JONES SMITH DIRECTOR DISTRICT 8

Jones Smith lives with his wife, Bridgette, in the Caney river bottoms of Collinsville, Oklahoma. Together, they own and operate Raising 5 Farm, a working raw-milk dairy dedicated to preserving the legacy and excellence of registered Brown Swiss cattle. Alongside raising and milking Brown Swiss, Jones also owns and operates a small trucking company, Raising 5 Services.

As a third-generation dairy farmer, Jones carries forward a family legacy that began with his parents, Larry and Jeannie Smith, founders of J&L Swiss. Their passion for Brown Swiss cattle sparked Jones’ own love for the breed from the time he was big enough to help in the barn.

Raising 5 Farm has built a reputation for quality, consistency, and cattle that are adaptable to the climate of the Southwest. The farm has been fortunate to have produced and shown numerous state and national champions, with animals consistently recognized in the prestigious Brown Swiss Bell Ringer and All-American contests. Their herd reflects decades of careful breeding that keeps longevity, profitability, and sustainability in the forefront.

Jones has long been active in leadership within the dairy community. He is currently Vice President of the Southwestern National Brown Swiss Show and Sale. He comanages the Heart of America annual sale. For more than a decade, he has also served on the Oklahoma–Arkansas Brown Swiss Board, helping guide regional breeders and promote the Brown Swiss breed across the Southwest.

Jones’ proudest role is family man. With five daughters and eleven grandchildren, he’s built a legacy that will hopefully allow his love of dairy cattle to continue to the next generation.

He sincerely hopes to bring greater awareness to the vitality, challenges, and shifting demands of milk production in the southern part of the US, especially as family dairies continue to fight for their place in a rapidly changing market. Jones firmly believes the hardiness, adaptability, and long-term value of the Brown Swiss breed, particularly in the tough and varied conditions of the Southwest, can help keep the dairy industry alive and well.

Connection

Faster than ever, “the times they are a changin’”

As the year closes, changes are coming. I informed the board, last December, that I would be retiring at the end of this year. In May of 2018, in my interview process for this position, one of the first questions I was asked came from then director Jeff True. He asked what my top priorities would be, I told him the integrity of the breed and keeping the front door open. There weren’t many more questions.

Rebekah Bovee will be retiring at the end of this year as well. She has been a full-time employee for 39 years and 10 months. She has worked under the leadership of 9 Executive Secretaries and 12 Presidencies. We say… “Thank you, Rebekah!”

The staff has and will continue to provide first-rate service to those that make up this association.

Much will be missed in the Brown Swiss world with the passing of Wayne Sliker. One in particular, was his support of this publication. Top Acres or Modern Associates promoted Brown Swiss with a few early exceptions, in every issue of the Bulletin, starting in the early 1960’s for 60 years. If advertising was worth it to Wayne, isn’t it worth something to you and to your breed of choice?

The Big Picture (From January 2023)

Worth another look.

The cost of registering cattle is a topic that comes up often. It goes without saying to get top value for purebred cattle, they need to have a registration paper. What does it really cost you to own registered cattle? Have you ever sat down to figure the real cost of being a registered Brown Swiss breeder?

I asked a Brown Swiss breeder that we all know to do some simple math on his costs. To be a Brown Swiss Advantage

(BSA) member milking 275 cows, the investment was $5,240. This makes up .32% of the total expenses on his dairy for 2022. That’s one-third (1/3) of 1%.

If you combine the cost of DHIR, Dairy Comp, and Genomic testing on 170 heifers along with BSA, the percentage of the total expenses on the dairy would be 1.14%. I also know that $12,350 worth of his cattle went through public consignment sales in 2022 and Registered heifers he sold privately for breeding purposes totaled another $45,650.

Each dairy will have different costs depending on

involvement in purebred activities. By using these basic numbers, you can see that in the big picture, the cost of registering your Brown Swiss is just “a high-component” drop in the bucket.

Consider this: with the high price of cull cows and x-bred calves, how about setting aside the salvage price of one or two animals to use for funding Registrations and promotions. Let’s call it…“ma’s egg money”.

“The extra value of Registered cattle can only be realized when they are, in fact, Registered.” We will help you with that process.

P RESIDENT’S MESSAGE

December is traditionally a time for reflection on the year that is coming to a close. As a Board, we will be meeting in Beloit at the beginning of the month to do just that — reviewing the work of the past year and making plans for the year ahead.

