The CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team is excited to offer you the best bulls from the 2017-born calf crop produced by the registered Hereford and Angus seedstock cow herd at CSU’s Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC) in Fort Collins, Colo. This includes bulls from the two pens of Hereford and Angus bulls we took to the National Western Stock Show. We also have a great set of pregnant, black-hided commercial heifers to add to your herd. Many thanks to the ARDEC crew for their help with cattle management and sale-day needs. In addition to Dr. David Schafer, livestock manager, a number of undergraduate student employees care for the cattle at ARDEC. And, two permanent, full-time employees continue to support ARDEC’s mission, including Harry Clark, feedyard manager and Christina Nash, research and Feed Intake Unit (FIU) manager.

Finally, Dr. Milt Thomas is serving as the interim head for the Department of Animal Sciences while a national search for a permanent head is underway.

The department is excited to be opening the brand new JBS Global Food Innovation Center in Honor of Gary and Kay Smith on campus. This facility is adjacent to the Animal Sciences building and adds over 36,000 square feet, including a USDA-inspected harvest and processing facility, in-house café/retail store, 200-seat demonstration classroom, research kitchen, coolers, laboratories and more. Keep an eye out for the formal grand opening during spring 2019.

We Have A New Product – Older Age-Advantaged Bulls PAP Tested at 7,500-ft. Elevation!

After two years of hard work, we have successfully transitioned to selling older bulls (22 months of age) via an earlier bull sale. We now calve April-June and graze under center pivot using Management-intensive Grazing (MiG) until weaning. After weaning, bulls are tested for gain, feed efficiency, carcass traits and genomics prior to spending the summer grazing at 7,500-ft. elevation at Fort Lewis College’s Old Fort Ranch (Hesperus, Colo.) where they are PAP tested by Dr. Tim Holt. The bulls return to ARDEC mid fall to be prepared for sale, including testing for fertility and trichomoniasis (required of older bulls).

These age-advantaged bulls are ready to work and are able to cover more females – they have spent considerable time in range and mountain conditions. In addition, their PAP test accuracy is much improved since it was conducted at high elevation. More than 85 percent of the bulls had a PAP score of less than 45 mmHg (generally agreed to be the selection threshold for cattle going to high elevation).

Due to the extended timeframe from birth to sale, we are now able to develop the bulls at a slower rate. We also have reduced our cow herd wintering costs due to a better match of cow energy requirements with available grazeable forage. The biggest yearling ribeye area (15.4 sq. in.) bull in the sale and he has a moderate frame. There’s a lot of value in this bull.

Talk about an all-around bull! This guy has an 8 CED EPD with an impressive YW EPD. Plus, he has the highest REA EPD among Angus bulls in the sale.

Since 2017, the ARDEC cow herd has calved later (April-June) and grazed on a 212-acre center pivot as part of a long-term research project utilizing Management-intensive Grazing (MiG), led by Dr. Joe Brummer, CSU forage Extension specialist.

Seedstock Merchandising Team Greetings from the team, The 2018-2019 Colorado State University Seedstock Merchandising Team would like to thank you for your interest in and support of CSU’s 42nd Annual Bull & Heifer Sale. Since the beginning of the school year, the team has been busy selecting, preparing and training a group of 16 bulls to take to the 2019 National Western Stock Show. Additionally, the team has spent extensive time working with and photographing sale bulls and heifers for this sale. The Seedstock Team was also fortunate to attend the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) Mid-Winter Meeting in Denver, Colo., and the Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Trade Show in New Orleans, La. This sale is different from previous years due to a change in the Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center’s (ARDEC) calving season that caused the sale date to fall earlier in the season. We had to approach this year’s work differently, completing deadlines and commitments before attending the CCA and NCBA events.

We have had unforgettable experiences throughout and are thankful for the help we received from previous team members, CSU faculty and staff, and industry professionals. The 2018-2019 team would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, as well.

Sage Mijares Sage is an animal science major in her senior year. Growing up in northern New Mexico, she was raised on an operation that manages cow-calf, yearling and high-altitude bull programs.

