Bixler Ranch 22nd Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

We want to say thank you to everyone who has impacted our family and our cattle operation. Since the beginning, there have been countless people who have touched our lives and for that we are grateful. Without the blessing of our family, friends, and customers none of this would be a reality. As cattle producers, we have a great responsibility to manage the land and tend to the livestock. As you know it is a task that can be both rewarding and overwhelming at times. The collection of a sale offering is a result of years of hard work and the fruits of our labor. We’ve tried to listen to our valued customers over the years. One of the overriding requests has been for more age advantage bulls.

This year all the bulls meet that request. We take great pride in the presentation of these bulls. The bulls are toned up, hard muscled, and ready to go to the pasture. They have been developed on wheat pasture, grass in the summer, and limit fed grain ration since December. We believe this bull development program will offer bulls with greater longevity and structural soundness for our customers.

The 2025 set of bulls includes some unique individuals as most sales do but this set of bulls is undoubtedly the deepest group in terms of quality that we have ever offered. In the breeds with larger numbers of bulls offered, there are many bulls that could be debated as the best and the gap between that group and the last bull in the breed is very small. It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 22nd Annual Bixler Ranch Bull Sale!

We introduced two Creed sons to you last year with one of them being one of the high sellers and the pair averaged over $8,000. We hope you got acquainted because the first six pages of the catalog are Creed sons this year. Lot 1 may be as arrogant and striking of an individual as you will find anywhere. From hoof to hock, this bull has tremendous strength of bone. You don’t take a pen and draw them any squarer hipped than this bull. He stands square and comfortably at the ground. He’s loose, he’s flexible, and he’s angular. He possesses the “it factor” when you think about producing the next generation of elite animals that have the intangibles to garner the highest dollar amounts. His frame size is just right to either be put on larger cows and have tremendous performance or be bred to moderate cows and maintain efficiency. In a deep set of Creed brothers, this dark red Lot 1 is an outlier.

Lot 2 and 3 of this year’s sale are almost peas in a pod. This bull's upper skeleton is elite within the breed. His rib shape is bold and robust. He is big and broad through his upper hip. Lot 2 is packed full of red meat. He is correct in his lines and he is blessed with the structure the Red Angus breed needs. His 8150 mother is striking and consistently churns out some of our top end Red Angus. Notice his Donor 4Z granddam and be sure to read the comments on Lot 6 about her. This bull could fit many different cattlemen and may be the stoutest of the first 3 Lots in the sale. This is the bull that you turn out in the pasture along the most traveled road for everyone to see the kind of bull you run with your best cows.

It’s a tough race this year for who is the best performance bull, but Lot 3 is going to have a say in the matter. If you have friends still buying bad looking bulls just because they say they have great growth numbers, as their friend, it’s probably your duty to let them know that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can’t ask for more performance than Lot 3 and I’m not sure he is capable of giving you a bad look. He has an easy keeping look to him for a growth bull, and you are going to have a hard time not keeping some females and bulls back out of him. This is a long sided, soft bellied, free moving bull that just does everything right. Isn’t that what we’re looking for?

There are moments when you think this could be the best bull in the sale, and for some cattlemen he might be. This bull is for the breeders that like big middled, easy keeping, masculine bulls. This is likely the last direct offspring of a full sister to 132 to sell and what a way for that lineage to go out after nearly a decade and a half of production. Performance, longevity, and low birth weight maternal genetics in a bull that you’re proud to look at every day.

Lot 5 is one of the more intriguing Creed sons in the set. He doesn’t pound the scales like some of his brothers, but this bull has some tremendous muscle shape. People like to use the phrase that they can land a cargo plane on an animal’s back and if that were possible, Lot 5 would be the Creed brother that you could do it on. For that kind of muscle, this bull is really neat headed and tight made through his front end making you think he might also calve easier than some as well. That added power comes from his PTO mother who raised our highest selling calving ease bull to date in last year’s sale. Lot 5 won’t be the first pick of the group, but neither was Tom Brady.

