President Letter The recently completed JNHE was truly a great event! We have been fortunate to host the JNHE three times in the last 10 years, and I believe the 5th time since the 1980's. There were many compliments of Wisconsin hospitality and remarks about how people like to come here! Hats off to all the volunteers that made this possible as well as to the advisors, especially BJ and Kim Jones. The depth of outstanding cattle in each class was amazing. One of the judges, Tyler Cates, who is not By: Steve Merry a Hereford breeder, commented after one of the WHA President divisions, that it was likely the strongest division of any breed Jr. National show! Congratulations to the Juniors and their families. You made Wisconsin very proud! Beyond the cattle show, it was a very fun event. Many participated in the contests with Wisconsin having 14 contest winners! Congratulations to all of them which are listed elsewhere in the Review! A lot of camaraderie was evident among the adults and it was great to see kids playing basketball, throwing baseballs and having fun! Thank you to the Weichert and Starck families for representing the WHA at Farm Technology Days. The WHA is blessed with having so many members volunteer. We will not have a tour this fall since we hosted the JNHE, but I encourage you to consider hosting a stop at your farm on a future WHA tour. We will be returning to the Dutch Valley Sale Barn near Platteville in March 2027 for our Spring Sale, as we have a 5-year contract with that facility. Please submit your sale nominations and send in DNA early. This helps prevent uncertainty later on and greatly improves the timeliness of the sale process. Upcoming events include the State Fair, World Beef Expo, and several sales. I hope to see you at these events!

All WHA Members are welcome to attend the Annual Meeting. Please join the WHA for a delicious luncheon and social time, followed by the Annual Meeting. If your schedule for the day doesn’t permit you to join for the meal, please feel free to still attend the meeting at approximately 12:30 pm. At the Annual Meeting, the year 2026 will be reviewed through WHA organization and committee reports. Information will be presented for upcoming WHA events in 2027. The WHA’s Annual meeting day will also include an educational program in the morning, followed by networking & social time, prior to the Annual Meeting. In addition, the WHA will host a Bake Sale, Silent Auction, and Food Pantry Collection, on the Annual Meeting day. It will be an educational and fun day of networking with fellow Hereford Enthusiasts, while supporting the WHA and the local community! The details of the WHA Annual Meeting day activities, including meeting notice, luncheon, RSVP, meeting agenda, Board of Directors election ballots, and minutes of the previous year’s Annual Meeting have traditionally been printed and postal mailed to the WHA Membership in the WHA Annual Mailing packet prior to the Annual meeting. Due to rising postage and printing costs, the 2027 WHA Annual Meeting Announcement is printed in The Wisconsin Review, and serves as notification of the meeting to the WHA Membership. The 2027 Annual Mailing will be available electronically on the WHA Website page in December 2026, but will not be postal mailed, to save on printing and postage costs. WHA Members will be notified by email when the Annual Mailing information is available on the WHA Website. Please watch your email and visit the WHA Website for the 2027 Annual Mailing materials. 2027 Board of Directors Election Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Voting for 2027 Board of Directors Elections will occur via electronic method, as prepared by the WHA. Additional details regarding Director candidates, ballots, and electronic voting will be emailed to the WHA membership in December 2026, and information will be available on the WHA website. Members may request a paper ballot for Director Election voting if they wish. My name is Tessa Smith and I am the 2026 Wisconsin Hereford Queen! I have been fortunate to represent the Wisconsin Herefords this whole summer, and I look forward to continuing to do so at the Wisconsin State Fair in August. The highlight of my experience so far was helping in the show ring at the Hereford Junior Nationals in Madison! I have been able to meet many girls from Tessa Smith other states, network, and see the behind 2026 WHA Queen the scenes on how the show itself is run. The “Hereford family” is no joke- everyone works together like a well oiled machine! It was so fun to share those proud moments with exhibitors, and I saw a lot of familiar WHA faces! I look forward to continuing my journey to the State Fair!