At our November meeting, we approved the minutes from October and reviewed our financials. We then discussed our ongoing search for a new staff member. We have had some difficulty finding the right fit for our needs, so the Board decided to adjust our approach and move the search in a different direction.

We also addressed a unique situation that occurred at the All-American Dairy Show involving the loss of professional photos taken at the event. The Board took action to allow those members whose photos were lost to still participate in our end-of-year contests.

In other business, our association vehicle, with more than 260,000 miles, is in need of repairs that exceed its value. The decision was made to sell the vehicle as-is and have employees use their own vehicles going forward, with mileage reimbursement.

Board Member Laurie Winkelman provided an update on the progress of the 2026 Brown Swiss Calendar, which she has taken on for the second year. In addition, Laurie will also be conducting our Type Classification Workshop with our classifiers. These are significant responsibilities, and we are grateful for the time and effort she gives to our organization. The Bulletin Committee will also be meeting soon and is expected to bring a recommendation to the Board at our December meeting.

As the year comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the passing of Wayne E. Sliker. Many fitting tributes have been written about one of the most influential individuals in our breed’s history. Wayne set a standard that we all strive to live up to. His voice and presence in the seller’s box over the years will long be remembered. He was a man of integrity, someone I respected, and most importantly, a friend. He will be greatly missed.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

As the 2025 show season comes to a close with the conclusion of the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), we find ourselves eagerly reflecting on the recent events and sending entries in for the All American and National Bell Ringer contests. The National Junior Bell Ringer contest recognizes outstanding Junior-owned or -leased animals exhibited at the junior’s canton show and/or any other designated qualifying junior shows. Please note the National Junior Bell Ringer entries are due December 15th.

The Southeast National Brown Swiss Show held in Louisville, Kentucky, was a remarkable showcase of excellence in the breed. On Thursday, Jenna Lenhart judged the Brown Swiss Junior show. As for the open show, over 150 head of Brown Swiss graced the green shavings to be sorted by Judge Jeff Brown. It was a delight to watch the youth display their hard work in the ring, and it was equally heartening to see both new and familiar faces participating. Congratulations to all!

The National Brown Swiss Association (NBSA) offers a variety of contests, awards, internships, and scholarships designed to encourage youth participation and excellence within the Brown Swiss breed. These are valuable opportunities for young individuals to engage with the breed and foster their agricultural interests. The Youth Achievement Award recognizes outstanding youth work in the Brown Swiss breed. The Junior Youth Achievement Award is a similar process. This award recognizes outstanding youth ages 8-15 for their work in the Brown Swiss breed. The National Ambassador is a personal favorite; their role is to be the spokesperson for the National Youth Brown Swiss Association and represent the breed at local, state, and national events, including World Dairy Expo, national convention, and other national shows. Another important accolade is the Cheese Yield Award. It is presented to the junior whose cow has the highest cheese yield for a 30-day period. The cow with the highest deviation overall is recognized

kaylenrmiller@gmail.com

as the National Youth Production Award winner. In addition, the Brown Swiss Association awards a $1000 scholarship or grant, annually to a youth pursuing a degree in agriculture or a dairy-related field. The award will be selected based on quality of application. These opportunities provided by the National Brown Swiss Association not only aim to acknowledge the efforts of youth but also encourage continued involvement in the agricultural community and the advancement of the Brown Swiss breed. It is hoped that many will take advantage of these available programs and awards. All of these contests and awards are due by March 31st. In order to learn more about the contest and application process, go to www.brownswissusa.com/youth/juniorcontests.

Looking back on the year, it has truly been a blessing to be able to attend so many national shows, watch so many beautiful cattle compete, and meet so many amazing Brown Swiss enthusiasts. While we switch from one show season to the next, I encourage all juniors to thank the ones supporting you, the people at ringside, those back at the pack, and the ones at home keeping everything together. The Brown Swiss breed is what brings us all together, but the people... the people are what make our organization what it is, and I, for one, am so thankful for that. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CREATING A FUTURE ON THE FARM THOMPSON USES WELDING TO JOIN FAMILY OPERATION

DARLINGTON, Wis. — Surrounded by a herd of cows built on the foundation of cows named Phoebe and Taps, Matthew Thompson grew up knowing that he wanted to dairy farm, continuing on the tradition of breeding Brown Swiss excellence established by his father.