One of the few sons of Donor 4Z to ever sell and this may be the top Red Angus bull for growth. Donor 4Z is the mother of the $50,000 Hotty female that won the Tulsa State Fair for Bret Pembrook. At one point, she was the winningest Red Box daughter to have ever been exhibited. If you care about the genetics he carries that have tremendous show ring success, mark this bull. If you could not care less about the show ring and you simply want cattle that outperform your neighbor and deliver you a big check, put a mark beside Lot 6. Either way, this is where you plan on using your buyer’s number on sale day.

Lot 7’s mother who was purchased from our friends up the road, McMurphy Farms, has produced picture lot bulls in back to back sales. The best part about it is that they keep getting better! From his nose to his toes, this is one good looking dude. This bull hits you with more than enough muscle shape from any direction you view him. Now where it just gets plain fun is when a bull bred and built like this comes with a sleep all night kind of birthweight. In sports, Mr. Versatility is typically a player that adds value playing a variety of positions but is unlikely to be the most valuable player. With Lot 7, his versatility might make him the most valuable animal in the entire sale for some breeders.

The 808 cow produced one of the first heifers out of the 609 PTO son that we sold in our 2020 sale. That heifer was very elite and 5 years later we’re still breeding cows to 609. That elite heifer born in 2021 would be a full sister to the Lot 8 bull here. Whether you want to call it consistency or potency in genetics, it makes a difference and this bull has what we strive to produce. The 609 sons have headlined multiple sales for us and this bull is cut from the same mold that is ultra stout featured, long bodied, and the kind that makes you proud when you check that pasture. To take the comments from Lot 8 one step further, that heifer that we mentioned as a full sister to Lot 8 just happens to be the mother of Lot 9! She was bred to 5L Independence for her first calf and she produced what we consider to be one of the top calving ease Red Angus bulls we have offered. When you put this mating together on paper, you want the body from his 1808 mother, you can’t beat the performance or structure of 5L Independence, and you hope for a small headed, neat shouldered calf that comes out in the 60’s. You be the judge but I’ll be darned if it didn’t actually work how it was drawn out on paper. Whatever mark you put by the calving ease bulls that you like, go ahead and put one here.

The lightest birth weight bull in the sale but he’s definitely not inferior phenotypically. Lot 10 could have been pictured but when he is sandwiched between the bull in front and behind him it’s clear who drew the short straw. The maternal granddam of this bull is a sister to Donor 42B. When the snow is blowing and your heifers are calving, you’ll be glad to own this bull.

If you haven’t noticed, we are incredibly cautious when marketing calving ease bulls. We almost exclusively sell calving ease bulls that were calved by first calf heifers, except for unique cases. To take that one step further, that heifer calving unassisted doesn’t mean that bull calf can be a calving ease bull. We watch most heifers calve, document every calf at birth, analyze their build and how easy they were calved, and then still will not consider them sufficient without being satisfied with their vigor after birth. Unless we are confident with breeding our stoutest crossbred heifers to that bull, they won’t be considered calving ease.

Whether it is for calving ease or just top end, proven genetics, Lot 11 is about as royally bred as we can make them. This bull has 1 shot of 132 and 2 shots of Independence in him so there is no better calving ease combination we have seen. Outside of calving ease, Lot 11 goes back to the Taurus Donor 702 who has quickly made a name for herself with Purebred Red Angus and multiple red baldy crossbred matings. Behind 702 is Donor 42B and it’s nearly been a decade that she’s been the matriarch of our best bull matings. Not to mention that the mother to Lot 11 is a half sib to undoubtedly the greatest Red Angus female we have ever raised. She could have walked into almost any show ring in the country and won. We were so confident in her, we flushed her as a yearling and will have embryo matings from her before she even has her first calf. Should we even talk about what the bull looks like? If you don’t want to own Lot 11 by now, you’re simply not looking to own one of the best bulls.

We won’t say that Lot 12 stands up real tall, but he sure stands out! This is a moderate, easy keeping, belly dragging calving ease bull. We love the body on this bull and he is the epitome of efficiency. We cannot get enough easy keeping cows like this. If you don’t retain your heifers, you need to make sure you sell them for a premium because someone is going to get an incredible set of females out of this bull. We like that he is loose structured and his muscle is a bonus among the calving ease bulls. This bull should generate a highly profitable set of offspring out of first calf heifers.