Wisconsin was well represented at the 2026 Junior National Hereford Expo, "The Hereford Masters at Madison," held July 4–10 in Madison, Wisconsin. A total of 60 exhibitors from 40 families exhibited 147 head of Hereford cattle, making it an outstanding week for our state and our junior members. As the host state, Wisconsin was incredibly proud to welcome Hereford families from across the country. We are especially grateful to the countless volunteers who dedicated their time to layovers, move-in, ring management, the Golf Fun Zone, and many other behind-the-scenes responsibilities that made the event a success. Throughout the week, exhibitors from around the country shared that Madison was one of their favorite Junior National locations, and that recognition belongs to the tremendous support and hospitality shown by Wisconsin breeders, exhibitors, and volunteers. One of the highlights of the week was the Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt, where 20 teams of 10 juniors spent the first three days of the event completing challenges, searching for hidden items, and meeting fellow exhibitors from across the country. Awards were presented to the top three teams, and the activity received tremendous feedback from participants as one of the most enjoyable events of the week. A sincere thank you to Sunglo Feeds for sponsoring the awards and helping make this experience possible. Wisconsin also hosted an Ice Cream Social, serving more than 2,000 ice cream bars to exhibitors and their families. This tradition continues to be a favorite event and would not be possible without the ongoing success of the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association Donation Heifer Program. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Bergman family of Bergman Farms, sponsors of this year's donation female, for their generous support. Another memorable gathering was the joint Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin Pizza Social, generously hosted by Paul Bramschreiber and Bramschreiber Hereford Farms. The event was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, relax, and enjoy time together, and it was greatly appreciated by everyone who attended. Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the breeders, sponsors, and industry partners who continue to support the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association. Your generosity and commitment provide incredible opportunities for our youth and play an essential role in the continued success of our association and its members. WJHA News A Cow's Secret Superpower_ The 4 Chambered Stomach

You may have heard of Superman’s speed and strength, Wonder Woman’s reflexes, and Spiderman’s webs, but did you know cattle have superpowers too? Maybe the most impressive is their Super Stomach! I’m Olivia, the Hereford Heroine from Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, here to tell you all about it! Since cattle eat so much grass and other roughage, having just one part of their stomach isn’t enough. Cattle have four parts of their stomach that work together to break down feed, get the most nutrients possible, and pass waste easily. Each part has its own important job to help cattle digest their food. The rumen is the first stop for feed that cattle eat. The rumen helps break down plant products such as grass. Because cattle consume large amounts of plant products each day, the rumen is the largest part of the stomach. Due to its large size, the rumen can hold up to 25 gallons of material. Tiny microbes in the rumen help to turn the food into fatty acids, which are the main source of energy for cattle. The microbes also make vitamin b, vitamin K, and amino acids. The rumen is so big it can also store extra food for later. After food leaves the rumen it goes into the second part of the cow’s stomach, the reticulum. The reticulum is near the heart and is made of complex tissue shaped like a hexagon which makes it look like a honeycomb. Food mixes together with the cow’s saliva in the reticulum and produces cud. If cattle accidentally eat metal, it will end up in the reticulum. The third part of the stomach is the omasum. The omasum can only hold about 2 gallons of materials. It is shaped like a globe and has leaves of tissue similar to pages in a book. The omasum absorbs water for the cow. It also acts as a filter that only lets small amounts of food and some liquids move into the 4th part of the stomach. The last part of a cow’s stomach is the abomasum. The abomasum is similar to a human stomach and holds about 7 gallons. It uses enzymes to break down any remaining feed material before it goes to the small intestine. Some people say the abomasum is the true stomach because it does the most work while the other parts break down the food and get it ready to be digested. Cattle might not look like typical superheroes, but their super stomach can outpower any Avenger and they don’t need a fancy suit to do it! WHA News You’re Invited……To serve on the WHA Board and Committees The Wisconsin Hereford Association is seeking interested members to serve on the WHA Board of Directors and on Committees within the WHA. Any member can volunteer; the only requirements are an enthusiasm for Hereford Cattle and an enjoyment of networking with other Hereford Breeders in Wisconsin! The WHA Board of Directors is composed of 12 members of the WHA. The Board of Directors plans, and oversees the yearly activities of the WHA. Through activities of the WHA, the Board’s goal is to continually improve Wisconsin Hereford cattle quality, and create a support network for Wisconsin Hereford Breeders that will last many years into the future!