Sage also participated in 4-H and owned a small Angus cattle herd with her siblings. She plans to pursue a career in livestock epidemiology and public health after CSU. As a Data Committee co-chair, she has enjoyed working with her teammates, coordinating data compilation and photography/videos for cattle in the sale, and building connections within the beef industry.

Regan O'Donnell Regan was born and raised in Milliken, Colo., and is an animal science/political science double major with a minor in legal studies. After gaining her degree, she plans to attend law school and hopes to serve as legal representation for a breed or livestock association. Growing up, her family owned a horse training business, and she spent many years showing horses across the country and now hopes to gain experience and become involved with the cattle industry. Regan serves as co-chair of the Events Committee and has worked to develop a team-wide promotional effort. She has enjoyed gaining more experience and making connections in the seedstock industry while representing CSU. 6

Kai Miranda Kai is an animal science/agribusiness major from Greeley, Colo. She grew up involved in 4-H and FFA, as well as working alongside her family and their cattle. Kai has her own small cattle herd, as well as a small show hog operation. She is involved in research, several student organizations, and is an Ag Ambassador for the college. After graduating, Kai is looking to pursue a career in bovine reproduction. As a cochair of the Written Committee, she has been busy putting together newsletters, advertisements and the sale catalog this year, as well as attending several industry events to promote CSU and network with industry leaders.

Allie Powell Allie is a senior from Bennett, Colo., majoring in animal science and agricultural literacy.

She got her start in agriculture by participating in the FFA Heifer Wrangle and NWSS Catch-a-Calf programs. She became further involved in 4-H and FFA during high school, cultivating her passion for agriculture. Allie wants to pursue a career in beef seedstock, public relations or event management industries. Being on the Events Committee, she has been preparing for CSU to participate in several industry events, including the NWSS, Colorado Cattlemen’s and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association conventions and the annual bull sale. She has enjoyed gaining more experience in these areas, as well as learning more about the seedstock industry.

Farris Smith Farris is a senior majoring in animal science and minoring in agricultural business. She grew up on her family’s commercial cow-calf operation in Northern California. She was an active member in 4-H for 12 years showing cattle. Farris is also a member of the CSU Rodeo Team, for which she’s competed for three years. Following graduation, she plans to focus her career in cattle reproduction while continuing to grow her family’s herd. Being a co-chair of the Hands-On committee, she has worked with her teammates to prepare cattle for the NWSS and bull sale. Mary Thomas Mary is an animal science student minoring in business administration. She was raised in Pozo, Calif., helping her family manage a cattle ranch, in addition to their own small Angus-cross cowherd. She also spent time showing various species of livestock. Mary had the opportunity to work with Leachman Cattle of Colorado, where she learned more about the seedstock industry. As co-chair of the Written Committee, Mary has been learning about advertising and promoting CSU genetics and the beef cattle industry. It has been exciting for her to learn and work with her teammates, and make lasting connections in agriculture.

2018-2019 CSU Seedstock Team

Keegan Taylor Keegan is a junior animal science student at CSU. His appreciation for the livestock industry stemmed from his family’s small farm where they raised chickens and broilers in New Mexico.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he is hoping to become a large animal veterinarian.

Through his time in the Animal Science Department, he has developed a passion for cattle and the industry surrounding them. His particular interest lies in seedstock cattle, due to their influence on genetic improvement in this industry. As co-chair of the Hands-On Committee, Keegan has spent considerable time with his teammates, gaining hands-on experience preparing cattle for the National Western Stock Show and the bull sale. He also looks forward to making connections in the industry he is passionate about.

Travis Walsh Travis is a senior majoring in animal science. He grew up in Craig, Colo., but spent much of his time on his family’s ranch in Montrose, Colo. Growing up, he was very involved in 4-H and FFA. At CSU, Travis has had the opportunity to become a member of Farmhouse Fraternity, an Animal Science Steward for the department and a member of various other organizations within the college. Travis plans to become a rural veterinarian after college. He has been thrilled to be a co-chair of the Data Committee for the Seedstock Team and looks forward to interacting with industry professionals at the CSU bull sale and other industry events this year.

