Welcome to the Sale Dear Friends and fellow Cattlemen & Cattlewomen, We would like to invite you to our 22nd Annual Superior Beef Genetics Spring Production Sale. If we have learned anything over the past year, it is that feed efficiency and energy utilization has become very crucial in depicting the direction that the cattle industry is headed in. With the input shortages and price hikes, many of our customers found it to be a good time to cull those animals that weren’t utilizing their energy efficiently. As wild as the inputs have gotten, it has been comforting to see cattle prices consistently progress to try to better keep up with the input costs. In reference to the futures market, feeder calves and live cattle appear to stay strong and don’t plan to soften anytime soon. As the demand for high quality beef continues to increase, it is important that our cattle pack on the pounds by utilizing their energy in the most efficient way possible.

As the kill cow and bull market remained strong this past year, we here at SBG decided it was time to cull some of our own mature herd bulls and invest in new, strong, outcross genetics in order to better serve you, our customers. We have spent the last six months researching, scouring the region, and conversing with other seedstock producers, in search of the most prevalent bloodlines that will flourish in our environment. In order for our customers to their reap desired profitability, we are continually adding new genetics that will provide our customers with the low maintenance, longevity and sustainability to their herd. In addition to those strong maternal traits, we need cows that produce calves that will gain efficiently and walk on a sound set of feet and legs. We see the importance of these traits first hand every day. Ignoring the importance of structural soundness can have a negative impact within your herd, resulting in cows that won’t reproduce and calves that will not perform in the feedlot.

Here at SBG, in addition to producing purebred and hybrid genetics, we also run our own commercial herd, just as our customers do. We know first hand all the components that it takes to succeed within the commercial environment while attempting to get the most return on your investment. With this knowledge, we are better able to serve you, the commercial cattleman. A phenotypically attractive bull who offers width, depth, and moderation. K808 is a maternal brother to the 2021 SBG high seller bull at $9,000. We are loving the TJ Flat Iron cattle.

A few tips on caring for your yearling bull.

1. If your group has too many cows or heifers for one yearling bull (we suggest 10-15), don’t turn all the bulls out at the start of the season. If you turn them all out at the same time, they are more likely to all lose condition and perhaps all go temporarily sterile at the same time. If you have two bulls, put one in for two weeks, then pull him out and turn in the other. The forced rest and a little feed and fly control will make him stronger. Using the every two week rotation, if one bull is a stronger breeder, he will always be covering what the other bull missed.

2. A yearling bull should not be on a Missouri pasture from mid-July through August. Bulls generally shed their first two incisors at about 18-20 months of age. That combined with fescue endophytes and heat stress could cause a bull to get so nutritionally stressed that it will take him a long time to get back in shape.

Two of the last descendents of the late Nichols MCM P20, K009 and K012 could easily be defined as “saving the best for last.” We knew we loved the Baldridge Command bloodline, but we are loving it even more mated up with The Queen. For full sibs, they are different in many ways. K009 is the framier bull of the two who we believe with be a whole frame score bigger at maturity than that of K012. K009 is gaining 6.3 pounds per day on our performance test whereas, K012 gained 4.0 pounds per day. As you’ll see in the videos K009 is longer and stretchier, whereas K012 is more deep and wide.

Genomic DNA Scores, this is a percentile ranking of how an animal compares against the entire DNA database of Angus cattle. All scores would be considered more favorable the lower they are. Example: Bull A has a YW DNA Score of 5. This means he ranks in the best 5% of the Angus breed for DNA.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), the difference in pounds of hot carcass weight.

Marbling EPD (Marb), the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny.

All EPD explanations used for Angus will comply for the Simmental except for the following: Stayability (Stay), the ability of a sires daughters to remain in the herd past six years.

Shear Force (SF), pounds of force required to shear a steak. The lower the number, the better.

All Purpose Index (API), This is a comparison (or index) of all the traits important to profitability when using a bull to make replacement females, feeder calves, or retained ownership.

Terminal Index (TI), This is a combination (or index) of all the traits important to profitability when using a bull for a terminal scenario only.

Actual weights and DNA scares are already implemented into the EPDs and we suggest that for simplification you may use the EPD’s as your most complete assessment of the cattle. However we would like to provide all the extra tools for any of those who would like to use them.

DO NOT COMPARE EPDS ACROSS ANGUS AND SIMMENTAL/SIMANGUS. THEY ARE NOT COMPARABLE.

About Ratios. Sometimes we take for granted that everyone knows the lingo used in describing and documenting purebred livestock. You see a ratio (usually a number somewhere on either side of 100 that comes after a weight or a scan). A ratio is how the animal ranked within his group. 100 is the average and anything above or below is a percentage point above or below the average. So, if a bull has a YW of 1340 to ratio 102, he is a 2 percent higher than the average. When describing cows offspring performance the same applies. If a cow has 3 WW@103 it means she has had three calves with weaning weights averaging three percent higher than average.
