Welcome to the 2019 New Mexico State University, Department of Animal and Range Sciences Cattle Sale. This marks the 36th year that NMSU has been selling bulls and heifers to the public and we are proud of the relationships that have developed over the years with our customers. We strive to conduct research that meets the needs of New Mexican cattle producers and through that we feel that we have developed genetics that are well suited to the harsh environment of the Southwest and beyond. The proceeds from this sale go towards supporting the teaching mission of our department as well as outreach efforts with FFA and 4-H and research programs. Cattle are raised at two of our Agricultural Experiment Stations, the Chihuahuan Desert Range Research Center and the Corona Range and Livestock Research Center. These ranches are managed much like a typical ranch and are profit driven. Cows are provided supplement when needed but are not babied. If a calf requires treatment for any type of illness, they are not offered in the sale. Thirty-six years ago, we set out to produce bulls that would reduce labor requirements during calving and to date have some of the lowest birthweight EPDs in the industry. Likewise, the longevity of the bulls and their progeny is excellent. After weaning, bulls are moved to campus and are used in several of the courses offered by the department. Students spend many hours in the pens evaluating the bulls, learning how to assess structural correctness, balance, and muscling. In addition, students assist with various other tasks required to prepare bulls for the sale; including assisting with vaccinations, branding, breeding soundness exams, Trich and TB testing, and learn about low-stress animal handling. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Ramada Palms (575-526-4411) for Bull and Horse sale customers. The rate is $75 for Single Kings and Double Queens. Terms and Conditions of Sale • •

Terms of sale are cash. Payments must be made in full to the cashier immediately following the sale. Make all checks payable to NMSU. Master card, Visa and Discover Cards will be accepted. All registration papers will be mailed with signed transfer certificates and breeding certificates (when applicable) directly to the appropriate cattle association for transfer to the new owner. NMSU will pay the cost of transfer. It is the buyer’s responsibility to pay his/her own membership within the respective breed association. Please give the clerk the correct name and address of the person to whom the animal is to be transferred. The highest bidder is the buyer. If dispute arises between two or more bidders, advancement of the bid will occur among the disputing bidders. If advancement doesn’t occur, the animal shall go to the person whose bid the auctioneer last recognized.
Bulls will be sold to the highest bidder. A minimum bid of $2,000 will be accepted on bulls. A minimum bid of $1500 will be accepted on unregistered bulls. The buyer will assume all risks and expense of the animal after the close of the bid by the auctioneer. Bulls have been fertility tested and are guaranteed sound for breeding at time of purchase (i.e. Statement does not apply to yearling Brahman bulls). All effort has been made to insure correctness of the catalog. NMSU and auctioneer will assume responsibility for errors or omissions. Any known corrections will be made at sale time and take precedence over the catalog. All known defects of sale animals will be announced before the bidding begins. NMSU is not responsible for injuries sustained by persons attending the sale or by animals after they are sold. For international purchases, NMSU will provide health papers required for animal movement within the U.S. Any additional health test will be completed at the expense of the buyer. NMSU recommends international buyers hire an export agent. Animals purchased at this sale will be cared for by the seller, but at the buyer’s risk until 6:00 p.m., Sunday April 28, 2019, after which buyers will be charged $10 per bull per day for yardage and feed. Please contact us (Eric 575-646-1750) if you need to make arrangements for cattle to remain on campus for an extended period of time after the sale.

Ratio = Comparison of an individual to the average of all other individuals tested within the angus, Brangus, and Brahman breeds for a particular trait. The accuracy of the EPDs listed for yearling animals are minimal or P, meaning that since the bulls tested do not currently have offspring, their EPDs are based on their parent’s EPDs plus their own performance records.
