ver eleven years ago, I headed to Kearney to interview for a job that would change the lives of my family. Now, as I complete the 11th year of my employment and over 186,000+ miles later, the world, the Angus business and my family have experienced numerous changes. Our youngest son was 11 and would soon enter Jr. Hi. Today, he is nearly 23 and we just celebrated his wedding this past November. I’ve learned more about “Angus… The Business Breed”, how our state Association fits in the national picture and how our voting delegation conducts business at the American Angus Association annual meeting. I would never have guessed I would be participate in such a manner on the national level.

At the beginning, I basically communicated to members and the board by email, telephone calls and snail mail. Today, I rarely communicate by phone and snail mail, but frequently use email, text messages, and Facebook. But I don’t use Instagram, snap chat, I don’t tweet and I’m not linked in!

The Association is more financially stable, we have grown in membership from 163 members to over 220.

We’ve worked hard at making our Nebraska Angus News magazine one of the best breed publications in the state.

Today, we have companies calling us to tell us they’re placing a series of four ads where once I called them and felt like I was begging them to place just one ad. The magazine wouldn’t be as good today if I hadn’t learned all I could from Kami and Jessamyn about publications and design.

Probably one of the biggest reasons our corporation grew in strength was the vision and leadership of our officers and directors. In 2009, under the leadership of President Lemoyne Dailey, the directors, officers and I met during a weekend retreat and developed five goals that would guide and direct the association on the path to growth that we’ve experienced in the last eleven years. The vision and leadership of all the directors and officers during these years has been tremendous and it’s had a lasting impact on our organization. I couldn’t have

done my job so well without their support, advice and guidance.

But, the time has come to slow down, concentrate more on business “at home” and enjoy our boys and their families as they begin their lives as adults. I leave our Association in great hands. Remarkable leaders who put much thought and discussion into selecting Margo Lehn as our new Sec/Mgr. I ask of you, our members one thing…that you lend support to her… not to “fill my shoes” but as she “makes her own trail” as manager of our Association. Thank you for letting me experience such a great group of people…The memories and friendships from the last eleven years will last a lifetime. Thank you all for being a part of my life, it’s been an honor work with and for all of you.

And now that retirement is here…

I’ve been asked what will I do with all of my “extra time”…

Here’s just a part of my list: • Spend more time just enjoying family activities (top on my list) • one – house to deep clean • 22 – walls to paint in our home • four – carpets to shampoo • one – our own company website to keep current • begin to catch up on all those unsent Thank you, Christmas, birthday & anniversary cards • too numerous to count, craft and quilt projects to finish • two – lawn patches to restart, again…

t is a great honor allowing me to serve as your President this year and with that I thank you very much. In this upcoming year Mother Nature has definitely set us up with her own set of challenges, from Blizzards to rain and rain to mud. The good thing is we’re from Nebraska and we will get through it like we always do.

I would like to send out thought and prayers to the Lienemann family for Trevor’s passing. I appreciate the chance to work with him in the association and also everything he did and contributed to this organization. He will be deeply missed.

At the 2018 banquet the association honored John and Pat Daigger with the Producer of the year award.

They are a wonderful Family and Producer that have been in this business for many years. Congratulations!

Over the course of the past year and moving into this one the word that comes to mind is transition. There will be several this upcoming year, from Presidents, to Managers, and Board positions. Dave Nichols, thank you for everything you’ve done this past year it is greatly appreciated. We welcome new board members Jeff Johnson and Jay Nordhausen. I feel we have a strong active board and I look forward to working with all of you this year.

After several interviews I’m pleased to announce the hire of Margo Lehn from Long Pine, Nebraska as our new secretary/manager. The board feels she will be a great fit to take over those duties and lead our Association through our events.

With a new calf crop soon to be arriving, bull sale season will soon to be upon us, the thought of a New Years is always an exciting time. I would encourage all our members to be proactive this year in events. It’s always a great chance to learn new things about our industry and meet members of our great association. The 2018 tour I felt was a great success and it would be wonderful to see that in 2019. Be proud to be from Nebraska no matter what generation you are.

