Our program is based upon maternal genetics and industry leading customer service. Genetics are selected from sires to enhance a “Functional Maternal Focus” of traits with balance across the EPD profile, and the influence of genomics through embryo transfer, and artificial insemination. Be sure to read the three articles within the sale catalog entitled, Sire Selection, Timing Matters, and The Mother Cow. The articles explain the reasons for our convictions to the genetics offered through Haugestuen Ranches for the past 34 years. BULL DEVELOPMENT/PERFORMANCE TEST “BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls are bred, born, and raised right here on the ranch with “no creep” to allow them to exhibit their natural genetic makeup. Just mama’s milk and grass! Bull development begins with extensive planning and great genetics, the influence of the cow and environment while bulls are on pasture, the transition period during weaning, sound management while bulls develop, adequate nutrition for growth, and daily play yard activity. To lessen the importance of one criterion in comparison to another weakens the link between each in creating a herd sire expected to pass on his genetics for years to come.

“BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls transitioned into the development center October 1, 2021 and were fed a nutrient dense ration to express their genetic profile. All bulls were on a 75-day performance test targeting a 4 lb. average daily gain (ADG). This allows us to identify the genetic differences, yet not overfeed which creates development problems seen at a later age. As bulls get closer to sale day the ration becomes less energy with more fiber. By sale day the ration is similar to turn out for breeding season. We take bull development seriously to protect your investment! The bulls have access to a large dirt play yard 24 hours a day which creates a hard-active muscle rather than a soft-sedentary muscle. HERD HEALTH/FERTILITY/BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM All animals have been on a comprehensive health program as prescribed by, Dr. Andrew Dietsche, DVM of Scenic Hill Embryo Transfer, Bloomer, Wisconsin. All bulls will pass a fertility and breeding soundness exam (BSE) before delivery, by Dr. Edward Metcalf, DVM of Leading-Edge Veterinary Services, Hayward, Wisconsin.

GUARANTEE Animals are sold as guaranteed breeders! Haugestuen Ranches will stand behind every “BUILD YOUR HERD” bull for the first 90-day breeding season. If an injury occurs as a result of breeding, Haugestuen Ranches will guarantee the bull for the purchase price minus salvage value of $1,500.00 or we will provide a replacement bull to your satisfaction, if a bull is available. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian and claims must be made by September 15, 2022.

FRIDAY, APRIL 1ST SCHEDULE: Sale cattle can be viewed the day before the sale April 1, 2022 at Haugestuen Ranches from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Dr. Andrew Dietsche and Kirk Haugestuen will provide handouts and speak to the topic, “Understanding EPDs” from 5-6 p.m. Haugestuen Ranches will serve a smoked brisket meal at 6 p.m. Enjoy a time of fellowship, refreshments and a great smoked brisket. Come and view the bulls/females and enjoy the day! It is our pleasure serving you!

DELIVERY AND BOARD Free delivery on individual lot purchases of $2,500.00 to WI and MN. Bulls/heifers sold to other US areas and Canada will be delivered to central points at a reasonable cost between buyer and seller. Bulls will be fed free of charge until May 1, 2022, a fertility and breeding soundness exam (BSE) performed and then delivered. After May 1, bulls will be charged $4 per head per day for feed. Females not hauled sale day will be delivered the following week.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2ND SCHEDULE: SALE DAY SCHEDULE and BIDDING There will be no buyers fee! Your bid price is the actual cost for the lot being bid on. Buyers will have one week to settle payment with Hansen and Young. Sale day questions to Hansen and Young can be answered by Toya at (715)642-1821. SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASES If you are unable to bid, we can assist you with selecting the bulls or females to fit your program.

Bids may be placed at this time with hansenandyoung.com. The sale begins closing at 1PM on April 2, 2022. Each lot, beginning with Lot 1, will “soft close” in 2-minute increments, consecutively as listed in the sale catalog, lot 1 thru 45. If a lot has a contending bidder, each bidder will have 10 minutes to place their next bid before the lot closes. This process will continue until the bidding is finished on the lot. The lot will be closed and sold to the highest bidder. All animals are purchaser’s risk as soon as sale concludes.

SEMEN INTEREST Haugestuen Ranches retains ½ semen interest, and are selling 100% possession in all bulls. Semen collection for Haugestuen Ranches will be done at seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience.

The Mother Cow

The Mother Cow is the backbone of any operation, yet often she gets the least amount of credit for keeping an operation in business. We emphasize the economic traits of importance for the sire, but many times we don’t think much about the cow. What are her traits of economic importance? I think we will agree that fertility has to be at the top of the list. Beyond a doubt more cows are culled each year because they are open or will calve outside the calving season than any other reason. Next comes a long list of things like disposition, udders, feet, general structure and soundness, mothering ability, milking ability etc.

Some of these traits are included in the maternal index but without knowing the weighting of each trait it’s hard to know how much emphasis is put on each of the inputs. It seems to still be heavily weighted for performance. I think the answer is a good Longevity EPD. Cows that get it done year after year will generally have the qualities mentioned above so hopefully that’s where we are headed long term.

Reproduction in beef cattle is 10 times more economically important than growth traits. It’s 20 times more important than carcass traits. An extra calf, or more calves per cow herd, is the single largest factor in increasing pounds of beef. Getting cows and heifers pregnant in a timely manner is critical to reaping economic advantages. For every 21 days cows are open, we lose somewhere between 20 and 60 pounds of weaning weight.

FERTILITY MATTERS! How does a seedstock program select sires to use from the thousands available today?

The most profitable traits in any herd are fertility and longevity. We select sires based upon highly proven, maternally rich pedigrees. This can be tracked by the number of calves a cow has in a tight calving window, and by her age or longevity in the herd, and by proven sires in a particular pedigree. The sires must score reasonably high in $M and provide a balanced EPD profile of all other traits. We stay true to our maternal convictions, and stay away from the extreme numbers which may create imbalance in the pedigree.

Bruin Torque 5261 Torque is ideal for making deep-bodied, easy fleshing, docile sires and exceptional replacement females. Our registered cows must earn their stay in our program by eating grass, by raising a big calf with no supplementation, and NO CREEP FED. Then after placing extreme pressure on our cows to perform on grass, they must breed back in a 45-day window. Prolific cows showing true genetic evaluation; without high-cost feed resources, influencing ability to perform. 2021 breedup had 81% of our cow herd bred and calved out in 28 days. Our sire selection works because our cow herd performs. The management of our cow herd mimics the commercial cows run in our area by our customer herds.
