TRUCKING:

Trucking will be provided by Raile’s to central points within a 300 mile radius. Reasonable fee for over 300 miles. We will start delivering bulls the week of April 11th for those not hauled on sale day.

Welcome To Raile Charolais and Red Angus. We extend a warm welcome to all our loyal customers and friends and also to our new customers. Your interest and support have been a blessing for many years and we “thank you”. Our program remains a balance of genetic traits. Single trait selection will lead to inefficiencies and less profit in the long term.

There are many EPDs to help guide us in the seed stock business. It is the pasture and stock fields that truly test our genetics. We cannot overlook “good ole” cowboy sense. Some of the basic things for efficiency are not measured by EPDs. Such things as body type, structural soundness and disposition have no EPDs. These traits are of utmost importance in a cow herd as well as how cattle perform in the feed lot. Selection for these traits rank at the top in our breeding program.

We don’t get too excited about the latest fad. A lot of “hype” leads to over use of some bulls. Feel free to come and look prior to the sale or call with any questions.

• Owned with Creekside Charolais in Colorado. 8823 is as good a walking bull as you will find. At 8 years of age he is still very fluid in his movement and covers the pasture well. He is a phenomenal breeding bull. Paternal grandsire is Grid Maker, the number one bull in the Charolais breed for registrations for several years. Since purchase, 8823’s EPD for BW has gone down and YW is rising – a good trend. His bulls ultrasound very well for marbling. He ranks in the top 3% WW and YW, top 30% REA and top 20% marbling. Top 2% TSI (Terminal Sire Index). Daughters are exceeding our expectations for udder quality and dispositions are excellent.

• Lots of length, thickness over the top and down through its quarter in this high performing bull. Note yearling and WPDA ratio backed up by WW and YW EPDs in top 15 % and TSI in top 20%. Out of a Super Charlie daughter and the long lived productive 0387 dam. 0387 produced several herd bulls until she retired at age 13. One of her first bulls was a prominent herd bull for Wooden Cross Cattle Company in Kansas. Another son was herd bull for Creekside in Colorado and Schmidt Cattle Company in Gordon, NE. • A Ledger 0332 son that we raised out of a Mark Sonderup bred cow. This was the best Ledger son out of the 2013 calf crop. We like his freedom of movement and structural soundness. He walks with a big stride on a large foot with lots of flex and agility. He is deep chested and big ribbed with a bulging hind quarter.

His individual performance is WW ratio of 100, YW ratio of 106, and ADG ratio of 117. He sires very uniform groups of bulls and females.

• This is the first calf crop of A023 offspring. His debut looks very promising! He sired very consistent quality, type and excellent disposition. The next four bulls are peas in a pod. • A Ledger 0332 son out of a double bred Grid Maker daughter. Grid Maker is known for producing bulls with big loin-eye and good marbling. His daughters have very nice udders and have good milk. We purchased 241 from Larry Ascherman in Missouri. He is a bull with excellent disposition and very sound structured. These two traits are our top criteria in selecting a herd bull. We need to start at the ground and go up when building breeding stock. When conditions get tough on the range or feedlot (mud, snow, cold) cattle with poor structure become very inefficient. He is a long strided easy moving bull. He sires a touch more frame than our other herd bulls. As a group, the 241 bulls have the highest WPDA and some of the highest actual weaning and yearling weights. Not often will a herd bull sire outstanding performance and still have offspring born easily. His EPDs are top 65% BW, top 20% WW, top 9% YW, top 3% REA, top 4% marbling. Top 5% TSI. He covers all segments of the cattle industry. His first offspring appear to follow the expectations of his own performance and predicted EPDs. He sires calves that are very aggressive at birth.

• Lot 18 and Lot 19 are very similar. A little more frame and maybe not quite as thick as the other 241 bulls. These two bulls were picked on and rode quite a bit by their pen mates. • Dam 745 is another high producing female. We have two daughters by 745 that are doing a superb job of producing performance cattle.

Hybrid Heifers

Much research has been done and data published proving the advantages of the crossbred cow over the purebred. Fertility, lifetime production and increased annual calf weights substantially favor the crossbred cow.

Data shows we get one extra calf out of the lifetime of the crossbred cow. I thought we realized the advantages of a crossbred cow herd 40 years ago. For some reason, we forgot about the advantages of “hybrid vigor” in the commercial brood cow herd. DO WE CALL THIS PROGRESS? When markets get tough again, which they will, we will need to look at all phases of production to increase profits. The crossbred cow may be part of that equation.

• Lot 96 through Lot 101 are half-sisters, ½ Red Angus and ½ Charolais heifers. They are all out of a nice group of second calf Red Angus females. They are heifer mates to the hybrid bulls selling as Lot 71 through Lot 77. I expect great production out of these heifers. If interested, some could be show heifers. They have the class, the style, the confirmation and structural soundness for show heifers and yet are the brood cow type.
