honorary Member committee who pulled the “surprise” off so completely with the help of John McCurry, Jeff Mafi and my family—my husband Mark, our sons Garrett and Clayton, my daughter in law Gretchen, my mother Vicki and sister Melanie. Even after the video started and I was watching photos of my life on the screen and hearing Garrett’s voice narrate it took me several minutes to realize what wasgoing on. When I heard committee member Mark Gardiner say “got ya” the surreal moment began to sink in. I should also apologize to the honorary committee members Damon New, Mark Gardiner and Randy and Varee McCabe for my relentless badgering of them when they were not putting forth a nominees name so I could begin my usual work with the nominee’s family to get a presentation pulled together and invite their family and friends to the banquet - they finally told me that due to Covid they decided not to make a presentation this year. Also appreciation to Melody McCurry and Madison Loschke who “stole” my camera when I walked away from my table prior to the presentation (there is a story there as I was quite confused when I could not find my camera and began to look for it every where in the banquet venue– those that know me know my camera is never far from me and I take a lot of photos at Angus events). I am thankful to have the photo below because of the “theft”. I will never be able to express in words what this honor means to me. I hope that my gratitude will continue to show in work and deed with my dedication to being an Angus breeder in Kansas and my work with the members of the KAA, KJAA and Auxiliary as we promote Angus cattle, beef , genetics and youth programs. In appreciation,
Anne Lampe, Kansas Angus Association Manager Kansas Angus News Editor , Kanasangus@wbsnet.org

CAB Launches #Restaurantchallenge Win Gift Cards, Help Your Favorite Spots Survive As the 2012 drought was to the cattleman, this pandemic has been to the restaurateur. The foodservice sector is one of the main demand drivers for U.S. beef. As everything from business travel to tourism was curtailed in the past year, it’s had trickle-back repercussions throughout the industry. 4 ▪ Kansas Angus News
The campaign celebrates special moments, highlights the hardship, and incentivizes dining–all with the goal of driving foodservice sales. It’s anchored by a 2-minute video that ends in calls to action: 1. Grab takeout 2. Dine in at a favorite steakhouse (if that is an option) 3. Buy gift cards 4. Share favorite memories on social media with the hashtag: #RestaurantChallenge “These actions—and small acts of kindness like tipping big, leaving a fivestar review or sharing social media posts—all add up,” says Deanna Walenciak, CAB vice president of brand marketing. From now through April 11, dine in or order carryout, post on Facebook or Instagram and use that official #RestaurantChallenge hashtag for a chance to win weekly $100 gift cards. “You also have a chance to make your tip go further,” she says. Tag a CAB partner restaurant in your post and each week during the campaign, selected restaurants will receive $2,500 for their staff. “Rare moments and memories are made in our favorite places to dine. It’s up to all of us to step up to support these places so that we can continue to celebrate life’s moments and keep local businesses alive,” Walenciak says. In challenging times, a little help goes a long way. It might seem like a tall task to help restaurants nationwide survive, and nobody can do it alone, she says. But small actions have a way of gaining momentum, the kind that could see restaurants through until their dining rooms are full again.

KJAA The Kansas Angus Futurity Junior Show was a success! We made some changes this year by allowing out of state Junior Angus exhibitors to enter and compete in the show. We had 115 entries from 6 different states, and 96 head competed in the show. I personally want to say congratulations to all the champions at the Kansas Angus Futurity. In addition, thank you to the advisors and the Kansas Angus Association for their support in trying the new format for the show. We had outstanding support from producers and companies for the T-shirt auction and raised about $18,000 to help KJAA. These funds will allow the juniors to continue to pay for the show expenses for the upcoming Kansas Angus Preview Show in June, next year’s Kansas Angus Futurity, future shows, or sponsorships through the KJAA. We appreciate the assistance in reaching our goals and becoming more fiscally sound. I also want to encourage high school seniors who are graduating this year to apply for the Kansas Angus Auxiliary and Angus Foundation scholarships. The Angus Foundation also offers scholarship for current college students. College can be a huge financial burden to many of us. However, through these organizations, some of the college expenses can be covered. Several KJAA members have been recipients of theses scholarships and are thankful for the assistance. Let me know if you need any guidance on filling out the applications. Let us look forward to warmer weather, a Happy Easter, and new adventures! Don’t forget to make plans to exhibit and participate in the Ks Junior Angus Preview Show June 5-6 in Hutchinson.