Help out with transitions if it’s at home, your community, or this organization! Together we achieve many things and strive for a stronger Nebraska Angus Association.

ecently our friends at the Red Angus Association released an excellent white paper relevant to us all, “Phasing Out Select Grade Beef”, which examines shifting consumer preferences toward higherquality beef and our industry’s top-down response. As the top-marbling breed, Angus cattle have, and will continue to, play a pivotal role in rising to meet and even exceed our consumers’ expectations.

Market signals and hard work by cattle producers and feeders has resulted in a slash to the percentage of U.S. beef grading Select in the past 10 years, from about 40% to near 18%. As the tonnage of Choice beef increases and Select beef decreases, the ChoiceSelect price spread has been slowly rising. Choice beef continues to carry a sizable premium versus Select. In 2006-2007, the value of Choice beef was 55% greater when compared to the value of Select beef. Ten years later, the value of Choice beef stood 314% above the comparable value of Select. In fact, the production of Choice and Prime beef has never been greater than it is today. Industry averages of Choice beef have consistently risen to about 70%, and exceeding 80% for Choice and Prime combined is now the norm. Prime beef historically accounted for 2% to 3% of all fed beef, but Prime more recently has risen to 6% to 8% of the quality grade mix.

The shift is overwhelmingly evident, and the reason is multi-faceted.

The first contributor to the positive change is utilization in the seedstock sector of new and invaluable tools that have been added in the past couple of decades: DNA testing and enhanced Marbling EPDs. The average Marbling EPD among larger Bos Taurus breeds (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental, Gelbvieh, Charolais and Limousin) has been accelerating upward.

With marbling being a moderateto-highly heritable trait, when commercial herds are “stacked” with high-marbling sires for successive generations, rapid progress toward higher quality grades is achieved. Individual herds following this path often produce cattle grading 80% upper 2/3 Choice and Prime, with zero Select carcasses. This affirms what we already know well: beef quality starts with superior genetics.

The second contributor to the phasing out of Select beef is a shift in breed makeup with more Angus influence, and a decline in registrations among Bos Indicus derivatives, which rank lower for marbling and historically contributed significantly to the production of Select Beef.

The third contributor has been in the cattle feeding sector, which has added an average of three weeks of time on feed in the last 20 years, resulting in more fat deposition. Simultaneously, packers have become more accepting of heavier carcasses and more lenient on yield grade 4s and 5s, supporting fatter endpoints and ultimately, helped create more Choice and fewer Select grade carcasses.

Finally, we must look to the pullthrough effect of branded beef programs. There are 90 main branded beef programs currently listed by USDA, of which Certified Angus Beef is the largest, and 78% require an Angus phenotype/genotype or include the generic use of “Angus” as part of the brand name. Many of these programs have followed Certified Angus Beef’s lead in requiring Upper 2/3 Choice or Prime grades to qualify.

The elimination of Select Grade beef is simultaneously good for producers and consumers, and is being phased out for the right reasons: 1) it is consistently worth less than Choice beef, 2) consumers find it less appealing and less satisfying, and 3) Select beef costs essentially the same to produce as Choice.

As Angus breeders, let’s keep an eye on the changing landscape of our product, so we can continue to assist our customers in meeting the demands of the market.

point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

The 13-year-old daughter of Brandon and Kami Meyer attends Blue Hill Schools. She is a member of the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association.

She has participated in state and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Kasey participated in the photography contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. She also participated in the mentoring program in 2016.

Kasey consigned cattle to the 4M Angus/Burken Cattle Company Sale.

The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet

Junior Spotlight

Nolan Poss, of Scotia, NE competed as a finalist for the 2019 Angus Ambassador. Sponsored by the Angus Foundation, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Ambassador Program was created to provide educational opportunities for juniors who want to become a better advocate for not only the breed, but also for the livestock and agriculture industries as well. It is designed to recognize one outstanding junior Angus member who will support the Angus breed and the consumption of Angus beef on a national and international level.

