ASA News Obituary

Donald David Rose, 84, of the Boones Creek Community and a lifelong resident of Johnson City, TN passed away peacefully on Thursday (December 20, 2018).

Don was the son of the late Delmer David Rose and Mary Edith Rose. He was a 1950 graduate of Boones Creek High School where he was active in various clubs and organizations including serving as President of the 4-H Club and Young Farmers and Homemakers. Don also played on the basketball team.

Donald Rose is survived by his two sons, David Alan Rose, Duane Delton Rose and wife, Amy; a grandson, Devin Rose along with a great grandson, Jackson Rose.

ASA Foundation Scholarships Each year the American Salers Foundation provided scholarships to members of the American Salers Junior Association to further their education. This year, two $1,000 scholarships were awarded.

The Rose Family joined the American Salers Association in 1991. They actively promoted and exhibited Salers cattle throughout the region in many sales and shows. Don was an active member in the Tennessee and Eastern States Salers Association and always encouraged is sons and grandsons to promote the Salers breed.

In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his son, Dale Carter Rose; a grandson, Justin Blake Rose; his sister, Mary Frances Rose.

Taylor Goering, McPherson, Kansas was one recipient. Taylor is currently attending Hutchinson Community College and next fall plans to attend Wichita State University in Kansas to pursue a degree in business.

Abagale Lingle, Aspinwall, Iowa was the second recipient. Abagale is currently a senior at IKM-Manning High School in Manning, Iowa. Abby plans to attend Des Moines Community College in Des Moines, Iowa to major in Photography. g

Denver....

What a start to 2019 for Salers breeders and enthusiasts alike at the National Western Stock Show where the temperatures may have been cold, but the quality of the cattle kept things heated up! The festivities kicked off on Monday the 21st of January with the National Salers and Optimizer Bull and Heifer Pen Shows. Judges Taylor Frank from El Dorado, KS, Jeff Jones from Morgan, UT, and Gregg Stewart from Washington, KS had their work cut out for them right from the onset with an outstanding heifer show. Many comments were made throughout the day that this year’s show was the deepest set of heifers exhibited in the yards. Judge Taylor Frank said, “Often times when I judge shows I see fluctuation throughout the day where the show may start strong and then get weak or vice versa. That was not the case though, those very first heifer pens were really strong and the quality stayed high all the way to the end of the bulls.” That quality certainly did not go unnoticed a day later at the National Sale either, where the bids came often and went high. Frank said, “There wasn’t a single poor pen and although the cattle may have been a little different from one another, they were all very good, extremely useful cattle certainly worth buying.”

After getting the call to judge the pen shows Frank said, “I came in having high expectations of the cattle and was not disappointed with what the breeders brought through the ring. I was especially pleased with the cattle who were low

on birth weight and yet combined that with tremendous carcass traits, specifically ribeye area. I thought that was very unique and should be highlighted.” When asked of his general takeaways about the cattle after the show Frank said, “I think these cattle offer a lot of value to our industry. I thought they were cattle with lots of rib and body that looked like they would work in a pasture setting with strong EPD profiles and extra impressive scan data. I think the industry needs different kinds of cattle and I certainly see plenty of relevance in these genetics.”

A strong National Sale maintained the excitement for breeders in Denver on Tuesday the 22nd, of January with many high selling lots.

Wednesday morning was full of anticipation with the National Salers and Optimizer Show. First through the ring was a tremendous set of cattle exhibited by the Salers juniors who did a great job all week promoting the importance of youth involvement in our cattle. The breed should certainly be proud of not only the champions in the junior show, but the depth of quality all the way through. As the open show kicked off, Lydell Meier from Clinton, TN had many positive things to say about the cattle and was excited with the opportunity to sort through the National Show. As Meier talked the Junior Heifer Calf division he said, “This division really turns up the heat! What an awesome set of young females who do so many things right. Powerful and good ribbed but still really stylish, well built, and sound structured.”

As he progressed through the show and discussed his lineup of heifers in the grand drive Meier said, “These cattle are flat good! I know we maybe don’t have the numbers as some breeds, but this top end especially could run with the best heifers of any breed at any show in the country!” Meier also discussed the improvements he has seen in the breed when he said, “It is evident to me that we have continued to tweak the genetics of these cattle making them better and better every year with plenty of balance and style while being genuine from the ground up. I hope you guys are as excited about these heifers as I am because they are flat good!” After a competitive bull show, Meier wrapped up and said, “My complements to the Salers exhibitors, we have seen a great set of Optimizer and Salers cattle come through the ring today, it has been outstanding!”

If Denver was any indication for what the remainder of 2019 has in store for the Salers breed, it is going to be a thriller! g

2019 Performance Breeders of the Year Profitability is the backbone of the cattle industry. Producer profitability can be measured via a plethora of different performance traits. The American Salers Association annually recognizes those Salers producers that take the time and make an effort to accurately report a variety of performance traits. Points are awarded to each producer in a variety of categories all based on the numbers of records reported compared to the number of active females in the herd. Traits include; standard weight traits for both progeny and dams, in addition to body condition score, udder and height data. The 2019 winners are calculated from the 2018 calf crop.
