Welcome to our 14th Annual Sale!

Hard to believe we’ve had a sale for 14 years, and have marketed bulls for 20! What a pleasure it has been getting to know so many great folks all over the country.

It feels like a soap opera saying, ‘when last we met, tough times were affecting both families…’

Well, it continued this year and sadly, each family lost their patriarch. In January, Charles Kniebel (Kevin and Chuck’s dad) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and thankfully did not suffer long. Then in April, Joe Downey (Barb’s dad) lost his battle with lung cancer after a valiant fight.

We miss them every day and are so grateful for the life lessons they taught us. We will strive to continue building and improving the families and ranches they loved.

So what have we learned the last few years? Life can get stressful; downright brutal. How you handle it is very dependent on attitude and preparedness. We found it’s a good lesson for ranch operations too. If something happened and you had to have your wonderful friends and neighbors come in and help out the drop of a hat, how much special care would your cows need?

The importance of cattle that work FOR you (and not the other way around) becomes very apparent.

We might soapbox a little here, so be prepared (or warned!). It is hard not to want to have the highest weaning weights, biggest yearling weights, highest indexes, etc, etc. You get the drift. But be careful; those ’prizes’ can come with expensive consequences. A cow that weans an 800 lb calf but pulls up open is not a win. Cows that milk themselves out of the herd because they are not suited to your environment cost a lot of money. And having to ‘help’ a calf learn to nurse because his momma’s udder sucks is

ridiculous. On the flip side, a dink calf is not desirable either - we realize that. Optimum is different than maximum.

What is the take home message? Reproductive efficiency is the foundation on which to build your herd. Correction—it’s more than the foundation; it’s the whole first story. Marbling and rib eye size won’t make or break your herd, but reproductive efficiency will. Remember, you are breeding Angus (Red and Black!) cattle, carcass traits are pretty inherent. Most of you are not finishing your cattle (and even if you are); focus on the cow traits. We practice what we preach in our own seedstock AND commercial herds.

Now I know you are all saying, “But you tout your carcass traits and USPB numbers all the time.”

Yes, we do, but that is the equivalent of shingle color. The house had to be built first. We will continue to make the functionality of our cows job #1 so that any bull you choose here will be a solid building block in your foundation. Count on us!

Switching gears, we loved the prices of cattle the last few years, as we’re sure you all did! But we knew they were not sustainable. That was both cake and icing, plus we got to eat it all too! Now we are headed back to reality and having cattle that live in the real world and work for you is crucial.

The Star System

On all our bulls, we put a box of stars at the bottom. This lets us take multiple EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they’re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother’s history all combine to make him one we wouldn’t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we’d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we’re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc into account.

That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam. Carcass & growth follow the same principles.

Actual Performance vs. EPDs

EPDs take into account performance & ancestry of many individuals across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual’s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs a better indicator of that animal’s genetic abilities than actual performance.

When we take weights, measure scrotals or scan for carcass traits, we have some bulls who are older than the average by quite a bit, and some that are younger. The breed associations take that data and adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd’s comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we recommend you look at EPD’s over actual performance. That is also why an older bull with an 1150 lb actual yearling weight might have a 1050 lb adjusted YW yet a higher YW EPD than a younger bull with a heavier ADJUSTED YW. Clear as mud?

55 KCC & DRI Bred Commercial Heifers

KCC and DRI are pleased to offer 55 bred heifers to calve in the Spring of 2017. They represent the top of our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kept heifers that were neither too big nor too small, were born in the 1st 1/2 of the season, had good temperaments, were good performers, and were structurally correct, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Heifers are bred to calving ease Black Angus (DRI) and Red Angus (KCC). The heifers have all their shots, have been dewormed, Bangs vaccinated & tested PI negative. Complete information on each heifer will be available on a supplement sheet online and at the sale. Videos of each lot will be online before the sale too.

Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

AGAIN THIS YEAR: THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON ALL HEIFERS. We have always had a policy of honesty in all dealings. We are coming off an extended drought that saw us downsize our herd significantly. We had good rains this past year and we’re in a position to cautiously expand our herds. Thus, we are setting a reasonable floor because they have great value to us.

These are heart of our herd heifers. There are A LOT of heifers out there again this fall. As belts tighten, known genetics become all the more valuable. We continue to offer our BEST, KNOWN, PROVEN GENETICS that keeps your foundation solid.

A Word About Cattle Feeding It’s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you’re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better.

You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership.