Structure of the WHA Board of Directors is detailed in the Bylaws of the organization, which are posted on the WHA Website (Officers & Directors Page). Each year, four Director positions are up for election (onethird of the Board). Directors may serve two, 3-year consecutive terms if they wish, running for re-election at the conclusion of the first 3-year term. If a Director serves two 3-year consecutive terms, after waiting for one calendar year, they may become a candidate for Director again and re-join the WHA Board if elected. Or, a Director may serve one, 3-year term and “retire,” not running for re-election.

The WHA Board of Directors meets 5 times yearly, in person and/or on Zoom to discuss current topics within the WHA. Meeting dates are in January (the evening prior to the Annual Meeting), March, June, September, and December. Minutes of the Board of Directors’ meetings are available on the WHA Website. Please visit the "Publications" page and choose "WHA Minutes" if you would like details of past meetings.

At this time, there are four WHA Director positions which will be elected in January 2027, as the Board will begin a new year for the WHA at the Annual Meeting. The WHA Board of Directors is seeking interested candidates to serve on the Board to fill these positions that are up for election in January 2027. Election materials will be provided to the WHA Membership in December 2026. If you are interested in serving as a Director on the WHA Board, please contact any Board of Directors member by October 31, 2026. Contact information for the Board of Directors is printed in The Wisconsin Review magazine, on the President’s Letter page. WHA Committee Opportunities Committees of the WHA are small groups of members that focus on carrying out specific activities within the organization. The Committee works with the budget for each activity (if applicable) and all of the details needed to carry out the activity. Both WHA Members, and Board Members may serve on a committee. A person does not have to be a Board member to serve on a committee. Any WHA members are welcome to serve on a committee if it is of interest to you. You just need enthusiasm for Hereford Cattle, the WHA, and the specific activities of the Committee! Communication and activity happens throughout the year within the Committee to accomplish the work of the Committee itself. At each WHA Board meeting, the Committee Chair provides a report of the activities of the Committee. If you are interested in helping with a WHA Committee, please contact the Board Member Committee Chair.

1. Consignors must be a member of the WHA or WJHA. Consignors must be a current member at the time of nomination. Consignors must also have paid membership for the following year at time of entries. In the case of partnership cattle, at least one partner must be a member of the WHA or WJHA. All cattle must be registered with the AHA. 2. Nomination forms and copies of registration papers need to be postmarked no later than October 4th, 2026. All nominations must be accompanied by a $100 nonrefundable screening fee per consignor. Screening fees will be credited to the breeders that sell in the sale on a per breeder basis. Screening fees from breeders not selected will be subtracted from overall sale expenses. Consignors will be notified of screening date and time. Sale management has the right to close entries at 50 lots, with a maximum of 20 bulls. 3. Once the selections have been made, a $200 entry fee per animal, footnotes, and photos must be submitted to the WHA sale manager with a postmark no later than December 6th, 2026. Sale manager has the right to extend the due date depending on timing of screening. Entry fee will be credited on account upon completion of sale. Entry fee is non-refundable on all no-show sale animals once animal is cataloged. Consignments, entry fees, and all paperwork not received by the due date will not be catalogued or eligible to sell. 4. Photos are due no later than December 20, 2026. There is no charge for photos sent electronically. There is a $5 fee for photos submitted in hard copy. Good pictures are needed. No picture is better than a poor picture. No EPD graphs will be accepted as photos. The Sale Manager or Committee has the discretion to use or not use photos submitted. Planning ahead helps ensure the best picture quality and catalog image representation of the animal. It is recommended utilizing a professional photographer for catalog photos. Also, taking pictures in October or November may provide the most ideal conditions for image quality and clarity. Contact the Sale Manager for photographers available. 5. Semen and Embryos: Entry fee $50 per package. Entry deadline will be the same as live animals. Sale expenses will not include vet fees or facility rental fees. 6. Substitutions will be allowed. The substitutions must be screened and declared at the time of screening. Substitutions are only allowed for medical issues or genetic issues. (ie bull didn’t pass semen test, bred heifer is open or injury or DNA testing identifies animal as a carrier of genetic defect). Consignor must provide veterinarian letter stating nature of injury and/or problem to the original entry and/or copies of genetic testing result indicting genetic defect. Consignor will be responsible for copies of supplement information at the time of the sale. Substitutions will be as a first come first serve basis. The sale manager has the discretion to accept or not accept substitutions. 7. Corrections to the sale catalog: Consignor will be responsible for copies of supplement pedigrees at the time of the sale. For minor corrections a supplement sheet will be available at the time of the sale and the consignor is responsible for notifying the sale committee of any corrections. 8. Animals are to be in place by 2PM on Friday, March 19th, 2027. 9. BULLS – must be born between January 1, 2024 and March 31, 2026. The sale committee will hold as close as possible to 20 head to maintain a strong bull market. A consignor may consign two bulls. For each additional bull, a minimum of one female lot (live or genetic) must be consigned and sold through the sale. All bulls must have a nose lead or nose ring. 10. HEIFERS – Members are encouraged to have females bred to calve by 30 months of age. Bred heifers must be pregnancy checked by a veterinarian and verified on the health paper.

