MARC WAILES DIRECTOR DISTRICT VIII Marc Wailes has served as Director of District VIII since 2017 and has been involved with the dairy industry for most of his life. He grew up on his parents’ dairy farm near Greeley, Colorado, along with his seven siblings. In addition to being involved with 4-H throughout his youth, Marc was also a member of 4-H dairy judging team, traveling to Columbus, OH. Marc went to Northeastern Junior College and then studied Dairy Science at Colorado State University. He worked at the university dairy farm and was a member of the CSU dairy judging team. Marc left college early after his father fell ill. He and his younger brother, Gregg, took over the family farm. They then, along with their father and Marc’s brother-in-law, purchased a farm near Holyoke, Colorado, and moved Double W Dairy to the new location.

As the years passed, the farm grew along with the number of cows. While farming in Holyoke, Marc met his future wife, Janel, and they were married in 1986. To this union, three boys were brought into this world. As the family grew, so did the farm. They farmed 1200 tillable acres and milked up to 1400 head of milk cows.

Marc and Janel have served in various offices in the Rocky Mountain Brown Swiss Association over the years. They also co-chaired the 2022 National Brown Swiss Convention in Loveland, Colorado. They have exhibited at several national dairy shows over the years and have helped with the Southwest National Brown Swiss Show and Sale.

In 2023, Double W Dairy decided it was time to start reducing the herd size and scale back the farm.

In June, they hosted a sale of half their Brown Swiss and Holstein herd. Then, unexpectedly, in the fall of 2023, a Colorado dairy farm made an offer on the remaining cows that was just too good to pass up.

Currently, Marc, Gregg, and Janel are finishing raising the remaining young heifers and selling them as springers.

After the sale of the cows in 2023, Marc’s brother-in-law, Glenn Huwa, was unexpectedly killed in an auto accident. Consequently, Marc, Gregg, and Janel are in the process of closing up the farm.

Marc has enjoyed judging county fairs and junior dairy shows over the years and would like to continue doing so in the future. He has thoroughly enjoyed serving on the Brown Swiss Board and fulfilling his lifetime goal to breed and develop a herd of Brown Swiss. Many Double W cows have graced the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo, winning awards over the years.

Double W has marketed approximately 25 animals to breeders across the country each year. They have been Premier Breeder at the Southwest National Show in 2017-2019, 2022, and 2023 and at the Wisconsin State Show. They were also Premier Exhibitor along with Udder Confusion Dairy in 2019 at the Southwest Show. In addition, the herd won the Progressive Genetic Protein Award for Group 4 in 2018 and 2019. Double W has received the Certificate of Quality Milk continually for 25+years from DFA, which also received the Herd of Distinction Award in 2014.

Marc is a well-respected member of the Brown Swiss community. When his term on the Board ends in June, he is looking forward to doing some traveling and, most of all, enjoying his grandchildren.

PICK AND CHOOSE There are a good many sire options offered in the Brown Swiss breed. You can set the criteria for your breeding goals based on the triannual Genetic Evaluations provided

by CDCB. The Superior and Qualified Sire ranking was established by the Board of Directors in 1968. This recognition was established to provide a way to rank the top proven bulls. Revisions have been made over time to accommodate changes. Remember, at that time there were only two evaluations for proven bulls per year. Think about it now. Today, you can check daily for new genomic listings on “wet behind the ears” calves.

Superior and Qualified Sire Recognition Requirements Bulls eligible to be designated Superior or Qualified must meet the recognition requirements for Progressive Performance Ranking (PPR), reliability, and type levels of the top proven bulls of the breed. Superior Sires must be at or above a PPR level approximately equal to the 80th percentile of all current Brown Swiss bulls in the December run by CDCB and updated on a yearly basis. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE When I first came up with the idea to have a President’s Message in each Bulletin, I thought that I could accomplish this goal with relative ease. That has turned out to not be the case. Like most things in life, if you want to do a good job, it will require effort. As each month goes by and the next publication deadline approaches, I receive an email from Dairy Agenda Today manager, David Jons, notifying me it is time for my next message. I think to myself, “I just did that.

Where has the time gone?” I am pleased to see that our advertising list is growing and the January issue was one of our thickest issues in some time. Thank you!

