Don Johnson Angus 30th Annual Bull Salelog

Page 1

Welcome,

e Don Johnson Angus family is grateful for your time and interest in our 30th annual o ering. Our vision for producing bulls that bene t and maximize pro tability for commercial cattlemen is the guiding principle behind a phrase you’ll see multiple times in this catalog: “ e Cattlemen’s Caliber.” e strong market conditions and outlook for cattle producers have ampli ed the value of performance in weaned calves and fed cattle. Our goal is to maximize the annual value of those merchandised cattle without sacri cing the traits that build future generations of your cowherd. Fleshing ability, structural soundness, and consistent reproductive performance are attributes we place strong emphasis on within our herd and breeding program.

e patriarch of this operation, Don Johnson, was the foundation of these ambitions and principles. He truly put his heart and soul into this operation until the day he moved to his heavenly home. For a man who lived a full eighty-six years, it still seems he le us too soon on August 1, 2026. “ e Legacy Continues…” doesn’t begin with Angus cattle; its roots lie in Don’s passion for people. His genuine, kindhearted nature always le a lasting, positive impact on those fortunate enough to meet him. His gentle charisma made his conversations memorable, and his one-of-a-kind laugh could brighten a person’s day in seconds. Don was a talented cattleman who loved Angus cattle, but his true devotion was to his good friends and the people within this industry.

Don’s deepest devotion was to his family and his wife, Margie. He would be the rst to admit that, for many years, the bedrock of Don Johnson Angus was Margie Johnson. Don and Margie can be seen in the lineage and selection pressure of the cows behind this powerful o ering. Together, they built this operation on their strengths and compatibility. Whether in the pasture or in public, they were inseparable and united in their vision for how their cattle and operation needed to function. To them, success wasn’t measured by a sale-day average; they found their pride in watching their cattle succeed for good people.

is operation will miss Don Johnson for years to come, but we are committed to continuing his legacy of Angus cattle and his dedication to our customers.

We hope you can join us for a couple of Don’s favorites, pancakes and ice cream, on the evening of March 2nd. We appreciate your interest in our genetics and encourage you to visit our Facebook page, Don Johnson Angus, for sale updates and lot highlights. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of us below.

EPD TERMS

Expected Progeny Di erence (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database of the American Angus Association. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a di erence in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average di erence in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to rst-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the di erence in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as rst-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value Indexes, reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more pro t. e $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts pro tability di erences in progeny from conception to weaning by decreasing mature cow size and improving docility, foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with current production.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected di erence in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning.

Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average di erence in future progeny performance for postweaning feedlot merit (growth and feed e ciency) compared to progeny of other sires assuming producers retain ownership of cattle and sell on a carcass weight basis.

Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average di erence in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average di erences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. is index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, and market these animals on a qualitybased carcass grid.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a di erence in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in rst-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as rst-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Docility (Doc), is expressed as a di erence in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average di erence of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected di erence would not be realized.

Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP), is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas.

Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the di erences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. e remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the di erence in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the di erence in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the di erences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Resilient caught our attention as a Stellar son with strong foot quality, moderation of mature size, and advanced dataset than his sire. Although his phenotypical presence and maternal potency was our initial draw, his low birth weight and robust early growth proportioned our emphasis of making bulls to sire exceptional feeder cattle and keeper pen daughters.
