BREEDING GUARANTEE: If a bull becomes a non-breeder within one year of this sale, J&N will provide you with a credit in a future sale equal to the bull’s purchase price less his salvage value. All bulls must be properly handled and cared for by the purchaser. Bulls should not be allowed to get too thin. Yearling bulls should not be mixed or used with older bulls in order to prevent the risk of injury. Yearling bulls should be semen tested before using them the first time. This guarantee does not apply to bulls that die, are killed or injured through no fault of J&N Ranch. If a problem arises, contact us before disposing of the bull.

All claims must be verified by a veterinarian.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: PAYMENT: Cash or check will be accepted. If you purchase over the phone or through a representative we ask that you mail a check on sale day. Payment is required before cattle are shipped from J&N Ranch. Each animal is sold with a J&N Ranch Certified Performance Pedigree.

REGISTRATION: The sire and the dam of all the bulls in this sale are registered in the American Black Hereford Association. Each of these bulls is eligible for registration. We will register and transfer any of your purchases in the ABHA into your name for a fee of $50 per head, due and payable at the time of settlement.

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST: J&N Ranch is retaining a 1/4 semen interest in all bulls selling in this offering. The purchaser of the bull will have possession of the bull and all salvage value rights. In the event of any semen sales from the bull, then J&N Ranch is retaining 1/2 interest in the gross revenue from all semen sales. J&N Ranch retains the semen interest if the bull is sold to subsequent purchasers. J&N Ranch also reserves the right to collect semen from the bull at the buyer’s convenience and our expense. If you desire any changes to the above retained semen interest, please contact us prior to the sale.

YARDAGE: We will keep your purchases at J&N Ranch until March 1st free of charge, thereafter we will charge $3 per head/per day. All purchases must be removed by May 15th.

HERD HEALTH: • At 60 days of age and post-weaning, calves were vaccinated with a 7-way clostridial with haemophilus. They were also poured with Ivomec.

• At Pre-weaning they got another round of clostridials plus pasturella, a modified live IBR,BVD,PI3,BRSV, Lepto 5, Vibro, and Hardjo-bovis, a Perfringens Type A toxid vaccine, and a Haemophilus shot. At Post-weaning they got a second round of IBR,BVD,PI3,BRSV, Lepto 5, Vibrio and Hardjo-bovis and Perfringens Type A vaccines plus an injectable wormer.

• All bulls have been examined and yearling scrotal measurements have been taken. All coming two year old bulls have been semen and trich tested.

• All cattle will sell with proper health papers for interstate shipment anywhere in the USA.

Twenty-fi e years ago, the American Black Hereford Association was incorporated. There have been two major events since then that have changed the course of the breed’s history.

The first was the Howell’s study commissioned by the ABHA in 2011. It established that Black Herefords have larger ribeyes, less trim fat and more marbling than traditional Herefords, which is a vestige of the Angus influence used to tu n the hair color black.

The second major development is on display in this Sale, superior calving ease. At J&N we developed a unique way of selecting for calving ease, which largely ignores actual birth weights. This method was developed in part from research done at the University of Leuven to reduce calving problems in Belgian Blue cattle, using vertical pelvic size together with body length and other measureables. The results have been dramatic as you can see from the EPD comparisons with other cattle breeds. In recent years, our customers report 95 to 98% unassisted births using our bulls.

All of our bulls are raised by their natural dams, on our ranch in a closed herd tested free of disease pathogens.

BLACK HEREFORDS GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS Every bull selling in the 2019 J&N Ranch sale has EPDs enhanced with DNA technology. We are investing in the latest technology available to provide you with the most accurate EPDs possible. This technology improves the accuracy of EPDs on a yearling bull, for example, as if he were an older bull with progeny proof!

These EPDs are based on a multi-breed analysis by IGS, the largest beef genetic evaluation system in the world combining performance records from 12 breed associations and J&N Ranch.

An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm, etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 17 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 40 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits.

PRODUCTION EPDS: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers.

Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease.

Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk.

Yearling Weight EPD): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age.

Average Daily Gain (ADG): The average daily gain of an animal for a fixed period of time.

Docility EPD (DOC): Docility EPDs predict the percentage of an animal’s offspring that are expected to score favorably (1 or 2) on a five point scale when compared to the offspring of another animal. They are expressed as a percentage with higher values being favorable.

MATERNAL EPDS Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births.

Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters.

They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters.

Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected.

Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters.

They account for average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters.

CARCASS EPDS Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPDs estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better.

For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower.)

Marbling EPD (MAR): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score.

Backfat EPD (FAT): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint.

Ribeye Area EPD (REA): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches.

SELECTION INDEXES Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where indexes come in. Through rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes.

All Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus firstcalf heifers and mature Angus cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index.

LOTS 85-90

The next 6 lots are the bi-product of an experimental cow herd we started 4 years ago. After the remarkable success of our new selection techniques for calving ease in Black Herefords, we wanted to try to produce a very high-yielding, calving ease beef animal using what we learned with Black Herefords.

Hereford-Angus cattle yield about 63-65% hot carcass weight compared to their live weight. Double muscled cattle yield 75-78% of their weight on the hoof. Heavy muscling and larger ribeye size are antagonistic traits compared to calving ease. However, we have been successful simultaneously increasing both traits in Black Herefords using these new measurables. With that same methodology, we may be able to produce a new cattle breed that is double muscled and able to consistently calve on their own.

For this experiment. we used Simmental and Angus genetics selected for calving ease using these new measurables. We started with 30 females and have now produced 2 heifers that meet our selection rubric. Next, we plan to introduce a double muscling gene. We know from the research at the University of Leuven that Belgian Blue cattle carcass yields run 75 to 78% but due to their heavy muscled body type most are unable to calve naturally. Calves are delivered by caesarian section. However, some Belgian Blue cows can calve on their own. The University has identified some reasons for this which we have employed to improve calving ease in Black Herefords and now in this herd.

Meanwhile, we have produced these wonderful yearling bulls built for calving ease out of registered Angus, SimAngus and Simmental cattle.