You may also have noticed that I have added a new feature to our Bulletin – Brown Swiss Board of Directors Member Profile. While we may know our directors in our respective regions, we may be less familiar with directors in other parts of the country. I wanted our members to get to know our directors on a more personal level, more than just through the questions that we answer when we run for our positions. Last month we featured our newest Board member, Dr. Kyle Thompson from District IX. This month, we will focus on our most senior Board member, Marc Wailes from District VIII. On a personal note, Marc and his wife, Janel, were the first two people that I met when I attended my first winter meeting in Beloit. They were very welcoming, and I will never forget their kindness to the new member of the Board.

In terms of Board action, our January meeting contained our normal routine items as well as some unique issues. The items out of the ordinary included a report from our Executive Secretary regarding a meeting he attended of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA), where changes to the showmanship rules for shows and changes to the classification unified scorecard were discussed. The increase of standard body weight is one of the items under review. Norm also attended a World Dairy Expo meeting.

As we look to the future, I have formed a new committee titled, “Office Restructuring Committee.”

Vice President Dayne Voelker is the chairman with directors Bruce Heilinger, Marc Wailes, and Laurie Winkelman on the committee.

Lastly, the Genetics Committee will be having several meetings to discuss possible changes to the PPR formula with the base change coming in April 2025.

Until I receive the next email from David, this will conclude another edition of “The President’s Message.”

about him and growing up on the dairy farm, and I was always fascinated by them.

As I said earlier, February is a special month for me, mostly because it is my birthday month, but I also got my roots in Brown Swiss in February. For my 13th birthday, I was gifted my first Brown Swiss heifer, Muffin. Muffin and I were inseparable from day one, and we still are, having celebrated her 8th birthday recently! We quickly took to the show circuit in North Carolina, where we learned many things, from how to prepare for a show to learning that you cannot always be first.

Muffin is the matriarchy of my herd, as my dad likes to call her, and rest assured, she knows she is the queen. Muffin opened doors to opportunities for me that I never knew were an option.

From the time that I was gifted Muffin to now, I have had many fantastic opportunities that I will forever be grateful for, including the chance to be this year’s Ambassador.

Flashback to where it all began...

February is a very special time for me, so I thought I would take a moment to tell you all about how I got my start with Brown Swiss.

Now, I may not have grown up on a dairy farm or live on your typical one now; trust me when I say that dairy farming is in my blood. When I say that it is in my blood, I genuinely mean that.

Two very influential men in my life whom I never met were dairy farmers long before I was born. My dad’s grandfather, “Grandaddy Stradley,” had a 200-head Brown Swiss dairy in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and while I never met him, I truly believe he is where I got my love of Brown Swiss cows from. I grew up hearing stories from my dad

Like Father, Like Daughters

Three sisters from Marysville, Ohio, have been working with the Brown Swiss breed. Elaina (19), Ava (16), and Audrey (14) Lahmers are actively involved with Brown Velvet Brown Swiss along with their parents, Chris and Elizabeth Lahmers.

“Honestly, the Brown Swiss have been around since I can remember,” Elaina Lahmers said. Elizabeth’s parents own Wabash-Way Holsteins in Western Ohio, so where did the Brown Swiss come from? “My dad brought them into our family,” Lahmers said with a smile. “We raise the heifers at our house, and our show cows are housed at Ackleys in East Liberty.” With approximately 20 head, the Brown Swiss are under the prefix Brown Velvet, and the Holsteins they own are under Lah-Dale Holsteins.

With the heifers housed at home, the three girls are able to keep them in show shape. “In the summer it’s largely our responsibility to wash and feed and work with the heifers when we are getting ready for the shows. But our dad takes on a bigger role during the school year because we are all involved in sports and other activities.” She continued, “The heifers are fed a special ration to make sure they aren’t too fat, but they get what they need to stay in shape and be reproductively sound.”

and I really loved my calf; it was a good experience.” Touting the advantages of Brown Swiss for youth, she points to their temperament, “They are pretty easy to work with, goodtempered, reliable, and pretty healthy. They are a dependable, sweet breed, especially for kids. And as you grow up, your love for them never goes away.”