11. COWS – Must be 5 years old or younger. They must have a natural calf at side or a guaranteed pregnancy. Calf may be sold separately at the discretion of the consigner and the sale management. The cow/calf will be sold as one lot. 12. All animals must have a legible tattoo as stated on the registration papers to sell. 13. All consignments need to be identified as polled, horned, or scurred in the footnotes. 14. EPDs will be included in the sale catalog as calculated from the AHA as of the catalog print date. Only animals with EPD’s will sell. 15. HEALTH – all cattle are required to have separate, official intERstate health papers at sale time. DO NOT PLACE MULTIPLE ANIMALS ON ONE FORM. ALL cattle must have a RFID or metal tag per state regulations. Suggested tests are Bangs, Anaplasmosis, Tuberculosis, and BVD – Pl. If your animal(s) sell into a state requiring listed tests, breeders will take the subject animal to its origin, have it tested, and once cleared, arrange shipping to the buyer. Females are encouraged to be calfhood vaccinated but no longer required. Breeders on a whole herd Johnes classification program will disclose their Johnes status. 16. Sale guarantees will follow AHA recommendations. The WHA makes no warranties or representations of the animals. All guarantees are between the buyer and the seller. WHA acts ONLY as the agent in the sale of the animal. 17. DNA TESTING – All bulls need to be DNA tested with genomic EPD’s and free of all defects. Results cannot be pending. All females that have HYP, DLP, IEP, MSUDP, MDP or DBP on their pedigree must be DNA tested for the genetic abnormality. No carriers or pending will be allowed to sell. Please send DNA samples as soon as possible as it takes 4-6 weeks for results. 18. SEMEN TEST – All bulls must pass a semen and breeding exam by a certified veterinarian or a professional semen collection service. Testing must meet these minimum standards: Scrotal circumference – less than 15 mo. 30 CM, 15 to 18 mo. 31 CM, 18 to 21 mo. 32 CM, 21 to 24 mo. 33 CM and 24 mo. and over 34 CM. Motility -- 30% or fair Sperm morphology -- 70% normal cells Testing must be done within 30 days of the sale. An official form must accompany all bulls. All bulls need to provide verification of being DNA tested with the AHA. All non-virgin bulls and all bulls 24 months of age or older at the time of the sale must have a negative PCR Trichomoniasis test within 30 days prior to the sale. Virgin Bulls – Bull(s) under the age of 24 months of age and is “virgin” in that they were not sexually exposed to any female. A statement must be included on the health certificate stating “The bull has not been sexually exposed to breeding-aged females” 19. SALE EXPENSES – All sale expenses will be divided equally by each sale lot. Any lot that enters and fails to show will forfeit their entry fee. All lots that go through the sale ring are required to pay their share of sale expenses. The WHA will receive 2.5% of the gross sale for each lot that goes through the sale, based on the final bid for that lot. 20. All paperwork needs to be completed by the consigner by sale day. All required information on cow-calf pairs and bred heifers regarding AI, service sire, dates, and calf information must be completed on the back of the pedigree and turned in to the sale manager prior to the sale. Pregnant females carrying the service of an AI sire do not need an AI certificate for the unborn calf. This will be the responsibility of the buyer.