We’ve sold some good Percentage Red Angus bulls, but wow, this one is special! The fun thing about him is that he has been special since he was a calf. When you have cattle that look like he has through each stage of their life, it gives you a high level of confidence in the consistency that they will breed through to their offspring. Lot 13 is stout, he’s sound, and he looks like you put a laser level down his top. He is big centered and his neck comes out extra high out of the top of his shoulder. If you had a group of people each pick the 5 best looking cows that we own, this bull’s mother would end up on almost all of their list. His Aristocrat great granddam was a highly successful female for the Donor Solution group. Lot 13 could be put on Red Angus cows, he would do a tremendous job for show cattle producers, and commercially this is a very valuable bull. Like Trace Adkins says in his iconic song, “this ain’t no thinkin’ thing”. Just buy him. You’ll love him.

raising quality seedstock and show cattle since 1897.

The Bixler Ranch was homesteaded in 1897 approximately 6 miles northwest of Waynoka. In 1925, George Bixler purchased his first registered Hereford cows driving them on horseback twenty miles from east of Dacoma. George's son, Ray, continued expanding the registered Hereford herd selling bulls throughout Northwest Oklahoma. In 1978, Stan, Ray's son, brought the first black cows into the breeding program starting the use of European breeds to stay in stride with the trends of the cattle industry. Clark, Stan's youngest son, is leaving his mark by continuing the decades of progressive breeding to keep pace with the demands of the cattle industry.

This is the first set of Paint It Red sons to sell through our sale, but saddle up because they’re deep. Paint It Red is probably a bull that was before his time for the Red Angus breed to allow his value to be fully utilized, but he has sure produced some top end cattle. Lot 14’s mother is a striking PTO daughter out of the great 120X Mulberry Donor. That means Lot 14 has a double shot of PTO in him but when you line the good traits up, that just makes them breed that much more consistently. You can’t help but appreciate the rugged masculinity this bull possesses while gliding on an impeccably flexible structure. He has that incredibly desirable dark red hair coat with points that drift toward black. This bull is easy to handle in a group, but if we were to change anything about him we’d like to see him a little more comfortable when he is sorted off by himself, which we commonly do. We do not have any concerns for any buyer that sorts their cattle in groups though.

A smoother made, fault free Paint It Red son. He comes with an even lighter birth weight due to his 5L Independence mother. His granddam is a high performance red blaze faced SimAngus female making this ⅝ Red Angus bull highly versatile to a multitude of breeders.

When we first started using Paint It Red, we flushed him to the top Red Angus cow we own, Donor 42B. Yes, if you study the pedigree you’ll see her on both sides. Call it what you want, but when the results look like this I think we can all agree it was the right choice. That’s before we even mention his full sister that we’ve already started flushing. Without even knowing he is royally bred, this bull’s length of body, power, and presence grab you in the pen. Being as long bodied as he is, this bull reaches out and grabs the dirt covering his track with a great big step. Lot 16 is a commercial cowman’s dream wrapped up in a pretty package.

SIRE EPD: CED BW WW YW 14 -1.2 57 92

If you didn’t know better, you would think Lot 18 and Lot 14 are twins. These bulls resemble each other in so many ways, but luckily Lot 18 offers a more relaxed temperament. Similar to Lot 14, we like this bull’s power, substance, structure, and presence. It only helps that his grandmother was a full sister to our well known calving ease sire, 132. We’d like to tell you that there was something scientific about putting 2 shots of PTO in the mating, but sometimes the bull cleaning up the cows that were AI’d just happens to have common genetics with some of the cows in the pasture. Regardless, we think it worked out pretty well.

Talk about bulls that could have been pictured. This bull is built similar to Lot 16 but slightly younger. His 929 mother put a bull in the sale last year as well so you know there is quality backing him. For commercial Red Angus breeders, the heterosis this bull offers while producing a calf crop that appears as Red Angus as any calf crop only puts more money in your pocket. If more money in your pocket isn’t something that you like, we have some pockets you can put that extra money in.

