Guarantee: All bulls selling for $2,500 and above are guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season, defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bull. An injured bull will be replaced by its breeder with another bull if available, or a credit in the amount paid, less salvage value of the injured bull, will be given toward another of the breeder’s bulls in next year’s sale.

This breeding guarantee does not cover the death of a bull.

Schlegel Angus Ranch

Schlegel Angus Ranch Derrick Schlegel Schlegel Angus Ranch started in 2008 with females purchased from Ficken Angus and Lyons Ranch.

Since then, I have added females from Dalebanks Angus, Mill Brae Ranch, Larson Angus Ranch, and Stevenson Diamond Dot. The main goal of my program is to produce cattle that are feed efficient, grow well, have excellent carcass quality, and can make a great cow. I maintain a strict 30-day heifer and 45-day cow breeding season. The cattle are AI’d one time and then the bulls are turned in.

Any animal that is open is culled. I retain the top end of each bull crop to use as clean up on commercial cows owned by my family. We retain ownership in those cattle through the feedlot. Carcass and feedlot data on those cattle is available. Several of those top bulls are in this sale. My hope is that the bulls in this offering will be able to add value to your calf crop and cowherd, making you more profitable.

Our cow herd is primarily made up of retained heifers and a small embryo program from purchased donors. We focus on high maternal traits, strong growth, and moderate milk as well as keeping carcass traits in mind as we make breeding decisions.

The following excert from the Fall 2020 Sydenstricker Angus Fall Catalog was put together by them following an unusually tough year at calving time.

Cowboy Logic

Many of us have a predisposed notion that we want calving ease/low BW herd sires. But, in the Angus breed, do we really have that much problem with big calves? It seems like most of the problems at birth are more linked to abnormal presentations than actual calves that are too big for the cow or even heifer. And, it seemed like maybe those smaller calves just were not as thrifty. We decided to see if we could dig into the data, and see what survivability to weaning really looked like. After all, a small calf at birth doesn’t really help the bottom line if he dies prior to weaning anyway!

We divided up four years of spring calf crops into three groups: (light) 69 lbs. or less; (medium) 70-89 lbs.; and (heavy) 90 lbs. and up. We edited out any abortions and all twins. In a nutshell, the death loss at birth through weaning was twice as high on the light calves as it was on the medium calves. The death loss on the heavy calves was the least of the three groups, and it was the least in every one of the four years. We did not differentiate according to cause of death, or whether it was right at birth or later on pre-weaning.

Ficken Angus Farms John Ficken Family Ficken Angus Farms was started in 1940 by my parents. That herd was dispersed in 1968 due to drought.

My wife and I started a new herd in 1972 with three cows from the Green Garden herd at Ellsworth, KS. Two more cows were added the next year from Willard Ericson at Marquette, KS. From that meager start we applied our philosophy to breeding Angus cattle. Our three children showed cattle and were involved with the operation until they were out of high school, except our youngest son, Lance, who maintained a small group of cows.

He and his wife have now become major partners in the operation. Our ideas of how cattle should perform have not changed from the beginning. Cattle exist to produce meat; that is the goal. We expect our cattle to be better than average in the major EPDs and dollar traits. We have never bred for extremes in any one trait, and our herd has always been selected for calving ease, structural soundness, good udders, and carcass quality.

Our mission to produce cattle that the commercial cattleman can make a profit at any level they choose to sell, and the buyers will want those cattle again. That goal is an ever moving target; we are getting closer to the bulls-eye every calf crop.

The Pathfinder Angus program was started in 1978 in an effort to identify superior cows in the breed based on their records of performance from Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR).

To become a Pathfinder (indicated by a # in front of her name in the pedigree -- shown in this catalog as a # behind her name in the pedigree), a cow must calve her first time near the herd’s average for first calving and yearly after that.

She must wean at least three calves with an average weaning ratio of 105 or above.

Owner Scott Sweasy has been buying cows from Ficken Angus and breeding them to Simmental bulls to produce half-blood cattle. His operation is located east of LaCrosse, KS. These two operations are both cared for by Lance Ficken. Their goal is to give commercial cowmen an option in their herd to add some hybrid vigor. We’ve all heard someone say the growth rate of a dead calf is distressingly poor, and took that to mean we needed lighter calves at birth so we would get more of them born alive. Every operation is different, but it certainly appears to us that bigger calves at birth are more likely to still be around at weaning. We would never advocate breeding heifers to anything but a true heifer bull, but our cowherds might be much better served by sires that give their calves more of a head start.

A study by the University of Illinois on Sim-Angus cattle reported the same conclusions.

CED vs. BW Which number should one consider strongest when purchasing a bull to use on virgin heifers?

This question comes up often in discussions. If you talk to a geneticist, CED is always the answer, because calving ease is what you are looking for, and that is the actual trait reflected by a CED EPD. Birth Weight (BW) is an indicator trait, but not the actual trait of economic importance.

However, one thing we think about pretty often is the fact that a lot more data affects the BW EPD than the CED EPD. First of all, CED EPD is based only on pulls and unassisted births out of first calf heifers. No data from second-calvers and older is counted at all. Secondly, if all the calves are born unassisted, it does not affect the CED of any of the sires, other than the influence of the birthweights on the BW EPD, which would have some correlated effect on CED EPD. That would mean most of the data from small herds would count very little, since the odds of pulling a calf on a small number of heifers is very small. Also, no pulls on ET calves are counted. In the big scheme of things, the number of pulls turned in is a pretty small number, and it seems to us that it could skew the CED EPD pretty strongly in either direction in a good luck/bad luck scenario.

Birth weights, on the other hand, are generally turned in, and processed, on a very high percentage of calves turned in on AHIR. Sire summary supplemental information shows over 5 times as many birthweights reported as there are calving ease scores.