As the Lahmers girls left the ring at Louisville last fall, they walked out leading the Grand Champion, Senior Champion, and the first place 4-year-old of the Southeastern National Brown Swiss Junior Show, Locin Stretch Tilly. Scored at 91 points, Tilly was a purchase from Locin Farm and took Elaina, Audrey, and Ava Lahmers on a winning ride. She was also Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Southeastern National Brown Swiss Junior Show in 2022 and 2023. “She’s probably my favorite cow right now, honestly. She’s always been mine, and I’ve enjoyed working with her.”

Two years ago when Elaina Lahmers was a senior in high school, one of her favorite moments in the show ring was when they had Grand Champion cow at the Ohio State Fair with Brown Velvet Rampage Fall E93, “She was one of the first Rampage daughters, we showed her as a fall calf at Louisville, and when she was 4th at World Dairy Expo as a milking yearling, and then Grand at Ohio State Fair as a three-year-old.” She continued, “Just watching her develop and putting in the hard work, it

was awesome to see it pay off.” Fall was Nominated All-American twice.

A Powerball daughter of Brown Velvet Rampage Fall is Brown Velvet Powerball Flannel Twin scored VG 86. She won her class at the Southeastern National Brown Swiss junior and open show in 2024 and was Nominated All-American Yearling in Milk in 2024.

Another standout is Brown Velvet Rampage Vinnie E91. She was a class winner at the Southeastern National Brown Swiss Junior Show as a two-yearold and was Reserve Grand Champion at Spring Dairy Expo Brown Swiss junior and open shows as a three-year-old. They sold her to Blessings Farm and Brian Garrison in 2024. Her Powerball daughter, Brown Velvet Powerball Vermont was Nominated All-American in 2023 and was Reserve National Bell Ringer in 2023 as a spring calf.

The Lahmers have used IVF on Fall and Vinnie that have produced several heifers they are pleased with. Expect to see Flannel as well as a couple of yearlings they are excited about in the show ring in 2025.

The Brown Velvet prefix was created when Chris and Elizabeth Lahmers were married. “When they married and began buying Brown Swiss together, my mom said they wanted a prefix that was just theirs,” Lahmers commented.

The three sisters each have a passion for sports. Elaina runs cross country plus indoor and outdoor track for the University of Kentucky, while Ava enjoys running cross country as a sophomore in high school, and Audrey plays soccer and basketball as an 8th grader. “We all kind of pick up the slack when the other one has practice or something. But in the summer, we all work together and it has its ups and downs, but mostly it’s good.”

While Chris Lahmers has been on the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo both as a judge and as an exhibitor, Elaina has yet to step onto the big dance floor. “It was always at the end of soccer season,

and we were in tournament play so we couldn’t go, and now with running in college, it’s the same thing, but someday I won’t have any other conflicts so I will be able to go to World Dairy Expo and enjoy it the whole time,” she said.

Lahmers is majoring in elementary education in college and while she is involved in the dairy club at UK, she is unable to be on the dairy judging team. “I judged in 4-H and FFA, but with running in college, my schedule is full.” She was high individual in the State FFA Dairy Judging Contest her senior year in high school.

Lahmers feels growing up with cattle has given her an advantage, “I think working with cattle has been a huge part of the discipline I have with school and with sports. It teaches you about how stuff has to get done, even if you don’t necessarily want to do it and how some things are out of your control, and you have to live with it and move on. And how hard work does pay off.” She continued, “This life has prepared me and made me tougher.”

Having grandparents who own a large dairy gave Lahmers some great childhood memories, “I remember when I would stay the night at their house, I would get so excited because my grandpa milked three times a day and I would go out at midnight and milk with him. I got to be in the parlor with him, and it was a lot of fun. Farming has always been a part of our family.”

The influence and success of her father in the dairy industry is not lost on Lahmers, “He is a huge part of why we have this opportunity and why we’ve had some success. He has a passion for the breed and this industry, and it’s amazing to see and be a part of. He has taught me everything I know.”

Lahmers looks to her parents as mentors, “I go to them with just about anything and everything. They really help me when stuff is tough and help me talk through it, and then they also tell me, ‘Well, you have to deal with it and dig it out.’”