WHA News 2027 Volunteers Needed Do you enjoy talking about Wisconsin Herefords and visiting with other cattle breeders? Then you’re the volunteer WHA is looking for! The WHA is seeking volunteers for 2027 activities. Knowing ahead of time how many volunteers are interested in helping out with industry and WHA events helps the WHA Board of Directors plan yearly activities for the WHA. 2027 WPS Farm Show: March 30 – April 1, at the EAA Grounds at Oshkosh, WI. This is an indoor trade show highlighting the most recent innovations in agricultural equipment, technology, and services, and has approximately 400 exhibitors from the United States and Canada each year. The WHA has a booth at the WPS Farm show each year, and will need volunteers to staff the booth and talk to visitors about Wisconsin Herefords and the WHA!

2027 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days: Dates & Location to be announced. This is an outdoor event that includes live animal displays, events, and demonstrations, and showcases the latest in all aspects of Wisconsin Agriculture: beef, dairy, crops, horses, equipment, services, and more! 2027 WHA Summer Tour: Each year the WHA hosts a summer tour of several members’ farms. The tour is open to WHA Members and the public. The goal of the tour is to help promote Wisconsin Herefords and the WHA, and provide educational and networking opportunities for Hereford breeders. Host farms have Hereford cattle available for viewing, and typically offer a short educational program provided by a vendor of products/services to the farm. Past topics include reproductive management, feeding, farm management, conservation, etc. Host farms also provide refreshments or a meal (often co-sponsored with a vendor of products / services for the farm) depending on the time of day, and each stop includes time for networking also. Hosting the tour is a great way to showcase your cattle and promote your farm’s breeding and management program. Elizabeth Wiechert, Maple Crest Farm, at the 2026 WI Farm Technology Days

2026 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days The 2026 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days was held July 14-16, at Redetzke’s No Joke Dairy, Stratford, WI. Redetzke’s No Joke Dairy is a fifth-generation farm, in the family since 1911, and is owned by Matt and Brittany Redetzke and Sam Redetzke. Currently, four generations of the Redetzke family are involved in the farm’s daily operations. The Redetzke’s have 400 head of cattle and plan to expand in the future with a new robotic milking facility. The WHA had a booth display in the Beef Tent at 2026 WI Farm Technology Days. Thank you to Jim and Diana Wiechert, Maple Crest Farm, for setting up and taking down the WHA Booth, and staffing the booth on Thursday. Thank you to Janet and Elizabeth Wiechert for staffing the booth on Tuesday, and to Rick and Jenny Starck, Starck Century Farm, for staffing the booth on Wednesday. Even though the weather was very warm, visitor traffic to the booth was steady, which provides good publicity for the WHA and Wisconsin Herefords! The Wiechert Family brought Candace, Elizabeth Wiechert’s show heifer, for display in the WHA booth. Having a live animal in the booth provides a great opportunity to show an example of the breed and start conversations about Wisconsin Herefords. Thank you to Elizabeth and the Wiechert Family taking the time to prepare and bring Candace to the show! Candace helped draw visitors to the booth and set a great example of Wisconsin Herefords. Many thanks to the Starcks’ and the Wiecherts’ for representing the WHA during the show, and for talking with visitors about the Hereford Cattle breed. Visitors to the booth received WHA promotional materials, including The Wisconsin Review magazine, brochures, pens, and magnets. Literature about the Hereford cattle breed, from AHA, was also available. The WHA Member Slide Show, created by Janet Wiechert, was also on display, showing pictures of WHA member families and farms. Thanks to everyone that stopped by the WHA booth and visited about Herefords!