“The NJAA Angus Ambassador program is very important to encourage juniors to advocate on behalf of the Angus breed and cattle industry,” said Jaclyn Upperman,

Association director of events and education. “The competition was steep again this year, and we continue to have many great applicants who believe in advancing the breed.”

The applicants send in their cover letter and resume and answer two industry-based questions in the application process. The top five

were then invited to the Angus Convention to compete in the second part of the contest. The contestants went through an interview with the same panel of judges and created a presentation about an Angus-related subject of their choice.

Nolan is attending the University Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in agriculture economics with minors in animal science and more specifically the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars program. Nolan received his first Angus cow as a birthday present from his parents and his herd has since grown to nearly 30 cows. Nolan’s presentation topic was the new Angus Link genetic verification program for commercial cattle producers.

revor l. lieneMann Trevor L. Lienemann, 51 of Martell, passed away on November 24, 2018. Born August 12, 1967 to Leon and Nelvie Lienemann in Lincoln, NE. Owner and operator of Lienetics Ranch, Lienemann Management Productions, and Inventor of the Bextra Haysaving Bale Feeder.

Member and Past Director of the Nebraska Cattlemen, Member and Past President of Local Nebraska Cattlemen’s Affiliate, Member, Director, and Past President of the Nebraska Angus Association, Lifetime Member of the American Angus Association, Host of State, National, and International Beef and Chef Tours at Lienetics Ranch, Host of the 2016 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. He was also a member of the UNL Alumni Association, Lincoln Berean Church, and St. James Catholic Church. A graduate of Norris High School, and UNL College of Business in accounting.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Torri Lienemann; children, Maci (Kale) Mueller, Taylon, Sydni, and Skylar Lienemann; parents, Leon and Nelvie Lienemann; mother and father in law, Fernando and Elnore Ortiz; grandmother, Dena Trauernicht; brother, Thad (Stormy) Lienemann; many nieces, nephews, family, friends and loved ones. Preceded in death by his grandfather, Alfred Trauernicht; grandparents, Henry and Anna Lienemann.

Celebration of Life service was Thursday (11-29-18) at Lincoln Berean Church, Lincoln, NE. Memorial gathering with family greeting friends was Wednesday (11-28-18) with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed towards First State Bank, for the Lienetics Scholarship.

essage froM trevor’s faMily…

We struggled to figure out the perfect thing to say a about Trevor.

He was so much more than a husband, father, son, friend, cattlemen, neighbor, host. We wanted to share how impactful his life was, and how he strived to emulated the “Good to Great” principle (i.e. Good is the enemy of Great) in everything he did, but anyone who encountered him already knows that. He was a Great guy! Instead, we’ll share that

Trevor’s life on earth was not easy, from work, to play and everything in between Trevor went hard, life was hard. Trevor suffered from depression for many years. As a family, we enjoyed many ups, but also struggled through numerous downs and fought hard alongside him. However, in November, he lost his earthly battle, but gained eternal peace.

Looking through photos to prepare for the memorial service, we found one of our all time favorites of Trevor reading to the kids. These words seem more relevant today than ever.

The last page of the book reads: Small said, “But what about when we are dead and gone, will you love me then, does love go on?”….Large replied, “Look at the stars, how they shine and glow, some of the stars died long ago. Still they shine in the evening skies, for you to see…love like starlight never dies…”

Trevor’s love will never die. It will live on through his family.

Trevor wanted so much to leave a legacy for his children; however, the legacy he left was his children. -~ Torri

NAA Presidential Spotlight

D

ave nichols Outgoing Nebraska Angus Association President Dave Nichols resides near Chambers, NE. Born in Neligh, Dave grew up in the Bartlett community. He met his wife Lynn (who is from Atkinson) while they were students at UNL. They married in 1988. Dave and Lynn purchased their first registered heifer in 1994. They have one son, Taylor and a daughter Nicole. Both of their children have been involved in the Nebraska Junior Association so there is show experience in the family as well as the production and contest side of Junior activities.