As seen below, money will be made on changing markets and grid premiums.

Therefore, retained ownership will happen more with grid proven cattle.

Understanding & Interpreting Data In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth.

However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!).

The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported.

This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want a negative BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year:

Red Angus ONLY  Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers’ desired response: pregnant heifers.  The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Megacalories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER!  HB & GM—Herd builder and grid master are expressed as differences in profitability per exposure. Example. Bull A has a 135 HB, bull B has a 100. In Memory Charles Wayne Kniebel passed gracefully to heaven on Thursday, January 28th, 2016, with family at his side. Charles was proud to be known as C.W. Kniebel. He was the 3rd generation of the Kniebels to till the soil and raise his family as a farmer/rancher. He had an extremely short bout with pancreatic/liver cancer.

Charles was born to Carl and Amanda (Lawrenz) Kniebel on December 21, 1930. He was the 3rd born with 3 sisters; Arlene, Twila, and Lois. He was the only heir namesake to carry on the family name. Charles attended 1st-8th grade at Baxter School riding his pony with his sister Twila to school. He enjoyed his high school years at White City High School graduating in 1948.

Charles was drafted into the Army in 1954 attending Basic Training in El Paso, Texas. After service, he resumed farming on the homestead west of White City with his father.

His passion for farming brought him interest in enjoying a farming class with other young farmers around the area. He was meticulous at sowing a crop with the straightest rows, but the biggest bit of pride was driving the Case International 4-Wheel drive tractor. As much as he loved tilling the soil, his favorite highlight of farming was feeding his cattle and watching them grow from birth to finish. The most unique aspect of Kniebel Farms was that they never sold calves, always finished cattle, for 5 generations!

Charles was united in marriage with Donna Jean Ruppel on December 7, 1958, in Herington at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children; Kim, Kevin, and Chuck. Donna preceded in death in 1990.

Charles was united in marriage to Mona Mae McDiffett on November 6, 1998, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shady Brook, of Woodbine. They enjoyed 17 years of marriage while he still farmed with his sons. They both cherished their bus trips and casino trips together making new friends.

Charles will be greatly missed by his widow Mona Mae, his daughter Kim (Alan) Bontrager; by his sons whom he worked with daily; Kevin (Mary Ann) Kniebel; Chuck (Kim) Kniebel. He leaves six grandchildren Amanda (Thad) Julian, Chelsey (Tanner) Stucky, Cassandra Kniebel, Clayton Kniebel, Spencer Bontrager, and Ali Bontrager. He was preceded in death by grandson Chase Kniebel. He also was blessed with 2 great grandsons, Connor Julian and Bentley Kniebel.

Joseph Leo Downey of Manhattan, Kan., formerly of Midland, Mich., died Thursday, April 14, 2016 after a 6 month battle with lung cancer.

Joe was born June 15, 1936 in Manhattan, Kan. to Charles Patrick Downey and Magdalena Lissolo Downey. He attended Sacred Heart Academy and Monsignor Luckey High School, graduating in 1954. He went on to Kansas State University, graduating in 1959 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Immediately afterwards, he reported to Ft. Sill, Okla., to serve his country as an artillery officer in the US Army.

While at Ft. Sill, he met Sherry Ann Alexander, who became his wife on Dec. 30, 1961. Upon completion of his military service, Joe went to work for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Mich. He spent his entire career with Dow, retiring in 1999 in a senior leadership position.

While still working for Dow, Joe returned to his ranching heritage, starting Downey Ranch, Inc. in his beloved Kansas Flint Hills. When he was finally able to return to Kansas full-time, he spent most days on the ranch, performing every function from management to tagging baby calves. It was cattle ranching that was his true vocation.

Joe & Sherry Downey were married for 55 happy years. Together, they raised four children; Laura Downey of Manhattan, KS, Barb Downey (Joe Carpenter) of Wamego, KS, Charles Downey (Nancy) of Riley, KS, and John Downey (Shannan Seely) of Whitehouse Station, NJ. In addition, they have six grandchildren; Patricia Bruen, Michael Skochdopole, Anna and Laura Carpenter, and Claire and Bronwyn Downey. Joe is survived by two sisters; Mary (Jim) Day and Catherine (Richard) Heise, both of Albuquerque, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Patrick Downey and Bernard Downey, and one sister, Jean Smithhisler. In addition, Joe left many friends. He touched countless people with his quiet acts of generosity. If you were in need, Joe Downey was there.
