The Running W brand was first registered in 1869. Some have said that it represents one of the Ranch’s many diamondback rattlesnakes or the Santa Gertrudis Creek, while others are sure it signifies the sweeping horns of a Texas Longhorn. The Running W could also be interpreted as a section of a continuing wave pattern – signifying the uniting of the past with the present and suggesting continuity into the future.

Developed by the King Ranch, Santa Gertrudis

cattle continue to define maternal strength and performance in the toughest conditions

King Ranch continues to be home to industry-leading Santa Gertrudis genetics using time-honored techniques and the latest genetic and reproductive technologies. Whole herd reporting and high-density SNP panels from the largest, most comprehensive genetic evaluation in the breed results in highly accurate predictions for fertility, longevity, efficiency, and carcass quality. This historically outstanding maternal breed continues to make impressive improvements in feeder calf performance.

American

Cruz

These genetics are 40 years in the making. They combine the profitdriving maternal characteristics of Santa Gertrudis with the most modern Red Angus genetics. This mating produces females with proven longevity, consistently productive well beyond 10 years of age, and a feeder calf in high demand due to improved feed yard performance and an above average carcass value.

Robert Silguero, Manager of Seedstock Operations, and Virginia “Ginny” Silguero, Genetic Specialist and Bull Sales, lead the King Ranch seedstock program with a shared commitment to advancing performance, efficiency, and adaptability.

LOT DETAILS

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)

EPDs predict how an animal’s offspring will perform compared to others in the breed, using pedigree and performance data. They are the most reliable measure of genetic merit and help producers select traits that align with their operation’s goals and environment.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts calf size at birth and calving ease.

Weaning Weight (WW): Indicates growth to weaning (205-day adjusted).

Yearling Weight (YW): Measures growth to one year (365-day adjusted).

Milk (MK): Reflects the dam’s milk contribution to weaning weight.

Total Maternal (TM): Combines Milk and WW to show maternal ability.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): Indicator of bull fertility and heifer puberty.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Likelihood a heifer conceives as a yearling.

Breed Back (BB): Likelihood a two-year-old rebreeds after first calving.

Carcass Weight (CW): Predicts differences in hot carcass weight.

Ribeye Area (REA): Indicates muscling between the 12th–13th ribs.

Marbling (MB): Predicts intramuscular fat and carcass quality.

Backfat (FT): Measures fat thickness over the ribeye.

Index Definitions

Balanced Index

For herds retaining replacements and marketing feeders on carcass value; includes all traits except Carcass Weight and Backfat.

Cow/Calf Index

For herds selling calves at weaning; emphasizes fertility, growth, and maternal traits.

Terminal Index

For herds marketing on carcass merit; focuses on growth and carcass quality.

Breed Levels Explained

Santa Gertrudis

Cattle designated as Purebred Santa Gertrudis are qualified to register as such with Santa Gertrudis Breeders International.

American Cruz

Cattle designated as American Cruz are a blend of Santa Gertrudis (SG) and Red Angus (AR) genetics.

Docility Scoring

Each bull is evaluated individually on horseback to assess his response to pressure and interaction in a working ranch environment. This method provides a consistent and realistic measure of temperament and ease of management. Because these cattle are not accustomed to being handled on foot, evaluations are conducted in conditions that reflect how they are typically managed. While disposition varies among individuals, these scores offer useful insight for selecting bulls suited to your operation and handling environment.

Scoring Scale

1 — Calm: Bull remains relaxed and moves quietly during evaluation.

2 — Alert: Bull shows mild awareness or increased pace when evaluated.

3 — Reactive: Bull shows noticeable unease or defensiveness under pressure.

Testimonials

“We’ve always liked the feedlot performance on these cattle. King Ranch has taken a sound base and made it better. My American Cruz females have proven to be fertile and efficient grazers. My assessment of these cattle is they are heat tolerant, healthy, highly efficient cattle.”

John Josserand, President, AZTX Cattle Co., Hereford, TX

“We appreciate the high breed back percentage, correct udders, and weather tolerance of these cattle. They have done well in our area and we are slowly replacing our existing genetics with the American Cruz. Working with King Ranch has been an honor.”

The King Ranch team provided not only SGBI based EPDs but extensive additional performance data, from King Ranch’s own genomic-enhanced evaluations, and indices that allowed us to make highly targeted selections for our breeding program.

King Ranch’s representatives demonstrated deep expertise in matching bull profiles to specific operational goals, such as optimizing maternal and carcass traits. The extensive data provided and their willingness to discuss, made the process very efficient and provided high confidence in our selection.
