Welcome to the 25th Annual Bet On Red Sale, This year is truly a special event, marking the 25th Anniversary of the Bet on Red Sale! The Western States Red Angus Association Board of Directors has worked incredibly hard over the last year to ensure that this is an event that none of us will soon forget. If there’s any year I could encourage you all to make the trip to Reno, Nevada, this would definitely be the year.

It is a true privilege to have the opportunity to work with the best Red Angus breeders in the country, in helping to execute the Bet on Red Sale. A genuine highlight of my year is the chance to visit with each and every one of you; to get to know your families, programs, and goals a bit better and talk about the exciting future ahead.

We are so blessed to be a part of a breed that is experiencing positive and rampant growth. The demand for Red Angus cattle is stronger than it has ever been. Cattle prices are experiencing positive movement, and the future looks bright in the cattle markets for the next few years. There may be no better time to find that up-andcoming donor or acquire a few breed-leading replacements to strengthen the herd and provide high quality bulls to market over the next few years. Last year was certainly a record-breaking year for the sale, as a heifer calf consignment from Feddes Red Angus topped the sale at $30,000, selling to the Hansine Ranch of Pierre, SD. That Resource daughter had admirers from every corner of the country!

As the consignments have funneled in, and with a few herd visits taken, I can without a doubt say this year’s Bet on Red will prove to be the best event to date. I am humbled by the willingness of so many long-standing, reputable ranches to consign their very best replacement females to the auction block in Reno. Top quality cattle come from top quality breeders, and I would challenge you to find a better set of cattle, embryos, and semen anywhere in the country. This catalog is packed full of some of the best Red Angus cattle you can find. We welcome all to a weekend packed full of great people, and breed-leading Red Angus cattle.

She is the product of a deliberate attempt on our part to obtain cows from the Brown Ranch that were granddaughters of KRN Reba’s Robin who produced the $65,000 heifer that sold at the NILE and also produced Grand Canyon and Major League.

What’s more, she is out of 9-Mile Franchise 8942, the top ageadvantaged bull from their fall-calving program and a bull sporting a 3% Gridmaster score plus 8% for weaning and 2% for yearling weight. 205 is stylish, with exceptional width and depth. This year Rose McPhee wanted to do something very special in memory of her Granny Nellie McPhee who went to be with the Lord and the love of her life Roy McPhee June 25th 2022. Roy and Nellie McPhee were huge supporters every year of Bet on Red since the start, whether it was consigning animals or purchasing animals.

Roy & Nellie instilled that same generosity in Rose and the value of giving back. Rose has selected this beautiful powerhouse of spring heifer calf right from the heart of her personal herd, to donate to raise funds for the futurity in memory of her Granny. The proceeds from Lot D2 will fund the Roy McPhee Memorial Futurity.

Lot 2 Again, 208 comes from a heifer crop we think is our best ever. This young lady has caught our eye almost since the day she was born. What’s more she is from the 8-year old Traveler cow which just keeps producing exceptional calves year after year. She traces back to Damar Connie and like her pen-mate is out of Great Basin whose progeny have consistently been well-received. She offers a 4% marbling score and is in the upper one-third for ProS, Gridmaster, and calving ease direct.

She weaned at 736 pounds. Like our other heifer, she spent most of the summer in the mountains, so she’s only been home for several months.

Lot 3 Tidybee 211K is one of the most exciting females we have ever produced, crossing all of our favorite sires… and you can tell she likes herself! The Tidybee clan is well known for its flashy, up headed, deep bodied look in a dark red package, and 211K is exactly that.

Her dam is an incredible young cow out of the many time champion One of a Kind 6129. That cow’s first calf by Rebelde 8703 was a class/ reserve division winner in Reno last year and will be back as a powerful bred heifer this year.

Her sire is 9 Mile Enterprise 8180, the $37,000, big bodied, easy fleshing son of Franchise 6305, and you can see his influence all over this female. Lot 5 Without a doubt, two of the most exciting heifers our program has ever produced lie here in Lots 5 & 6. BARH Kokomo 237 is one of the very first daughters marketed from our new herd sire, H/H Mount Up 0026; a bull that in his first calf crop, has convinced those with his progeny that he’s a calving ease bull worth going back to. Kokomo is a stunning heifer calf, beautiful through her front-end, and exploding there back with power and shape. She matches that power at the ground with a big leg, uniform in bone, and is truly flexible through each joint, allowing that power and punch to glide through the grass. With extra presence and a high head carriage, she’s hard not to admire. Lot 11 Clark Rosebud 1914-2243 is a very complete heifer both phenotypically and on paper. She carries great depth of body and capacity in a very attractive, feminine package. She stems from our very maternal Rosebud cow family which has produced many broody, productive, problem free cows in our herd.