Before joining the Nebraska Angus board of directors, Dave had numerous leadership experiences that paved the way to his successful officer track for the Angus Association. Dave is a graduate of the Nebraska LEAD program, finishing his two year program in 2009. He also serves on the Holt County Fairboard, he’s chairman of the Chambers United Methodist Church board, serves on the Chambers Beef Boosters committee and also served a stint on the Sandhills Cattle Association board and is Past President for that group. He is past Treasurer for the Niobrara Valley Electric Coop.

One of his most enjoyable experiences on the board has been the development of the friendships and relationships with other board members and breeders in Nebraska. The networking, participating in and going on annual tours and other Association events throughout the state has been invaluable to Dave, his family and their operation. The Nichols family currently markets their bulls through an annual bull sale in March.

Advice that he would offer new members of the Association is that they get involved. Go to activities, don’t be afraid to ask questions and

suggest ideas. Our Association can only grow and become stronger with member participation. In the future he’d like the Association to continue to see growth in membership, and in turn see Association event growth through added membership participation, such as the annual tour. He’d like to see innovative ways to keep our Association one of the Premier Angus Associations in the world.

As for his term as President, Dave didn’t really have “specific goals” but rather saw an “overall plan of work” that will make the Association stronger in years to come.

He feels the board now has the “ball rolling” on a few things and the incoming President and current directors will be able to see the plan of work through to completion. One final bit of wisdom he’d share with readers and members, with a new Sec/Mgr coming on board for the Association, “Please be understanding and patient. There are going to be changes, be supportive of Margo Lehn, our newly hired Sec/Mgr. Her learning curve may be demanding to start with, but the Association hired the candidate with the most of the best, to lead us into the future”.

ohn & Pat Daigger This year’s Producer of the Year Award is well-deserved as the recipients have built their operation from the ground up with determination and grit!

Their story starts long ago in the heart of the Sandhills. John grew up near Ringgold, Nebraska. His mother was a school teacher, and his father worked for the county department of roads. His extremely hard work ethic and drive to excel started here. He and his brother were to tend to the sheep, fix fences, and work in the hayfields. John as a child dreamed of having his own cattle ranch and begged his father to buy cows but to no avail. At around the age of 11, John began to work summers for the Musser family west of Tryon, Nebraska where he met his future wife, Patricia.

Pat was born in a sod house north of Stapleton, Nebraska.

Hard work has never been unfamiliar to her! Her Aunt Gertie Musser needed Pat’s help on the Musser ranch to help tend the stock and to prepare meals for a large crew of workers. If you've ever spent any time with Pat around animals you know that she has a special sense and connection to all animals.

John and Pat began to date after high school, and continued their relationship while John headed to Barber School in Lincoln. After graduation, he and Pat were married November 27th 1965. John barbered full-time for a few years before buying the Avery Ranch near Tryon in 1969 and stocking it with their own commercial cattle. In 1974, they took over the Musser Ranch, of which they were both well acquainted.

The Daiggers were progressive in their management of their herd of Angus-influenced commercial cattle.

They were recording birth weights and manually adjusting weaning weights

to 205 days of age. They had also begun an artificial insemination program. The jump to registered Angus cattle in the mid-1970s seemed to be a path of natural progression.

A purchase made in 1976 really set the foundation for the future of Daigger Angus. John and Pat bought a semi load of Angus cows that were bred to Band 234 of Ideal 3163. Those cows' daughters were truly tremendous. They bred those daughters to P S Power Play, which was an excellent mating. They continued to use Power

Play with great success for quite some time. John and Pat realized the importance of carcass traits very early on.

They carcass-evaluated many of their early herd sires. They were also early adopters of new technology. They began to carcass ultrasound all of their bulls and replacement heifers at the inception of that technology.

