Welcome to the 21st Annual Sunflower Genetics Production Sale Thanks for your interest in our genetics and we look forward to seeing you on the 17th. No doubt, this is our most exciting day of the year. We’ve spent most of our lives building the cowherd and look forward to offering our genetics to you.

Over the past years a question that often pops up is: When are good genetics the most important; in good or tough times? The answer is very simple: Always! Regardless of the markets, good genetics are the most cost efficient thing you can purchase. Genetics are a long term investment, stacked upon many years of your decisions that will impact your herd for decades. My dad and many others put it in very simple terms, feeding a good one doesn’t cost any more than a poor one, so you just as well have cattle you can be proud of when it’s time to market them. A few extra dollars on a good bull, spread over several calf crops is an inexpensive investment considering the extra profit potential. A few more live calves, more pounds at weaning, more cows bred and calves that sell for more dollars, suddenly adds up to a significant difference in your bottom line. If you send them to the feedlot, good genetics can reap more extra dollars in your pocket.

The culls from our bulls over the last few years have averaged almost $100/head over cash markets. That in itself, will pay for a top end bull without even taking into account the higher quality heifer mates at home. Simply put, genetics are a great investment.

We continue to be a family operation that is looking to the future as the next generation becomes more involved in day to day activities. With both Jake and Ben working with Mary and I every day, things we only dreamed about are becoming a reality. Hardly a day goes by without the whole family gathering in the office and enthusiastically discussing the good, the bad and sometimes the ugly but mostly the humorous events of the day happenings. I really don’t know of a better way of life that anyone could enjoy. On a personal note, I was in a four wheeler accident last fall and did very little work for over three months. A very big thank you to everyone that helped keep things going while I was laid up. Family, friends, neighbors, and anyone else that stepped in to keep things going, I can’t thank all of you enough! I think many of us wonder what would happen if we aren’t able to keep up with the workload. I have been blessed with a glimpse of the future, Sunflower Genetics is in good hands.

Sunflower Genetics will retain 1/3 semen interest in all bulls sold.

The buyer purchases full possession and 2/3 semen interest.

Our goal in developing bulls is to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes Definition of Terms Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.

Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.

Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.

Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.

Ribeye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.

Color and Polled Status: Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.

Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.

Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.

Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) & Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR): Weight ratios compare an individual to the rest of his or her contemporary group at a given time. Ratios are expressed as a number with 100 being average. Any animal above 100 performed better than the average calf in their respective contemporary group. ET calves and twins do not ratio for WW or YW. New This Year - Test Gain Ratio (TGR): Test gain ratio was calculated by ADG from weaning to yearling divided by the predicted ADG based on the ration. In this case bulls are fed to gain 3.2 lbs/day. Many of which exceed that level of gain.

Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

“K.I.S.S.” - A Word on Selection Indexes Selection Indexes K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) K.I.S.S was an acronym I can remember being used growing up. Whether it was basketball coaches or livestock judging coaches it all meant the same. Sometimes we can make things more complicated than they need to be and K.I.S.S. is a good reminder to acknowledge that sometimes a simpler path does exist. Selection indexes do just that. However, they are based on complex calculations that are hard to follow and sometimes make you scratch your head, in the realm of indexes few fully understand the fine details. Nonetheless, the simplicity and impact one selection tool can have on your cow herd is unmatched. Most if not all breeds publish selection indexes, for this sale we will focus on the ones that relate to Angus and Simmental cattle respectfully.

$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size. $W—Expressed in dollars per head. The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning value. $B—Expressed in dollars per head. Helps explain differences in post-weaning and carcass value compared to calves of other sires.

TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

How do Angus and Simmental Indexes relate to each other?

When we look at selection indexes as they relate to each breed we try to simplify. API and $W are similar to one another. These indexes both focus on important traits that impact the cow herds long term profitability. In contrast TI and $B are similar to each other. Both favor cattle who’s progeny grow well after weaning and perform on the rail, ignoring maternal value.