This heifer’s dam is a beautiful 3yr old Seneca daughter who is doing a great job. She has an excellent udder and problem free feet. We are really liking what we are seeing in our Seneca daughters -they are looking to be some really good cows.

2243 is sired by the well-known Bieber Deep End. We really appreciate the style of our Deep End calves with their added performance and end product merit. We are very pleased with how he has matched on some of our cow families, and we think this heifer is a great example of that.

Lot 17 When Garrett came out I hoped he would not find this heifer or her sister. We’ve been watching Clark Mattie 1201-1401 raise herd bulls, top heifers and a son standing at ABS for the last 6 years. When we had the opportunity to purchase embryos on her we jumped on it and this heifer is why. We were even more excited to be able to get embryos by Resource 137E whose progeny has taken the breed by storm. The phenotype she passes down is amazing. You could travel all over the country and not find a cow with better feet, legs and udder. 2092 has a gorgeous front end, huge rib shape and dimension and follows it up with just the right amount of rear quarter. This is one exciting genetic combination. We have a full brother to 2092 that will be a bull sale headliner next spring. We have no doubt this heifer will end up in a donor pen somewhere and we would like to reserve the right to one future flush at our expense and the buyer’s convenience.

She stems from the famed Rachel cow that was the founding donor dam in Kurt Rich’s herd in Iowa with over 70 head of progeny to her credit.

Lot 33 Tamara 2911 comes out of a heifer we bought here in 2019 from Mabee’s Red Angus. 90-11G has turned out to be a great cow with a good udder and feet, she produced a really soggy and stout made heifer last year. 2911 is out of Lost Crk Don Julio, who is injecting stout and big hipped cattle in our herd. He is also a half brother to the Lot 27, Jose Cuervo daughter, we sold last year.

2911 follows that same suit as her sister. She is very docile, making her a great opportunity for a junior. She is one that is hard to find a hole in as she ties a lot together phenotypically.

She is really balanced from start to finish, ultra feminine, exceptional rib expression and does not disappoint when you get behind her.

Lot 44 There is always an aura of anticipation when the Raisland’s bring one to town, and not to disappoint, here is one of their best heifers yet!

Lakota 201 is a dark, cherry red powerhouse heifer that stood out like a sore thumb amongst their calves this summer. This is one that can be competitive on the tanbark but has the genetic prowess to go on and raise a bigtime herd bull or replacement heifer. Her sire, KJL/CLZB Complete 7000E, was the talk of the town back in ’18 when he topped the Red Angus bull sales for a whopping $180,000. He now has around 500 head of progeny to his record and an EPD proof that is still off the charts. Now deceased and little to no semen available, Complete daughters like this one are a rare commodity.

Her dam, Lakota 835, is a top young Titonka daughter that has raised her second replacement quality heifer in a row, the first being a beautiful Quarterback daughter the Raisland’s retained in the herd. Maternally she stems back to a foundation Grand Canyon daughter that is also the maternal power behind the popular ST Genetics AI sire, PIE Just Right 540.

Lot 47 From a dam out of the Dunn cow family and sired by Brown Top Tier G242 this yearling heifer has the looks and pedigree to excite any breeder. RRR J187 is an outcross with a feminine appearance and solid set of EPDs. It is hard to tell from her bold structure and deep body that she was ranch raised alongside the commercial herd. She is a high-performance heifer that puts everything together in a sound made, big boned and massive rib shape package. The dam of this heifer is a direct daughter of Mulberry. Mulberry semen is no longer available; he is siring outstanding progeny that are low maintenance, easy fleshing cattle. They have moderate birth weights and his daughters have perfect udders. Our Lady in Red Cow Family has been the matriarch for our Red Angus program. Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth.

Research Confirmation Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.

Rancher Trusted While market research validates the price advantage of Red Angus heifers, ranchers have tested and trusted her worth on the range for years. Red Angus females are desirable as replacement heifers because they mature into productive mother cows that reward producers with extra dollars in their pockets on sale day.

The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.

Red Angus cows have gained ranchers’ trust as a complete package through fertility, eshing ability, good disposition, longevity and excellent overall production. They produce feeder calves that earn premiums in the yard and on the rail through docility, feed efciency, conversion and carcass merit.

They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.

Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring protability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. ■