John became a Life Time Angus Association Member in the late 1970s, John served on the Nebraska Angus Association Board as a commercial representative in the 1980s. He and Fred Kraye of Mullen would carpool to Kearney for the meetings. Can you imagine the good times that they had?!! In the mid-80s John and Pat sold their first registered bulls in the Nebraska Angus Association Sale in Mullen. They consigned to several sales there before they began a joint sale with other producers in 1987.

In 1989, John and Pat made the decision to move to North Platte. They bought a place southeast of North Platte that had the attributes necessary to become a fully functioning bull and heifer development facility that was close to feed and hay supplies. The mama cattle stayed on summer grass and winter range at Tryon, but were calved and AIed in North Platte. That is still the current program.

1989 was also the year of the First Annual Daigger Angus Production Sale. Later on, a sale barn was built on site so the annual sale could be hosted right at the ranch headquarters. Many successful sales have occurred in that barn, and many herd sires have sold there. Some stud bull highlights include: Daigger 901, Victory, Deliverance, and Pay Dirt 546.

In 2002, the Daiggers bought a few foundation Red Angus cows and bred some Angus cattle to Red Angus bulls to aquire Category II Red Angus progeny. They became Red Angus Association of America members the following year. Their youngest daughter Ruth married David Orr in 2005. A few years later David and Ruth joined the operation, becoming Daigger - Orr Angus and Red Angus.

John and Pat have worked sideby-side their entire marriage, as equal partners, to build a progressive and meaningful operation. They built their family and ranch on steadfast determination, prudence, and integrity. John and Pat raised five daughters and taught them the stewardship of the land, the worth of the stock, and the value of a good work ethic! Their daughters are: Ginger (Tory) Smith of North Platte NE, Mary Daigger of Cheyenne WY, Betty Daigger of Jacksonville FL, Gladys (Mike) Henry of North Platte, NE, and Ruth (David) Orr of North Platte NE.

ntroDucing our new secretary/Manager It is a great pleasure to introduce our new Secretary/Manager Margo Lehn. Margo and her family, husband Jason and daughter Jaiden, make their home in Long Pine, NE. She brings extensive clerical experience, office management and scheduling, an understanding of tax reports, vast knowledge of information management, business and people skills to the position. She is also familiar with livestock and the Angus business, being raised on a commercial Angus ranch in North Central Nebraska. She’ll be a quick study when it comes to learning about the position and it won’t be long until she begins to put “her stamp” on events, activities, publications and communication.

We have already begun the transition to her employment, having many conversations on what to expect in the next few months. Watch for information about our office changeover, our new address and a phone number through email news updates. Our email address (info@nebraskaangus.org) and website (www.nebraskaangus.org) will remain the same, at this time.

Membership renewals will be sent out after the first of the year. We have lots of “office setup” steps to complete yet and it will all take time. Please be patient but don’t hesitate to reach out to Margo and welcome her to our “Angus Family”.

ngus heritage founDation inDucts five new MeMbers Angus breeders and supporters honor industry leaders.

Over the past 130 years, the Angus breed has established itself as industry leader for quality and advancement.

This reputation was built by innovators and visionaries who possess drive and wise decision-making skills to better the breed and the industry.

Each year, the American Angus Association® celebrates those innovators and visionaries by selecting individuals for induction into the Angus Heritage Foundation. On Nov. 6 during the 2018 Angus Convention in Columbus, Ohio, five Angus industry leaders were added to this prestigious group.

The 2018 inductees are Keith Arntzen, Montana; Evelyn Edmunds, South Carolina; Mark Gardiner, Kansas; Donna Holmes, Missouri; and Lowell Minert, posthumously, Nebraska. Read more about Nebraska’s own Lowell Minert.

Lowell Minert (1940-2016) was a lifelong Angus breeder who purchased his first Angus heifer for his 4-H project. He and his wife, Carrol, started their Angus operation in 1964 near Dunning, Nebraska, where they owned and operated Minert/Simonson Angus Ranch.

