Welcome, once again, to the 5th Western Exposure Bred Female Sale. It feels like yesterday I was getting ready for the first sale in a foreign land called Iowa. I was a nervous wreck hoping at least five people would show up. Luckily, Nick and I were well supported and we are still thankful.

I feel like I have put together a set this year that will not disappoint. I focused on females with bone, power, great fronts, and maternal genetics without steer pedigrees we all too often see. Many of the female sales have become ports to dump the females that don’t sell the previous fall alongside their brothers. Nick and I have made it a passion to offer only maternal genetics, and with the exception of 3 or 4 lots, this group is strictly maternal. Many of the females are maternally bred on the top and bottom side of their pedigree to be mama cows.

I feel if you are wanting to raise steers, females or show heifers this group can get the job done and fill anyone’s need.

Please realize these have not been babied nor had any special treatment. They are presented in their working clothes with minimal fluff and puff. The cows weaned calves this fall or were spun from fall calvers to springs. These are real cattle for the real cowman. I thank you once again for the interest and look forward to seeing everyone in Dunlap January 6th.

Welcome to the 5th annual Western Exposure. Without a doubt, this set to see in person, from top to bottom, is exciting. These should go out and go rite to work for the new owners. The pedigrees have a ton of maternal bred into them and stem from some great donors and true momma cows we run. Whether you want to breed these for females or raise show steers, there are many options to do so. When on-line and private treaty calf sales started in September, up to this point, the good ones have sold very well. The feeder cattle market and replacement females are commanding top dollar in November through December as I write this. You have to own the factory! Good Bull + Good Cow = Good Calf. Don’t rely on just the bull! There are many great females in this sale. The response from the past four years has been very positive. Each year several people tell me, “Hey, that bred heifer calved unassisted.” or “Hey, she had a nice heifer calf”. Make plans to be in Dunlap January 6th to own one of these great bred heifers, cow, open heifers or bulls I have brought to town.

Lot 1 is probably the best club calf making female I have ever brought to town. She is a complete freak in terms of thickness, muscle expression, yet still having an extremely feminine presence to her. I could paint Goodyear on her side and you would think she belongs above a football stadium giving us aerial shots of the game. Her middle is literally blimp-worthy. And don’t forget her functional rear treds! We all know Whiskeys can sometimes get a little tight in that hock and pastern, but not this one. She has the great soft pastern that is essential to keep these sound show steers moving after 600 pounds. I think she can do big things someday and would love to keep a piece of her if anyone is looking for a partner. I can make the eggs, I just need someone to sell the calves! Selling half interest with the option to double to bid and own her all.

He is as honest as they come and told me she would be a great bred. He didn’t lie, however, he’s not completely honest. He has his own par 3 hole at his house and he does lie about the yardage so he can always win closest to the pin! I’m still bitter about getting beat! Going on three years and still haven’t hit the green! This lady should do great things in the club calf world. I can see her becoming a donor for just about any herd and she’s backed by a great donor that gets it done year after year.

A really long sided, deep made Whiskey that will bring a whole lot of good to her half of the equation when crossed with a fuzzy midget.

She is very functional and has the look of one that will love her baby.

Some people want to focus of making them choked necked, and yes, I love to look at a zipper front as much as the next guy; however, as the neck gets sexier, the maternal traits get weaker. If you don’t agree with that, go study a herd of giraffes and get back to me with what you learned. Ever seen a bag on a giraffe? Me neither. The show ring is taking all the good out of the cow and we will soon be so backwards in our breeding we will be starting over. Don’t chase the trend!

Brazos?! Yeah, I thought the same thing. I speak Spanish and “brazos” means “arms.” That even left me more confused about her sire’s name, but whoever made the decision to breed one of the best females I have ever sold to a bull no one has ever heard of, made a good decision that day. I own this one’s mother with Scott Jorgensen of Adair, IA. I got her as a calf from Scott and she was just like her mother, a little late maturing, decent as a calf, but amazing as a bred. Her mother was a stand-out in the 2015 sale bringing $19k. Her first calf sold for $7k in last year’s sale as a bred heifer to the Kingpin of Kearney, NE, Ward Eckloff. Ward told me, this fall, she has already entered his donor pen! It’s more difficult to become a donor for Eckloff than to get into Harvard! This heifer will follow in her sister’s footsteps as well. She papers as a Purebred Simmental to boot! The options are endless with this one. If I didn’t own her mother, she would still be in Idaho.

