PAP Testing and High Elevation PAP testing is a great tool for cattlemen running cattle at elevations above 6000 feet to help control a condition known as Brisket Disease (Dropsy or High Mountain Disease). A high PAP measurement (>49 mmHg), regardless of age or altitude of the test, is a very accurate predictor of a high PAP measurement later in life. Therefore, one can assume that such an animal has a high likelihood of developing HMD if kept at high altitude.

In order to effectively reduce the instance of Brisket, bulls should be PAP tested above 6800 feet and out of cow herd ran above 6800 feet throughout a high stress period. (late fall and or early winter) Important factors to know when considering the PAP score: 1. Elevation of test PAP tests performed at 6800 feet and above will accurately predict which cattle can survive at higher elevations.

2. How long at elevation prior to test.

Cattle must be at elevation of PAP test for a minimum of 21days. The longer the better.

3. Vet performing test.

PAP testing is a very intricate procedure. The accuracy of the test is only as good as the technician and his equipment. We would advise technicians be trained by or approved by Dr. Tim Holt, DVM, the master of PAP testing and Brisket Disease. PAP Testing Recommendations The PAP test is the best tool currently available for identifying animals predisposed to Brisket disease. However, it is not 100% and should not be used as such.
