The President’s Pen Friends and fellow Angus breeders, The old saying “If you don’t like the weather in Kansas, just wait 30 minutes and it will change” sure rings true, especially the last several months! We went from massive drought last summer to what seems to be a winter that just won’t give up. I have talked to a lot of people and the weather sure hasn’t made spring calving very easy, but it is so rewarding keeping the next generation of herd bulls, replacement females or feeder calves alive. On a lighter note, I haven’t seen a farm truck drive by our farm that isn’t covered in mud from front to back or top to bottom. The spring breeding season will be right around the corner. I would like to encourage everyone to talk and ask questions about potential mating decisions. Talk to your neighbors and fellow breeders within the state. We have so many breeders that do a fantastic job within their programs. To add to that, no two operations are the same, and I feel that we can all gain some perspective and knowledge with valuable conversations. With that being said, not all sire groups work the same in every operation or management practice. Sometimes we may learn what not to do more than we learn what to do. Along with talking to fellow breeders I like to attend sales and do my own research and development with my own eyes. I encourage everyone to get out within the state and look around and you may potentially run into me! I’m planning on getting out as much as I can this spring as my schedule allows. As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to give me a call 913-680-4414. Humbly, Brandon New 2019 President 913-680-4414

Notes & News from Anne Oh Baby Oh baby– calf, this sure has been a rough welcome to ranch for you. Cold, snow, rain, wind and mud have made your first few hours of life unwelcoming, but you soon found out that your humans did everything in their power to make you warm and dry as you took your first wobbly steps to your first drink of milk from your capable Angus mother. As I write this most of the state has had a cold, icy drizzle throughout the day and we are preparing for yet another snow in much of Kansas. Extra hay and bedding is out, cows close to calving are being watched closely ,calves are tucked in and… oh yes many of you are just hours or days away from your production sale. It’s been quite a winter, but all of the rain and snow lends a great promise of plentiful green grass as the temperatures begin to warm and we welcome spring. "Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love." --Sitting Bull Anne Lampe, Kansas Angus Association Manager Kansas Angus News Editor , Kanasangus@wbsnet.org,

Research PAP EPD Launched by Angus Genetics Inc. The genetic tool will allow producers to more easily identify cattle less susceptible to high altitude disease. A research expected progeny difference (EPD) for pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) was launched by Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) on Feb. 1. This research EPD stems from collaborative efforts between Colorado State University (CSU), the American Angus Association ® and AGI, combining datasets collected at CSU, the Association and by Dr. Tim Holt. This latest EPD from AGI is a first of its kind for any breed association and will help producers identify cattle less susceptible to high altitude disease (HAD).

American Angus Launches National Advertising Campaign New print and digital campaign promotes the value of registered Angus genetics. The American Angus Association ® announces the launch of a new national advertising campaign promoting the value of registered Angus genetics to the backbone of the beef industry – commercial cattle producers. The new campaign showcases the registered Angus bull, cow and calf, with each to be promoted within its respective season.

Henry C. Gardiner Scholarships Awarded to K-State Animal Science & Industry Undergraduates Since 2012, the Henry C. Gardiner scholarship application process creates an environment for qualified students to compete for elite undergraduate scholarships. Academic standing, community service, work ethic and future goals are taken into consideration. A panel of K-State faculty and industry leaders review the applications. Finalists are selected and compete in a rigorous interview process. The students are the best and brightest agriculture undergraduates enrolled at K-State and express plans to continue careers in agriculture. Henry C. Gardiner Scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year have been awarded to Shane Newton, --Waverly, Kansas; Adrian Austin, Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Keayla Harr, Jeromesville, Ohio; and Cooper Imthurn, Maple Hill, Kansas. Shane Newton has complimented academics with real world experience in registered seedstock, feedyard and research. Adrian Austin grew up on her family’s farm in southern Illinois. Her goals include using her K-State experience to become a professional in ag communications. Keayla Harr plans to pursue a graduate degree in meat science, possibly conducting research and development. Cooper Imthurn represents the third generation of beef producers in Kansas. Cooper plans to return to the family’s commercial cow-calf and backgrounding operation. Mark Gardiner offered these comments, “Each year the selection committee reviews the applicants and interviews the finalists. We are invigorated by their curiosity, ambition and intellect. We hope the scholarships help to ease the financial burden of higher education but, more importantly, are confident these students have the ability to make a positive influence in agriculture.” Students classified as a rising-junior, junior or senior, either enrolled in or planning to enroll at Kansas State University with a major in Animal Science & Industry or closely related field may apply. Henry C. Gardiner Scholarships are awarded annually to K-State students meeting rigorous criteria and exhibiting a passion to improve the beef industry. The Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship is possible through the generous contributions of Gardiner customers, friends and family continuing the legacy of Henry Gardiner. To date, 26 undergraduate students have received $120,000 in scholarships. Henry Gardiner instilled in his family the willingness, ambition and discipline to achieve goals. He challenged the beef industry to use science to develop tools which make rapid genetic improvements possible. Henry readily incorporated technology and embraced change in his own business and was always willing to educate others about how they could improve profitability. His vision and leadership positioned Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) as a world leader in providing beef cattle genetics and shaping the beef industry today and in the future. GAR is a family-owned ranching operation, producing registered and commercial Angus cattle. The original ranch was homesteaded near Ashland, Kansas, in 1885 by Henry Gardiner’s grandfather. Today, the ranch encompasses more than 48,000 acres in Clark County. The Gardiner operation sells approximately 2,600 bulls and 3,000 registered and com-

mercial females each year.

GAR is a founding member of U.S. Premium Beef, the producer-owned limited liability corporation with minority ownership in National Beef, the nation’s fourth largest beef processing company. By providing access to a proven value-added processing system through GAR delivery rights, customers have received more than $9 million in premiums and dividends. Three generations of the Gardiners are proud alumni of Kansas State University. More information can be found at www.GardinerAngus.com.

When Edmund married his wife, Alice, he had already established a small herd of cattle they decided to relocate to Leavenworth, Kansas. This is where they established their registered Angus herd in 1960. “I chose the Angus breed for a combination of reasons: one being the desire to start a high-quality beef herd with good fertility and maternal qualities,” Edmund said. “Another factor was as a child, I had more than my fair share of milking dairy cows.”

Mark, Larry and Jerry, three of Edmund’s sons, manage April Valley Farms today, but Edmund is still involved with the herd that consists of 180 spring-calving cows and 190 fall calving cows. The Theis family was recognized by the Kansas Angus Association this year as an honorary member. They also have had many show winning animals on a local, state and national level.