CSU Livestock Judging Team Colorado State University’s Livestock Judging program dates back to 1914, when the first team competed at the National Western Stock Show. Students have the opportunity to represent CSU at the most prestigious contests in the nation and travel to nationally recognized livestock shows. CSU Meat Judging Team The CSU Meat Judging Program is well known worldwide in the meat science discipline, as well as for winning national meat judging championships and other intercollegiate meat judging competitions. CSU Collegiate Livestock Club The CSU Collegiate Livestock Club is an organization of young men and women who share an interest in promoting and learning about the livestock industry. Formerly the Collegiate Cattlemen Organization, Collegiate Livestock Club members work with the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), Colorado Cattlewomen’s Association (CCW) and Colorado Livestock Association (CLA) to promote agriculture and encourage members’ personal and professional development. The club’s goal is to develop the next generation of livestock industry leaders through various means, including partnering with the Colorado Beef Council during the National Western Stock Show where members will interact with the public about the value and importance of beef in Colorado. In addition, club members assist in educating and exposing hundreds of local elementary students to the livestock industry, and they attend the CCA Mid-Winter Meeting, the CCA and CLA Annual Conventions and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention and Trade Show.

CSU Seedstock Merchandising Team Since 2003, the Seedstock Team has overseen the annual marketing of the bulls and heifers produced from the CSU ARDEC Angus and Hereford cow herd. In the past, this sale has been held in the spring, selling 13-month-old bulls. Beginning this year, due to a change in CSU’s calving season, the sale will be held in February, selling 22-month-old bulls.

This select group of eight undergraduate students is the result of a formal application and interview process. Once selected, team members oversee all preparations for the annual production sale, including animal selection, performance data collection, advertising, promotion and animal preparation. In addition, students show pens of cattle at the National Western Stock Show and represent CSU at events, including Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Mid-Winter Meeting and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Annual Convention. This combination of experiences provides students with a real-world, hands-on learning environment and an opportunity to network within the beef cattle industry.

Our Program’s Areas of Focus Colorado State University has operated a campus-based seedstock cow herd, including registered Hereford and Angus cattle, for more than 110 years. Over time, this program has maintained its focus on basic principles of profitable cow-calf production. Through our seedstock program, we aim to supply cow-calf producers with bulls that provide our customers with: 1) Moderate frames, fleshing ability, maternal traits and reasonable milk production.

2) Curve-bending growth – Above breed average for growth while below breed average for calving ease and birth weight.

3) Built-in calving ease – We want our customers to have live calves at birth. Percent calf crop (number of calves weaned versus number of cows exposed) is the No. 1 factor influencing cow-calf income.

4) Good dispositions – The safety of our students (and customers) around these cattle is a priority.

5) Age-advantaged bulls – Older bulls (22-months) are lower risk and can breed more cows per season.

6) Access to accurate, objective data – We provide buyers (and our students) with high-quality data • Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) – All bulls were PAP tested at 7,500-ft., by Dr. Tim Holt.

• Genomically enhanced EPDs – To improve EPD accuracy, all bulls were evaluated by GeneSeek®, who generously provided CSU with financial support for this testing.

• Feed efficiency – All bulls were individually tested in our Feed Intake Unit (GrowSafe).

• Ultrasound scans – Yearling bulls were evaluated for marbling and ribeye area traits.

• Fertility and disease – All bulls had a breeding soundness exam (BSE), trichomoniasis test (required of older bulls) and BVD-PI test conducted by the CSU Veterinary School.

7) Great customer service – Beyond supplying premium genetics, we are also dedicated to providing high-quality service.

8) Great students – although last on this list, our No. 1 priority at CSU is to produce top-notch graduates who are well educated in the principles of profitable beef cattle production. RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST – CSU is retaining

a ½ semen revenue interest on all bulls, unless otherwise announced, so that CSU can sample some of the bulls in the sale. The buyer will have full and immediate possession of the bull, 100% salvage value, and ½ interest in future semen sales. The retained semen-only interest, which is a royalty interest that entitles CSU to ½ of the revenues of any future semen sales, will be owned by CSU and will include the right to collect semen on the bull at CSU’s expense and the buyer’s convenience.
