The Steele Land & Livestock “Cattleman’s Sort” Story 32 years ago, my wife Lynette and I started a purebred Angus herd in SW Iowa under the name of Steele Land & Livestock, The SLL Brand. It started with 16 cows and our f irst bull sale. The excitement of selling our f irst bull to a neighbor was incredible and we started down this very rewarding path. Several years later, my veterinarian suggested we sell a few heifers in our production sale and WOW, we sold a heifer for $3250 which was an incredible amount of money to us. The bulls that day averaged $2400 which was very solid for the times we were in.

In January of 2014, a mutual f riend and the good Lord introduced Lynette and me to a now, dear f riend, Luke Wood, and his family. They were in search of a Simmental show heifer and we had a Broker daughter that went on to be named Elsa. Doug and Lynette had raised the female and Luke was in search of “the one” Simmental show heifer for his daughter Abby. I’m sure none of us knew it at the time but a deep and rewarding f riendship was starting to be born, “The CS brand”. Elsa created a bond that our families would cherish to this day and into the future. It had nothing to do with the championships she won. It had everything to do with a shared vision that our 2 families had. Our vision started on a cold January morning in a small pen and is now coming to you in a bull sale and female sale this February 4th.

In our program of shared vision, you will f ind phenotypically correct cattle that have a balanced EPD approach. First and foremost, we expect cattle that will be sound-footed, set down on a great set of feet and legs, have real red meat and fleshing ability to work in all environments. We expect our cattle to travel big pastures and f ields without issue and do so while producing a healthy vigorous calf that weans heavy, feeds well, and has the carcass merit that our industry demands.

We made the decision this year to only offer 2-year-old and aged fall bulls in our production sale. There are many advantages to us and our valued customers with this approach.

For us, we can calve later in the spring, develop the bulls over time and market a top-end product that can go right to work. For our valued customers, you can put the bulls in big pastures, with lots of cows and peace of mind without the worry of the yearling bull falling apart or getting hurt by other bulls in the pasture or the boss cow. They are easier to maintain in bigger traps and don’t require the resources of growing to a mature size after the breeding season. Care and Feeding

Your bulls may be kept and cared for until April 15th with arrangements following the sale. If you choose to have us care for the bulls, we ask that your bulls be picked up before that time. If you need to make other arrangements, please contact Doug or Luke.

Semen Interest

Steele Land & Livestock is selling 100% of all of the bulls in this sale unless noted otherwise in the sale catalog or on the auction block. Full possession and full salvage value sells on all bulls. Steele Land & Livestock will contact the new owner if we would like to collect semen and it will be done at the new owner’s convenience and SLL expense if noted on individual bulls. We believe in these bulls and their value to the industry enough that they will not only make a profitable impact to your herd, but go on to impact many herds throughout the beef industry.

Loss of Use Policy

SLL will guarantee your purchases for the first 60 days of the breeding season. If your bull becomes unusable during the breeding season, inform us and we will make it right with either a replacement bull or credit toward a bull at next year’s sale. Any salvage value will be applied to next year’s credit or traded with the replacement bull.

Herd Health

The bulls have a complete vaccination record, and they will be fertility tested, Trich tested and guaranteed sound by Dr. Alan Farnsworth. Vaccination includes 2 rounds of 7 way with blackleg; enforce 3 and BVD with Pasturella along with a booster of IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV BVD P13, BRSV; 2 rounds of Ivermectin injectable and Pyrethoid pour on as needed throughout the season. The final vaccination is Bovishield Gold 4 VL 5 prior to the sale.

Feeding and selection program for The Cattleman’s Sort Bulls 2022 The SLL bulls are developed to be long-term breeding bulls in purebred and commercial programs across a wide array of grass and management environments.

These animals will thrive on southern Iowa fescue, Flint Hills native, and cool season grass; as well as anything in between. They have been tested everywhere from Idaho to Georgia, and Texas to Canada; in the 32 years, we have been providing seedstock to our customers.

The 2-year-old and fall bulls and females are fed a high fiber 48-52 Mcal diet after weaning. Feed costs have increased across the country, so no creep feed is offered to the calves. High fiber, low grain diets develop bulls and females for the long term, keeping the feet and legs good as well as keeping them on a forage-based diet that will make an easy transition back to forage-based and grass diets during the breeding season.

The selection process is stringent as well. From birth to weaning, to yearling, to aged, the bulls and females are scrutinized for calving ease, calf vigor, weaning performance, yearling growth, feet shape and function, body type, and a real-world bull and female look that fits our industry. You will find bulls and females that will produce sale-topping calves and seedstock that have stability in your herd. The cow families have been proven over the decades with a very non-forgiving selection process as well. They are expected to produce a high-value calf every year without exception. SLL is truly a generational SORT in all phases of the beef business and the best are at this sale for your evaluation.

As my daughter was introducing her now husband to the family farming operation, Mark quickly picked her out in the pasture. She is very femine with the Angus brood cow look. 3055 has exceptional feet and legs with an udder that has stood the test of time and having 8 calves. We finally put her into the ET program to create daughters. We need more like her. Phenotype and longevity are often overlooked in the race to create higher EPD numbers, yet it continues to be the most important profibility factor in commecial cow operations. A cow that stays in the herd and has a calf early in the calving cycle for 8-10 years is the goal.

The E1 Weighmaster cattle have been a staple of our commecial and registered operation for several years now.

This is a bull that has stood the test of time. He has run pastures in Iowa and Kansas, spring and fall, fescue and Flint Hills and has never weakened. He looks as good gathering day as he does turn out day. He stays in great shape, maintains superior muscle shape and has excellent feet and legs. He truly has done it all. The bulls and the female in this sale carrying his genetics will go on and produce in all facets of the industry. Little did we know that when E1 was born, he and his dam were destined to leave a mark on our program and the program of so many other breeders. 5001 descends from the same cow as J75, out lot 1 bull. It’s the continuing story of Princess 3055. The bull business is, what we believe, always about superior cows. They leave their imprints on the herd for many generations and produce the ‘right kind’ no matter what era we are in. E1 cattle are born easily, nurse vigorously, grow extremly well, hang excellent carcasses and put daughters back in the herd that stay the course for years to come.

She kept a great udder and sound under carriage until she went to greener pastures. She will be represented in pedigrees as the Dam and Granddam of many cattle in this sale. As always, there will be cattle from the very popular Keymura Katy Cow Family that has been an industry leader in many herds across the Midwest, Cows that keep you in business and profitable in good times and tough time alike. In the Simmental division, we are offering bulls from legends in the industry. These bulls will be sired by W/C Double Down, DMCC/Wood Fully Loaded, Pays to Believe and Broker. This sire line-up is not only breed leading but most importantly, SLL “Cattleman’s Sort” kind.