We collected the bull before the sale and thankfully so because he got his head stuck in a pipe fence and never fully recovered after being cut out. That spring we used some of the semen to breed heifers and ended up with some of the stoutest calves out of those first calf heifers. Lot 20 is the result of one of those matings. Lot 20’s mother is a stout, red baldy female out of a Maternal Made son. This bull is just the first chapter of hopefully a long story to be written for her. Dense! No matter what angle you view this bull from, he is dense. Lot 25 has a beautiful Bush’s Unbelievable Purebred Angus mother but other than being solid black I think he got all of his traits from Turning Point. This bull’s feet, back, and center body are massive. When you study this bull beside his counterparts, it’s incredible how much substance he carries but is as flexible in his structure as anything in the pen. An animal this big legged and powerfully constructed should not be able to be as attractive fronted as he is either. This is a rare specimen that we aren’t able to produce often. If you like to buy the best power bulls, stay in until the bidding is over because we may not be able to duplicate Lot 25 again.

The first Red Bird son we have sold and he is an embryo mating out of Turn Key’s full sister. Lot 26 offers immense shape through his rear quarter, is strong topped, and should make some really impressive baldy females. This particular mating offers some of our best performance from our Simmental genetics. We like the versatility that this bull offers a buyer from a commercial and maternal perspective. The replacement females could be pretty special out of a set of moderate Angus based cows, but it pays to sell heavy calves right now and this bull can do exactly that.

I don’t know how many years the 340 cow has put a bull in our sale, but it’s enough to make anyone feel confident in her consistency. We talk about her each time to where you could probably recite it, but she’s just the right kind of cow. We don’t put a lot of stock in a bull without a special mother, and this moderate, stout 340 cow is special. Lot 28 takes after his mother in his body shape with the extra performance from Red Bird. A highly coveted, red baldy SimAngus bull coming to you in Lot 29. 891 is an impressive 134 daughter that goes back to the Purebred Angus Outlook Donor 925 whose genetics show up in our matings each year. It’s easy to make a red baldy, but it’s hard to make a good one so lock in when you find one. Lot 29’s spring of rib and thickness through his lower quarter are advantages he carries among other red baldy counterparts. He would be a very good terminal sire, but it would be a shame not to retain some females out of this bull with so many generations of great maternal genetics.

Another Red Bird x Donor 723 mating. Donor 723 proved herself with her first calf being one of our favorite black calving ease bulls we sold in the 2022 sale. This mating to Red Bird produced some top end bulls in this sale as well as full sisters that we’re keeping for replacements. Her latest flush has resulted in our best black steers from the fall of 2024. None of that matters when a bull offers this kind of growth though. Keep the ticket when you sell his calf crop because they should be some of the heaviest out there.

734 is a red Outsider cow that is always fun to see what she raises each year. We have retained multiple daughters out of her because they each possess the presence and profile she delivers. Lot 30 is similar to Lot 29 but with a slight growth advantage. If you mark one of them, you might as well mark both of them and just turn them out together when you buy them.

Lot 31 and 32 are full sibs but you’d almost think they were twins. These are the top 2 performance Simmental bulls in the sale. This is another pair where it could make sense for a buyer to purchase both of these brothers and turn them out together. You’ll have the consistency in your calves as if only one bull bred the entire group but you’ll get twice as many cows covered. TAG

Lot 33 has been built this way since he was a calf and that is why he has always been one of the favorites. We can’t get enough cows built like him, but we’d sure like to make more. He is as deep bodied as anything in the sale. He carries his muscle down deep into his lower quarter, travels great, and is up-headed for a soggier built bull. There is a livestock judging phrase that says, “study long, study wrong” but you can study this bull as long as you want and I think the outcome will always be to buy him. There won’t be that many more direct sons of Turning Point sell so keep bidding on the good ones while they are available.

The 529 cow has mated well to Turning Point for multiple years. This bull has the substance and growth from Turning Point with an attractive outline like his mother. This is another bull that was on the shortlist to get pictured but those dreams faded when you look at the picture lot that is on the same page as him. Lot 35 will really help your calf crop press down the scales and look good while they’re doing it.

