7th Annual production Sale Fellow Cattlemen, Thank you for your interest in our 2022 Production Sale. We appreciate the opportunity to share our offering with you this year. Our goal is to produce two-year old range raised bulls that will look the same when they are pulled, as the day they were turned out. The genetics from these bulls will bring carcass merit, breed leading performance, and leave you with quality cattle that will work in your herd.

If you’ve been around us for long, you know we’ve relocated. Like we wrote on the front cover of this salebook, we may be new to the neighborhood, but we aren’t new to the cattle business. We’ve been raising quality Angus cattle for more than 70 years, we’re just doing it in a different place now. The goal had been to move the cow herd west for years with the encroachment of Omaha on our once quiet, rural landscape near Springfield. The time came in 2020 and we’ve used the last two years to get settled in Blaine County. Even before we moved, we were planning to go to selling twoyear old bulls to be able to develop them at a slower pace and make a more desirable product. We’re so happy to have made this transition and are thankful for the opportunity to raise our cattle in the Sandhills.

With the move to Brewster brought the welcomed addition of Frank and Suzzette Utter to the team. Frank has been instrumental in range management and the transition to a herd that is run as close to a commercial herd as possible.

We winter graze as much as feasible and supplement with cake for protein. In short, no feed wagon. No alfalfa. No corn. We have special thanks to John and Jessica Klooz, Buck Moon, and Kenny Neben, as well as the many neighbors who have welcomed us to the area. I also want to thank my daughters for their continued support and for the sharing of their many talents.

The cattle are available for inspection prior to the sale, just give us a call. We welcome visitors and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

HERD HEALTH All cattle selling are on a complete health program and bulls are certified to be virgin bulls or to have passed a negative trich test prior to the sale. The cattle have been vaccinated and dewormed.

All bulls have tested negative for BVDpi. Females selling are current on vaccinations and are ready to breed.

SEMEN TEST Every bull in the sale will have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE), but is guaranteed to pass before you turn him out. All bulls are guaranteed to be fertile. They were tested 8/31/21.

IDENTIFICATION OF CATTLE Ear tags on all sale cattle will correspond to lot numbers in this sale book.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Auction block announcements regarding the cattle selling in this sale take precedence over information listed in this sale book.

FOOD AND REFRESHMENTS A complimentary lunch will be served starting at 11:30 a.m.

RETAINED INTEREST Keyes Angus will retain a 1/3 semen interest in all bulls in this sale.

Guarantee

All bulls selling for $3000 or more are guaranteed for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bull. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following sale, less salvage value of the injured bull. A veterinarian must diagnose all injured bulls. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. ALL CLAIMS MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 15, 2022.

HISTORY OF KEYES ANGUS

In 1952, Clarence Keyes sold his dairy herd and began buying registered Angus cattle from breeders in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska. He became an active member of both the Northeast Nebraska and Southeast Nebraska Angus Associations due to his close proximity to both areas of Springfield, Nebraska. One of the first Angus bulls Clarence can remember buying was from Atwater Bros. of Albion.

One of the first show sales he went to was in Otoe County, Nebraska in 1955. The bull was placed near the bottom of the class in the show, but the cattlemen found him and he was nearly the top seller of the sale.

In the early 1960’s Clarence and Beulah began selling their bulls at the Norfolk Sale Barn on the third Thursday of every May. This continued into the 1990’s with their son, Kevin. Around 2000, the development of Omaha began to noticeably make the availability of farmland more difficult, and Kevin began expanding the cow herd. Kevin and Teresa made annual trips to Minnesota to her cousin’s annual production sales at Flying W and WR Bar Ranches. Several trips were made to TC Ranch to purchase herd bulls and replacement heifers. Sending pairs out to pasture in the sandhills for the summer allowed for the expansion to today’s current numbers.

In 2020, urban sprawl gave Kevin the opportunity to relocate the herd from Springfield to Brewster.

Today, Keyes Angus is operated by Kevin and Teresa Keyes with the assistance of Frank and Suzette Utter.

Kevin and Teresa’s daughters and their spouses also remain involved and are vital to the operation.

BULL DEVELOPMENT

These bulls were born and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

After fenceline weaning in October, they were moved to river meadows and were supplemented with 16% Bull Developer Cake. In May, the bulls were rotated from pasture to pasture, with no cake fed until September. We began offering free choice prairie hay in December. Free choice salt and mineral is always available.

Feeder’s Note

The last two year’s worth of steer crops from the ranch have been fed out at the Bar N Feedlots near Moville and Marcus, Iowa. Daughter Melissa’s husband Mark and his dad and brother have managed the care and feeding of these incredible groups of cattle. The steers are calm, hardy, and have no problem finding the bunk and putting weight on. Years of carcass data from previous steer groups have consistently shown Choice, Prime and Certified Angus Beef quality premiums. These bulls will help you produce calves that cattle feeders will come back year after year to buy again and you will enjoy going to the pasture to look at.

150 cOMMERCIAL BRED HEIFERS We purchased these heifers in April of 2020 from Arlan Paxton of Tryon, NE. They were gate cut from his replacement pen. The heifers had been running on swathed cane pivots for the winter. These heifers were bred and pastured east of Purdum, NE. In mid November, the grass got short and we began feeding corn silage, low-quality grass hay and distillers. On January 17th, the heifers were moved home to the ranch and put on winter pasture and two pounds of 30% cake until sale day.

EPD and $Value Descriptions CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED) -- expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BEPD) -- expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WEPD) -- expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YEPD) -- expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

MARBLING EPD (MARB) -- expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL MILK EPD (MILK) -- is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

RIBEYE AREA EPD (REA) -- expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

WEANED CALF VALUE ($W) -- an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

FEEDLOT VALUE ($F) -- an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

GRID VALUE ($G) -- an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

BEEF VALUE ($B) -- an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