What selection index is right for my cow herd?

As with EPDs, an evaluation of your own herd is a good place to start when it comes to determining what index is right for your cow herd.

If decisions are based upon the wrong index the results could be catastrophic. For example, if your goal is to build a cowherd anchored by reproductive excellence, longevity, calving ease, moderate cow size and optimum milk production to avoid high feed costs selection emphasis on $B or TI would likely result in a disaster. Same can be said if feedlot performance and retained ownership are goals and selection pressure is placed on $W and API, substantial profits would more than likely be left on the table.

The proper scenario to use TI and/or $B? If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

Fall Bull Management The fall bulls have been managed drastically different than the spring bulls.

FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE For several years now we have been retaining ownership on our cull bulls. Bulls who don’t make the cut are sent to Tiffany Cattle Company near Herrington, Kansas. Over the years the steers have done very well.

They have always gained well, been efficient, and graded with some of the best cattle in the industry. We always market our steers via US Premium Beef and the premiums over cash have average around $100 per head. Our expectations have been exceeded. These three bulls may be the best purebred bulls we have ever raised. We are continually looking for a purebred bull that has performance, looks the part and has an EPD profile to work in any situation. We finally found what we have spent years looking for.

D627 combines many things into one special bull. Hard to fault and impressive in every trait. We plan on collecting him and breeding lots of cows to him. D633 is a little stouter, but very similar and for many he may be their pick of the two bigger brothers. Little more thickness and ribeye. D616 got the short end of the stick when it comes to his recip dam. He was behind them at weaning but has really came on this winter. In the end, he may be the best breeding bull of the three.

Doesn’t matter how you look at them, they all have the potential to add many good traits to their calves.

COWHERD MANAGEMENT We have always felt our cows should not only survive but thrive under very similar management conditions as our commercial customers expect their cow herd to provide them a profitable business.

With that said, our cows are in a forage based system designed for them to take care of themselves. We strive to make the cows graze as much as possible with very little harvested feed. Under decent weather conditions the main cow herd grazes about 10 months of the year and are brought closer to home for calving. During winter months, a least cost forage based diet is fed. As soon as our cool season grasses are ready, cows are moved back to grazing cool.

With a little triticale and corn silage we have gotten our hay needs down to about 1000# a cow for the winter. Best of all, those grazing days the cows take care of themselves. In this type of management our cows have the opportunity to show their genetic potential and we know the resulting bulls will work for our customers.

Bull Development Program Striving to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat, is our main goal in developing bulls for our customers. We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3.2 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.

Bulls are developed in pens that offer plenty of wide open space for the bulls to exercise. These pens are surrounded by high tensile electric fence.

Breed Cattle that Fit Your Environment…

As you have probably noticed, we have not put our weaning and yearling weights in the catalog. Two very simple reasons for doing this: First, actual pounds have no influence on answering the question of which calves are the better doing ones in the bunch. How they compare to the contemporary group is what does matter. Using a basketball game as an analogy, you’re team scores 80 points you win right? Likewise, if the team scores 50 points, you lose. We all know in both cases you might win or lose. The formula for winning isn’t just about how many points your team can score, its much more complicated than that. At this point the deciding factor is how many points the opposing team scored.

Contemporary groups work the same way, by answering how a given animal compares to the average of his or her group. Ratios, not the actual weights are used to calculate the EPDs. EPDs themselves are even more important than ratios.

Sunflower Genetics Exclusive Bred Heifer Option We extend to you, an opportunity to buy an open yearling heifer at our sale in the spring and turn her into a guaranteed bred heifer in the fall. For an additional $400/heifer, we are willing to keep the heifer through the summer and provide breeding and development services. The $400 fee includes feed, pasture, labor, heat synchronization, Artificial Insemination, and exposure to one of our heifer bulls. All heifers will be managed the same as we manage our keeper heifers and exposed to the same clean-up bulls. The payment of $400 covers all cost up until October 1st.
