I can’t believe this is the sixth year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. The first year we did the sale I think my wife was questioning her choice in a spouse. She had no clue why anyone would come to buy our cattle. I am excited this year to bring her and my youngest boy with me to sale to meet all of you! I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country.

I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires.

Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive.

I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us more then to see the cattle working for our customers.

Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here.

She was a January but she was built like that kid in fourth grade that could touch the net and made everyone jealous. Fortunately for me, she quit growing and filled out and has become one of the most interesting pieces of the sale. She has a neck like a crossbred and a hip structure like one as well. These next two are the combination of strategic thinking, unrestrained internet bidding and, possibly, a little bit of luck. I purchased their mother and grandmother about four years ago in an online sale. She is, to this date, the most expensive cow I have ever purchased and was the first Red Angus cow I have ever owned. I love the idea of the Charolais/Red Angus cross and I think the Red Angus deal is getting hotter by the day. I jumped in and for once there wasn’t rocks tied around my ankles. I may have even had a life jacket on, for once in my life, because we hit the water swimming. Both of these females are exceptional in their rib shape and overall capacity, yet still keep a refined, angular front and possess some real power and bone for Red Angus females. They are out of a proven mother and grandmother who are both making their mark in my part of the world.

Trust me, whomever has a Red Angus female in their sales next fall will be extremely pleased with the redhead in their life. Both of their mothers have flushed extremely well and, according to my sources at Trans Ova, that is highly heritable. I would expect the same with these.

Multiple daughters sold in the $20,000 range with one for $22,000; I heard she was re-sold for $80,000. A full sister by PRIMO was Champion Angus, and 5th overall, at the 2018 Iowa State Fair FFA show. Add to the list the granddam, 5001, sold for $80,000. 5001 has multiple clones about to enter production and she is nearing the $1,000,000 mark in progeny sales. No sale is complete unless you have one of these prized animals. I have to have a Hereford every year just so the Hereford breeders can sit around the coffee shop and tell each other how stupid I am. Granted, they are probably correct, but with that being said, I am still not a Hereford fan. The one good thing about a Hereford is that you never have to take care of them in their old age because they have either blown their bag out, grown skis for toes, or they have lost both eyes before they get very old. They tell me this one does have a good pigment so she could only lose one of her eyes instead of both. Breed this one to MAB and let the internet sell the Hereford marked bovine for big dollars. In all honesty, the best bull I did ever see was the one and only, Miles. from Colyers. Breed her to him, or clubby, because color will even sell to the blind.

We have been dry as a bone since May and exactly one week before pictures we got .4 inches of rain. I realize, in the Midwest, that is a drizzle, but in this part of the world, that is ark building weather. We just about washed away! Cattle were knee deep in mud and water was running everywhere. As one looks through this catalog I hope they can appreciate the Hartman sires influence on the Simmental breds. My good friend, Ben Walbrecht, or as he’s known west of the Missouri River “Bin Laden,” told me last year he had the very best half-blood Simmental female, I had to buy. A lot of the Charolais influenced cattle are not pictured because after being torched, and our 4-tenths of rain, we were a big mud hole.

Yes, you read that right, .4 inches of rain and we were almost out of commission for a whole day because of the mud. The Charolais cattle just do not respond well to mud, burnt hair and cameras. This one is a maternal bred, club calf raising, female delight. She is packed with power, soft haired and good boned. Based on what her mother has done in the past, I expect her to be a great female in anyone’s herd.

One of the worst traits of a Charolais is a skunk tail…unless you’re trying to raise club calves or skunks. Manager of the year purchased this amazing beast from Mike Khulman a few years ago to lead off the bred heifer offering the following year. Of course with all good plans it never came to fruition and she was the only heifer out of 90 in her group that came in open. There was no way I was going to sell her with her full sister recently winning the Denver Stock Show, so I stuck her into the fall calving group and for lack of a better term, forgot her. She had a calf and this winter as I was going through the cattle I remembered who she was and brought her in to highlight the cow offering for this year. She’s about to have her second calf and it could be the humdinger we are all wanting to put on the front of our Show Circuit ad. My buddy, Mike, swears by this mating and I’m starting to think he’s sharper than he looks. It is hard to find a cow more powerful yet still maternal than this one. I found her this fall and kept her open specifically to be a feature for this sale. She is built like the girl in high school that wanted to wrestle but the boys were scared to tell her different. Rhonda Rousey in bovine form. She is stout, tough and taking names. This one could be a big time donor prospect. She is beyond impressive in every aspect.

It would have helped had someone not pooped on her back before picture day, but around here, if that’s the biggest problem we have, we are doing pretty good.

First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that.

We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs tree’d him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories.

I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure.