Last year, we had Wynonna and Naomi Judd as the sisters and this year I think we are going for more of a Venus and Serena feel. Here’s two Profit daughters out of one of my best PB Angus donor cows on the place. She raised a high-selling open heifer last year and another that was traded in the Foxy Ladies Sale of James Felt. Donor 471 is probably one of my most fertile donors as well, averaging over 15 eggs every time she has been flushed. I really like both of these sisters in terms of their capacity and volume. They are very sound at the ground and ooze functionality. I have more confidence in these two than a winning season for the Huskers in 2018. Detmer was supposed to fix the offensive issues for BYU and now he’s looking for a job. Hopefully, Frost can resurrect the Huskers and bring back the golden years.

Lot 16’s donor mother has done an exceptional job with raising a state fair champion, as well as two division winners at The NAILE and American Royal. She came from my buddy, Kim Klotz, and he told me she would be great one. He must know his stuff because she has exceeded expectations by ten-fold. This heifer is as soft made as a purebred as I have seen. She has a shot of color which will increase your chances for a blaze. When you combine all of that with the backing of her mother, greatness is in her future.

Lot 33 has the exact same hair as my wife, I kid you not! Throw a bucket of water on her and watch out! It’s like those little dinosaurs I used to win at the arcade after spending $47 to get 16 tickets. Once exposed to water, they would grow and turn into big spongy dinosaurs. My wife’s hair does the same thing! Now, look at the kids in the front of the catalog. Not a single one of them has curly hair. That’s what I think will happen with this heifer. Breed her to a straight haired bull, not even a good looking bull, like myself, and you’ll end up with some darn good looking offspring. I consider myself the Sooner of bulls: not much to look at. In fact, I don’t think a picture of Sooner has ever been posted on the internet, but boy, could he make a good looking set of calves.

This freak of a heifer comes from my good buddy, Tracy Irish. Many of the hunting pictures come from him. He runs many cows with us but his are almost always walking towards heaven or hell. They never touch a flat surface unless they are on a truck. They graze a lot of dry mountain range and forest country. This heifer is out of a bull I sold him that was raised by a great Meyer I got from Dave Duello nearly 10 years ago. She has probably been chased by a wolf, seen hippies doing hippie things in the forest and had multiple dogs on her heels numerous times, but one thingÍs for sure is when you see her, you find a spot for her in your herd. SheÍs flat awesome and will do a ton of good.

This heifer originated at the marque of Dunlap, Joe Sullivan’s. She is really nice and a blonde out of a great cow. She will be ten times better after she gets home for a month. I don’t know who started the trend or why everybody has followed, but for some reason in the club calf industry it is not cool to answer your phone, clear your voicemails nor even setup your voicemail.

I have never understood this concept and if you are one of them change your ways. I can call any business in the United States and someone will answer the phone and, if not, they will call me back.

I think this is the only industry that does not believe in the personal communication of making a sale. What’s even more fascinating is I can call Dave Faber, Jon Schaben, or any 900 number, (do they still exist?) and they always pick up if they are able and I know they are way busier than I have ever been. This cow is just like a steer jock’s voicemail. She is FULL! For a PB Angus to have this much power is hard to find. Usually a powerful Angus comes with a Brahman front, but not this brute. She is long fronted, good at the ground and bred for calving ease!

Another Angus that possesses everything good about the breed.

She’s different than most. Angus has focused so hard on EPD’s that the cattle are losing bone, meat and structure. Buying cattle on EPDs is like a college admissions office selecting students based on their parents’ resumes. I think it’s one of the biggest scams in the whole industry. People buy into them and they literally tell you nothing until numerous progeny have been registered in an honest, ethical way. I can see them working in the Dairy world, where everyone is on an even playing field, but in the beef cattle world, environment rules the roost. In my part of the world the way to get a bigger calf isn’t by using big weaning weight EPD bulls, but to pray for a rain mid-July. That makes more of a difference then any bull. This female has passed the test at home and will do a great job in the Midwest. She was spun from the fall herd and I really wish she had stayed home.