Lowell took an active leadership role in the beef industry, serving on the board of directors and as chairman of the Purebred Council of the Nebraska Cattlemen. He served two terms as president of the Nebraska Angus Association, two terms on the American Angus Association board of directors and was president of the Certified Angus Beef board.

Lowell was a people person who enjoyed supporting young people in their endeavors and sharing his passion for Angus cattle with people across the country and the world. His ranch has hosted Angus and cattlemen tours and groups from Argentina,

College-age students gain valuable knowledge of the Angus industry through summer internships.

Applications are now available for college-age students to apply for the American Angus Association®, Angus Media, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), and Angus Foundation 2019 summer internships. These 10-week, paid internships provide hands-on opportunities in the Angus business.

The five internships being offered are: Angus Media: This writing-intensive opportunity offers the chance to participate in producing publications, including theAngus Journal, Angus Beef Bulletin, Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, Angus Journal Daily, editorial websites and social media. The internship can be tailored to applicants’ strengths, but many duties can be anticipated, including traveling to industry events. Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography are strongly suggested.

Communications: From print stories to TV scripts, photography, graphic design and more, the communications intern will truly gain valuable agricultural communications experience. Applicants should have strong writing and design skills and have completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media would be helpful.

Events and education: The intern will assist in planning and executing youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), including preparations, correspondence and coordination for junior shows and events. Applicants should be a selfstarter, detail-oriented and outgoing with the ability to work well with others. Livestock and event planning experience is a plus but not required.

Travel to the 2018 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference and other events is expected.

Angus Foundation: This internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in 501(c)(3) not-forprofit organizations, resource development (fundraising) and purebred livestock association-related careers. The intern will be integral in facilitating the Foundation’s activities, programs and projects and will learn about the functionality of a nonprofit and how the Angus Foundation successfully raises funds to support education, youth and research for the advancement of the Angus breed.

AGI: Students pursuing their master’s degree or PhD in animal breeding and genetics should apply for the AGI summer internship. The intern will have the opportunity to work with one of the world’s largest beef genomic databases. The internship will be focused on research that involves data analysis, so candidates should have experience in analyzing animal breeding data sets and genomic data.

Application deadline for the Angus Foundation sponsored YCC representative is Jan. 11.

The Angus Foundation will once again sponsor an Angus leader to attend the 2019 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC), to be held May 29 – June 7, 2019. The application deadline is Jan. 11, 2019, and submission details can be found on the Angus Foundation website.

YCC is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience all aspects of the beef industry. The week-long conference is a nationwide tour of the beef production chain. All segments of the industry are included on the tour, from ranches and packing plants to market-

ing and regulatory affairs and consumer foodservice.

“The Foundation is thrilled to sponsor an outstanding Angus leader to attend the 2019 Young Cattlemen’s Conference,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “This conference is a great opportunity for young Angus breeders wishing to learn more about the beef industry.

Sponsored participants are ambassadors for the Angus breed, and the knowledge and experience gained from being in the YCC program will equip them to be even more effective advocates on behalf of Angus breeders in the future when interacting with consumers, legislators and others not familiar with beef cattle production and our farming and ranching way of life.”

The sponsored attendee will have travel costs and registration fees covered by the Angus Foundation. Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 50 and must be an active member in good standing with the American Angus Association and an active NCBA member. John Dickinson, owner of Parnell Dickinson Incorporated, was the 2018 Angus Foundation sponsored attendee. The Sacramento, California, native said the YCC was a great opportunity for learning and networking with other cattlemen and women from across the country.

“I would never have had this opportunity without the Angus Foundation,” Dickinson said. “They take care of every cost and expense and really set you up to succeed. The huge takeaway is the folks that were on that trip are impressive, and every one of them is familiar with the American Angus Association. To be able to represent the Angus breed in this capacity – I couldn't have been more honored.”

Angus Foundation scholarships applications are available online.

Scholarship applications are now available for college students affiliated with the Angus breed. The Angus Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students each year as a way to help Angus youth achieve their education goals and offset the continually rising costs of tuition at higher education institutions.

“Angus youth are certainly the future of this industry,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president.

“Higher education costs continue to rise and we want to help the students get a head start, and awarding scholarships is just one way to help.”

Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and currently be an active Junior, Regular or Life member of the American Angus Association. The following documents are required to be considered for a 2019 undergraduate or graduate scholarship: the 2019 scholarship application; three letters of recommendation; copy of current high school/college/university transcript; and applicant’s Association member code. Undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications, eligibility requirements and application guidelines can be found online at angusfoundation.org. Applications are due May 1, 2019.

Allied Angus Breeders Scholarships The Angus Foundation will also award three $1,000 scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics.

Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed.

Applicants or their parents/ guardians must be members of the American Angus Association or have an affiliate member code. The applicants or their parents/guardians must 38 • Nebraska Angus Association New • January/February 2019

have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2016).

The scholarship is applicable to any field of study. A separate application, from the general Foundation application is required for the Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship. The application can be found on the Angus Foundation website. Applicants having received or applied for Angus Foundation undergraduate scholarships using our standard general application this year or in past years, will not be considered for this scholarship.

Certified Angus Beef/National Junior Angus Association Scholarship Since 1990, the NJAA has teamed up with Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) LLC to help Angus youth pursue their higher education goals. The selected applicant will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A separate application, from the Angus Foundation scholarship appli-

cation, is required for the CAB/NJAA scholarship. Requirements are similar to the general Angus Foundation scholarship; more details can be found on the application. The application is available on the Angus Foundation website.

“Two core areas of the Foundation’s mission are youth and education,” said Jenkins. “Our Angus and allied commercial producer youth deserve the best higher education learning environment they can experience, and these scholarship opportunities help make that possible.”

Sign reading

By Nicole Lane Erceg The sign reads “Welcome to Grant County,” in simple white letters on a small, forest green backdrop. It sits near a creek more than an hour’s drive from where I grew up, but every time I see it, I already feel like I’m home. At this landmark, the air begins to smell different and the scenery—though to the untrained eye not seemingly dissimilar to the miles behind—is distinctly more familiar.

It’s a sign that I’m in the right place.

Most would breeze by this small signal and I’m sure many do. I only notice because of its significance to me.

For the cattle industry, market signals can offer the same perspective.

Data, seasonal changes, articles providing the same advice on vaccination programs or colostrum importance are all too familiar. They don’t often stick out, and we proceed onward.

Others, like signals from consumers, we expect to stick out as noticeably as traffic lights.

But these important signs don’t always flash brightly on the side of the road. In the late 1980s, it wasn’t big, bold lettering that called the industry’s attention to true consumer preferences.

It was a quiet sign on the side of the road that simply read, “Marbling.”

Today we see the significance. The number of cattle in the Select grade decreased by nearly half over the past decade. Consumer demand for beef, both domestically and abroad, is growing. The beef supply today is the best ever in quality grade, at unprecedented historic levels. At the same time, price spreads between Choice and Select have maintained.

All signs say we’re headed in the right direction.

It’s the result of small changes, incrementally over time, that brought us to this rise in quality, value and demand. Those who saw the marbling sign and headed in that directed have won in premiums and stronger demand for that growing share of all beef that is simply better today. Those who have stayed on the road to higher marbling have seen the continued opportunity to grow profits.

Moving into a new year is an ideal time to reflect on the understated signals directing us on what changes to make and where to double down.

Does that comment from your neighbor on trying genomic testing come to mind? Maybe it’s time to evaluate a creep feeding program or a rotational shift that will get this year’s spring calves off to the right start. This might be the year to elevate your bull selection criteria beyond what’s already working well, moving the target higher on traits that add value and demand, and could use some added performance in your herd.

Signals for needed change aren’t always obvious. We have to look for those signs. When we do so with an eye toward what matters most for the farm, ranch or herd in 2019, we might see some that don’t call for grand modifications, just small adjustments.

In planning for year ahead, look around for the familiar and new signs that nudge us to keep moving in the right direction.