“In high school, I had all sorts of ideas what I wanted to do, but the only one that stuck was farming,” Thompson said. “I guess I never really thought too seriously about doing anything else.”

Thompson and his father, Rick, milk 55 head of registered Brown Swiss and Jerseys on their Random Luck Farm near Darlington.

“Growing up on the farm, you have so many opportunities that non-farm kids just don’t get,” Thompson said. “There are so many great people you meet and make connections with, and experiences that you don’t even realize as a kid, are shaping your life.”

Many of those opportunities came to Thompson via his family’s involvement with breeding and promoting highquality Brown Swiss cows, Thompson said.

Like many young dairymen, Thompson needed to find a way to make joining his father as the second generation on the farm work, financially, finding ways to supplement his income.

“When I graduated from high school, I started working as a bus mechanic for our school district,” Thompson said. “That wasn’t something I’d ever thought of until just a couple of weeks before school got out.”

While working off-farm creates steady income, Thompson said some days are harder than others to adhere to the schedule of someone else.

“There’s a lot of days I’m not there exactly on time, but my manager is understanding about my schedule — he understands that things come up on the farm,” Thompson said. “And I’ve always been upfront with him, that I’d rather be farming — that’s my first choice.”

Knowing the bus garage is not a sustainable long-term match with dairy farming, Thompson continued to think of ways to supplement his income, while nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit embedded somewhere deep inside. He began making and selling show equipment.

“I had a shop teacher in high school that was pretty good with that stuff, and I learned a bit from him,” Thompson said. “Knowing what I know now, I really wish I’d paid more attention and took the classes more seriously.”

Armed with the Christmas gift of a welder from his father, Thompson began the process of developing his skills on his own, pleased to find a market for his wares, laying the

foundation for MT Enterprises.

“I’m not really sure how I got started doing it,” Thompson said. “It just seemed like something I could do after getting done with chores at night, to make a bit of money and not have to leave home.”

While his time working in the shop varies, Thompson said he puts at least some time in most evenings.

Thompson says his work are the tools that go into the art of presentation — pieces modern dairy cattle exhibitors can use to present their show strings in a professional manner. His repertoire includes making end panels, fan cages and stands, paper towel holders, board holders, j-hooks to hold signs and banner frames. He has also made bars to place on gates, used primarily to prevent beef cattle from swinging while they are being blown off.

“The neat part is, there is always something more you can do to make a display better,” Thompson said. “I’m working on perfecting my design for a holder for the automatic water bowls you use at the shows, so they can be easily dumped out every day. I’m not quite ready to start marketing them, but I’m getting close.”

At the request of neighbors and customers, Thompson has also forayed into making covered outdoor hay feeders and this fall has created feeders as well.

Thompson said he is blessed to have an Amish neighbor nearby that has helped him get established in his business.

“I’m able to order my metal through him,” Thompson said. “He buys in a quantity I couldn’t, so I’m able to get a better deal on a better-quality product. He also has tools that I couldn’t afford, that he lets me use to bend and shape metal. If it weren’t for him, the board holders and the paper towel holders would be much more difficult to make.”

While most of his work leans towards the practical and utilitarian, Thompson said he has occasionally made more decorative pieces.

“I used old stanchions to make flower holders and donated one to the fun auction

at the Wisconsin Brown Swiss meeting,” Thompson said. “I had made a few extras and took them along and sold all of them there.”

Thompson said that while he enjoys the creative aspect of his fledgling business, the drawback is his busiest time for orders coincides with the busiest time on the farm.

“September was pretty crazy,” Thompson said. “Between chopping corn and taking a string of seven cows to Madison, things were already pretty busy. Adding the orders I had to deliver at Madison — it was at least a dozen end panels, 60 board holders, a few sections of cage, and a few other things — made for some pretty late nights up in the shop.”

The motivation to always improve on what he does is ingrained in Thompson’s DNA. He recently invested in an aluminum welder to provide an avenue of growth for his business.

“I know there is more stuff I would be able to make,” Thompson said. “And there would be more of a market if I had aluminum to do end panels with.”

Most of Thompson’s skills have been selftaught or learned growing up on the farm.

“Being able to keep up with maintenance around the farm is a big thing,” Thompson said. “Most of the issues we have had mechanically in the last couple years, I have been able to fix.”

While it has come to be an endeavor he finds enjoyment in, Thompson said before he graduated, welding was not on his radar.

