Welcome to our 19th Annual Sale! “The times they are a changin’ ”- Bob Dylan The only constant is change, and we’re no exception. Our new normal has been dealing with COVID, political change, tax change (?), families growing & changing and operations expanding & growing. That sounds like enough for now, doesn’t it? So what’s been going on here at our ranches? Well, a couple of major things. Firstly, Barb & Joe are finally majority owners of Downey Ranch. Barb made it her focus during her term as KLA president to get folks moving on their transition planning, which is so much more than just tax planning. Every one of us has worked hard to build our operations. It would be a shame if those operations ceased to exist because of lack of planning. If you love your family, the land and the cattle, take action NOW, before it’s too late. Enough said. There was another marriage this past year. Clay & Shannon Kniebel tied the knot in January. You’ll remember Clay is back home in the operation and glad to have Shannon as his partner. Welcome to the family! In other exciting news, Cassie (Kniebel) and Dustin Aherin are expecting their first child. Dustin & Cassie are based in St. Louis and very involved in their careers, although they always find time get back for the sale! Joe & Barb’s daughters are both in school, with Anna finishing up her EMT course while Laura’s a senior at KSU (already?!) and considering a run at vet school. Stay tuned! Additionally, Laura wrapped up her Jr. Angus & Simmental career. Both ladies are now involved in helping other juniors develop successful careers. In the interim, we were fortunate to have Ross Catlin, a Manhattan fireman (referred to us by a fellow fireman, neighbor and long-time customer—thanks Grady!) join us part-time. His calm, competent & good-natured help really saved us this summer! Finally, KCC’s Matt Harrison got engaged and he and his fiancée will be heading to her family operation in TX come December. Matt has been like family to Kevin & Mary Ann and all of us will miss him. Best of luck Matt & Nicole as you start your new life! And with that, the only other constant besides change is the cattle. We are thoughtfully & deliberately growing our operations to bring you more of what we’re known for—solid, productive range cattle that are reproductively & functionally sound, that can go on to make great females or money-making fat cattle. It doesn’t come easy or quick, but most things worthwhile in life don’t. Be assured, we will never sacrifice quality for quantity as we grow, because as we’ve always said, we’re in it for the long haul: JUST LIKE YOU. How about another big change? While we have been offering private treaty sales in the spring for a couple of years now, we are moving towards a more formalized spring sale. Every year, we have more & more demand for bulls in the spring, and that is driving this move. At this time, the exact process is still in flux. We expect to start with an open house format for a year or two, but a spring production sale is in the offing. Watch for this exciting new development. We will continue to offer age -advantaged bulls like always in addition to yearling bulls. And last but NEVER least, we are nothing without you— our friends and customers. We are so grateful and honored to see you back, year after year. Whether you’ve been with us from before we even had a sale, or you’re new to the “family,” we look forward to continuing to improve and grow our operations together.

60 KCC & DRI Commercial Bred Heifers
KCC and DRI are pleased to offer 60 bred heifers to calve next spring. They represent the top of our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kept heifers that were neither too big nor too small, were born in the 1st 1/2 of the season, had good temperaments, were good performers, and were structurally correct, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. We are offering you the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Heifers are bred to calving ease Black Angus (DRI) and Red Angus (KCC). The heifers have all their shots, & have been dewormed. Complete information on each heifer will be available on a supplement sheet online and at the sale. Videos of each lot will be online before the sale too. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring. THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON ALL HEIFERS: These are heart of our herd heifers. Performance Data • BW—Bull’s birth weight as adjusted by the American Angus Association or Red Angus Association. • WW—Bull’s weaning weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 205 days • YW—Bull’s yearling weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days • Scrotal—Bulls scrotal circumference in centimeters adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days of age (1 year) Performance EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) • CED- Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. • BW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny when compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. • WW & YW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning/yearling growth to his progeny compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. • Maternal/Reproductive EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) • Scrotal-Expressed in centimeters, it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to the progeny of an average sire in the breed. Available for BLACK ANGUS ONLY. • Milk-Also called Weaning Wt Maternal, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. In other words, it is that part of WW attributed to mi and mothering ability. It is compared to daughters of an average bull. • Stayability-The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd at least 6 years. The EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Available for Red Angus, Red & Black SmAn ONLY. • Heifer Pregnancy (HPG or HP) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. • ME-predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER! Red Angus & Red SmAn ONLY. • Carcass EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) • CW-Carcass weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. • Marbling-expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. • REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to other sires. • BF or Fat– expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Indexes Red Angus & Red SmAn ONLY: • HB—Herd Builder A maternal selection index that predicts economic differences for traits important from conception to weaning. • GM-Grid Master a selection index that predicts economic differences in terminal only calves post-weaning. GM places selection pressure on growth, Feedyard performance and carcass characteristics. Expressed in $/head. • ProS–Profitability & Sustainability is an all purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments. This assumes you’re keeping replacement heifers and feeding out all others and selling on a grid. Uses HP, Stay, mature wt, DMI and carcass traits. Expressed in $/hd. Black Angus ONLY: • Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires • Combined Value ($C) combines both Terminal & Maternal traits into one index. Not real wild about this one as it doesn’t tell you which way you’re going. • Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. • Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. Includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. • Beef Value ($B), a TERMINAL index value expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Black SmAn ONLY: • All Purpose Index (API)- Evaluates sire for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed. Not real wild about this one either. • Terminal Index (TI)- Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed.

Head spinning? Try The STAR SYSTEM! Simplify your life with “The Star System” On all our bulls, you’ll see a box of stars. We get tough and you’ll see 1 and 2 star bulls (still solid bulls!) in the catalog. We wanted to accentuate differences in bulls. This lets us take multiple EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they’re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother’s history all combine to make him one we wouldn’t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we’d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we’re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc. into account. That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam or we don’t have a lot of experience with his sire. For carcass, 3 & 4 are improvers, 2 is average. Growth stars are similar, but remember, more growth doesn’t always mean more $$ in your pocket. Optimum and maximum are often 2 different things. A 2-star growth bull may be exactly what you need. Remember: 2 stars is average, 3 stars is above average and 4 stars is exceptional.
Actual Performance, Genomics, and EPDs EPDs take into account individual performance, genomics & ancestry across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual’s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs (in general) a better indicator of that animal’s genetic abilities than actual performance. In the case of Embryo Transfer, a bull’s actual performance is meaningless in the calculations because you can’t account for the affect of the recipient dam. We have some bulls who are older than the average and some that are younger. The breed associations adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we generally (not always!) recommend you look at EPD’s over actual performance. In those cases where we feel strongly the EPDs don’t reflect a bulls potential, we will make note of it in the comments.
In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!). The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want a negative BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA, RAAA, & ASA as of September of the current year:
