Happy New Year to our members and readers!

As I sit here and write this column, I think about what I have learned within the Nebraska Angus Association, the wonderful people I have met, and I cannot believe I am starting my sixth year in this role. The cattle and livestock industry has always been a passion for me, and ten years ago I would have laughed if you told me I would be leading an Angus organization, putting together magazines, and organizing big events, when my original goal was to be a cow doctor preg-checking, doing C-sections, and more. Life has its way of leading you into directions you can never predict, but I am very happy it has led me to this organization. Thank you to everyone who continues to support me! I am excited for another year to represent the cattle producers of Nebraska and provide opportunities for our next generation.

A new year brings new things to the Nebraska Angus Association.

Soon member production sales will be in full swing. This issue is full of sale advertisements for breeders holding their sales at the beginning of the year.

I challenge you to take a look at all the bulls and females being offered these next few months. Registered seedstock and commercial producers work really hard to provide top quality Angus cattle for you and the consumer.

Along with sale ads, you will find results from the royalty contest and the Nebraska Junior Angus Winter Show. A wonderful royalty competition was held December 7th in Kearney in conjunction with the winter show. Selected for Nebraska Angus Queen was Loganne Barta of Yutan, and Nebraska Angus Princess Zoey Malander of Belgrade. These young ladies will spend the year going to member production sales, attending Nebraska Angus and Nebraska Junior Angus events, and will participate in other youth activities.

If you would like to meet Loganne or Zoey, or have them attend your production sale, please reach out to the Nebraska Angus Association office.

These young ladies are eager and excited to represent our state association.

To conclude this letter, I would like to remind you that the 2025 membership renewal form has been sent out. For our current members you would have received the membership form with the winter newsletter, and the 2025 sale postcard. Also, in the mailing you would have found a poll of whether or not you would be interested in consigning to a Nebraska Angus Association state sale. For the past couple of years, the board of directors have been discussing how the association could provide another successful marketing opportunity for our breeders. Please give your feedback if you would participate or be interested in a state association sale. The board is depending on this feedback to help make a decision.

It is truly an honor to work alongside so many dedicated individuals who share a passion for the Angus breed and the future of our industry. I look forward to the continued success and growth of our association as we move into the new year.

A heartfelt thank you to Brian Stoller, who served as president in 2024. Brian’s leadership and commitment have been invaluable to the Nebraska Angus Association, and we all greatly appreciate his hard work and dedication.

I also want to extend a special thank you to the delegation of Nebraska Angus members who traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Angus Convention November 1-4.

he winter brings a lot of different feelings – the feeling of exhaustion working out in the cold, feeling of thanks for what you have and a feeling of joy celebrating the holidays with friends and family. I know I am looking forward to family time and am so thankful for what my family does to keep our cattle business moving during the cold season.

A new year brings new beginnings – much like many might have new members to their cattle herds during calving. In the Auxiliary – we had a successful year and look forward to growing more in the new year.

As an Auxiliary – we didn’t meet as often as we had planned this year – but still had a strong presence in everything we could! The Auxiliary supported our members at NCC The Classic, the Nebraska State Fair and the junior members at the National Junior Angus Show, among other events. We are proud to support these organizations and their passion for the Angus breed!

Earlier this month, we hosted the 2025 Nebraska Angus Queen and Princess competition. Kortney Tarnik, Queen Committee Chair, put together a fabulous event where we had two juniors in the Queen and Princess competition compete for the title. We are happy to recognize Loganne Barta as the 2025 Nebraska Angus Queen and Zoey Malander and the 2025 Nebraska Angus Princess. We can’t forget all the work that our 2024 royalty, Addi Crouse and McKinley Stoller, put in to represent our breed and organizations at various events.

Thank you, Margo Lehn, for supporting this event and helping us along the way! Keep an eye out for Loganne and Zoey throughout the year at various events. If you would like them to attend your event or sale – please reach out to Margo or myself!

We are thankful for the opportunity to have met new women involved in the Angus breed at the banquet. Anyone is always welcome to join our organization – no matter your level of involvement in the Angus breed! We hope to have our annual meeting soon – so be on the lookout for that. As an Auxiliary, we strive to find a central location to meet in person, while also including a fun activity. We would love for you to join us as we grow and serve our Nebraska Angus Association and Nebraska Junior Angus Association!

Our next meeting will be held in person in January. We are finalizing the date and will get it shared soon!

In this winter season – I hope you all remember the true reason for the season and those who helped you get to where you are today. Continuing the legacy of those before you – or even starting your own – is something to be proud of. This season is always the hardest with the calving bringing the cold along with it. Remember why you are here and your purpose for the passion of raising Angus cattle.

As we jump into the busy holiday season I hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying their break from school! To kick-off our winter season our junior association just recently held our annual Winter Kick-Off show in Kearney. We had a great weekend filled with fun, friends, and angus cattle! We held our junior meeting Saturday December 7th. Later that evening was our family fun and awards night banquet which was new for us this year. At this banquet the crowning of the new queen and princess was presented.

Congratulations Loganne Barta and Zoey Malander! Scholarships along with a couple other awards were presented and we ended the night with some fun games for the juniors!

The night was a blast and it's always a good time reuniting with our angus family.

The next day was the show where we had great numbers and insane depth! It was a very competitive show and I congratulate all of those who won. Be sure to be on the lookout for more coming from the Junior

Association in regards to our winter kick-off show in future years! We’re excited for new ideas and looking forward to more to come. As we continue on with the winter show season a few majors such as Cattlemen's Congress in Oklahoma City and National Western Stock Show are coming up so be on the lookout! Upcoming is our NeJAA semen auction that will be from January 10-18th and online at Angus Live this year. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to any officer or advisor! Nebraska Angus Association Scholarship Application Due March 15, 2025 Send to Margo Lehn, Po Box 245, Long Pine, NE 69217 Please return by mail or email to: info@nebraskaangus.org (if sending by email please confirm it is received) The Nebraska Angus Association annually offers scholarships to Angus youth. This year we are proud to announce that the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary will be partnering with this scholarship again and we will be offering $1,250 in scholarship money. The winners will be announced at the Nebraska Junior Angus State Show in June. Individuals who have been awarded this scholarship in past years may reapply but no more than $1,000 will be awarded to any one individual.

Applicants must be a Nebraska resident, current member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and current junior member of the American Angus Association or, if over 21, a former member of both organizations. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate who will be enrolling in a 2 or 4 year post high school educational program in the coming year. Applicant’s parents must be members of the Nebraska Angus Association.

NAA Presidential Spotlight

rian Stoller The Nebraska Angus Association Past President Brian Stoller has been involved in the Angus industry his entire life throughout different parts of the country. Brian was born in Sonora, California, and grew up in Angels Camp, California, which is located in the north central part and found in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. In 2001 he moved to Melba, Idaho, and then to Palisade, Nebraska, in 2008 where he currently operates Bear Mountain Angus.

Brian and his wife Tiffany have two daughters, Reagan and Mckinley.

Reagan got married in October to Dennis Cavanaugh and Mckinley is 14 and currently in the 8th grade. He has one brother named Scott who is married, has two young sons, and is the Manager of the Colorado State Fair. Brian’s parents are Gary and Davene (Davy) Stoller. His dad Gary is deceased and his mom lives in California.

Brian who is a first-generation Angus breeder, started his career with a 4H project. In 1986 his parents purchased two heifers for his brother and himself at Thomas Angus in Baker, Oregon. This project led Brian to really getting involved in the state and

national junior Angus programs.

Currently, Bear Mountain Angus sells bulls and females. They hold a sale in February to market their bulls and a sale in October to market their females. Each year they have private treaty bulls for sale as well. The bloodlines used in the herd are very maternal and have an optimal amount of growth and carcass traits. They do not breed for extremes. Some sires used are Bear Mtn Justify, Bear Mtn Stealth, Bear Mtn North Star, Bear Mtn Justice, Ellingson Prolific, Tehama Patriarch, Sitz Stellar, Sitz Domain, Woodhill, Reality and Sitz Genuine.

Advice Brian would share with new members to our association is to breed cattle that work for them in their environment and not to chase extremes and get caught up in hype. Study the cattle pedigrees and make sure they are proven to work in your environment.

He also believes that members need to get involved in association events. These events are a great way to meet new people, get your operation

name out there, and learn more from those who have been doing the business for a long time.

As Brian moved into the Past President role, the most rewarding part about being a member of the Nebraska Angus Association he said is, “Getting to meet and serve all the great fellow Angus breeders in Nebraska.” The Nebraska Angus Association explores new ideas every year to see how we can improve our Association for our membership.

During his role as President the board and himself discussed trying to start a sale for the members in the fall along with the tour. He hopes that the Association in the next year or two can put on a sale for the members to help grow the membership and give back to them.

Nebraska Producer of the Year

reBS ranch located in Gordon, Nebraska was established in 1979, by Eldon & Louisa Krebs, and is now the third generation of ownership. Ty & Kaleigh Krebs and Jake & Kami Scott along with their children, Sage, Kynsleigh, Kashlyn, Payton and Harper are all intricate parts of the operation. The ranch is located northeast of Gordon and straddles the

The ranch will be holding their 45th Annual Bull sale the third Thursday in February. Additionally, cattle are marketed privately and through periodic production sales throughout the year.

Eldon has spent a lifetime in the cattle industry. Raised on a commercial cow ranch in Neligh, Nebraska, he was active in youth agricultural programs, including FFA and 4-H, raising, showing and judging livestock and in particular beef cattle.

After attending the University of Nebraska, he furthered his knowledge and insight into beef production by embarking on a practical education by working for some of the leading ranches in the United States and working alongside the leading stockmen of that time. During this time frame, he bred, raised and showed the National Shorthorn Bull and Female for Bob-Lee Farm, and then went on to bred, raise and show

the National Champion Angus Bull, Ken Caryl Mr Angus during his tenure at Ken Caryl Ranch in Colorado. After his time in Colorado, Eldon and his family settled in Gordon Nebraska, bringing with them the foundation Angus cows they would develop the Krebs Ranch Angus herd around.

The Krebs family has been active in the Nebraska Angus Association for many years. Eldon served two terms as a director of the State Association in the late 1980’s, and he along with Ty and Jake have been delegates to the National Convention on many occasions. Ty & Kami were active members of the Nebraska Junior Association in their junior years, and now Jake & Kami are serving as advisors to the state Junior Association.

The Krebs Ranch cowherd is the culmination of continual selection pressure focusing on the functional traits required for Angus cattle to thrive, on their own, under commercial range conditions. While strong emphasis is placed on the all-important traits of growth and carcass performance, we know that quality and phenotype also heavily impacts the bottom line of our customers.

We consider quality and phenotype as important as any objectively

measured statistic and demand impeccable confirmation in our cowherd and their resulting progeny.

Only the superior producers, who efficiently maintain themselves, rebreed on time, and consistently wean pounds of beef, survive Eldon’s strict culling regiment. The result is a consistent, uniform, and dependable cowherd that works for us and, more importantly, works for our customers.

The cowherd is managed on native Sandhill pasture.

All bulls are developed and managed in the ranch’s backgrounding lots, on feed that is produced on the ranch.

A semen collection facility was added to the ranch business in 2007.

Situated on over 600 acres near the ranch operation, Western Sire Services can house 125 bulls, all with individual shelters and expansive exercise lots. Managed by Kami Scott, Western Sire Services is a Certified Semen Services facility. All semen is collected, processed and frozen on site, and has storage capacity of over 1.5 million straws. Semen is shipped daily across the United States as well as to foreign markets.

It truly can be said that Krebs Ranch is the result of a man and his vision and the value of the Angus cow.

Nebraska Angus Royalty Competition

eBraSKa anguS royalty competition On December 7th, 2024, the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary and the Nebraska Angus Association hosted the Nebraska Angus royalty contest at the Holiday Inn & Convention Center in Kearney, Nebraska.

During the event, the morning included a brunch, great social networking, and beautiful decorations. The event was headed by our Nebraska Angus Auxiliary queen chairwoman Kourtney Tarnick with the help of Nebraska Angus Secretary/Manager Margo Lehn.

This year there were four contestants. Of those contestants running for princess were Aislynn Jensen of Hampton, and Zoey Malander of Belgrade, and for queen Loganne Barta of Yutan, and Olivia Ord of Red Cloud. During the contest the contestants took part in an interview, and performed a presentation on why they wanted to be the next Nebraska Angus queen or princess. This year’s judges were Savannah Hauxwell of McCook and Lana Hubbard of Elm Creek.

Crowning took place during the Nebraska Junior Angus Association supper and fun night. Loganne Barta was crowned queen and Zoey Malander as princess. As queen Loganne was awarded a belt buckle, rose bouquet, travel bag, crown, sash, crown pin, and a $1,000 travel award. For the princess, Zoey was awarded a belt buckle, rose bouquet, travel bag, crown, sash, and crown pin.

1,500 Gather in Texas for Angus Convention Angus enthusiasts attend the 2024 Angus Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, for organization business, awards, tours, educational sessions and networking.

T

he American Angus Association welcomed nearly 1,500 registrants to Fort Worth, Texas, Nov. 1-4, for its annual Angus Convention. The event showcased innovation in production practices, technology and Association programs, and it celebrated tradition and the people who have helped make the Angus breed what it is today.

“It encourages me to see people investing time to be at Angus Convention and stay connected,” said Mark McCully, CEO of the Association. “With everything we have going in this business, I’m still most optimistic about what is yet to come.”

LEARNING TOGETHER Educational tours and presentations continue to be a highlight for many attendees. The 2024 National Angus Tour and Beef Blitz tour included stops at the Cox Ranch in Peaster, Texas; Vytelle’s corporate laboratory in Fort Worth; and Certified Angus Beef’s (CAB’s) Texas-based, licensed partner Buc-ee’s among others.

“Farmers and ranchers take care of the cattle and land; that’s their world,” said Mike McReynolds, CAB’s executive account manager for the south-central region who helped organize the 2024 Beef Blitz. “From gate to plate, there are several segments in the supply chain. We host the Beef Blitz to help connect the dots, sharing more about how it all works after cattle leave the ranch.”

On the main stage, Scott Stratten of UnMarketing Inc. spoke about the value of storytelling and the value of making things right when they go wrong, related to seedstock providers’ customer experience. His keynote was

sponsored by IMI Global, a division of Where Food Comes From.

The genetics symposium during Angus Convention featured presentations and discussion on the intersection of genetics and cattle health. Sponsored by Neogen, the symposium speakers discussed the use of new technologies, like gene editing in the pork industry and data collection methods for cattle, to improve animal health and productivity.

Angus University sessions offered attendees even more education. One learning track on Sunday featured succession planning expert and Oklahoma State University professor Shannon Ferrell, who brought energy and humor to a challenging subject for many ranching families. Producers were introduced to the basics: ways to start a conversation with their family and a variety of tools that can help them make the most of the transition.

In another track, speakers shared about the economics of herd rebuilding and selection and marketing tools for commercial cattlemen like GeneMax® Advantage™ and AngusLinkSM. “Begin with the end in mind,” said Nevil Speer, an industry consultant. “Ultimately consumers are our business.”

Producers considering new ways to drive revenue for their operation sat in on sessions exploring direct-toconsumer sales through the Certified Angus Beef Ranch to Table program as well as opportunities to leverage carbon credits and cost-sharing sustainability programs.

Offered for a second year in a row,

the Angus Media Marketing Summit offered breeders information to better understand how to refresh or evolve their brand. This included presentations about the use of videos, Angus Media’s Pasture to PublishSM portal and ideas for how to make the most of sale day with marketing.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS During the 141st Annual Convention of Delegates on Monday, Nov. 4, the Association recognized Barry Pollard for his service as the outgoing president of the Board of Directors. The 263 delegates in attendance re-elected Paul Bennett; Red House, Va.; and John Dickinso, Auburn, Calif., to the Board for a second term. Elected for a first term were Ron Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan.; Mark Johnson, Orlando, Okla.; and Danny Poss, Scotia, Neb. Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tenn., was elected as president for the Board’s 2024-2025 year, and Jim Brinkley, Milan, Mo., was elected as vice president. Darrell Stevenson, White Sulphur Springs, Mont., will serve as treasurer.

The Association also took time during the convention to collectively reflect on the progress the breed has made.

“We talk a lot about quality, but something lately that I’ve been thinking more about is the impact of the Angus breed on consistency,” said McCully during the opening general session. “We’ve improved the consistency of the product and that has a tremendous amount of value. It brings value to how we market the cattle, how we manage the cattle and sure has a lot of value to the folks that are selling our product and the consumers at the end of that supply chain.”

CELEBRATING IN STYLE The largest celebration at Angus Convention was once more the Association’s awards dinner and reception on Nov. 3. During the event, the Angus Heritage Foundation inducted Bill and Sally Bowman, Saint Nebraska Angus Association News • Winter Issue • 2025 • 29

Joseph, Mo.; Dave and Yvonne Hinma, Malta, Mont.; Harlan Ritchie (posthumously), East Lansing, Mich.; and Bob and Jim Sitz of Harrison and Dillon, Mont. Sitz Angus was also recognized for passing the 100-year mark for continuously raising Angus cattle.

The reception concluded with the crowning of the 2025 Miss American Angus. Rosalind Kidwell, Gentryville, Ind., will serve as a spokesperson for the Angus breed at shows and events across the country in the coming year.

Another source of excitement came from drawing the grand prize giveaways. Steve Knoll, Hereford, Texas, won a complete cattle-handling system from Priefert and Datamars.

Debbie Denowh, Sidney, Mont., was drawn to win a John Deere XUV835M Gator; and Lori Thomas, Baker City, Ore., took home a Trans Ova genetics service voucher, which helps cover one genetic preservation, an IVF cycle, and up to five fresh implants into Trans Ova or client recipients.

Throughout the long weekend, the director of culinary arts for the Certified Angus Beef brand, chef Tony Biggs, along with convention staff, kept attendees satisfied with beef dishes and hors d’oevres. The brand also hosted a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Bash on Nov. 2, as part of its “Raised with Respect” campaign. It was preceded earlier in the day by a BQA training, which was attended by 115 ranchers.

Radale Tiner, Association regional manager for Texas and New Mexico, reflected on Angus Convention as a whole. He said, “It was great. It was well attended. I thought everyone had fun, starting with the National Angus Tour — people talking about how good the stops were — all the way through to the awards dinner. I’m glad we could host the Angus family back in Texas this year.”

Influential sires have made their mark, and during the 2024 American Angus Association Awards Dinner and Reception on Nov. 3, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas, the Association recognized the sire registering the most progeny.

Connealy Craftsman owned by Select Sires Inc., Plain City, Ohio, and Sexing Technologies, Navasota, Texas, sired 4,014 calves registered into the Angus herd book, the most in fiscal year 2024.

“We were interested in this bull for a variety of reasons, but it was phenotype that set him apart for us.

His $M index and foot scores were excellent, and his pedigree was something different for us,” says Brian House of Select Sires Inc. “When our team set their eyes on him, they very quickly selected him as the 'special bull,' in that sale.”

Recognizing these sires highlights the breeders dedicated to providing top-quality Angus bulls.

n a year marked by shifting marketing dynamics and margin pressure across the supply chain, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) closed its 2024 fiscal year with its secondstrongest sales year in the company’s history. With growth both domestically and internationally, the global beef brand sold 1.237 billion pounds (lb.) across the United States and 55 other countries.

STAY THE COURSE ON QUALITY While the total fed-cattle supply declined by 1.6%, this year a record 5.96 million carcasses, up 2.4%, were certified for the brand, with 37.4% of all Angus cattle meeting the brand’s strict quality standards. A record 730,000 carcasses qualified for Certified Angus Beef® Prime.

consumer demand, the signal to continue producing premium beef is clear.”

Genetic selection and the right management earned producers nearly $100 per head, above market price, in grid premiums for cattle meeting the brand’s standards.

CONTINUED GROWTH AND DEMAND The market signals from domestic and international consumers showed high-quality beef is in demand both at restaurants and in the meatcase.

Diners continued to find CAB offerings from Michelin-star restaurants to barbecue joints and beyond, spurring continued foodservice growth with 415 million lb. sold across independent specialty, broadline and corporate specialty distributors. Domestically, foodservice experienced the second-best year ever, marking 14 years of growth out of the past 15.

At the meatcase, shoppers reached for the brand. Retail stores recorded 521.5 million lb. sold, a slight 1.7% decline from the previous year. This marked the sixth year of more than 500 million lb. sold across retailers.

CAB Prime sales noted a new milestone with 50.5 million lb. sold, growing 22.5% from 2023. Given the current market conditions, these record sales are further indication that consumers are not backing down from quality.

International product sales grew by 4.6% in 2024 to 194.8 million lb. At a time when overall U.S. beef exports were down, this huge growth was in large part due to increased sales in Mexico, which grew by 30%, making it the brand’s second-largest international market.

CAB value-added products saw their fourth year of continued growth, reaching 45.5 million lb. The widely popular Certified Angus Beef® smoked and fully cooked brisket saw 27% growth, and beef bacon remained popular both in the United States and internationally.

The brand continued to embrace consumer choice with three additional line extensions: Certified Angus Beef® Natural, Certified Angus Beef® Grass-Fed and Certified Angus Beef® Ranch to Table™.

he American Angus Association 141st Annual Convention of Delegates gathered Nov. 4, in Fort Worth, Texas. Five members were elected to the Board of Directors. They are Paul Bennett (second term), Red House, Va.; John Dickinson (second term), Auburn, Calif.; Ron Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan.; Mark Johnson, Orlando, Okla.; and Danny Poss, Scotia, Neb. The delegation also elected new officers; Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tenn., president and chairman of the Board; and Jim Brinkley, Milan, Mo., vice president and vice chairman of the Board.

Darrell Stevenson, White Sulphur Springs, Mont., will serve as the treasurer for the 2024-25 term.

“We have got to continue to make the American Angus Association relevant to its breeders and its members,” Perry says. “We have got to embrace diversity. We have got to continue to create tools that touch every member. The diversity of our breeders and our breed is our greatest strength.”

Directors can serve up to two, three-year terms on the board and, if elected, they serve an additional oneyear term in office as president/ chairman and/or vice president/vice chairman.

Danny Poss, a first-generation Angus breeder and lifelong resident of Scotia, grew up on a diversified, family farming operation. The early foundation of the family’s commercial cattle operation was established by his parents, Melvin and Elizabeth. In 1985, as a sophomore in high school, Poss purchased his first registered Angus heifer. Poss attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), where he majored in animal science. After graduating from college, Poss returned home to the family operation and began growing his Angus cow herd, while working with his parents on their farming operation.

That same year, 1993, he sold his first three bulls privately. In 2005, Poss purchased his own ground and continued to help his dad farm. Sadly, 58 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Winter Issue • 2025

in February 2012, Poss lost his dad to brain cancer. In 2017, he and Kristi moved the bull sale to their ranch near Scotia. Today, with the help of their boys, they market more than 300 bulls a year. To Danny and Kristi’s 30 years of marriage, they have four children: Nolan, Nathan, Neleigh and Natalie.