“I had zero vision of doing anything like this in high school,” Thompson said. “I spent most of my time just screwing around in shop class. If I would’ve known then, what I know now, I definitely would have used that time more wisely. That is the best advice I can give someone — always be thinking about the future, how you can use the experiences presented to you to create opportunities to allow you to achieve your own goals.”

Brown Swiss cows are presented in a show display crafted by Matthew Thompson, at the 20242025 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Thompson began crafting items, such as the fan cage, board holders and paper towel holders seen here, after he graduated from high school.
A hay feeder in progress stands in the shop Dec. 9 at Random Luck Farm near Darlington, Wisconsin. Matthew Thompson creates useful animal husbandry tools for the farm, in addition to show display equipment.
A trailer load of show equipment orders are loaded for delivery to customers in September at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Thompson said his busiest season is in the fall as people make preparations for their Expo displays.

Visiting the Past ...

Introduction

SHOW SEASON!! The 2025 show season has come to a close. Congratulations to all who have not just won a class, but to all the exhibitors. Show time is a time for everyone to visit, renew acquaintances with old friends , and to meet new friends. Whether it is a local, state, or national show , sharing time with fellow Brown Swiss breeders is unforgetable. National shows began in 1907 , with Folie 1552 being the first Grand Champion. One of the most unique exhibits was the Borden Exhibit at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. Below is a letter from Jane, describing how a cow views such an exhibition. Taken from the August , 1939 Bulletin.

A LETTER FROM JANE

Borden Exhibit World ’s Fair

New York

July 6, 1939

Mr. Fred Idtse Brown Swiss Associati on Beloit, Wis.

Dear Fred:

Not since the last time I won the Championship at the National, have I seen such crowds. They surge along in groups of fifty past my display window. My less attractive girl friends in the big “hotel” cast envious eyes on me. Actually, I would prefer to stay with the m. It has been extremely uncomfortable breathing in this hot room, but George has tried his best to make me comfortable while on my short stay here.

It has been a real satisfaction to see my younger girl friends take their places on the rotolactor in systematic order and nearly fill the jars above their heads. No less than sixteen out of thirty girls produced over fifty pounds of milk. They tell me that the long hay is like manila fiber and the citrus pulp is quite bitter until they get accustomed to it.

Our “Big Boss” Vere Culver, tells me that he was amazed at Dewdrop, my new Vermont friend. During the month of June , she produced 67.4 lbs. milk daily and 2.420 lbs. fat, after having had an attack of acytonemia. Some of the western show girls are doing a marvelous job at the pail. My friend from Lakefield, Minn. , topped the ladies in fat production. That good looking boy friend, Nevard of Bowerhome, has a very attractive daughter. She ranked fourth in fat production. We girls are quite thrilled to know th at we will be mated to this proven father.

It made me rather homesick after chatting a minute with Ardyce of Swiss Hills from Viroqua, Wisconsin. My sweet attractive grand -daughter, Procilla’s Foxy has been a great drawing card here. At any rate when it is all history, we girls will have given the m much food for thought.

Lovingly,

Brenda L. Blessing

Brenda Lou Blessing, 64, wife of Stanton Blessing of Blessing F arms, Fort Wayne, IN, passed away on November 17, 2025, after a long battle with deme ntia.

Brenda was born on December 26th, 1960, in Huntington, IN, to Ned and Judy (Riggers) Short. She spent her formative years in Huntington and wa s a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She graduated from Huntington North High Sc hool in 1980. She was married to Stanton M. Blessing on September 15, 1984, in Fort Wayne.

After graduating from high school, she earned her Cosmetol ogy degree from Ravenscroft Beauty College and was a hairdresser for 10 years. Brenda als o worked at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Restaurant in the retail shop. She was a member of St. John’s Lake Township Lutheran Church.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Brenda lived her life with a gentle heart, unwavering strength, and a deep love for her family. Those who knew her will forever remember her warm smile, her laugh, her kind spirit, and her giving heart. She had a way of making every person around her feel cherished. Her legacy of love, compassion, and quiet resilience will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

She is survived by her husband, Stanton; daughter, Addie (Austin) Shoppell; son, Caid (Marissa) Blessing; her father, Ned Short; five grandchildren, Braiden, Adayla, Camden, Gracie, and Milan; two sisters, Debra Selig and McKinley (Joe) Wheeler. She was preceded in death by her mother.