8 4 71.8 99.8

We mentioned that we had to use a few of these bulls to cover our own cows last summer and this was one of them. That pretty well tells you what we think about this bull. Not only was he big enough to cover cows as a yearling without having any grain as a calf, he was big bellied, great structured, and had the thickness that Turning Point breeds in his sons. The quality is apparent and this bull knows how to breed cows when you open the trailer gate. This seems like the successful kind that Sam Presti would draft.

Strong topped, neat headed, and stout built Turn Key son. His mother is a beautiful baldy cow that is the result of an embryo mating between a Steel Force son we used and a phenomenal Northern Improvement cow that originated from Gregory Farms. If you want to own one of the better SimAngus bulls, but you don’t need the largest bull in the sale this might be the best place to land. Someone should consider keeping females back out of Lot 36. They will be in high demand.

This bull really has a phenomenal build. Similar to Lot 36, some may think he’s moderate in size but we like to call that efficient. You could just look at this bull’s head and know he has more than ample muscle. This is the validation of why we use Turning Point and his son, Turn Key so heavily. If you haven’t used those genetics, it’s time to get started. If you don’t like to retain any females or bulls, tread lightly here because the calves out of this bull will be hard to part with.

Turn Key was one of the first calves born out of Turning Point.

Fire all the shots you want, but Lot 38 is pretty bulletproof. From his design, to his structural integrity, or his muscle composition he checks the boxes. He is not extreme in any particular area which might cause him to be overlooked initially but he balances as well as any bull. This bull hasn’t reached his peak maturity yet. Most people aren’t used to a bull getting even better after they take him home from the sale, but this bull just might do it.

This is a bull that is very picture worthy but it just didn't work out. The depth of body and massive center cavity that this bull possesses is exactly what we chase. If you put together a herd of cows with the traits this bull carries, there would be a line of trucks in your driveway every year to buy your calves. On top of that, he has one of the best dispositions of any animal in the sale. The world needs more big bodied cattle built like this bull and here is your chance to produce them.

Now there is no story we can tell you about this bull being overlooked unless we’re just talking about literally looking over the top of him. Not noticing this bull is about like overlooking an alligator in your elevator. What he doesn’t possess in height, he makes up for in width. We sell a few bodybuilders each year and Lot 42 can carry some weight. He is Hamp hog backed, walks around with his head up, fills his track on the move, and is clean jointed for a bull with that kind of power. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat and the scales aren’t biased on whether you’re wide or tall.

EPD: CED BW WW YW

Similarly to Lot 38, this bull may not grab you at first but he continues to grow on you as you really analyze his pieces. He excels some of the Turn Key brothers for performance. He excels in terms of true muscle shape and dimension. When you consider that he’s as good structurally as any showing you signs of longevity, this bull starts to rise up among the group depending on your priorities. His Icon mother was an awesome looking female on top of that. Keep an eye on this bull if you aren’t only looking for the flashiest bull in the sale.

This bull possesses some of the same muscle qualities as Lot 42 but does so in a less extreme package. Lot 43 is slightly younger and still has some maturity ahead of him so consider that when you compare him to some of the older, heavier bulls. His mother is another nice GCC New Game female. Bulls Structural Integrity

Our customers consistently tell us our bulls hold up better after the sale, through the summer breeding months, and last longer than previous bulls they have bought. While we believe this is partially a result of decades of extensive AI & ET programs breeding and culling for animals that work for cattlemen, that is only part of the equation. Our bulls are developed in large grass pastures and rarely in a smaller area than 160 acres until right before the sale.

Rather than being in a feedlot setting, these bulls consistently travel for feed and water while building muscle tone and athleticism; just like they would when they are turned out to go to work for you. We feel strongly that if these bulls are not over-conditioned, this provides value for you as the buyer to have a bull that is ready to work right away and has the structural integrity to last you many years to come.

The increase in numbers of calves born and weaned (4%) when crossbred is due to a greater livability of the crossbred calf as compared to straightbred calves.
